Monday 2nd October
A warm welcome to Hamilton Park for our final evening fixture of the season, where we have some excellent racing ahead of us.
Our thanks go to this evening’s sponsors including the European Breeders Fund, Gartcraig Inn, Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park Hotel and PMA Recruitment Services & Azure Global, who are our newest sponsors having generously supported this evening’s racing. I hope all our sponsors and their guests have an enjoyable evening with us.
At 6.15pm we will be marking the first anniversary of the sad passing of Willie Paterson OBE. Willie was a huge supporter of Hamilton Park and a valued director and investor in our onsite hotel and so we are honoured to be able to run this race in his memory. Our thoughts are with Janice, Lorna, Tom, Lesley and the whole Paterson family at what we know is a very difficult time.
This evening’s feature race is the Gartcraig Inn Always A Warm Welcome 2-Year-Old Series Final at 5.45pm. This is a Class 2 contest over six furlongs with prize money of £20,000 on offer, with a competitive field of six runners set to go to post. Three of tonight’s horses have already won here in 2023, with Swordplay at the top of the weights for trainer Charlie Johnston and the Kingsley Park 33 syndicate, who won here back in June when beating another of tonight’s runners Chumbaa who picked up a course and distance win in August.
Kevin Ryan runs DC Flyer under Tom Eaves and will be looking to follow up having won on his last outing here in July, whilst Jim Goldie will be hoping to strike once more with Nana’s Ancestors for Hamilton Park’s reigning Champion Owner, Jimmy Long who I’m sure is hoping to retain his title this season.
As we near the end of our season we would love you to tell us when you have received excellent customer service over the past year The Racing Post Readers Award is now open and you could win a VIP raceday at a racecourse of your choice if you recount a great experience you have had. Entries can be made via the links on our social media pages or via @RCAShowcase on Twitter. Nominations are also open for the RCA/ROA Racehorse Owner’s Racecourse of the Year award which is voted for by Racehorse Owner’s based on their on-course experience The team have worked incredibly hard to upgrade the experience for visiting Owners and Trainers this year and so we would welcome the support of our guests this evening. Nominations can be made with Fiona at the Owners & Trainers reception or by scanning one of the QR codes displayed around the course
After this evening, we have a short break before our next fixture which is the Usave Utility Contracts
Raceday on Sunday 24 September, where we have a great afternoon of racing followed by a DJ set from Pat Sharp We then have the fantastic Maggie’s Goes Racing Family Raceday on September Holiday Monday 25 September before our season finale on Monday 2 October Be sure to take advantage of the best prices for tickets on our website at www.hamilton-park.co.uk, as we have some excellent discounts available when you book in advance
Have a wonderful evening and be lucky!

Andrew Breslin

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-yearolds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (25 wins from 207 runners, 12%) runs ELEGANT CALL
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Watson (6 wins from 49 runners, 12%) runs GLADLY EVER AFTER
Fancy That: K R Burke won this race in 2020 and 2022. The stable runs PRINCESS ALEX today.
Longest Traveller: GLADLY EVER AFTER trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, 367 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 11-4 Curious Rover (IRE), Gladly Ever After (IRE), 7-2 Princess Alex (GB), 11-2 Almarada Prince (IRE), 16-1 Circus Lion (GB), Elegant Call (IRE), 250-1 Haildor (GB), Shatin Venture (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: A tight novice featuring 4 previous winners. CURIOUS ROVER was well suited by the drop to 5f at Catterick last week and might be able to follow up turned out again quickly. Karl Burke has a good recent record in this race so Princess Alex could be the one to give Katie Scott’s charge most to do ahead of Gladly Ever After.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and four furlong. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular race is six furlongs.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
