Monday 17th April 2023

According to the historian J. Fairfax-Blakeborough, the first racemeeting took place on the Berrymoss at Kelso exactly two-hundred years and one day ago, on 16th April, 1823. While races had taken place nearby, at Caverton Edge, as early as 1734, the construction of a permanent grandstand heralded a new era and the Berrymoss became the first purpose build racecourse in Scotland.

Built to a design by the renowned Yorkshire based architect John Carr, the foundation stone for the grandstand was laid on 12th July, 1822. The stand is still in use today with the roof top providing one of the best views in British racing.

Kelso Races owes its existence to many inspirational individuals, including Reg and Bettie Tweedie who are recognised in the title of today’s fourth race. However, it is today’s participants that we’d particularly like to thank in this space. We couldn’t put on such a fantastic spectacle without the horses – so our sincere gratitude is extended to all the racehorse owners, trainers and jockeys associated with the today’s runners, as well as the stable staff who care for them.

We are grateful to all the racegoers who have ventured to Kelso today to help us celebrate this very special birthday Together you help to make the friendly atmosphere for which Kelso Racecourse has become known. Thank you for coming!

Finally, we’d like to extend an especially warm welcome to Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal who will mark the racecourse’s bicentenary by unveiling a stone plaque, prior to the first race, in the Winners Enclosure.

How to Bet

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number

2. Choose your bet

‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come frst

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come frst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifes as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - frst place only; between five and seven runners - frst and second place; eight runners and over - frst three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - frst four places

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ffth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Please gamble responsibly For more information visit www.gambleaware.co.uk

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

ANCIENT ORIGINS

It’s hard to imagine that horse races haven’t been taking place since the very first day that horses became domesticated. Like two young children with new bikes, wherever two horses were found in close proximity, the urge to test them against each other must be great. Whereas the first bike was produced in the 1860s, the oldest known man-made sculpture of a horse was produced roughly twenty-eight thousand years before the birth of Christ.

The history of racing in Scotland was set out in fascinating detail by J. FairfaxBlakeborough in his ‘Northern Turf History’, Volume IV, 1973, starting with the legend that Scotland’s fastest horses were descended from those that were rescued from the ship-wrecked Spanish Armada, off the coast of Galloway, in 1588. However, in the chapter on Kelso, he places the first record of a race at Caverton Edge in a period prior to 1734 – when Mr Justice’s grey mare, Miss Modesty, beat Sir William Maxwell’s Whitefoot and Lord Cranston’s Almanzor

In 1751 the Caledonian Hunt gave a plate worth 50 guineas to be run for at Caverton Edge and, from 1760 onwards, the races were established on a semi-regular basis By 1773, when Mr Weatherby published his first Racing Calendar, the only two Scottish meetings thought worthy of inclusion were at Edinburgh and Kelso where The Hon.

It’s probable that the horses were ridden by their owners or their owners’ grooms, there being no professional jockeys at this time. Both the riders and the grooms would have worn the owner’s livery and taken the horses to the races by road

frequently a journey of four to five days. The grooms would have slept alongside their horses in loose boxes at hotels along the way.

In 1821 Kelso Races moved from Caverton Edge to Blakelaw, about 3 miles south of Kelso But when the site at Blakelaw became overrun with travellers, the Duke’s tenants objected and the racecourse was moved to its current location on the Berrymoss – a freshly drained piece of ground which had been reclaimed from the marsh close by the northern edge of the town.

THE JOHN CARR GRANDSTAND

The Sporting Magazine of 1821 announced, “The Duke of Roxburghe has lately purchased the Berrymoss at Kelso for the purpose of forming it into a racecourse. His Grace means to erect an elegant stand upon the ground, with a tavern underneath, and in all respects to make the course and its accompaniments as complete as possible.”

The grandstand was built to a design, provided by the renowned Yorkshirebased architect John Carr forty-three years earlier in 1778 (John Carr died in 1807). Carr was one of the most competent and successful British architects working at the end of the 18th century. His designs for Kelso Races are comparable to his three earlier stands at Doncaster, Nottingham and York Races, none of which survive in anything close to their original form.

The foundation stone for the grandstand was laid on 12th July 1822. A contemporary writer described the new course (without consideration to the position of the border) as “One of the finest in England.” He continued: “It was made at vast expense in 1822 by James,

late Duke of Roxburghe. It is 1¼ miles round and 60ft in breadth. The horses are seen by every spectator from the moment of starting to that of reaching the winning post. On the West side of the course a very elegant stand of polished stone is erected. Beneath is an excellent dwelling for the person who keeps it, and above are two tiers of galleries surrounded by stone ballustrades and an elegant cast-iron railing, on which ladies and gentlemen station themselves, and watch the racing.

Sadly, the fifth Duke of Roxburghe did not live to see racing on the Berrymoss course but, as the first venue built specifically to stage horseracing in the country, he “had the pleasure of knowing it to be the first racecourse in Scotland.”

JUMP RACING

The first race meeting staged on the Berrymoss, on April 16th 1823, technically consisted of just one race staged in several heats. A Flat race for hunters, the final heat was won by Mr R Johnson’s Sir Thomas, ridden by Capt. Campbell, beating four others by half a head. Flat racing continued on the Berrymoss until 1888.

Jump racing was introduced in 1883, five years before the cessation of Flat racing, and required the enlargement of the circuit to include three additional fields which were procured from the neighbouring Hendersyde Park Estate. Until about 1925, one of the three fields was always left under plough – as was customary for steeplechase courses then, just as it is in the Velka Pardubicka today

The first two races staged over jumps at Kelso were won by C.J. Cunningham, a highly respected sporting figure of the day, who is commemorated through the naming of the Annual Members Bar

The obstacles in the back straight of the steeplechase course at Kelso were located, logically, at the boundary of each of the three new fields And although the fences have changed in shape, size and material over the years, it was only

during the most recent Summer that they were moved away from their original positions Of course, they’ll have moved a bit, give or take, but for more than a hundred years every horse participating in a race was obliged to pass between the wings of the obstacles; missing one would have resulted in disqualification. It made sense for jumps to be positioned at the narrowest points of any track which, at Kelso, meant placing them adjacent to the hedged boundaries of the old fields

Fast forward to the current millennium and runners are occasionally obliged to bypass fences if, for example, the obstacle is damaged during a race. This means that it is advantageous for the fences to be located at the widest part of the track, enabling the runners to pass to the left or the right The new position enables us to move them sideways too, providing fresh running lines to race on later in the season.

The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Challenge Cup

The KOSB Association are most grateful that our Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne , The Princess Royal has graciously agreed to present the KOSB Challenge Cup to the winning owner This magnificent Challenge Cup has been continuously raced for at Kelso Racecourse since 1972

The last winners of the Cup with a Regimental connection were Alan and Marty MacTaggart who owned and trained Running Moss in 2005. Alan served with the 1st Battalion KOSB in Berlin in 1960 and then with the 4th Battalion TA. He was not only a well-known amateur jockey but also a Steward at Kelso Last year the winning horse was Joke Dancer ridden by Ryan Mania who won the 2013 Grand National on Auroras Encore.

The King`s Own Scottish Borderers were raised in Edinburgh in 1689 and were a very proud Lowland Regiment for the next three hundred and seventeen years until they amalgamated with the Royal Scots in 2006.

Today the KOSB history and heritage lives on through their Museum at The Barracks, Berwick upon Tweed which they have been associated with since 1881. At present The Barracks are planning on a complete refurbishment which will include a new KOSB Museum which will open in 2026.

The KOSB Association wish all race goers an enjoyable day`s racing and in particular to both horses and Jockeys “Safe out , safe in.”

2022: NO CORRESPONDING RACE

Tongue Strap worn by No 9. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 2.

Stewards Note:

RAVENSCAR: Following its run on 24/3/2023 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

MELCHOIR: Following its run on 29/3/2023 it was reported that the horse was coughing post-race.

Probable S.P’s: 5-2 Animore (GB), 5-1 Atlantic Dancer (IRE), 11-2 Noble Affair (IRE), 13-2 Rae des Champs (IRE), 8-1 Lady Hamilton (IRE), 12-1 Ravenscar (IRE), 16-1 Melchoir (FR), 22-1 Bella Bluesky (GB), 66-1 Silver Vision (GB)

ANIMORE resumed winning ways in good style at Ayr and, still feasibly treated following a 7lb rise, she will take plenty of stopping. Next on the list is Atlantic Dancer, who arrives here on the back of a couple of solid efforts at Uttoxeter, while Rae des Champs will be a threat if she puts her best foot forward and Noble Affair also needs a second look

SHADES OF MIDNIGHT AWARD

The ‘Shades of Midnight’ Horse of the Year Award will be presented in May to the connections of the horse judged to have put up the most stirring performance (or performances) at Kelso during the 2022/23 season.

The bronze award, donated by the owners of ‘Shady’ (the winner of seven races including three at Kelso) will go to the owners of a horse that will be selected from a list of nominations made by racegoers. The lad or lass of the horse will also receive £200, which they may or may not choose to spend on polo mints.

If you have a favourite Kelso horse, it’s not too late to make a nomination of your own. Send them, before midnight on Sunday 30th April, to info@kelso-races.co.uk

BUCCLEUCH CUP

TheracewiththelongesthistoryinKelso’scalendar,The Buccleuch Cup was added to the programme in 1885 as a steeplechase for maiden hunters qualified with the Duke of Buccleuch’s hounds Additional local hunts were added to the qualification criteria in following years and the race continues to be targeted at local amateur horsemen. While representing the true grass roots of our sport, the Buccleuch Cup has produced some notable performances – not least when the race was won by Miss Winnifred Wallace’s Merryman, by 20 lengths, in 1958. Merryman went on to land both the Aintree Foxhunters’ Chase and the Scottish National the following year, before winning the first ever Grand National to be broadcast live on television in 1960. We are indebted to Weatherbys Hamilton for their support of the race in this Bicentenary season.

Berrymoss (5 years) becomes Reg and Betty Tweedie’s 100th winner in the Buccleuch Cup at Kelso

SAFETY INFORMATION

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.

Slips, Trips, Falls

We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient

Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day

Fences, Walls & Barriers

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment

Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight

Horses

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track

but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them

so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically

Fires

We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.

Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces

Children

We welcome many children to Kelso races Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult

who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
