Ladies Day celebrates the end of our 2023/24 racing season and is our most glamorous event of the year Since 2017, this prestigious date in the calendar has been sponsored by Jarrolds and sadly this will be their last year, so we wanted to say a massive thank you for all the support they have given the Racecourse.
Ladies Day would not be the same without a best dressed competition, and we are pleased that KL Magazine has taken on the organisation and judging of this event. Watch out for the KL teams who will be walking around spotting the potential Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Couple and Best Hat; to be judged between races on the KL Lawn. There are some wonderful prizes on offer including nights away, dinner and exclusive vouchers. We received some great news in May from Buckingham Palace. They advised us that after a full review of Royal Patronages, His Majesty The King was delighted to retain the Patronage of Fakenham Racecourse. We have had Royal Patronage continuously, starting with his Great Grandfather King Edward VII, and are thrilled this will continue.
Some more exciting news we only heard yesterday, was that we will have New Year’s Day racing back at Fakenham 2025. It is quite a complicated process to secure some race dates and being a small independent racecourse, we can’t always compete financially if we have to go head-to-head with a larger course. We are therefore delighted we have yet again secured such an important date in Fakenham’s 2025 fixture list.
We have a couple of non-racing events planned over the coming months which are available to book online. A 90’s Disco Night is being held in the Adrian Flux Bar on Saturday 27 July with tickets at £18.50 per person, and we have Christmas Party Nights available on Saturday 30 November and Friday 6 December For more information and booking, visit our website – www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk.
Don’t forget, all our facilities are available to hire every day, other than our race days, and our caravan and camp site is open 365 days a year If you would like to find out more or discuss your specific requirements contact 01328 862388 or email info@fakenhamracecourse.co.uk.
Have a wonderful day and we hope to see you at our next race day on Friday 18 October, if not before.
Best Wishes,

BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
Our Tuesday May 7th meeting saw six races take place, with horses and riders battling it out to bring us exciting performances and thrilling finishes across our hurdle and chase courses.
Our first race of the day was a two mile selling handicap hurdle which saw an ebullient Ciaran O’Shea pilot King Otis to victory for his first ever win as a professional jockey. The James Owentrained eight year old made his start as favourite and ran much of the race in midfield, slowly making headway until a mistake by then-leader Nevendon at the last gave King Otis the opportunity to get ahead at the final turn and push onwards to the line. He took the win by 21/4 lengths over Nevendon, who did well to recover from his mistake under Nick Scolfield. Tara Iti followed up in hot pursuit and L’Impertinent closed out the first pack of finishers 41/2 lengths off the leader, with the rest of the field running out of steam and finishing some 15 to 33 lengths back.
Our second race was a mares’ Maiden Hurdle across two miles and four furlongs. This was a tiring race with both Freestyle and Mountain Lake pulling up, and La Gomera’s fall at the 7th hurdle hampering the third to fifth place finishers. Nethertheless,
the six-year old Seeyouinmydreams took a keen hold and went clear early, showing a different class to the rest of the field. After being shaken up by Harry Cobden from two out she readily justified her position as favourite by cruising to a storming 25-length victory. This is the only 2024 start so far for the lightly raced Paul Nicholls-trained mare; after a couple of below-par finishes in 2023, recent wind surgery has clearly helped spark a return to her best.
Race three was the Greene King Handicap Chase for five year olds and upwards rated from 0-100. Sixteen fences tested the six-strong field over two miles and five furlongs. Noah’s Light and Kankin took a tow from weakening favourite School for Scandal before surpassing him and fighting nose to nose towards the line. Kankin won by a neck over his younger rival, with Neil King-trained Go Fox the third place finisher eight lengths back.
The Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden duo took victory once again with J P McManus’ Soir De Gala in the fourth race. This five-year-old Joshua Tree gelding has had a positive start to his 2024 campaign of seven starts, with steadily improving form and added another nice notch in his belt here. He overcame an occasionally inelegant jumping style to see off a challenge from Gary & Josh Moore’s Jolyjump from three out which gave a Frenchbred one-two over Irish-born rivals Mountain Bay and Tip Top Tonto. Tip Top Tonto found himself hampered by the fallen Swearer three fences out and was unable to follow up on his April 12th victory.
Trincomalee showed guts and honesty to win the gruelling three mile, five furlongs Gamble Plant Norfolk National Handicap Chase under a jockey with a dropped whip. Dylan Whelan placed trust in his mount after dropping the whip at the turn before the last fence, riding gamely to keep on
top of the rest of the field with heel and hands encouragement alone. The pair recovered from a mistake at the last to pull away to a five-length lead at the pole and bring success home to trainer Lucy Wadham and connections. The favourite, Christian Williams-trained Planned Paradise, followed up next under Harry Cobden, while Oliver Signy’s Jigginstown King holding on to third under Sean Quinlan.
Our finale was a Maiden Hunters’ Chase for the Turner Trophy, contested by Trevada, Precious Bounty and Court Cian. Miss Ellie Callwood and Precious Bounty pressed on for the lead but were let down by some faltering jumping, allowing Mr Zac Baker to push his mount Trevada on to a 50-length winning margin. Court Cian trailed the pair around the three mile course, however his race unfortunately ended at the twelfth fence with a fall unseating rider Mr Charlie Case. PLAY SMARTER
James Owen’s CANNON ROCK has some useful winning Flat form to his name and comes here on the back of a good recent AW second at Kempton so is fancied to make a successful start now hurdling for his in-form yard. Pleasant Man is the form pick of those with experience and rates much the biggest threat, with Bristol Hill, Dirty Den and Natchez Trace all in the mix for minor honours.

KING OTIS is on the up for James Owen and, having finished a clear second at Huntingdon on Monday, he’s capable of getting back to winning ways if the race doesn’t come too soon.
