‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

None of the trio can be ruled out but CAPTAIN HUGO looked an excellent prospect when going in at Newbury last month and can improve sufficiently to thwart Ben Pauling’s stylish Stratford scorerTaurus Baywho also has better days ahead of him. Hereford victor Race To Base can’t be discounted either in an intriguing contest.

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty are in with a shout but the improving GLANCE OF GLORY did well to maintain his unbeaten record for the season at Worcester after a late blunder and can complete a hat-trick on his first attempt at 3m now. Christian Williams’ handicap debutant Dixie Mafia appeals as a likely improver and could emerge as the chief threat, although in-form pair Sandscape and Princesse Milania can both have a say too. Top Guy completes the shortlist.

EDELAK’s dam is a half-sister to a winning hurdler and he is a fascinating recruit for the Dan Skelton yard, having shown plenty of ability on the Flat in Ireland this year, most recently landing a Galway maiden with a good deal of authority Bound to have been well-schooled ahead ofthis hurdles debut, Edelak shades preference ahead ofTreasure Planet, who did the job well at Ludlow on his second start in this sphere. Scarlet Moon also looks promising and merits respect, along with Bibe Mus.

10YEAR ROLLOF HONOUR

2023 WINNER

TRAINER: VENETIA WILLIAMS

JOCKEY: LUCY TURNER

OWNER: DAVID & CAROL SHAW

The 2023 renewal produced a stirring performance as Chambard stormed to victory for Venetia Williams, relishing every yard of the gruelling heavy ground. Fresh from an eyecatching runner-up effort at the Cheltenham November Meeting, the seasoned chaser built on that promise in no uncertain terms, delivering a commanding display on his first spin over these famous fences.

At home in the testing conditions, Chambard recaptured the spark that carried him to Kim Muir glory back in 2022. Lucy Turner kept him in the firing line throughout, with her handy 5lb claim, as her mount jumped and travelled with purpose.

The decisive moment came at the 17th, where Chambard swept to the front. The veteran powered further and further clear, ultimately cantering home an emphatic 13-length winner Coko Beach, running off a lofty 162, stuck to his task admirably to claim second, holding offthe well-treated Percussion.

8⁄12

KEY CONTENDERS

MR VANGO

MrVango looks a rock-solid market leader and these fences shouldn’t trouble him on his first spin over them.

A real force over staying trips last season, he signed off with a terrific hat-trick, bagging the London National, the Peter Marsh, and the Midlands Grand National.

If he’s straight enough on return, he ought to take plenty of pegging back. Any rain would likely make him a stronger favourite.

HHHHH

WESTERNINTHEPARK

Soft or heavy ground would play right into Westerninthepark’s hooves, though he might not get conditions to suit this time

Still lightly raced at 3 miles, he shaped with plenty of intent on his reappearance at Carlisle, travelling strongly before running out of steam at the last. With that run under his belt, there’s every chance he’ll strip fitter today.

HHHH

ICONIC HORSES

BILL BAXTER

Warren Greatrex’s Bill Baxter makes plenty of each-way appeal under Sam Twiston-Davies.

A cracking winner at the Punchestown Festival last term, he took a Listed 0–150 handicap right in the Irish’s own backyard.

ATopham hero over these fences in 2023, he’s already blown away the cobwebs with a hurdles run, and looks primed to give a bold account once again.

HHHH

MAHONS GLORY

Now a seasoned campaigner at 13, Mahons Glory may no longer have youth on his side, but his know-how around these unique fences is a major plus.

A game fourth in last month’s Grand Sefton, he jumped like an pro and seemed to relish bowling along in front. If deployed with the same positive tactics today, he looks a lively player once again. The Step up in trip could unlock further progress.

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.

PARADE RING ACCESS

In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses

competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

A fascinating clash between a handful of promising hurdlers. SOBER GLORY was impressive at Chepstow and gets the vote to remain unbeaten. Hurricane Pat is 2-3 at Sandown for a yard no stranger to success in this race so he’s put up for the forecast spot but a win for any of the 5 would come as no surprise.

THEBETFAIRHENRYVIIINOVICES’CHASE

The Henry VIII chase has a fine record for producing stars of the future. This two mile chase has been graced in the past by many a superstar, not least Altior in 2016, with the race forming part of his record-beating run of Grade 1 wins. He would also later go on to win the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, today’s feature, and that has become a common theme in recent years. The 2021 winner, Edwardstone, followed the same path in winning the Henry VIII followed by the Betfair Tingle Creek in 2022 and history repeated itself with Jonbon landing the spoils in today’s feature two years ago. L’EAU DU SUD looks every bit as good as some of the former winners and will be hoping to follow in their footsteps in winning the Betfair Tingle Creek today.

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty in with a squeak but preference is for KNICKERBOCKERGLORY, who bolted up in this on return last year and Dan Skelton’s charge can enhance an already superb record fresh. His main threat may emerge from Go Dante, who made it back-to-back Imperial Cups over C&D in the spring and should be spot on with his reappearance under his belt. 5-y-o Glynn Brae looks best of the rest.

THEBETFAIRTINGLECREEK

One of the stand-out two mile chases of the season, the Betfair Tingle Creek attracts the best of the best. First run in 1969 as the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, the race has been graced by some of the true greats in its deep history. Desert Orchid is a name that jumps out on any roll of honour and won the race back in 1988 under Simon Sherwood. 11 years later the races’ most successful horse, Flagship Uberalles won the first of this three consecutive victories, spanning 1999-2001. Paul Nicholls won six renewals on the bounce from 2005-2010 with Kauto Star, Master Minded and Twist Magic sharing two wins a piece. Paul Nicholls himself is the race’s leading trainer with a remarkable 12 wins in total. Fast forwarding to more recent times and the list of illustrious names doesn’t stop, with Sprinter Sacre (2012), Sire De Grugy (2013 & 2015), Altior (2018) and dual winner Jonbon (2023&24) all etching their names into history. Today Jonbon goes in search of a historic third consecutive victory. TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF £175,000 £96,662 TO THE WINNER

Last year’s renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek went the way of Jonbon and Nicky Henderson for a second successive time. Sent off 8/13F, Nico de
