Good afternoon and welcome to Goodwood. Today, we look forward to seven competitive races and the chance to see some young horses beginning their careers, with a Novice, Maiden and a Nursery stakes. This fixture can often provide a useful insight into the future, but it is also one at which we celebrate the past.

Midweek Racing

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse 1

This afternoon we commemorate our history with the running of the two-mile Royal Sussex Regiment Handicap, where we are delighted to welcome members of the Regiment to the Racecourse today. The very first horserace at Goodwood was staged in 1800 for the officers of the Sussex Militia, of which the 3rd Duke of Richmond was Colonel. His nephew, the 4th Duke of Richmond became Colonel of the Regiment in 1803 and was responsible for having ‘Sussex’ added to the Regiment’s name. Our third race is The Peter Willet Memorial British EBF Future Stayers’ Maiden Stakes and celebrates the life of Peter Willet, a great friend of my family and a long-serving member of the Goodwood board. Peter was a driving force behind the modern flat racing pattern and was instrumental in shaping the programme around which Britain’s most prestigious races are built; his influence continues to this day. We are most grateful to William Hill, the British European Breeders Fund, and the family of Peter Willett for their generous sponsorship of today’s racing. I hope you have a very enjoyable time here at the Racecourse and I look forward to welcoming you back for racing at our next Midweek Racing fixture on Wednesday 21st September

MUJID could not have been more impressive when demolishing his rivals at Ffos Las last month and an 8lb rise could prove lenient. Joe Tickle’s charge had been knocking on the door prior to that display and he is preferred to the hat-trick seeking Largo Bay, who has been doing his winning at Brighton. Hooves Like Jagger has only a length to find with the aforementioned gelding and he is likely to enter the reckoning along with Bug Boy and Fascinating Lips. Win: MUJID Danger: Largo Bay

Win: BAND OF STEEL Danger: Going To The Moon In 1830 when George IV thought he was on his deathbed such was his anxiety to find out the Goodwood results that he stationed a relay of post boys between Windsor and the racecourse to convey the results as they came through.

Race Summary BAND OF STEEL filled the runner-up spot on his racecourse bow at Chelmsford last month and the son of Golden Horn wouldn’t need to improve much from that effort to go one better on this occasion. Going To The Moon finished second at Nottingham on debut and he commands plenty of respect with that experience under his belt. Edge Of Darkness, who was fourth at Ripon, and High Honour are others capable of stepping forward.

Visitors to the racecourse at Goodwood may notice a plaque mounted on the side of the grandstand facing the paddock. It commemorates the close association between Goodwood races and The Royal Sussex Regiment which stretches back in time to the inauguration of the races over 200 years ago. The origins of Goodwood races lie in the invitation by Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke, to fellow officers of The Royal Sussex Light Infantry Militia, to hold an annual race meeting in the spring of 1800 on the Harroways, a site upon which the present Racecourse building now stands. Such was its success that a proper course was laid out and a two day private meeting organised the following May. A small wooden stand was constructed to accommodate the more distinguished guests and in April 1802 the first three-day meeting was held. A long standing link between the races and the Regiment was the novel method of starting each race. In the absence of a conventional saddling bell, the Militia employed a bugler to denote a start. Initially he sounded the "cavalry trot", later a single note and the sight of the bugler in his position at the top of the grandstand was familiar to racegoers until recent times when his role was superseded by the introduction of commentary over a public address system.

The link with the Regiment was enhanced in July 1965 when the Regimental Association presented a challenge bowl for a race to be known as The Royal Sussex Regiment Stakes. Today’s race perpetuates the name of the Regiment and its close association with Goodwood.

Although Goodwood lost its private characteristic, the connection with the county regiment was to remain, and in May 1892 officers of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment successfully revived a Regimental Race meeting at Goodwood.

In 1906 the Regiment was given a site on the lawns upon which officers and their guests could meet on race days, lunching in a tent under the beech trees. The tent was replaced by a chalet in the 1960s and the Lunch Club continued until 1987.

RACE LAST YEAR STEWARDS NOTED: FARIBA:Following its run on 8/8/2022 it was reported that the horse took a check in running.

Foaled 31 Jan. A winner at 7f on the all-weather Beaten a neck by Lady Lavina when second of five at 9-4 on her latest outing at Kempton over 7f last month. Cannot be totally ruled out for a trainer that has a decent record at this track.

Race Summary It was difficult not to be impressed by the way SIRONA went about her business on her debut at Beverley last week and, despite showing signs of greenness, there should be plenty more to come from the daughter of Soldier Hollow. Ipanema Princess has been plying her trade in France of late and this represents a drop in grade at a track that should suit, having won at Epsom in July Candle Of Hope remains a filly of potential, with the daughter of Cable Bay also being eased in class.

The Charlie Hills-trained MAGHLAAK gets the vote having caught the eye on his most recent run at Kempton last month. His pedigree very much gives the impression there is more to come and he remains the one to beat stepping up in distance. Jean Danjou makes plenty of appeal on paper, while Eljenob has shown plenty of promise since stepping up in trip and is another to note for a stable currently in excellent form. MAGHLAAK Jean Danjou great british
