RACE SUMMARY: INSTALLATION had excuses at Thirsk last time (got upset in stall) so is worth another chance to confirm York debut promise, a performance which is backed up by the timefigure. Colnago has a similar profile to the selection so is feared, while market support for newcomer Concert Boy would look significant.

Weightwatcher: PEARL OF QATAR won off a handicap mark of 77, her rating is now down 5lb to 72.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

The Gartcraig Inn have very generously sponsored this race and will present a memento to the winning owner. In addition, they will present a cash prize to the person in charge of the horse judged to be the best turned out.

Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 6lb

RACE STATISTICS

1 2 3: 1.CLAN JOCK (IRE) 2.SIMPLE STAR (IRE) 3.LOCHNAVER STEWARDS NOTE: CUBAN CIGAR: Following its run on 17/8/2022 it was reported that the horse clipped heels turning for home.RALPHY BOY TWO: Following its run on 26/8/2022 it was reported that the horse was slowly away LUCKY DRAW: Following its run on 25/8/2022 it was reported that the horse ran too freely

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE SUMMARY: CLAN JOCK has enjoyed an excellent spell since rejoining Jim Goldie and looks good for another win here. Simple Star didn’t pull up any trees on the Flat at the start of the summer but his handicap mark has come down as a result and a couple of recent runner-up efforts over hurdles suggest he’s back in better form. The selection’s stablemate Lochnaver may prove best of the rest.

This is a one mile and three furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 51 to 70.

RACE SUMMARY: A LA FRANCAISE ran well in a 0-90 at Southwell 10 days ago, so she’s very much of interest now dropping markedly in grade Super Stars is sure to be thereabouts if backing up his recent Brighton third, while Sylvia Beach made a sound start for hew new yard at Leicester last month and also enters the reckoning. 1-2-3: 1.A LA FRANCAISE 2.SUPER STARS (IRE) 3.SYLVIA BEACH
