A very warm welcome to our racing plus music event today, featuring Olly Murs this evening.
We are delighted to see so many of you here today, and if this is your first time at Cartmel, I do hope we may see you again in the future.
We are lucky to have so many sponsors supporting us today: their contribution to racing is truly appreciated. I must therefore offer our sincere thanks to:
Hadwins
Lakeland Verandahs
Krol Corlett
William Hill
Lakes Luxury Loos
Our Charity today is Warrior Down, an organisation offering support, harnessing the strength of lived experience to promote healing, resilience and recovery by fostering compassionate communities I would urge you to visit their stand in the Paddock to learn more about their organisation
The Summer Jumps Championship is taking shape and, at the time of writing, the leader board looked like this:
Leading Jockey – Sean Bowen
Leading Trainer – James Owen
Leading Small Trainer – Sam England
Leading Owner – All Work No Play Syndicate
Our local Cartmel Champions leaders are currently Sean Bowen and Ben Haslam. However, I am sure it is all still to play for this season.
I do hope you enjoy both the racing and the concert today – thank you for joining us, your support contributes significantly to the economy of the local community, from the hotels, restaurants and bars to the local employment here at the track.
May I wish you good luck

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE
In third is our 2024 Jockey Challenge winner Sean Quinlan He gave Evenwood Sonofagun a fantastic ride getting up close home in the Traffic Management Handicap Hurdle
There was little movement at the top the leaderboard for the Cartmel Jockeys after the third of our 9 days of racing.
Champion Jockey Sean Bowen is still at the top despite a rare visit without a winner His two second places ensure that the points tally is ticking over, highlighting that being in the frame adds plenty to the scores Similarly, Brian Hughes has yet to have a winner at Cartmel this season but a number of placed finishes sees the 3 time Champion Jockey in second place.
The top points scorer on the night was James Bowen. He was successful on his only rides on Shantwopointfive in the 1st division of the Traffic Management Handicap, and Shillanvogy in the Womens Community Matters Handicap Both were for the same Trainer/Owner combination with joyous scenes in the Winners Enclosure
A special mention must go the Harry O’Dwyer who was successful on Autonmous Cloud in the concluding NPG Fire and Safety Hunters Chase This was Harry’s first visit to Cartmel and a winning one. Congratulations go to Harry.

TRAINER PTS
CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE
The Training performance of the night came from Warren Greatrex He had 3 runners and came away with 2 winners and a second The fist success was a very comfortable success for Shantwopointfive in the 1st division of the Traffic Management Handicap followed by Shilanavogy in the Womens Community Matters Handicap The runners were looked after by Assistant Trainer Olly Kozak and with 3 horses owned by the same group, we are sure to see them all back soon.
Warren has rocketed into joint second place in the standings behind our reigning Trainer Challenge holder Ben Haslam As in the previous 2 days racing, Ben had one winner for owner JP McManus. The tough Coqolino made it 2 wins in 4 days when easily landing the Go Green Solar Novices Chase Despite carrying a penalty the gelding beat some in form horses and further successes through the Summer are likely to follow
Brian Ellison had only 2 runners and they finished in first and second places. The Hales of Cartmel Novices Hurdle was won by Terrorise under a power-packed ride from Craig Nichol, getting up the last few strides. Brian’s runners are worth looking out for with a fine record here.
Another trainer in form is Cumbrian Lizzie Quinlan Evenwood Sonofagun followed up his win here just 2 days later with another success at the course Who is to say that Lizzie won’t equal or even better last year’s 4 successes from City Derby with this popular winner?
Ben Haslam
Warren Greatrex
HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

REEL HER IN is yet to better modest form over hurdles but hasn’t had too many tries in handicaps and makes appeal returning to this code based on her recent Flat win. All Under Control and Killybegs Jet Lady both arrive in good nick, and they head up the opposition.
Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 107 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5)
for five yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £6950
Race Description This is a two miles, five furlongs and 34 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

KENDAL, CUMBRIA
We are remembering John Wade today with our final race named in his memory.
John was a stalwart of Northern Jumps racing and sadly passed away last October
His maroon and white colours were a familiar site on most racecourses, enjoying many successes at Cartmel over the decades. His last winner here was Imperial Data in May last year, but Boomslang won our opening race on this card in 2024 in the colours of his lifelong friend Maria D Myco. Both these horses were trained by Rebecca Menzies from the yard where John had a successful Training career himself, sending out over 200 winners.
John was well liked and respected by all who met him. Whether it was on the racecourse or in his successful Haulage business John was a hugely popular figure.
He also raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Air Ambulance, Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare through staging point to points and pony racing days.
Johns last runner as a Trainer was actually at Cartmel in 2016 and was a winner It is only right that we honour and remember one the greats of our sport.
Imperial Data claimed a final Cartmel victory for John Wade in May 2024.

Race Description This two miles, one furlong and 46 yards handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

GREENROCK ABBEY is due to race off a 10lb higher mark in future and he can follow up his recent Market Rasen chase success back over hurdles Saligo Bay is well handicapped returning to this sharper test and has been in fine form on the Flat, he’s feared most ahead of Book of Secrets who ran well over this C&D in a higher grade last season and having shaped encouragingly on reappearance earlier this month, looks interesting with a hood now refitted.
