It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup & Concert.
This race meeting has always been unique and this year we welcome top riders who, for the first time, include the newly created Asia team. They join international jockeys representing Great Britain & Ireland, Europe and Rest of the World in what promises to be another exciting and highly-competitive battle to lift the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Trophy.
The individual rider amassing the most points for their team will be awarded the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle and we will also be celebrating the single most outstanding performance across all six races with the presentation of the Dubai Duty Free Ride of the Day.
A great deal has happened since we were last at Ascot, Dubai Duty Free celebrated its 41st Anniversary on 20th December 2024 and ended the year with record sales of US$2.164 billion. Building on that momentum, we continued to see strong growth in the first half of 2025, achieving a new half-year sales record of US$1.128 billion.
Dubai Duty Free has continued to promote Dubai as a leading business and leisure destination through its sponsorship of major sporting events. In addition to today’s event, our calendar includes the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships — a world-class tournament that is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free. The tournament consistently draws the world's top WTA and ATP players. This year’s tournament, which generated an impressive US$579 million in global television coverage, saw Mirra Andreeva and Stefanos Tsitsipas secure their maiden Dubai titles.
I wish you an enjoyable day of racing and a fantastic evening of entertainment.

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (Handicap)
Today’s opener is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100
PAGES 42-44
2nd Race 2.10pm
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap)
This is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 52-54
3rd Race 2.45pm
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap)
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 58-60
4th Race 3.20pm
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap)
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 81 to 100 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95
PAGES 64-66
5th Race 3.55pm
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic (Handicap)
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 70-72
6th Race 4.30pm
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap)
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)
22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree
as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.
Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing disappearance as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his recordbreaking victory in the 1981 Derby and imperious triumph in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month.
Infamously kidnapped following his retirement to stud in Ireland, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty Timeform rating of 140.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Futurity Trophy.
Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap (now World Thoroughbred Rankings), Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial which was followed by a 12-length demolition of the field in the Chester Vase.
Shergar lined up at Epsom as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from his rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the race.
With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to The Curragh and added the Irish Derby, before routing his elders in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth.
That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million (a huge amount then so one can only begin to imagine what his modern day value would have been), the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland, but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion.
A £2 million ransom was demanded and refused.
Shergar’s fate remains a mystery, but he is remembered in many ways around the world, including today at Ascot, with the world’s premier jockeys’ competition honouring the greatest racehorse of the 1980s.
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition where four teams, Asia, Europe, Great Britain and Ireland and the Rest of the World battle it out to win the coveted Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
The six races offer free entry and are limited to 10 runners, with either two or three horses racing for each team. Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides across the afternoon.
Points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve (two for each race) 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams.
The team with the highest total after race six lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup while the jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the Alistair Haggis “Silver Saddle” Trophy.
One jockey will receive the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award.
If there is a tie for the team or Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places and then if necessary fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners.
Ascot Racecourse will distribute £25,000 in stable bonuses to the leading yards on the day, split between the trainer and staff. This will be awarded to the top three yards based on points accumulated in the competition with £12,500 for first place, £7,500 to the second and £5,000 to the third.
For each race there will also be £200 to the best turned out and £200 to the staff member responsible for the winning horse with £100 to staff members responsible for 2nd to 5th placed horses.
This is the 24th running of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot, having first been staged here in 2000. Ascot wish to thank Dubai Duty Free for their continued support.

Everyone at Ascot Racecourse would like to pay tribute to Colm McLoughlin, the former executive vice chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, who sadly passed away in October last year at the age of 81. Colm was instrumental in not only launching Dubai Duty Free but also transforming the business into the giant of travel retail that it is today, staying at the helm from its inception in 1983 until his retirement in May last year Colm was also integral to Dubai Duty Free’s ongoing support of this event, having maintained a relationship with the Shergar Cup since the very first edition and sponsoring the whole event since 2014 Put simply the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup would not be what it is today without Colm McLoughlin’s passion, vision and expertise.

BY CLOSE FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE, MIKE VINCE
If I came down from the commentary gantry at the end of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and wanted to speak to Alistair, I knew exactly where to look - he’d be watching the Closing Ceremony in the quietest corner he could find, well away from the spotlight. That was Alistair. A man who would, and often did work morning, noon and night to make sure a project was successful, and then be positively the last person to step forward and accept the acclaim that was rightly due.
Alistair loved racing, loved racing people and loved Ascot Racecourse. He had some of the finest PR skills I have ever come across in anyone I have dealt with in any sport, and his tireless work with his colleagues at the International Racing Bureau with trainers and jockeys is quite simply a cornerstone of why the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become what it is today.
It became tradition for there to be a production meeting in the days ahead of the Shergar Cup, in “Studio 6” we used to call it (though in reality a local restaurant), where we would talk through plans for the day. The rest of us would then head home but for Alistair it was straight back to work. I still have some of the 3am emails he sent with answers to any issues.
When the QIPCO British Champion Series started it came as no surprise to hear Alistair was on the team as PR Manager. Rod Street, the CEO of that organisation, knew his work was peerless and that he held the respect of the media.
Quite simply the hand of Haggis was always the seal of success.
Devoted to his beloved Arsenal, Ali thrilled us all when marriage to Nim led to the arrival of son Alfie, on whom he doted. That such happiness should have been followed after such a short time by the cruelty of his illness and inevitable passing from Motor Neurone Disease in 2014 has been hard for his friends and family to bear.
Being able to say you were a friend of Alistair Haggis will always be something to cherish, and I’ll admit before the day comes to a close again this year, my eyes will go skywards.
It was an appropriate gesture by Ascot and Dubai Duty Free in 2015 to have the Silver Saddle named in Alistair’s honour, and it is wonderful that some of his family members will be present here today.
BEYOND Developments is honoured to be the Official Real Estate Partner of Ascot and Royal Ascot. Roger Varian has saddled the winner of this race a couple of times in recent years and PROTEST is an appealing candidate for the yard this time round. She improved when landing a Glorious Goodwood handicap recently, demonstrating a good attitude in the process, and she may well have more to offer. The obvious caveat is that if Shuwari is able to reproduce something akin to her smart 2-y-o form she will prove very hard to beat, while Arolla, Never Let Go and Suite Francaise all have claims.

MIDNIGHT TANGO very much caught the eye when a fast-finishing second in a 6f course Listed event in June Her subsequent fourth in the Princess Margaret at Ascot was no bad run and she gets the vote now stepping up to 7f with Oisin Murphy taking the reins for the first time.
The Johnston stable has a good recent record in this race and Venetian Lace could be a big threat if keeping straighter than she did in the Superlative over C&D at the July meeting. Dance To The Stars is next on the list.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY
TENABILITY appears to be on a sharp upward curve judged on his clear-cut C&D handicap debut success a fortnight ago and, with the promise of better to come, he is taken to complete the hat-trick. Having completed a hat-trick of his own at Thirsk last time, Topteam is not passed over lightly given that he also remains with potential. Midawi is another with his best days presumably ahead of him and Canvas, though more exposed than the aforementioned trio, is likely to be on the premises, too.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £560,463 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd June to 14th September 2025.
