WELCOME

A warm welcome to you all this afternoon and thank you for joining us for our Sky Bet Sunday Series Raceday which is our first industry ‘Premier’ fixture.

Today is the richest raceday ever to be staged here at Hamilton Park with over £225,000 in prize money up for grabs across seven races. The Sky Bet Sunday Series is a fantastic initiative and my thanks go to Sky Bet as well as the British Horse Racing Authority, Racecourse Media Group and ITV Racing, all of whom have played a key part in the development of this series which is now in it’s fourth year Particular thanks go to all of the Owners, Trainers, Jockey’s and Stable Staff for their support of today’s fixture, it’s great for us to be welcoming Horsemen from across the UK and Ireland to Hamilton Park as well as the cameras from ITV Racing who will be broadcasting all of today’s action on ITV4.

As always there are some fantastic bonuses and prizes linked to the Sky Bet Sunday Series which should provide some excellent competition over the six fixtures in the series. These include;

£10,000 Jockey Cup - At each Fixture of the 2024 Sky Bet Sunday Series, the jockey to accrue the most points across the 7 races of the Fixture will win £10,000.

· £100,000 to the Owner of the first horse to win 3 races in the Series Stable Staff prizes to the three leading stables with guaranteed prizes of £10,000 (1st), £3,000 (2nd) and £2,000 (3rd), based on points from winners, seconds, thirds.

Enhanced Best Turned Out awards of £250 per race (split for 1st, 2nd and 3rd) for all races in the Series, to ensure Stable Staff are rewarded for their work preparing their horses for each race

With plenty of runners this afternoon we’re sure to see some extremely competitive racing throughout the card and it’s particularly pleasing to see a full-field set to go to post in today’s feature race, the Class 2 Sky Bet Build A Bet Handicap worth £75,000 at 5.10pm. Amongst the field there are four course and distance winners including the Jim Goldie-trained Jordan Electrics who won by a neck over the same distance at last year’s Sunday Series fixture. Top of the weights is Aberama Gold for David O’Meara who will be looking for a return to the form that saw him pick up five wins across the UK in 2023.

Once the on-track action has finished, local cover band The Raggaels will be playing in the Parade Ring Marquee which will be a great way to end the evening. The bars will be open until 8.45pm, so do stay on after the last race to enjoy the party.

Our fixtures are coming thick and fast this month. Next up is our Sodexo Live! Raceday which takes place on Thursday 6 June, followed by two more fixtures before our ever-popular Saints & Sinners Racenight takes centre stage on the evening of 27 June Once we get into July and August we have some of our biggest fixtures of the season, including our Cube Glass Ladies Night on Saturday 3 August and the historic Phoenix Utilities Lanark Silver Bell Racenight on Friday 23 August. Tickets are available online for all of our fixtures with some great savings to be made when you buy in advance via our website www.hamilton-park.co.uk

Have a wonderful raceday and I hope you back a few winner or two!

Kind regards,

Racing Jargon Buster

Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next

ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface

AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status

APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding

BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature

CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old

COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track

DAM mother of a horse

DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail

DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)

DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before

EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5

FILLY female horse up to four years old

FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year

FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)

GELDING castrated horse

GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard

GREEN (of a horse) inexperienced

HAND unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder

JOLLY betting parlance for the favourite in a race - the horse with the shortest odds

JUDGE official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners

JUVENILE two-year-old horse

hamilton-park.co.uk
WWW.HAMILTON-PARK.CO.UK

MAIDEN horse which has not won a race

MARE female horse five years and over

MONKEY betting parlance for £500

ODDS ON odds where the winnings are less than the stake (which is of course returned to you): thus a winning £2 bet at 2-1 on wins you £1

OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth

ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit

OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season

PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders

PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure

PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed

PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published

PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish

PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing

PONY betting parlance for £25

RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse

RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle

SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse

SIRE father of a horse

SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod

SPRINGER/STEAMER a horse whichshortens dramatically in the betting

SP/STARTING PRICE the official price of a horse at which bets are settled in the betting shops

STEWARDS the panel of men and women - usually a total of four - who are responsible for seeing that the Rules of Racing are adhered to

STEWARDS’ ENQUIRY enquiry by the stewards into the running of a race

TIC-TAC the bookmaker’s method of relaying odds information on the racecourse, by means of hand signals

WEIGH IN/WEIGH OUT weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled

YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets

YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth

Second Race

THE SKY BET, FOR THE FANS HANDICAP

STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and three furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Third Race

THE SKY BET CLUB HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (39 wins from 359 runners, 11%) runs FAYLAQ

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): James Owen (7 wins from 28 runners, 25%) runs TOO FRIENDLY Longest Traveller: FAIRBANKS trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 387 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 4-1 Fairbanks (GB), 13-2 Too Friendly (GB), 8-1 Capital Theory (GB), Hope You Can Run (IRE), 10-1 Geremia (IRE), 11-1 Dark Jedi (IRE), 12-1 Toshizou (IRE), 16-1 Flash Bardot (GB), 18-1 Simple Star (IRE), 22-1 Maasai Mara (GB), Faylaq (GB), 25-1 Dark Moon Rising (IRE), 28-1 Wickywickywheels (IRE) RACE SUMMARY: FAIRBANKS showed the benefit of his reappearance run when resuming winning ways in good style at Newcastle 3 weeks ago and, with the distinct possibility of more to come from Andrew Balding’s 4-y-o, he earns the vote to defy a further rise in the weights back on turf Too Friendly likely has more to offer on the level and having not been seen to best effect last time is feared most. Charlie Johnston’s pair Hope You Can Run and Capital Theory can also get involved. 1-2-3: 1.FAIRBANKS 2.TOO FRIENDLY 3.HOPE YOU CAN RUN (IRE) STEWARDS NOTE:

Fourth Race

5.10p.m.

THE SKY BET BUILD A BET HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (39 wins from 359 runners, 11%) runs AMERICAN AFFAIR, BE PROUD & JORDAN ELECTRICS

Goodwood winner Desperate Hero is another going the right way, while Aberama Gold and Bergerac are a couple of the regulars in these races who must be on today’s shortlist.

ONE MILE, ONE FURLONG about 35 YARDS (9f abt 35yds) (1800m)

THE SKY BET REQUEST A BET FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (34 wins from 191 runners, 18%) runs CLOUDY SKYE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (10 wins from 56 runners, 18%) runs DORA MILAJE

Longest Traveller: FIVER FRIDAY trained by P Traynor, Ireland.

BETTING FORECAST: 15-8 Warda Jamila (IRE),

4-1 Star Jasmine (IRE), 13-2 Strong Impact (IRE), Cloudy Skye (IRE), 12-1 Fiver Friday (IRE), 18-1 Dora Milaje (IRE), 25-1 Carolina Reaper (GB), 28-1 Our Town (FR)

RACE SUMMARY: WARDA JAMILA arrives with a progressive profile and was well on top at the line when scoring at Ascot three weeks ago, so she’s worth chancing to go in again at the likely expense of Star Jasmine, who is also going the right way. Strong Impact also makes some appeal for all that she lacks the potential of the aforementioned pair 1-2-3: 1.WARDA

AROUND THE COURSES IN 80 DAYS

Horse racing fanatic Graham Arnold is on a challenge to visit all 59 British racecourses in 80 days: starting at Exeter on the 7th April and ending at Worcester on the 26th June.

He’s doing this to raise money for Dementia UK, a charity very close to his heart. Graham’s mission is to raise as much money as possible for Dementia UK, and to raise awareness about the impact of dementia on individuals and families.

With your help, we can make a difference. Donations can be made through the website: www.aroundthecourses.com
