Welcome to the first day of Ascot’s King George Weekend, a top-class two days of sport and spectacle with the feature race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, worth £1.5m for the first time.
Today, we are delighted to be hosting the winning breeders from Royal Ascot 2025 in the Ascot Authority room for a celebratory lunch. There were 29 individual winning sires across the 35 races at this year’s Royal Meeting. Coolmore’s impressive 2013 Royal Ascot winner No Nay Never led the way with four winners including Charles Darwin, who emulated his sire in taking the Norfolk Stakes. Some of the successful breeders will be presenting winning connections with their prizes for our fourth race, the Royal Ascot Winning Breeders’ Handicap Stakes
Our grateful thanks go once again to John Guest Racing who continue their long association with Ascot. Their sponsorship dates back nearly 30 years and the Guest family today sponsor the John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap which commemorates the legendary seven-time Royal Ascot winner who recorded six straight victories in the Queen Alexandra Stakes from 1929 to 1934.
Today’s feature race is the £50,000 Listed Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes, a race whose past list of winners includes Rosallion, Toronado and Raven’s Pass, who all went on to win at Group 1 level. Charlie Appleby has won four of the last six runnings and this year he will hope that Time To Turn can extend that remarkable record. We would like to thank Flexjet for their ongoing support of the race and also Chapel Down for their sponsorship today.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot tomorrow for the 75th running of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong Novice Stakes, restricted to two-year-old fillies which are E.B.F eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Each runner is allocated 9st 2lbs before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 2.25pm
The Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed Race)
This seven furlong contest for two-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern success
PAGES 26-27
3rd Race 3.00pm
The John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap Stakes
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 30-31
4th Race 3.35pm
The Royal Ascot Winning Breeders’ Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 34-36
5th Race 4.10pm
The Chapel Down Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 4.45pm
The Ascot Shop Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
The final race today is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-old and upward fillies which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

It’s probably worth trusting in the potential of the 3-y-o PINHOLE, who was never really in the hunt in the Queen’s Vase at the Royal Meeting here but, judged on his fourth in a Chester Group 3 won by none other than subsequent English/Irish Derby hero Lambourn during the spring. The Frankel colt could be on a good mark for this handicap debut. C&D winner Assail is feared most, but Dream Harder is also strongly respected with William Buick booked and Arqoob is hard to discount, too.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree
as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.
Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

FANTASY OBSESSOR can maintain an unbeaten start to her career, an opening mark of 79 looking potentially lenient for one whose pedigree suggests she should prove just as effective over the minimum trip. Cinque Verde arrives after a run of second-placed efforts and should be in the mix once again, whilst Emeralds Pride still looks on a competitive mark after her Beverley success and completes the shortlist.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
