CHAIR’S WELCOME
WELCOME TO DAY THREE OF THE 2024 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL - CHESTER CUP DAY
Welcome to the third and final day of our prestigious Boodles May Festival, Chester Cup Day! You join us for an historic occasion on the Roodee, as we celebrate 200 years of the Chester Cup.
We have eight thrilling races on the card for Chester Cup Day and are honoured to have The Duke of Westminster supporting the Chester Cup and the Chester Plate, at 3.40pm and 4.15pm respectively The prize fund for the Chester Cup in its 200th year stands at a record £170,000 and is our most valuable race run here on the Roodee.
We also run the Ire-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Huxley Stakes today prior to the Chester Cup at 3.05pm.
As ever, our thanks go to our long-standing title sponsor of the May Festival, Boodles, who have now been proudly associated with our three-day meeting for 11 years. They continue to be fantastic supporters of both racing at Chester and our sport in general.
I would also like to extend my thanks to our other sponsors associated with today’s card of racing - CAA Stellar, the TOTE, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and HorsePWR, the new British racing campaign designed to share and promote facts around horse welfare. We are very grateful for your support.
The full race card gets underway from 1.30pm, when runners and riders take to the track for the CAA Stellar Earl Grosvenor Handicap Stakes and closes with The HorsePWR Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Div II) at 5.23pm.
Away from the track, make sure you take up the opportunity to have your photo taken with the Chester Cup in the Paddock area between 11.30am and 2pm. We also have a fantastic competition running with our partners Destination2, who are offering you the chance to win a luxury, five-night Dubai holiday for two!
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful day with us here at Chester Racecourse and get involved in all the fanfare around the 200-year anniversary of the Chester Cup. We next race here on Saturday 25th May, as our much-loved Roman Day fixture, in partnership with Via Roma, returns to the Roodee. It promises great racing and a host of fun activities for all the family to get involved in. We hope to see you then.
Ian O’Doherty ChairPLACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH AND RACECOURSE BOOKMANERS
HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post.
Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• 4 or fewer runners - win only
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.
The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake.
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

The hat-trick seeking Liamarty Dreams (fifth) commands respect from a handy draw but looks a shade vulnerable off his highest mark yet, so may be worth taking on. Both Master Zoffany (winner) and PERCY’S LAD (second) had wide berths when they finished ahead of Liamarty Dreams over this C&D last September and the latter looks worth chancing after an encouraging second at this level on his seasonal debut at Newmarket.
WIN: PERCY’S LAD
DANGER: LIAMARTY DREAMS
Unraced as a juvenile, Ballydoyle representative EPHESUS wasn’t far behind a better fancied stablemate on his debut over an extended 1m2f at Dundalk last month and, given he was doing his best work at the finish, there is good reason to expect the son of Galileo to improve for this sterner test of stamina. Mr Hampstead rates the chief threat, with Mina Rashid considered the pick of the rest.
WIN: EPHESUS
DANGER: MR HAMPSTEAD
BOLSTER impressed when he made a winning return at Pontefract last month and a 5lb higher mark might not be enough to prevent him following up on just his second start for Karl Burke. This is a deeper race, though, and several others have chances. Killybegs Warrior had the selection back in 10th when he won at Newmarket last July and is expected to go well, while City Streak and Box To Box can also make this tough for the selection.
WIN: BOLSTER
DANGER: KILLYBEGS WARRIOR
Hans Andersen was on target over 1m4f at Dundalk last month and he must be respected for a trainer who has won two of the previous three renewals, but it is ISRAR who shades preference. The son of Muhaarar travelled smoothly into contention in the Gordon Richards at Sandown a fortnight ago before fading into third late on, but perhaps he will be able to sustain that finishing effort now back on a sounder surface. Passenger must also feature prominently in calculations.
WIN: ISRAR
5
DANGER: HANS ANDERSEN
A typically wide-open renewal and just a tentative vote can go to TOO FRIENDLY. James Owen’s gelding, a five-time winner over hurdles, won over 2m at Kempton in March and has few miles on the clock in this sphere, so a 4lb raised mark could underestimate the son of Camelot. Magellan Strait (winner) and Falcon Eight (second), who landed this in 2021, are closely matched on their meeting in last year’s Irish Cesarewitch and both must enter calculations, along with The Shunter, who claimed the English equivalent in October.
WIN: TOO FRIENDLY
6
DANGER: MAGELLAN STRAIT
PRINCE ALEX, who was fancied for the highlight itself, can gain some compensation for missing the Chester Cup cut. Dominic Ffrench Davis’ seven-year-old proved his stamina for two miles once and for all when winning with plenty up his sleeve at Newbury and a 3lb penalty shouldn’t be a hindrance. Ian Williams is mob-handed in his attempt to follow up last year’s victory, with 2023 Cup fourth Law Of The Sea possibly the pick. It’s Good To Laugh, third in this 12 months ago, and Tony Martin’s pair Hamsiyann and Alphonse Le Grande are just two more to consider
WIN: PRINCE ALEX
DANGER: LAW OF THE SEA
Tribal Wisdom has been in fine form on the all-weather, but hasn’t managed to get his head in front on turf yet so is passed over in favour of ORDER OF MALTA. The son of Lope De Vega acquitted himself quite well after breaking through at Nottingham last summer but the handicapper continues to loosen his grip and, given his connections, it’s likely he will be ready to roll for this. Golspie warrants attention on his first start for a new stable, while Chillhi has gone well here before.
WIN: ORDER OF MALTA
DANGER: TRIBAL WISDOM
GISELLES DEFENCE made amends for a near-miss on his UK debut when justifying favouritism with the minimum of fuss at Pontefract last week. As long as those two runs in relatively quick succession haven’t taken a toll, he can follow up under a penalty that leaves him 3lb well-in. Turner Girl, Polar Princess and Destinado also arrive in winning form, while Alan King has taken this prize for the past two years so Whispering Royal has to be given consideration.
WIN: GISELLES DEFENCE
DANGER: TURNER GIRL

The National Gallery Collection
The National Gallery is our nation’s treasure box: home to one of the world’s greatest collections of art. In honour of its 200th anniversary and being their official partner, Boodles designers have taken inspiration from paintings in the gallery to create ‘The National Gallery Collection’ The suites within the collection take inspiration from artistic techniques: Play of Light, Brushstrokes, Perspective, and the theme of Motherhood within the gallery.
Play of Light
Gallen-Kallela’s depiction of Lake Keitele inspired the Play of Light ‘Lake Keitele’ pieces, with Boodles designers mimicking the water’s zigzag pattern using marquise cut diamonds. Monet’s ‘Water-Lillies, Setting Sun’ influenced a lively palette of pink tourmaline and peridot in the second set. Seurat’s ‘The Morning Walk’ and Renoir’s ‘Moulin Huet Bay’ guided pieces in the corresponding suite, particularly its bright sea blues and lemony sparkles.
Brushstrokes
Paul Cézanne’s ‘Avenue at Chantilly’, ‘Hillside in Provence’ and ‘Bathers’ all inform our new ‘Brush Strokes’ suite. Cézanne’s loose, open use of oil paint – developed from his work with watercolours – suggests dashing,
dynamic motion. Boodles designers sought to bring to life the ‘swoosh’ of his brush in the suite. The ‘Brush Strokes’ ring is one of the stars of the show: at its heart, an 18.64 carat aquamarine.
Perspective
Canaletto’s ‘Piazza San Marco’ and ‘Entrance to the Cannaregio’ inspired our ‘Perspective’ bangle. In the former work, there’s a sense we’re right there – in among the action of the colonnade, glancing through an archway into 1758 The arches that line Saint Mark’s Square and shape thousands of windows throughout the city’s palaces are key motifs in these pieces. In the ring and bangle, you can look through an arch to see one further away The mystery of Venice, a city of masks, creates intrigue amid the white diamonds. The bangle features Ashoka cut stones: a unique cut featuring 62 facets, only available to buy from Boodles in Europe.
Motherhood
Rather than an artistic technique, but a re-occurring theme; ‘Motherhood’
in all of its forms is a unifying subject in the Gallery. From the tender portrayals seen in Sassoferrato’s painting to the depictions of the Virgin Mary and Christ child, the essence of motherhood, characterised by loving care, echoes timelessly through the centuries. The embrace, of figures’ heads leaning lovingly and arms curved in gentle embrace, serves as the inspiration for our Motherhood suite.
To create this collection, Boodles designers gained special access to the Gallery, discussing the piece in depth with expert curators to distil the detail of some of the Gallery’s finest treasures into unique and wearable works of art. Meaning you can now carry a Canaletto wherever you go, and enjoy Raphael in the form of a ring.

2023 WINNER REVICH
2 RUN OVER SEVEN AND A HALF FURLONGS
Richard Spencer’s Revich came into this contest off the back of a rather modest season. A modest ninth of 22 in the Lincoln at Doncaster where he struggled to make much impact was followed by a third placed finish in a Newbury Class 2 Handicap later that same month. He stepped down in trip for this race and that seemed to benefit him greatly. Ridden by Jim Crowley, the gelding started at the rear of the field, but swiftly began to make headway up the field. He took the lead inside the final furlong and soon pulled clear of his rivals, winning by three lengths. TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF £45,000 £22,923 TO THE WINNER

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a seven furlong, about 127 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This race is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards maiden stakes for three-year-olds which have not run more than twice. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

It had been a busy year for Pride Of America as he approached this race. The Amy Murphytrained gelding had scored in impressive style in a strong Kempton Handicap in January before struggling when fourth of five at Chelmsford in March. Another below par effort followed when sixth in Listed company at Saint-Cloud before taking a break due to wind surgery. That operation proved to be a success as he looked much improved when taking this one. It was a great ride from Hollie Doyle in the saddle as Pride Of America was a clear winner, much more dominant than the distance would suggest

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

BOLSTER and Botanical are low-mileage 4-y-os with the scope to rate quite a bit higher this year. NAMED after a small village nine miles south-east of Chester racecourse, the Huxley Stakes is the highest-quality race staged during the three-day Boodles May Festival. It is a Group 2 boasting a total prize fund of £120,000, meaning it ranks behind only the tote+ Chester Cup in terms of its monetary value.
The inaugural edition in 1999 was won, somewhat ironically, by a horse called Chester House. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Kieren Fallon, he won Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes on his next start. But it was after Chester House was switched to renowned American trainer Bobby Frankel that he enjoyed his most significant success, in the Arlington Million in Chicago in 2000, on what would prove to be a glorious swansong to his career.
A decade later, the John Gosden-trained Debussy went one better than Chester House by winning the Huxley Stakes and the Arlington Million in the same season.
HUXLEY STAKES HISTORY
Chester was a course which brought out the best in Debussy. In two other visits here, he finished third to Golden Sword in the 2009 Chester Vase, as well as notching the last of his six career wins in the Stand Cup, a Listed race, in September 2011.
Only two horses have won this race on multiple occasions. Maraahel secured consecutive victories in 2007, 2008 and 2009, making him the single most successful horse to have run in the Huxley Stakes and contributing three of Stoute’s record of six wins as a trainer. Forest Ranger is the only other horse to grab the glory more than once, coming home in front in 2018 and 2019 for Malton trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Tony Hamilton.
However, perhaps the Huxley Stakes’ most distinguished graduate is Noble Mission. Or at least he should be. The winner in 2014 for Sir Henry Cecil’s widow Lady Cecil, Noble Mission was all too often remembered for being the
year-younger brother of the equine phenomenon that was Frankel, rather than for his own achievements on the track.
Undeniably a late-bloomer, Noble Mission’s final year was his breakthrough one at the top level. After inflicting another defeat on old rival Telescope here in the Huxley Stakes, Noble Mission notched a belated first Grade 1 victory less than three weeks later in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in Ireland.
The rigours of international travel were no barrier to further success for Noble Mission. During a jet-set summer, Noble Mission won a second Group 1 in France and finished a neck runner-up in another in Germany. He returned to Britain and bowed out on a high that autumn by winning his third Group 1 of the year in the Champion Stakes at Ascot with a gutsy display on heavy ground.
Last year saw Point Lonsdale pick up the win off the back of success in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes at the Curragh the prior month. Following that hard-fought success here he contested the Coronation Cup but was ultimately unsuccessful, third behind Emily Upjohn and Westover.

LAST YEAR’S HUXLEY STAKES
A small but select field went to post for last year’s renewal of the Group 2 Huxley Stakes. There may have been just the six runners, but it still looked set to be a great contest.
The favourite in the betting was the Aidan O’Brien trained Point Lonsdale off the back of his impressive win in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes at the Curragh a month prior. Ridden on the day by Ryan Moore, the then four-year-old had been backed all the way down to 5/6. There was good reason for the support as well, Aidan O’Brien’s success at this meeting has been well documented and Ryan Moore had won this the last year years, leaving him on course for the hattrick.
His main rival looked to be the Andrew Balding-trained Foxes Tales with the gelding having started the season in fine form. He was a respectable third in the Group 3 Winter Derby on the all-weather at Lingfield in February before scoring in the Listed Magnolia Stakes at Kempton in
April. He was back on the turf here and looked to be a real threat. Mujtaba was also of interest with the William Haggastrained gelding having scored by an impressive seven lengths in a Newbury handicap last time out.
It was Poker Face however who took the early lead, closely followed by Foxes Tales and Royal Champion. Point Lonsdale pressed the issue but was racing a touch lazily. Mujtaba was bringing up the rear alongside Noel Meade’s Lafayette. As they entered into the final two furlongs the race really began to take shape. Foxes Tale began to weaken heavily, apparently unsuited by the tight track, as did Royal Champion, Poker Face and then Lafayette. Point Lonsdale hung right, still looking an unconvincing winner but managed to take the lead, chased closely by Mujtaba. It was a tight finish, Point Lonsdale just doing enough to hold onto the win as Mujtaba drifted towards the finish.
FACTS & STATS
THE IRE-INCENTIVE, IT PAYS TO BUY IRISH HUXLEY STAKES
Point Lonsdale was very well backed coming into this race. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, he had won the Group 3 Alleged Stakes at the Curragh in April in fine fashion and so it was little surprised to see him so heavily favoured in this one. With Ryan Moore in the saddle, Point Lonsdale went off at a short 5/6 but wasn’t as dominant as many might have expected He raced a little lazily and began to hang right later in the race This wasn’t enough to deny him however as he just did enough to hold onto the win, just a neck ahead of Mujtaba in second

This one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class middle distance performers. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, although penalties are then awarded to horses that have already won above a certain level - 3lb for a Group 2 victory or 5lb for a Group 1 success.

The feature race of the 2023 Boodles May Festival saw the Harry Fry and Saffie Osborne team up as Metier produced a stellar performance to clutch the win.
Metier scored the victory with Saffie Osborne guiding him home in the two miles, two and a half furlongs contest, staying on well to win by a neck.
His form coming into this race had been inconsistent. Starting with an impressive win in the November Handicap at Doncaster, he was then pulled up in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day. Reverting back to the flat he was outpaced and finished last at Kempton before being
pulled up over hurdles once again the Imperial Cup at Sandown. He got back on track when moved back to the flat at Musselburgh in April, a very strong second, half a length behind in the Queens Cup at Musselburgh in April and looked like he might be getting back in the groove for this race.
It was going to be a tough one for him however with Call My Bluff looking to be a major threat. The Dominic Ffrench Davis-trained
LAST YEAR’S CHESTER CUP
gelding had posted a solid third in a strong Newmarket Handicap when last seen in September and had one at this course before. Falcon Eight had won this race handily in 2021 and while he could only manage fifth in 2022, he couldn’t be discounted despite an apparent downturn in form. Calling The Wind was drawing some admiring glances as well.
Metier was away quickly, settling down in the middle of the pack along with Calling The Wind. Falcon Eight didn’t start well, he was slowly into stride and never really managed to get going. Call My Bluff however started very well, finding himself in a prominent position early alongside Rajinsky and just behind the early leader Emiyn.
It was inside the final two furlongs that Saffie Osborne and Metier made their move, pushing on and making quick headway through the pack. They switched to the left inside the final furlong and pushed into the lead, passing Call My Bluff late on. Hugo Palmer’s Zoffee sprang into action as well, pushing on to contest the lead. Calling The Wind ran short of room and found no extra while Falcon Eight was still stuck in the rear. Metier battled on well to hold onto the lead until the finish, just a neck ahead of the fast-finishing Zoffee. Call My Bluff rallied when headed by Metier but could only manage third.

THE tote+ Chester Cup is the crown jewel of the Boodles May Festival. It is also the oldest, longest and most valuable race of the entire season here at Chester Established in 1824, it was originally known as the Tradesmen’s Cup. Then following brief spells as the Trademen’s Plate and the Chester Trades’ Cup, the race was renamed the Chester Cup in 1884, and has remained that way ever since.
During that time, the Chester Cup has undergone a series of minor increases to its original race distance of 2m2f and 77 yards. It was extended to its present distance of 2m2f and 140 yards in 1994, and usually takes a little longer than four minutes to complete depending on ground conditions. Today’s race carries total prize money of £150,000, establishing it as a valuable early-season target for Britain and Ireland’s leading long-distance handicappers.
Top Cees is
CHESTER CUP
Nine horses have won the Chester Cup twice, lending weight to the argument that it can be a specialist’s race. 2021 winner Falcon Eight will be looking to make it ten as he lines up again this year. A number of high-class jumps horses have also proved well suited to the demands of the Chester Cup.
Chief among them is the legendary Sea Pigeon, who powered to consecutive victories in 1977 and 1978 for Yorkshire trainer Peter Easterby and jockey Mark Birch.
Sea Pigeon was seventh in the 1973 Derby, but had reinvented himself as top-class hurdler by finishing fourth in the Champion Hurdle and winning the Scottish Champion Hurdle prior to his first Chester Cup win. In a remarkable career, Sea Pigeon won Cheltenham’s Champion Hurdle twice (1980, 1981), the Fighting Fifth Hurdle twice (1978, 1980) and the Scottish Champion Hurdle for a second time in 1978, as well as The Ebor, under top-weight of 10st, in 1979.
a two-time Chester Cup winner for trainer Lynda Ramsden, wife of renowned pro punter Jack Ramsden. Top Cees stormed to a five-length success on good-to-firm ground under Kieran Fallon in 1995; then ran out an even more convincing winner for Jimmy Fortune in 1997, romping home by 10 lengths as his rivals toiled in the soft ground. Also a smart hurdler, Top Cees tasted success at the Cheltenham Festival as he mastered 23 rivals to claim the 1998 Coral Cup. Few winners of the Chester Cup have been afforded such a raucous hero’s reception as Overturn in 2011. A hugely popular horse who always wore his heart on his sleeve, Overtun’s all-the-way victory here completed an unprecedented 12 months in which he also won the Northumberland Plate and Galway Hurdle – a trio of big-field handicaps which suitably showcased this pint-sized warrior’s trademark versatility and durability.
Not content with winning one Chester Cup, his Cholmondeley-based jumps trainer Donald McCain saddled the winner and runner-up 12 months later. This time Overturn had to settle for the runners-up spot as Ile De Re, who was debuting for McCain following a recent switch from Ian Williams’ yard, swooped to conquer a furlong out.
Arguably the most talented winner of the modern era is Trip To Paris. Following his 2015 victory under former Grand National-winning jockey Graham Lee, the Ed Dunlop-trained four-year-old made a successful transition to Group 1 level only six weeks later by lifting the Ascot Gold Cup.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This race is a two miles, two furlongs about 140 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

THE Chester Plate is a valuable consolation race for horses targeted at the Chester Cup, but which don’t make the final field.
When the Plate was staged for the first time in 2018, the Chester Cup joined a select band of historic and popular Flat handicaps to be awarded a consolation race. The others are the Ayr Gold Cup, the Bunbury Cup and Cambridgeshire (both at Newmarket), the Stewards’ Cup (at Goodwood), the Lincoln (at Doncaster) and the Northumberland Plate (at Newcastle).
Like its big brother, the Chester Plate has also proved a happy hunting ground for horses with plenty of hurdling experience. The inaugural winner Look My Way had enjoyed a productive few months over hurdles in the months before his Plate victory, winning at Ludlow,
CHESTER PLATE HISTORY
finishing second in the Grade 2 Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham and then running a creditable race at the Festival. He was challenged hard inside the final furlong here at Chester by Coeur De Lion, but hung on grimly to win for his Scottish-born jockey Jason Hart and dual-purpose Yorkshire-based handler John Quinn.
Coeur De Lion, himself a talented hurdler, would get his moment of glory in 2019 as he went one place better. Trained by Alan King, a jumps trainer to trade but who has made a niche for himself as a plunderer of major staying races on the Flat, Coeur Du Lion romped to a wide-margin win over 2014 Chester Cup hero Suegioo.
Green Book hadn’t won over hurdles prior to his start-to-finish Plate success 12 months ago under fifty-something Liverpool jockey
Franny Norton, for whom Chester has been such a happy hunting ground down the years. However, Green Book had run well to be second onhis only start over hurdles, finishing runner-up at Hereford 79 days earlier. Freshened up in the interim by his trainer Venetia Williams, he arrived at the Roodee tuned to the minute and duly ran his rivals ragged from the front.
The talented five-year-old has subsequently enjoyed his share of success at the jumping game, most notably when landing a Grade 3 handicap hurdle at Sandown in February.
Venetia Williams has emerged as an early leading trainer for this race having won two previous renewals though she will be without a rider this year. Franny Norton, who was aboard those winners, is in action again this year however. He will be riding Dreams Adozen for Charlie Johnston so keep an eye out for him. Can he get the hattrick?
Zinc White was a shock winner last year as the 33/1 shot produced a stunning performance, winning the race in comfortable fashion.

2023 WINNER GREYSTOKE
After a run of three straight seconds, the then Alan King-trained gelding had finished runnerup in back-to-back races at Wolverhampton before hitting the crossbar for the third time at Southwell in late March, Greystoke finally managed to go one better here. Ridden on the day by Benoit De La Sayette, he was prominent throughout the race. It was a comfortable win in the end for the gelding as he made light work of his opposition, clear of the rest of the field by the final furlong.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTON
Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.
