The installation of floodlights and an expansion of the Bahrain Turf Series, elevating its overall value to over $1 million

Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, where the mares and fillies will take centre stage in the Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes. Tickets for tomorrow will be available on the gate for all those interested.

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE JULY FESTIVAL

The July Festival is the pinnacle of the summer season at Newmarket Racecourses, offering three days of high-class racing and much more – all on the historic and picturesque July Course.

Action gets underway on Thursday (July 11th) with Ladies Day. The racing highlights on Ladies Day include the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes (Sponsored By The Kingdom Of Bahrain). The mile and a half contest provides one of the first Pattern race opportunities for three-year-olds to take on their elders and can often prove a good guide for success later in the season There is also top-class juvenile action with the Group Two Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes while the opening Group Three Bahrain Trophy is one of the first trials for the final Classic of the season, the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster. One of Newmarket’s best-loved figures, the late Sir Henry Cecil, is remembered with the Listed Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil Stakes. Off the track, the Sustainable Style Awards showcase elegance and fashion with a sustainable twist.

Following on from Ladies Day is Festival Friday (July 12th) which features the first Group One race of the week, the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares. The mile contest is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and sees the Classic generation take on their elders. There is also further Group Two two-year-old action with the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Sponsored by bet365) while at the end of the day racegoers will be able to start their weekend with a DJ set of iconic Ibiza Classics by Heart FM’s Toby Anstis

The July Festival reaches its pinnacle on Saturday (July 13th) with July Cup Day. Also part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, the £600,000 My Pension Expert July Cup is one of Britain’s premier sprint contests and often plays a pivotal role in determining Europe’s champion sprinter at the end of the season July Cup Day also features the Group Two bet365 Superlative Stakes for two-year-olds, won in spectacular fashion last year by subsequent Betfred Derby hero City Of Troy, and the week’s big handicap – the bet365 Bunbury Cup. Radio and Television presenter Melvin Odoom will take to the stage after racing for a 60-minute DJ set to close three spectacular days in the best way possible.

There

is

plenty of entertainment for guests to enjoy today!

Look out for our roaming musicians out on course today; joining us we have The Bluebirds, a trio of fabulous singers, and the Fat Cats Brass Band, an exciting modern UK brass band like you’ve never seen before

Don’t forget to strike a pose for the Newmarket Paparazzi who will be taking photos of our guests around the racecourse! Keep an eye on our Facebook page following The July Festival for your photos.

Approximately 15 minutes following the last race, DJGeorgeCummins will be taking to the stage, alongside Amber Sax for the perfect after party! You can expect all the feel-good tunes and dance anthems after a day of superb racing – the perfect way to end day one of this year’s July Festival!

ANCIENT WISDOM appeared to be crying out for a step up in trip when no match to the impressive Economics in the Dante. The Dubawi colt received just that when sent to the Derby at Epsom last month, but, having perhaps failed to handle the track, that effort can be forgiven. The clear pick on official ratings, he can resume his progress upped further in distance and eased in class. Space Legend (second) and Royal Supremacy (third) clashed in the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot last time and are the most likely dangers.

Selection: ANCIENT WISDOM

RACE TWO

Danger; Space Legend

Better was expected of WHISTLEJACKET in the Norfolk three weeks ago, but he was by no means disgraced in fourth

The son of No Nay Never hit the line strongly that day and ought to prove more effective at this longer trip, so it would come as no surprise were he to provide Aidan O'Brien a first winner in this contest since Royal Lytham back in 2019

Ain't Nobody maintained his unbeaten record when swooping late to land the Windsor Castle last time, though it is Coventry runner-up Electrolyte that may be the main threat

Selection: WHISTLEJACKET

RACE THREE

Danger; Electrolyte

Although she proved underwhelmingintheListedMarygate Fillies' Stakes at YorkinMay,it'stoo early towriteMagic Mild off Thedaughter of HavanaGreyis a potential improver upped in distance and she may give the selection most to think about, ahead of well-bred newcomer Adoon Valley

Selection: MISS FASCINATOR Danger; Magic Mild

RACE SIX

LEAD ARTIST was unlucky not to score on his debut in the Wood Ditton after being slowly away and flying home late to only be denied by a nose. The son of Dubawi proved to be a class act at York in May and appears to have plenty more scope for improvement, so the rise in grade is unlikely to be an inconvenience. Kitty Rose wasn't disgraced when fifth in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last time and she has to be considered, while Socialite is another to take seriously

Selection: LEAD ARTIST

RACE SEVEN

Danger; Kitty Rose

TWIRLING was well beaten in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot last month, but prior to that she took a class 4 event at Doncaster The daughter of Churchill is only 5lb higher compared to that triumph and Ryan Moore retains the ride from last time, so she shades the vote Sterling Knight finished down the field in the Buckingham Palace at the Royal meeting last time, but he is better judged on his victory at Newbury the time before and he should go well Of the rest, The Ice Phoenix makes the most appeal

Selection: TWIRLING

Danger; Sterling Knight

1. THE AVERAGE FLAT JOCKEY

is below 5’6 (although there are exceptions) and weigh between 8 & 9st

2. JOCKEYS BOOTS

They are mostly synthetic and can weigh as little as 300 grams

3. RACING SADDLE

Weighs between 1 & 2lb

4. JOCKEYS WHIP

A jockey’s whip is made from a core of light-weight carbon fibre surrounded by layers of air cushioned foam and light-weight leather. Usage of the whip is strictly controlled by the British Horseracing Authority Stewards who are present on raceday

5. SILKS

The silks that a jockey wears belong to the racehorse owner rather than the jockey. Each set is unique, such is the demand for certain designs that some colours can sell for thousands, or even tens of thousands of pounds

6. BREATHING

The horse’s lungs breath in and out 140 times per minute delivering 150 litres of air per second. At 10,000 litres per race, that is what a human breaths in a day

7. HEART CAPACITY

Up to 240 beats per minute moving 60 pints of blood during a race. A racehorse’s heart weighs the equivalent of 4 bags of sugar (around 4 kgs)

8. STRIDE LENGTH

9. STRIDE FREQUENCY

Between 130 and 140 strides per minute

10. AVERAGE SPEED

37.5 mph

11. HORSES WEIGHT

A horses weight is approximately half a tonne

12. FUEL CONSUMPTION

A horse uses 35,000 calories per day, whereas a human adult male is advised to eat 2,500

KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN JULY STAKES

The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes is the oldest two-year-old race run anywhere in Britain with a history stretching way back to 1786, when it was won by Bullfinch.

Initially open to both sexes, it was restricted to colts and geldings in 1977 Formerly a Group Three, the six-furlong contest was upgraded to Group Two status in 2003.

In its early years, the winners included horses that went on to excel over longer distances later in their career including future Derby winners Gustavus (1820), Orlando (1843), The Flying Dutchman (1848), Donovan (1888), Cicero (1904) and Nimbus (1948) In the time when it was open to fillies, the most significant winner was Sceptre (1901), the only horse to win four of the five English Classics (1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger).

Since World War II, the July Stakes has generally gone to horses who have gone on to prove themselves as specialist sprinters. A notable winner was Green Desert (1985), who went on to Group One success the following year in the July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup before a long and successful career at stud.

The best winner of recent years is Advertise (2018), who went on to win three times at Group One level.

George Fordham and Sir Gordon Richards are the most successful jockeys of all time with six wins each while Frankie Dettori has been successful five times. Frank Butters is the winningmost trainer with seven victories while among the current generation Richard Hannon leads the way with four successes.

Jasour had a switch in tactics under Jim Crowley and was held up at the back of the field before powering home strongly at 16/1.

This took his form to a whole new level and the step up in trip clearly suited him well and he was not for catching inside the final furlong.

Lake Forest was the closest competitor under the Marquand drive but was still a further 2 lengths behind, while 40/1 shot Toca Madera outran his odds to gain third.

THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S STAKES

(Sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain)

First run in 1894, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes is named in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who became the Princess of Wales on her marriage to the future King Edward VII in 1862.

Over the years the race, which is open to three year olds and upwards, has been won by some of the very best horses to have graced the historic Newmarket turf Initially staged over a mile, it was increased to its present distance of a mile and a half in 1902

Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown in 1893, was the inaugural winner in 1894 while the 1899 Triple Crown hero, Flying Fox, took in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in the same year as his 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger victories Rock Sand, the 1903 Triple Crown winner, was another high-class winner in the early years, scoring as a four-year-old in 1904

Lance Chest became the first horse to score back-to-back victories when he triumphed in 1912 and 1913, while another high-class winner was Blandford in 1922 Although he only ran four times in his life, Blandford went on to a highly-successful career as a stallion, as did the 1925 victor, Solario

Airborne, the first post-war winner of the Derby in 1946 at 50-1, won the Newmarket contest in the same season, while a young Lester Piggott enjoyed one of his first big race victories when riding Zucchero to success in 1952 The “Long Fellow”, who was just 16 at the time, also enjoyed back-to-back victories on Primera (1959 and 1960) as well as scoring on Apostle (1961), Lord Helpus (1977), Pollerton (1978), Light Cavalry (1981) and Head For Heights (1984)

Due to the quality of its winners, the contest was upgraded to a Group Two affair in 1978

Two very good fillies to have won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes are Lupe (1971), who won the 1970 Oaks, and Height Of Fashion (1982) Owned by The Queen, Height Of Fashion was subsequently sold to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and became one of the most outstanding broodmares of her generation with the likes of Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef among her offspring. Unfuwain himself won the 1988 Princess of Wales’s Stakes

In 1989, Carroll House was the winner of the Newmarket contest and went on to prove himself one of the outstanding middle-distance horses of his generation by landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe later in the season

HAMISH’s winning run came to an end in the Coronation Cup at Epsom 6 weeks ago but he lost nothing in defeat that day and can resume winning ways back down in class. Arrest stepped up on his comeback run when runner-up in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester and last year’s St Leger runner-up is feared most.

PLAY SMARTER

The recent rain will playto the strengths of KITTYROSE, who posted a personal best when runner-up in a Group 3 at Leopardstown in April and made a solid start for her new yard at Royal Ascot last month. Lead Artist looked potentially smart when scoring at York in May and is feared most, whilst Native American is another who will be suited by plenty of give underfoot.

Stewards Note:

THE ICE PHOENIX: Following its run on 8/6/2024 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Fifty Nifty (IRE), 11-2 Twirling (IRE), 6-1 Urban Sprawl (GB), 7-1 Sterling Knight (GB), 9-1 Repertoire (GB), 10-1 Alzahir (FR), 12-1 The Ice Phoenix (IRE), 14-1 Helm Rock (GB), 18-1 Safwan (GB), 22-1 Tempus (GB)

FIFTY NIFTY looked good when making a winning debut at Yarmouth in April and it was a competitive Doncaster novice in which he finished a very respectable fifth next time. Armed with potential nowventuring down the handicap route, this unexposed 3-y-o makes plenty of appeal. Twirling and Sterling Knight were both down the field in RoyalAscot handicaps but bettercan be expected here, while Alzahir and Urban Sprawl are others to consider.

LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROWS RACING

Upgraded to Group One status in 2004, the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes is one of the most prestigious races of the season for fillies and mares. It forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Established in 1911, the mile contest is named in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth, one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th Century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883

Initially for three-year-olds only, the Falmouth Stakes was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1973 Appropriately, the inaugural running in 1911 fell to Alice, owned by the seventh Viscount Falmouth, son of the sixth Viscount, although few would have got rich backing the 1-10 favourite.

During its early history, the Falmouth Stakes was dominated by trainer Alec Taylor, known as “The Wizard of Manton”, who recorded six successes with First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid Of Bath (1924)

Happy Laughter in 1953 became the first filly to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Falmouth Stakes in the same season. Waterloo, in 1972, is the only other to have taken the two Newmarket contests

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sonic Lady won the first running of the Falmouth Stakes with Group Two status in 1987, having also scored 12 months earlier. The Nureyev filly was a truly outstanding performer, having also won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix du Moulin - all Group One events

Between 1993 and 1995, the combination of owner Lord Carnarvon and trainer Richard Hannon reigned supreme. Niche coasted home by an impressive three and a half lengths in 1993, while Lemon Souffle was not hard pressed to record a length and a quarter success a year later. The duo notched their third successive win in 1995 with Caramba, but this time the winning margin was just a short-head.

The German raider Proudwings made history when she was victorious in 2001 by two lengths Trained by Cologne-based Ralf Suerland and ridden by leading Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, Proudwings was the first German-trained winner of a Pattern race in Britain since Star Appeal in the 1975 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park.

The 2004 renewal, the first with Group One status, saw the 1000 Guineas heroine Attraction take on the older generation for the first time. Mark Johnston’s charge ran well, but went down by two and a half lengths to the other star filly of the season, Soviet Song, losing her unbeaten record in the process.

Soviet Song returned in 2005 to defend her title and did so in style, comfortably defeating Alexander Goldrun by two and a half lengths under regular pilot Johnny Murtagh (who had been on board in 2004), albeit in a slower time than the previous year

Probably the greatest winner ever is Goldikova (2009), a 14-time winner at Group/Grade One level, who created history by winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile in the USA on three occasions (2008, 2009 & 2010).

MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSES:

There have been two dual winners: Sonic Lady (1986, 1987)

Stoute has been successful so far with Royal Heroine (1983), Sonic Lady (1986 & 1987), Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014) and Veracious (2019).

MOST SUCESSFUL JOCKEY:

Ryan Moore is the most successful current jockey with three wins – Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016) and Roly Poly (2017).

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
