Main Grandstand -Track Side

Welcome to Sandown Park for Betfair Tingle Creek Day, the highlight of our Winter, featuring two fantastic Grade 1 chases and showcasing the best against the best.
The Betfair Tingle Creek is one of only four two-mile open Grade 1 chases in the UK, with a history of dramatic finishes and exciting races. Named after Tingle Creek, who had a particularly good record at Sandown Park, the race requires accurate jumping and an electric turn of foot
Off the track, we have something for everyone to enjoy. Racegoers can meet former Betfair Tingle Creek winner Politologue from 11.30am on the Summer Lawn or can learn more about being a jockey with Charlie Poste in Surrey Hall. If you’re wanting to get in the Christmas spirit, head over to the Winter Wonderland Bavarian Village in Esher Hall or wander down to the Christmas Market which is based trackside along the final furlong
I would also like to thank one of our Annual Members, Mike Parcej, who took the time to get in touch with me about why Betfair Tingle Creek Day is so special to him: “Betfair Tingle Creek Day always showcases the best of National Hunt Racing, but twenty years ago it delivered something unforgettable: a race that, for me, remains the greatest of this century. Remarkably, it didn’t come from the feature Grade 1 contests, reminding us that this sport’s magic can emerge from any race, at any level.
“Earlier that afternoon, we had watched Kauto Star begin his rise to greatness in the Tingle Creek and Racing Demon take the Henry VIII As gloom settled over Sandown Park and the London National began, no one expected anything extraordinary. It was, on paper, one of the weakest renewals since the race moved to Saturday. Yet what followed was an eight-minute masterclass in everything that makes jump racing special.
“With a circuit to go, it was clear the race would be fought between Brave Spirit and Willie John Daly, ridden by Mick Fitzgerald and Richard Johnson Down the Railway Straight they jumped in perfect harmony, trading blows like heavyweight boxers. Over the final fences they eyeballed each other, neither giving an inch. Brave Spirit edged ahead before a huge blunder at the second last handed momentum to Willie John Daly Still, Brave Spirit rallied fiercely, and they fought to the line, Willie John Daly winning by a short head. The crowd erupted—an unforgettable, spine-tingling moment that captured the true heart of the sport: the horses.”
I hope you all have a wonderful day with us and that, like Mike 20 years ago, you are captivated by the sport we have to offer on the track, whilst enjoying all the activities off the track.

Hurricane Pat is 2-3 at Sandown for a yard no stranger to success in this race so he’s put up for the forecast spot but a win for any of the 5 would come as no surprise.

Perhaps best to focus on the progressive youngsters at the bottom of the weights. ABSOLUTELY DOYEN looked to relish the step up to 3m at Ascot and is selected to make it 4-4 since joining Paul Nicholls. Turndlightsdownlow has impressed when landing 2 Kempton handicaps over shorter and will be a major threat if his stamina holds faced with a much stiffer test now. The Henry VIII chase has a fine record for producing stars of the future. This two mile chase has been graced in the past by many a superstar, not least Altior in 2016, with the race forming part of his record-beating run of Grade 1 wins. He would also later go on to win the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, today’s feature, and that has become a common theme in recent years. The 2021 winner, Edwardstone, followed the same path in winning the Henry VIII followed by the Betfair Tingle Creek in 2022 and history repeated itself with Jonbon landing the spoils in today’s feature two years ago. L’EAU DU SUD looks every bit as good as some of the former winners and will be hoping to follow in their footsteps in winning the Betfair Tingle Creek today.

One of the stand-out two mile chases of the season, the Betfair Tingle Creek attracts the best of the best. First run in 1969 as the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, the race has been graced by some of the true greats in its deep history. Desert Orchid is a name that jumps out on any roll of honour and won the race back in 1988 under Simon Sherwood. 11 years later the races’ most successful horse, Flagship Uberalles won the first of this three consecutive victories, spanning 1999-2001. Paul Nicholls won six renewals on the bounce from 2005-2010 with Kauto Star, Master Minded and Twist Magic sharing two wins a piece. Paul Nicholls himself is the race’s leading trainer with a remarkable 12 wins in total. Fast forwarding to more recent times and the list of illustrious names doesn’t stop, with Sprinter Sacre (2012), Sire De Grugy (2013 & 2015), Altior (2018) and dual winner Jonbon (2023 & 2024) all etching their names into history. Today Jonbon goes in search of a historic third consecutive victory.
TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF £175,000 £96,662 TO THE WINNER
Last year’s renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek went the way of Jonbon and Nicky Henderson for a second successive time. Sent off 8/13F, Nico de Boinville was sent up to challenge the early pace setter Quilixios, with the pair going stride for stride as they made their way down the back straight. At the railyway fences, Jonbon jumped his way into a marginal lead. Quilixios tried to go

None of the trio can be ruled out but CAPTAIN HUGO looked an excellent prospect when going in at Newbury last month and can improve sufficiently to thwart Ben Pauling’s stylish Stratford scorerTaurus Baywho also has better days ahead of him. Hereford victor Race To Base can’t be discounted either in an intriguing contest.

PLAY SMARTER
Plenty are in with a shout but the improving GLANCE OF GLORY did well to maintain his unbeaten record for the season at Worcester after a late blunder and can complete a hat-trick on his first attempt at 3m now. Christian Williams’ handicap debutant Dixie Mafia appeals as a likely improver and could emerge as the chief threat, although in-form pair Sandscape and Princesse Milania can both have a say too. Top Guy completes the shortlist.

Olly Murphy’s PLEASINGTON shaped well on his recent chasing bow when third at Wetherby and with this step up in trip a likely plus too he can come out on top in a fascinating novice handicap chase.
