Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.
Today, we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.
Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.
I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.
Malih L
Al Basti Owner & Founder
A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for a brand new raceday, one that features the first York running of the Group 3 £100,000 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Criterion Stakes. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day of cheering horses and hearts skippin’ a beat.
The entire race programme worth nearly £300,000 is backed by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, so we send our special thanks to Mr Malih Al Basti and his team for their fabulous support for York and racing.
The feature contest is over the specialist distance of 1,400 metres or seven furlongs and it has attracted a classy field that includes an Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack winner in Lake Forest who then went Down Under to win the Aus$10m Golden Eagle in Sydney last November The locally trained Paborus is hoping for a third consecutive win having been recently acquired by the Wathnan Racing operation, remarkably the Bethell family trained the inaugural winner of the race in 1978, as Ed’s father James trained Daring March to bring the Newmarket trophy back to Middleham. If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 27, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post.
The team have been busy preparing for today, please try the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development (see p32), enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish ‘n’ Chips. Newly opening today is the Prosecco bar featuring the Kylie Minogue range of wines. As we hope for the weather to enjoy it, the County Stand Garden will be open, offering a different perspective as you look back towards the grandstands and runners.
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is with us; do go and say hello to him and our partner team from New Beginnings.
Please do enjoy the music but please do not be “troublemakers” with our neighbours as you leave the racecourse and head towards our home city
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day and may even choose to return for more of the same from Ronan Keating on Saturday 26 July.
William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands, as well as for the Music Stage - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Underway with handicap conditions. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past performances will be the highest rated horse, being Cadarn here and so will carry most weight.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, notice how Theme Park is one that carries both consonants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Now that the penny has dropped for ARCHIVIST after an easy success at Leicester, the son of Dubawi is likely to have plenty more improvement forthcoming and a mark of 90 on his handicap bow looks manageable Cadarn continues to go from strength to strength after a pair of Redcar victories, while Madame De Sevigne may be suited by dropping back slightly in trip having been narrowly denied at Nottingham. Barley and Capital Guarantee are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

A NEW HOME FOR AN HISTORIC CONTEST: THE CRITERION STAKES
It was in 1978 that Daring March, trained here in Yorkshire by James Bethell headed South to the July Course at Newmarket then came home as the first winner of the Criterion Stakes. Family history could repeat itself as Ed Bethell is represented today by Paborus. It was a 7-furlong race created, then as now, for a new meeting. Initially it was a Listed Race being upgraded to its current Group 3 status in 1986.
Now, after nearly half a century the race arrives here, as our centrepiece today. If forms part of a significantly upgraded 7-furlong programme on the Knavesmire - the highlight of which will be the first running as a Group One of the Sky Bet City of York Stakes, set for the final day of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (23 August). The winner this afternoon earn “run for free” status to that race
A feature of the Criterion Stakes through the years has been very much quality rather than quantity Turn the clock back to the late 1980’s and the Roll of Honour in back-to-back years were the three-year-olds Cadeaux Genereux and Zilzal, who were later to claim three Group One titles between them in the form of a July Cup and both the Sussex Stakes and then the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
In more recent times the Richard Hannon senior trained Libranno won consecutive renewals as did Limato in 2019 and 2020- that first win at the age of seven coming after he had won the Starman Garrowby Stakes here at York.
In 2023 Audience in the Cheveley Park colours gave John Gosden a fifth win in the race and a year ago Charlie Appleby and William Buick got in on the act courtesy of Noble Dynasty
Full disclosure, an original running of a race named after Criterion began in the 19th century and most famously in 1903 a filly called Pretty Polly won as she completed nine wins from nine starts as a juvenile and then went on to win the Fillies Triple Crown.
So, today we write a new chapter in the history of the Criterion Stakes, sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. Here’s hoping it is a vintage one

The latest addition to the Pattern schedule at York, think of these top-quality races in football divisions starting from Group 1. This Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£100,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type” in their pedigree
Allowances (reductions in weight) are given to younger and female contenders, so Formal gets double benefit. At the other end, a horse that has already won in this elevated company carries a penalty weight, hence Prague having more than the rest.
Keep an eye out for the horses running well in this race as they might be back at the Knavesmire on August 23rd to try their luck in our recently upgraded Group 1 City Of York Stakes

\S A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
BUSTARDTHORPE END
SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT
Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.
HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?
AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI DASH STAKES
This afternoon’s Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a competitive field of 9 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.
Narrowing down the field of 9 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Democracy Dilemma - rated 102 - is considered 1lb “better” than Jm Jungle who is rated 101. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Democracy Dilemma should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 9 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?
Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find! Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form, so look out for those with lower form figures. In particular, last time out winners are ones to focus on so the hat-trick seeking Regal Envoy and Habooba are of keen interest, while Seven Questions and King Of Stars will need to improve on their recent efforts.
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand in bigger fields, but this can still apply to this Dash. The likes of Jm Jungle and Venture Capital can use this to their advantage.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this minimum trip where speed is necessary. All of today’s runners have shown they have what it takes over the five furlongs trip, so it could also play to look for form over slightly further as well. Look out for three time 6f scorer Regal Envoy who looks the most versatile in trip.
4) GROUND
The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Democracy Dilemma has done most of his winning in testing conditions, whilst many of Azure Angel’s success have been on the artificial surfaces. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. Habooba won over course and distance in May and returns 6lb higher than his last winning mark, while Jm Jungle won a Heritage Handicap at August over 6f last August.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Jm Jungle appeals most, having won at Epsom last time out and is nicely drawn in stall 4. Course and distance winner Habooba had the selection behind over last time out but now must meet his rival on worse terms. They both enter calculations with that valuable track experience. The hat-trick seeking Regal Envoy also enters the mix in what looks a highly competitive affair.

This one has the added variable that over just five furlongs it means little things can have a big impact. Seven Questions is deemed worthy of top weight by the handicapper. If you’re reading this in time, try the Punters Panel at 1.15pm for some advice.

The rapidly-improving HABOOBA had two subsequent winners behind her, including Jm Jungle (third), when scoring comfortably over C&D last month. A 6lb rise could prove lenient and it may be Regal Envoy who gives her the most to think about, having won three of his last four starts at Newmarket and Windsor (twice). Azure Angel returned to winning ways at Redcar and is another to consider, along with Doncaster second Squealer, who may be suited by the set-up of this race

KNAVESMIRE TIP
There was little to separate COMMANDING OFFICER (third) and Brotherhood Of Man (fourth) when the pair met on debut at Haydock. Charlie Appleby’s colt wasn’t experienced enough to do himself justice and he could fare much better with that under his belt. Karl Burke has his string in fine fettle so newcomer Hankelow, who fetched 750,000gns as a yearling, must be respected. It will be interesting to see if Crest of Fire’s supporters return, having been well backed ahead of his debut when fifth behind subsequent Chesham hero Humidity at Newbury

TURQUINO was able to put a lacklustre Ascot performance behind him to finish a creditable fifth at Kempton. The son of Teofilo looked outpaced on that occasion so stepping up in trip could elicit the necessary improvement. Heathen is likely to prove popular having struck the woodwork over 1m4f here a fortnight ago, while handicap debutant Gravitas, who has William Buick aboard for the first time, is another to consider

Station X made an encouraging reappearance when narrowly beaten at Hamilton. However, he tends to produce his best with some cut in the ground and TOPWARRIOR may edge affairs. Ralph Beckett’s colt found one too good over the minimum trip at Musselburgh on his handicap bow but, having won a novice event over 6f at Kempton back in April, he gets another chance. Lord Roxby arrives in fine fettle and is not out of it either

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 2f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
To finish off, a final handicap race. It is often termed “the get out stakes” and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over, it is also over one and a quarter miles. However, the twist is that all the riders are amateur in status (see how we call them Mr /Mrs) Connections can choose to back experience such as William Easterby riding Financier for his father, Tim; or, to reduce the weight by using a jockey yet to win as many races, step forward younger brother Thomas, who partners Leadenhall and gets 5lb off. For sake of family completeness, sister Emily rides Poet’s Dawn

KNAVESMIRE TIP
WESTERNESSE carried top weight to victory at Ripon last week. The son of Camelot scored with plenty left in the tank so a 4lb rise may not be enough to prevent another bold bid, and Simon Walker’s presence in the saddle is a positive. Whathappensinvegas returns to this shorter trip with a shout off his current mark, while Leadenhall went close here a fortnight ago and is preferred to stablemate Financer
