FEATURING SIR TOM JONES LIVE AFTER RACING
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Weatherbys Super Sprint Day, featuring eight high class races on one of Newbury’s stand-out summer racedays.
The Weatherbys Super Sprint was established in 1991 and has become a major target for speedy two-year-olds that were bought at auction. This is the 32nd running of the race which has played host to some outstanding winners in the past, including the likes of Superstar Leo, Tiggy Wiggy, Happy Romance, Gubbass and most recently Eddie’s Boy.
Many thanks to long-term sponsors Weatherbys for their continued generous support and this year we celebrate their 30th year of sponsorship. A big thanks to today’s other sponsors bet365, Mettal UK, Darley and the British European Breeders Fund.
Sir Tom Jones will return to the Party in the Paddock stage to perform following this afternoon’s racing. If you have close proximity access you can collect your wristbands at any point throughout the day from the collections gazebo in the Grandstand Enclosure.
Parkinson’s UK will be operating a bucket collection at both the east and south entrances from 4:20pm until after the concert finishes. I know I speak on behalf of Parkinson’s UK when I say any and all donations would be warmly received.
Looking ahead, there is plenty still to enjoy this summer including the finale of our new Summer Evening Series on Thursday 27 July with The Cocktail Club. This raceday promises an evening of exciting racing and Ibiza vibes on the Crafty Filly Terrace including a live saxophonist and an afterparty We are also pleased to be able to offer stable staff free entry for this evening with a valid ID or letter from their employer.
Our second Party in the Paddock raceday then arrives on Saturday 19 August for BetVictor Hungerford Day with Olly Murs performing live after racing. Discounted tickets are still available for this raceday, but only until Friday 28 July.
As ever, there’s free Wi-Fi available for use today in all public areas and if you have any questions or queries during your time with us please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable time and that we will see you again next week for the finale of our Summer Evening Series with The Cocktail Club on Thursday 27 July.
Julian Thick Chief Executive Newbury RacecourseGet up close to the action and join ex jumps jockey
David Crosse on trips to the start where you can see the horses sprint out of the stalls! Meet 20 minutes before the race at the designated meeting point, left hand side of the weighing room in the Grandstand Enclosure. This is on a first come first served basis.
2.40 for the 3.00 race
3.50 for the 4.10 race
The award-winning bar is back serving a variety of drinks, with ample seating and live acoustic music throughout the afternoon. Plus keep an eye out for our roaming band performing your favourite sing-alongs.
Sir Tom Jones is performing live after racing on the Party in the Paddock stage in the Grandstand Enclosure. If you have close proximity access for the concert the collection point and entry is from the gazebo in the Grandstand Enclosure marked 15 on the racecard map and wristbands are available to collect throughout the day.
From 19.30 we will have a free shuttle bus running from the Eastern Entrance to Newbury Bus Station until 21.30.
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

It is over 30 years since the first running of The Weatherbys Super Sprint, and its innovative race conditions see it open to horses that were sold at public auction as yearlings or two-year-olds for £65,000 or less. The weights are allocated so that each horse running carries 1lb less for every £5,000 less than £65,000. Those competing will be bidding for a share of the total prize fund of £250,000.
The race was specifically framed to give good value horses the chance of a big pay day and took place for the first time in 1991 under the name “Newbury Sales Super Sprint Trophy”. It was in 1993 that Weatherbys sponsored the race for the first time and gave it the title “Weatherbys Super Sprint”.
The race has taken place every year since 1991, apart from 2007 due to heavy rainfall. The most successful trainer is Richard Hannon Sr who won the race seven times courtesy of Lyric Fantasy, Risky, Miss Stamper, Presto Vento, If Paradise, Lady Livius and Monsieur Chevalier. His son Richard Hannon Jr. has won the race four times and Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey have each had three winners of the race. From a riding angle, four jockeys have won the race
twice, Richard Hughes (Monsieur Chevalier and Tiggy Wiggy), Michael Hills (Brief Glimpse and Superstar Leo), Michael Roberts (Lyric Fantasy and Good Girl) and Sean Levey (Happy Romance and Gubbass).
Many horses to have run in The Weatherbys Super Sprint have gone on to achieve great things, most recently 2020 winner Happy Romance who is now a seven-time winner, including
Eddie’s Boy (leading) - last year’s winner of The Weatherbys Super Sprint Richard Hannon - four time winner.twice at Group level and Grade 1 placed – earning nearly £750,000 in price money. Not bad for a £25,000 yearling purchase!
Arguably the most successful winners in the race’s history are Tiggy Wiggy and Lyric Fantasy.
Tiggy Wiggy built on her success with a win in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes before completing the hat-trick in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. The flying filly also finished in the Classic frame when coming home in third in the 1000 Guineas. Lyric Fantasy, aka ‘The Pocket Rocket’, became the Champion 2yo in the same year as landing the super Sprint and indeed the highest rated filly of 1992. Her most notable success however, was in the Nunthorpe Stakes in which she became one of only three juveniles to win a Group One race in open-age competition
Temple Meads landed the first prize of £100,000 in 2010, before winning the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes later in the season back here at Newbury.
The 2009 winner Monsieur Chevalier went on to achieve glory in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, emulating Risky who had completed the same double seventeen years earlier. Unfortunately, injury prevented his return to the track as a three-year-old but he returned back to his best form as a four-year-old when
finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning a Listed race at Goodwood.
In 2005, we saw a shock when the Martin Dwyer-ridden Lady Livius stormed home to win at odds of 100/1, the longest priced winner to date. Apart from Peniaphobia and Tiggy Wiggy, who did it in successive years, the only time that a horse has dipped under the minute mark in this five furlongs sprint was in 2000 when Superstar Leo stormed home in 59.19 seconds before going on to finish second in two Group 1s, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Phoenix Stakes. Fillies have a good strike rate, possibly down to the 5lb allowance that they receive from the colts. 17 of the 31 renewals of this race have been won by fillies. Happy Romance was victorious in 2020 for the successful team of Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, who teamed up again to win with Gubbass in 2021. The talented colt was given a fine ride by his jockey and showed fine subsequent juvenile form, finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.
Last year’s winner Eddie’s Boy progressed to win a Group 3 race in France later in the season before being sold for 320,000 Guineas to race on in Qatar.
Saturday marks the 30th anniversary of Weatherbys’ sponsorship of the Super Sprint, with Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary Stakes second Relief Rally heading 21 confirmations for the £250,000 feature event.
She will be bidding to give William Haggas a third win in the race, following success with Superstar Leo in 2000 and Jargelle eight years later. Just like Superstar Leo, who remains one of only three winners so far to dip under a minute for the Super Sprint and still holds the race record of 59.19 seconds, Relief Rally began her racecourse career early by the stable’s usual standards, winning on her debut at Windsor in April.
She gave clear notice there that she was a cut above the average and she earned her ticket to Royal Ascot by overcoming a penalty in a conditions race at Salisbury next time, upsetting favourite Juniper Berries, who is among her possible opponents again. She then went desperately close to completing the hat-trick in the Queen Mary, where she was putting in good late work at the finish and was only beaten on the nod by the speedy American filly Crimson Advocate.
As a 58,000 guinea yearling, carrying a small penalty, Relief Rally will have significantly more weight than Superstar Leo, who was bred in partnership by Haggas’ father-in-law Lester Piggott and Tony Hirschfeld and was bought back for a mere 3,400 guineas by his wife Maureen at the sales, but she is nevertheless the stand-out on form. If all goes well here, she is likely to be aimed at York’s Lowther Stakes and could finish off in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp, in which her predecessor was second.
Haggas said: “Relief Rally got the entry for the Super Sprint because she was bred to be quick and cost less than the ceiling £65,000, so it’s been on our radar for a while. She got a small penalty for her Salisbury win, but it would have been a much bigger one if she had won the Queen Mary, although we would have been happy to have taken one there.
“The American filly was obviously very quick in the Queen Mary, but we were unfortunate not to win, as she was in front a stride before the line and in front again a stride after it, but not on the line.”
He added: “Unlike Superstar Leo, who had no weight despite having won the Norfolk Stakes, Relief Rally has nine stone, but if she’s good enough to win on Saturday I think she’ll go for the Lowther, then the Flying Childers, which Superstar Leo also won, and then the Abbaye, where Superstar Leo was second to Namid.
“Whether she’ll train on nobody knows, but she’s very like another Kodiac filly we had called Besharah, who won the Lowther Stakes at two and then showed some good form without winning again at three.”
Superstar Leo ended the year the highest rated juvenile filly on the classifications, and she has gone on to have major lasting significance for the stable.
Haggas said: “She’s been marvellous. She introduced us to the Jacksons, of Lael Stables, who have been big supporters ever since, and she bred Enticing (winner of the Molecomb and King George Stakes), who was the dam of One Master (three-time winner of the Prix de la Foret). Her sister Starship is the dam of Rivet, who won the Racing Post Trophy for us.
“It’s been a hell of a family for us and a wonderful story, and the Jacksons were so fond of Superstar Leo that when she retired they flew her back to Kentucky so that she could spend the rest of her life in their front paddock.”
Juniper Berries’ trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, who had beaten favourite Chipotle here two years ago, has another possible danger in Bobsleigh, who won his first two races before finishing sixth in the Coventry Stakes, while the Richard Hannon stable, which has won the Super Sprint no fewer than 11 times, has seven possibles declared, among them Goodwood winner La Guarida.
Rod Millman, who won with Lord Kintyre (1997) and Bettys Hope (2019, always targets the Super Sprint and has Goodwood winner Beenham and Chepstow winner Crooked Crown. Last year’s winning trainer Archie Watson has Saturday’s Hamilton winner Heed The Call.
Irish runners are rare and none has won yet, but Kieran Cotter has confirmed dual Tipperary winner Son Of Corballis.

Race Summary: SAVETHELASTDANCE has shown plenty of ability in her career to date and she holds the most compelling claims in this contest. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old looked a superstar when winning easily in the Cheshire Oaks before running with plenty of credit when second in the Oaks at Epsom last time, therefore she should take the beating. Warm Heart won the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot on her previous outing and is feared most, although she will have to improve again to score here, while Bluestocking completes the shortlist.

TIMEFORM VIEW Fetched 680,000 gns as a yearling and form of the Wolverhampton novice (9.5f) in which she finished fourth on her introduction during the winter is working out well. That experience won’t be wasted on her and, provided she’s tuned-up following a break, improvement is on the cards here.

Race Summary: RED DANIELLE’s latest effort can be excused and she is appealing in view of her debut promise at Goodwood where she was touched off by a potentially useful type in Royal Mila (winner again since), in turn pulling nicely clear of the re-opposing Malka in third. Maman Joon is the one to beat judged on her effort in the Oaks and it will be disappointing if she’s not involved in the finish. Mambo Sunset and the Gosden’s representatives, Deep Dive and Sweet Memories, are also of interest.
