TRAINERS TO WATCH
DONALD MCCAIN is always a trainer to fear at this venue and today looks no exception He’s been firing in the winners of late, with 8 successes from his last 41 runners, and once again holds a strong hand on the card PHILIP KIRBY is another very much in the groove, operating at a cracking 36% strike-rate over the past fortnight He sends just the one runner to the meeting, so Madame Pomone in the 1.15pm is certainly worth a second look The OLIVER GREENALL & JOSH GUERRIERO team have also been amongst the winners, landing 4 from their last 19 runners here, and both Disguisedlimit in the 1.45pm and Passing Pleasure in the 3.15pm look to hold solid claims of adding to that tally.

CHASE
2.15 THE NAIRNS OATCAKES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race
Many of the runners aged four-year-olds and upwards in this two mile, three and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is also for novices only
This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards novices which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.
This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105.
Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
2.45 THE 2BLOKESGORACING.COM HANDICAP CHASE
This three miles handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
3.15 THE MUSSELBURGH ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP HURDLE
Our finale this afternoon is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
