Welcome to Kelso Racecourse for the first race meeting of the new season.
Tonight we’ll be helping to raise funds for the Borders Carers Centre, a charity which has a long association with the racecourse, and we would like to extend an especially warm welcome to all of those who have come to support this fantastic local cause. We hope that you have a very enjoyable evening.
RBC Brewin Dolphin and Abbey Fine Wines have both contributed generously to the charity through their race sponsorship activities and there will be additional opportunities for racegoers to donate directly via an exit-collection following the final race.
The start of a new season is always an exciting time, pregnant with potential, and so it’s fitting that the feature race has been named by Weatherbys to promote Paul Ferguson’s Annual Jumpers To Follow publication. We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors which, in addition to Weatherbys, RBC Brewin Dolphin and Abbey Fine Wines, include Racing TV and Belhaven Brewery
We would like to thank the connections of all today’s runners: the owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff. We couldn’t put on such a spectacle without you – so thank you for choosing to run at Kelso Whatever the result, whatever the finishing position of your horses, it’s a delight to see them and we hope that you enjoy a safe and enjoyable day
Good luck, have a fun evening, and thank you so much for coming.

How to Bet
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number
2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

HOW CAN WE HELP?
Carers Support Plan – We are commissioned by Scottish Borders Council to carry out the Carers Support Plan, which is a carer’s legal right.
The Borders Carers Centre is the only organisation in the Borders dedicated to providing direct support to unpaid carers.
This year we have seen an unprecedented amount of referrals to the service with an increasing amount of carers facing crisis in complex situations.
Carers are the largest source of care and support in each area of the UK. It is in everyone’s interest that they are supported.
• Taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression.
• Many carers give up an income, future employment prospects and pension rights to become a carer
• Many carers also work outside the home and are trying to juggle jobs with their responsibilities as carers.
• The majority of carers struggle alone and do not know that help is available to them.
• Carers say that access to information, financial support and breaks in caring are vital in helping them manage the impact of caring on their lives
How can we help?
• Practical help – emotional support, breaks, transport, benefits advice, help filling in forms
• Liaising with social work and health to ensure appropriate services are in place.
• Hospital discharge/liaison – intense support when your cared for is in hospital or about to be discharged.
• Emergency card – to help ‘put your mind at ease ’
• Training and education – in skills often needed by carers, such as moving and handling, first aid, and care giving; personal development; stress reduction through reflexology and aromatherapy. Our training is always carer led – so do tell us what you would like to see us offer Some of our most popular sessions have included ‘Coping with feelings of loss and change’ and ‘Dealing with guilt’.
• Training and education for professionals and the third sector in carer awareness
• Fun – time out, breaks, the opportunity to enjoy a social life, taking into account carers’ special needs and sense of isolation.
• Advocacy – at tribunals, assessments, case reviews, assistance to access funds and services, or whenever a carer needs a friend or supporter
The aim of our work is to help ensure that no carer has to reach crisis point before they get the support they need. In short, to make it easier for carers to cope.
Your support at events such as this allows us to reach and support more carers across the Scottish Borders and make a real difference to them and the people they care for. Thank you.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME
Race preview from Weatherbys
Race two on this afternoon’s card is the Jumpers To Follow Handicap Hurdle and after enjoying a great day on course last season, I am regrettablywatchingonfromhome onthisoccasion.
Last year’s class 2 contest was won by Nicky Richards’ evergreen – or ever-grey – 11-year-old Glinger Flame, who rolled back the years to win under Sean Quinlan. We have, however, seen progressive, younger horses come out on top in previous years, with subsequent high-class chaser Aye Right (rated 159 at his peak)successfuloffamarkof136at theageofsix, somefiveyearsago.
Last year’s class 2 contest was won by Nicky Richards’ Evergreen.
There are a mix of runners among the eight who face the starter this time around, with Baron de Midleton(aged11)andthe10-yearold Nayati the elder statesmen of theparty.
At the other end of the scale, both The Churchill Lad and Kinbara Firstdraft represent the five-yearold age group. The latter was a winner at Perth in July – on goodto-firm ground – and has been dropped3lbssincehislatestdefeat at the same track. That form looks quite useful, with the first and sixth
fighting out the finish back at Perth only last week, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Stuart Crawford’s runner bounce back to form in receipt of weight from all and over thisnew, longertrip.
The six-year-old Kaleb is another of the younger brigade and Amy Murphy’s gelding is back down to his latest winning mark (123), from Market Rasen in May. He dropped in trip when running with credit at Galway last month and if reproducing that level of form, should be involved here. Reverting toanintermediatetriplookstobea positive.
George Bewley’s Well Educated is the sole course winner in the field, with him having won races here in October 2022 and May this year. He was racing under a 7lbs penalty on that occasion – having won at Hexham just five days earlier – and he ran on well when beaten by Ashington at Cartmel during July. Thepairclashedagainwhenbehind Nayati(4th)attheCumbrianvenue and there wouldn’t appear to be a lotbetweenthetrio.
Aramax completes the field and has to concede weight to all. Twice a winner since joining Ben Haslam, he won the Fred Winter at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival and is now 10lbs lower. Although he probably isn’t the force of old, he is still only eightandshouldatleastappreciate returningtonicerground.

FAIRMAC has looked in need of the experience so far over hurdles but he should be getting the hang of things now and his opening mark is lenient based on Flat exploits, so he’s worth taking a chance on. Game Beaaa and Heart Above, both runner-up last time, could pose the main threats

SAFETY INFORMATION
A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
Alcohol & Substance Abuse
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.
Slips, Trips, Falls
We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient
Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day
Fences, Walls & Barriers
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment
Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight
Horses
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
Fires
We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.
Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces
Children
We welcome many children to Kelso races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
