Alongside the action on the track, there is a free bouncy castle and face painters for our younger racegoers in the Garden Enclosure, so make sure to head down and explore.

Looking back, it has been a spectacular summer here at the July Course once again. From Rob Hornby’s Group One double at the Moët & Chandon July Festival, to our Newmarket Nights, including the sold out Pete Tong’s Ibiza Classics, we have enjoyed welcoming racegoers throughout the summer.

We now look ahead to Gold Season at the Rowley Mile, where we will see some of the future stars in action, including in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the Group One bet365 Fillies’ Mile. Tickets for all these racedays are available on our website.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsor for today, Jenningsbet, for their generous support. We are delighted to welcome them back to Newmarket Racecourse this weekend, and encourage racegoers to head to the winners enclosure before the first race to listen to the Punters Panel, where you can hear their tips for the day. We would also like to take this time to thank Tattersalls for their generous and ongoing support.

Welcome to Newmarket for the last of our racedays held here at the July Course.

I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.

Newmarket Heath surveyed by I.Champan in 1787 shows the state of the racecourses close to the time of the Jockey Club’s founding.Exning and Newmarket were notably quite established. the heath forms the primary training grounds to the largest cluster of racehorses on the planet between two and three thousand in number at any one time It’s combination of training facilities and their interaction with the town, coupled with its unique heritage, are a vital contributor to Newmarket’s position as the preeminent racing and breeding centre for thoroughbreds and spiritual home of horseracing globally 1886 Map shows Hamilton Road and the area north of the heath including Southfield Farm and Seven Springs are relatively similar today. World War II brought formal airfield facilities which occupied the heath for just under 40 years. 1980s The airfield was decommissioned World Wars I and II The Rowley Mile stands and heath were occupied by the military The heath was converted into an airfield for training officers and no flying was permitted on the racedays

Newmarket and horses have been connected since Queen Boadicea founded a Royal stud at Exning. More than 1,000 years later, Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” in this location.

19th Century Lord George Bentinck, owner of a large expanse of heathland and a Jockey Club member turned acres of scrubland over to grass, purchased adjacent land and established the gallops which still exist today.

17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I, who moved the Royal court there for a time and raced horses on the Heath. His grandson, Charles II, built the first recorded stand.

NEWMARKET HEATH: A HISTORY

17th Century

18th Century

Over the late 18th and 19th Century, races were changing shorter distances and more fixed finishing posts meant the nature of spectating was equally shifting. The 1850s brought significant reorganisation on the heath associated with the growing focus on the Rowley Mile including its first stand. This was replaced by the Astley Stand in 1875 when a stand exclusively for trainers and jockeys was also built, located on the site of the current Head-on Stand. 20th Century 1911 saw further development with a new weighing room at Rowley Mile (now known as the Hong Kong Suite) designed by Walter Brierley. New and more modest stands for the public and Jockey Club members were also built. As crowds grew at the July Course’s summer meetings, concern over extending facilities and ruining the ‘picnic atmosphere’ were debated. In the 1930s, five main buildings were constructed The Weighing Room, Head-on Stand, and 3 similar structures for Members, Tattersalls, and Silver Ring patrons. These still form the primary trackside viewing facilities today.

The most significant early development within racing in Newmarket came in 1665, when King Charles II, added a third “Round Course” to the two already existing courses in Newmarket, the Beacon Course (today the Rowley Mile) and the Cambridgeshire Course All three courses were to be used for a new race which was first run in 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate It was stated that the race should be run “forever”, and it continues to be run today. Due to the nature of racing at the time agile viewing was required, with spectators largely looking on from horseback or carriages.

19th Century

Post-War Decades Immediately following the second world war, the July Course saw crowds grow for its summer Derby Day to levels of attendance not seen today. However it was not to last and in 1954 declining attendance figures brought proposals for a round course in front of the Rowley Mile stands, with the suggestion it would make it easier for spectators to view. In 1958 a round course was laid out and it was used until 1973 1980s to Present The most recent stage in the Rowley Mile’s evolution is the Millennium Stand, which was unveiled by the Queen on 6 May 2000 The Rowley Mile and July Course can welcome up to 20,000 people Head-On Stand (1889-c.1929) right of Astley Stand, photographed 1896 1945 Derby at the July Course drew bigger crowds than we see today.

NEWMARKET RACECOURSES: ROWLEY MILE & JULY COURSE

The Round Course at Rowley Mile (1958-1973)

A number of courses have been in use in Newmarket over the centuries. The evolution of Rowley Mile and the July Course reflects how the sport has changed to be enjoyed by all, and not just the privileged few.

Rowley Mile’s Millennium Grandstand Today. Known for its racing and live music, The July Course remains one of Cambridgeshire’s most popular summer venues.

The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket in the 1750s had a significant impact on Newmarket heath’s physical environment, increasing racing provisions and changing it from the playground of the nobility it had been up to that point. By 1756 the Round Course built its first stand, simple in nature with stables below and viewing above At The Rowley Mile smaller racing facilities, a weighing house and stables were added and in 1774 the land used for racing was extended and formalised to become the Ancaster Mile

The Home of British Racing is such a special destination for racegoers from all over the world to congregate and appreciate the magnificent racing on both The Rowley Mile and on The July Course. We sincerely thank Sophie Able and her team along with Stephen Wallis for their never-ending enthusiasm in insuring that Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff are all looked after so very well. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all those who participate in Newmarket this season, the very best of luck. Stay safe and have a wonderful raceday.

Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath by George Stubbs shows a trainer stable lad and a jockey Gimcrack was one of the most popular and admired of all 18th century racehorses. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.

OUR ORIGINS T: 0844 579 3010 W: newmarketracecourses.co.uk

The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it. New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body: The Jockey Club Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.

It is only in relatively recent history that racing has been staged on an organised basis. Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys

NEWMARKET NEWS

“Ralph was born in Chester which is near where Alex, my youngest son and Sam, his wife live. He came home for the first few days but then he went into hospital at Chester with jaundice, however they thought he had something up with his heart.

80 YEAR OLD COLIN MOORE AIMING TO MAKE FAMILY PROUD AS HE BIDS TO BECOME OLDEST WINNER OF TOWN PL ATE

However, on Tuesday, February 8th Ralph was taken to the Countess Of Chester Hospital to receive treatment for high-level jaundice, but his condition began to deteriorate and he was transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital with a suspected heart problem

Back in February the passionate amateur, who rode his sole winner over jumps aboard 50-1 chance Son Of Tam at Worcester in November 1961, became a granddad for the third time when his youngest son Alex, and wife Sam, welcomed Ralph into the world.

After spending several days on a ventilator on the intensive care unit at the Liverpool-based hospital Ralph was finally allowed to go home on Saturday, February 10th when his heart scan came back clear where it was discovered he was fighting an infection.

As a mark of thanks for the work carried out by the staff Moore is now aiming to raise £500 from his latest efforts in the saddle in the amateur rider contest, which was inaugurated in 1666, to help enable the hospital to continue their good work Moore said: “I’ve already got two granddaughters but my first grandson arrived this year, however he was very poorly for the first few weeks when he was born.

“Apart from riding I have an exercise bike and I go out on the road bike as well while I do a little of bit of weight training as well

“Everything has been going well on the bike except for when I went out on the road bike about the other weekend.

“It was quite upsetting, as they said to Alex and Sam go home and get clothes as you will have to stay there and he was transferred off in a little oxygen tent on his own by the North West and North Wales Paediatric Transport Service from Chester to Liverpool.

When it comes to fitness Moore has made sure he has left no stone unturned ahead of getting the leg up on Ballyrath in the unique event which was inaugurated by King Charles II in 1666, who remains the sole monarch to win the race Moore, who will also be raising cash for t=The Injured Jockeys’ Fund, added:

The possibility of a place in the history books might beckon for rider Colin Moore in the Newmarket Town Plate today, but he knows whatever the outcome he is already on to a winner when inspirational grandson Ralph greets him after the historic contest Remaining as enthusiastic as ever at the age of 80, the former Jump jockey admits it would mean “everything” if he could become the oldest rider to win the race, which will be run in memory of former trainer Julie Cecil, following a difficult few months

“The team there did a great job and I just felt like I wanted to help them and hopefully I can raise a few pounds doing this His ordeal has definitely helped act as an inspiration for doing this year’s race

“I’ve been riding out a hell of a lot at Gary Hanmer’s where Ballyrath is now based I’ve been riding up to six lots a day and in that heat a few weeks ago it was a bit of a killer

“They stayed in there for a few days as he was quite serious with his condition as he was on a ventilator in intensive care Thankfully he now he is fine and he will be there on Saturday which is great

“He is now six months old and he is a big bonny lad now so I don’t think he will be a jockey but it will be nice for him to carry the name on.”

“I do think I’m a bit of a freak that I can still do this but although I packed up race riding I never really stopped as I’ve always been riding out somewhere even when I went into the reinforced concrete business after racing “I do sometimes think why am I doing it because of my age but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t feel right There will be a time and a day when I do say no but I still get a buzz out of it, even riding work.”

He added: “He won at Wetherby back in January with Tabitha (Worsley) on him I had a feeling he would get a place so I backed him at 40-1 each-way then I backed him at 66-1 to win. He seems to like Wetherby as it is his sort of track.

Having previously hinted that this year’s race would be his last appearance in it Moore is not ruling out return to the contest the 2023 after revealing he has another horse waiting in the wings if he decides to give it another crack.

To make a donation to either charity, go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colin moore19 (for Alder Hey) and https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/colin-moore18 (for The Injured Jockeys’ Fund).

“Hopefully we will get a few cart off down to the start to use up some of their energy! He is really well at the moment however and he will probably go back to Wetherby after this

“The odds are probably against him now with it going to two miles one as he is a good stayer but if he turns up thinking I fancy it he will go close if he is in the other mood he won’t.”

“Lester Piggott was my absolute idol but he wouldn’t show any emotion apart from smile a bit, and I’d definitely do more than that “Everybody is totally behind me and a lot of Gary’s owners want to support the Injured Jockeys’ Fund.”

Moore said: “I’m not sure about riding in it after this year we will have to see as 80 is a nice round number If I do it will be on our other horse Daranova and I think he would go very close as he is only eight.

Despite Moore believing the distance of this year’s race, which is being staged over two miles one furlong opposed to its traditional distance of three and three quarter miles due to watering restrictions, he feels he is no forlorn hope if in the right frame of mind

“We are going to have to be up near the pace on Saturday in the Town Plate with it being only two mile one this year

Having spent the past week re-charging his batteries for the Town Plate with a short break to Monaco it has given Moore the chance to think how he would celebrate if securing victory next weekend, and he revealed that tears of joy could well be seen

Ballyrath, like Moore, might now be in the twilight of his career at the age of 12 but he already has one win to his name this year after making his first start under rules for 960 days a triumphant one when springing a 66-1 shock at Wetherby back in January.

“I think I’d be quite emotional and I probably cry if I did win what with Ralph being there and with it being on old Ballyrath, who has been an absolute cracker for us,” added Moore.

“There is one big hill I go up, I got round that, then I got into the next village a mile and a half from home then I got a puncture so I had to walk back with it!”

AF TER FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH FAMOUS R ACE

PHIPPS TO REKINDLE TOWN PL ATE INTEREST 40 YEARS

When it comes to capturing the spirit of what it means to participate in the Newmarket Town Plate, look no further than enthusiastic amateur rider Fred Phipps, who is set to renew his affiliation with the race 40 years on from his previous association with it

Back in 1982 as a fresh faced teenager Phipps watched on as his then girlfriend Ginny Belding, on her first ride, partnered Goldgetter, who was entered by his mother Angela Phipps, to finish a gallant second in the historic contest behind Viewed Away Four decades on and the 57 year old will swap watching the race, which this year is being run in memory of former trainer and winner of the 1959 race Julie Cecil, to taking part in the amateur only event aboard the Roy Brotherton-trained Christopher Robin.

Fred Phipps & Christopher Robin Phipps said: “I got the fondness for the race from Goldgetter finishing second as it was just a great thing to do and there was a really good atmosphere.

“He is a bit of a reluctant hero but he loves his racing If we can keep the combination together and have a good run that would be fabulous.”

“I remember getting to the course and putting the horse in the stables over on the Links then I went back to walk the course.

“We got to the start and started walking it then it

“It is something I’ve always had on my mind since then if we dropped on the right horse which hopefully Christopher Robin is “Everybody there wants to get as close to the front as possible. Not coming last would be a step in the right direction as he has come last in his last two flat races but that is against proper flat horses quickening away from him He is a real gem and a really kind horse.

Plenty of time might have passed since his first encounter with the Town Plate, however Phipps has vivid memories of the day and of Goldgetter, whom he held a similar connection to the one he has with Christopher Robin, who is owned by his family Phipps, who is based in Kersoe, Worcestershire said: “My mother at the time worked for John Spearing and I subsequently went on to work for him as well “Goldgetter was ironically who Roy Brotherton had ridden first time out in a maiden point-to-point for somebody else then we ended up with him ourselves.

NEWMARKET NEWS

Although under no illusions of the task ahead, Phipps, riding in his first race since 2004, is looking forward to lining up in the unique prize which was inaugurated in 1666 by King Charles II, who remains the only monarch to win it, on Saturday 27th August

Describing himself as a “terrible” jockey following a handful of rides, Phipps has since gone on to run a successful mobile catering business However despite his short lived spell in the saddle he admits he was keen to keep his foot in the door

dawned on us that we were going to be walking almost four miles with the walk we had to the start so we left ourselves a bit tight on time and we probably ended up running the second half of it to get back

“It was a great race with plenty of runners in and the horse that won was a really good open point-to point horse which went on to run under rules

By Graham Clark

“It helped me tremendously and it was great fun. It keeps your head straight with something to do “Like many other people it was the first time me and my wife had been at home for a summer in 30 years so it gave us a slightly different perspective and we thought there is no reason why we couldn’t have Bank Holiday Saturday off to do this.”

He said: “One of the key factors was when Covid arrived and it stopped our business as such I went back to work for Tom Gretton and I really loved it

He added: “I used to ride out for Roy a lot when I was a teenager and in my early twenties He is the funniest man you will ever meet and the hardest working chap and just a fantastic guy to work for.

“He has enough ability tucked away it is whether he decides to use it is the key. We were lucky to buy him and he really is the family pet and that is where the value is for us

“I thought if we can earn a bit of money further down the line and have a point-to-pointer that is probably the best way to do it

“I ended up working for John Spearing as an assistant trainer I had a few rides pointing and in bumpers and over fences I was terrible, and desperately disappointing

Like many other businesses

“I’ve not probably watched a race there for years That is the only disadvantage that of I’m there I’m working so I don’t get too involved with the racing It is a lovely place to work and great to be involved with it.”

Pushing for victory in the Town Plate, which will be staged over the shorter trip of two miles one this year, might be a lofty target according to Phipps, but he knows that whatever the outcome Christopher Robin will get treated like a winner by his family

He said: “He has got ability but he does need a bit of a trip and he needs three miles plus over hurdles

“I got to my mid 20s and I thought I’m never going to make it as a jockey and I’ve not got the head or the skill to be a trainer so I bet get out and earn the living.

“In 1991 we ended by chance in a cafe on the outskirts of Worcester. We basically developed that business and the catering side and a few other bits of pieces and that has been it for the past 30 years.”

The ambition of every jump jockey to walk back into the winner’s enclosure at the Cheltenham Festival and while Phipps knows that will only ever remain the thing of dreams he does have a long standing connection with the home of National Hunt racing He added: “We are at Cheltenham races every meeting with a donut unit and we have a couple of others there for The Festival “To be honest I don’t get to see much of the racing at Cheltenham All I see all day is a donuts and a queue of people!

“Our horse ran then ran in a novice chase at Market Rasen where Peter Hobbs rode it then I had one of my first point-to-point rides on and my first ride under Rules on aboard the horse at Towcester in a hunter chase. He was a kind little horse that was fun.”

“The fast ground won’t worry him and we thought the three and three quarter miles of the plate he would enjoy but obviously the race has been shortened now.

“It doesn’t matter to him if he finishes first or last as he thinks he has won the Gold Cup anyway He gets such a fuss made afterwards it doesn’t make any difference.”

Phipps company The Mobile Catering Group took a hit with the Covid pandemic in 2020 However it was during this time that helped him re-discover his passion for riding and spur him on to find a horse capable of contesting the Town Plate.

The recent rainfall could spell trouble for several of these but it won’t be an issue for HELVETIAN, who looked on good terms with himself when scoring at Pontefract. He remains on a workable mark following a 4lb rise and, while this is a tougher assignment, the likely strong gallop could see things teed up nicely for him. Han Solo Berger is back down to the mark off which he was successful at Yarmouth in June and is next on the list ahead of Dusky Prince and Lipsink.

The Newmarket Town Plate is, allegedly, the oldest and longest flat race in the world instituted in 1665 by King Charles II and first run in 1666 to be run ‘forever’.

POWTERS and GOLDING OF NEWMARKET are delighted to be supporting this historic race.

Horses were to carry twelve stones and run over the Round Course of three and three-quarter miles.

THE NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE

The Plate was the first with a set of Rules, for example:

“Every rider that layeth hold on, or striketh any of the riders, shall win no plate or prize”.......“Whosoever winneth the plate or prize shall give to the Clerk of the Course twenty shillings, to be distributed to the poor both sides of Newmarket, and twenty shillings to the Clerk of the Race for which he is to keep the course plain andfree from cart roots”.......“No man is admitted to ride for thisprize that is either a serving man or groom.”

The original race was run after three heats on the (then) new Round Course; “on the outside of the Ditch from Newmarket, shall leave all the posts and flags the first and last heats on the right hand and the second on the left hand by starting and ending at the weighing post, by Cambridge Gap, called Thomond’s Post.” Half” an hour was allowed between heats, after which the final itself was run within an hour and a half. Today’s race is thereforeeasy by yesterday’s standards!

Cecil, who was the first wife of legendary trainer Sir Henry Cecil and daughter of fellow Classic-winning handler Sir Noel Murless, won the 1959 renewal of the Town Plate as a 17 year old aboard Adam’s Walk Ted Jones who led up the horse when Julie won (pictured below) will be judging the Best Turned Out award.

Noel Cecil continued: “She trained as well being a rider and my father trained as well and so did her father, so racing had been her upbringing all of her life

OF JULIE

“Back then a lot of the winners of the race were women as there were not the opportunities for them to ride in races under Rules like now.

“She trained on her own after she went her separate ways from my father but what was quite nice was that Lester (Piggott) rode her first ever winner given that he had ridden winners for her father in the past.

“I can’t remember word for word what she said about the Town Plate when she won it but the horse was trained by Humphrey Cottrill who I don’t think had many winners that season

Julie’s son, Noel Cecil, said: “It is a very nice thought and we are very touched that the race is being run in her memory as it is a big honour.

Following their divorce Cecil, who was also mum to daughter Katie, took out her own licence in 1991 and trained out of Southgate Stables in Newmarket where she saddled 190 winners until giving up her licence in 1998

“She was quite unique and had a great sense of humour She loved her sports and she was a real fun person She had lots of friends in the sport and really loved her racing

During her time married to Sir Henry between 1966 and 1990, Cecil played a crucial role in her former husband’s success which saw him win the first of his four Derby victories at Epsom Downs in 1985 with Slip Anchor and in 1987 with Reference Point

“Following her death everyone has been so kind and racing is really good like that.” TOWN TO BE RUN IN MEMORY CECIL

Twenty years after her Town Plate success Cecil was awarded the prize for the most winners ridden by a woman in her first season riding in 1979 In total, Cecil rode 10 winners before she decided to call time on riding at the age of 46.

“I think as she won the race she always quite liked it as it was quite an achievement and she was pretty chuffed to have won it.”

Although best remembered for saddling Alderbrook to Group Two glory in the Prix Dollar in 1994 it is her first winner, Golan Heights, who landed the Remy Martin VSOP Cognac Handicap on the Rowley Mile in April 1991, that Noel feels really stands out.

Kirsty is excited to be taking part again in the Town Plate, having competed last year and 12 months on she lines up on her brother’s horse. As a full-time mum, she finds the race a good thing to aim for, both for fitness and to have something completely different to work on.

It was 40 years ago that Fred saw Goldgetter, owned by his mother Angela and ridden by his then girlfriend Ginny Belding, finish second in the 1982 Town Plate Having had a handful of rides in the 1980s, Fred now runs a mobile catering business and when his business stopped during lockdown in 2020, he returned to the saddle to ride out for trainers Tom Gretton and Roy Brotherton.

She is a regular exercise rider at Charlie Fellowes Racing.

Making his third appearance in the Town Plate, Colin’s reason for riding in it again is because at 80 years old he feels it may be his final chance to do so He rode as a professional in the 1960s before weight issues forced him to retire. He is aiming to raise funds for the Injured Jockeys Fund and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

The race was most recently not run in 2020 due to the recent pandemic but before this, the race was first abandoned in 1940 when the War Office asked the Jockey Club to cancel racing at Hurst Park, Windsor and Newmarket. The third week of September was judged to be a likely period for invasion and they needed to be on highest alert to resist a landing in Suffolk or Essex. It was then assumed that the race was not run for the following two years, hence this now being the 352nd running.
