Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /

CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

LAST TIME OUT | SUNDAY 28TH APRIL

Our last meeting saw the John & Thady Gosden-trained Danielle get off to an emphatic start, cruising to a 12-length success over Cabrera in second. With Robert Havlin on board, the short-priced favourite certainly justified the market support, going clear from two furlongs out. The three-year-old daughter of Cracksman was never in any danger and got her first career win. Lady La Fay was a further two-and-a-quarter lengths behind Cabrera in third.

The following race saw another favourite steal the show, with Good Morning Alex completing a comfortable win for trainer David and Nicola Barron and jockey Callum Rodriguez. The gelding made all and was clear over a furlong from the finish. He was never challenged, resulting in him notching his first win on turf. John L Sullivan was four-and-a-quarter lengths behind in second with Infinite Honour in third.

It was a much closer contest in the third race of the day, The Join The Vickers.Bet Free Bet Club Novice Stakes, where Own Accord found just enough to fend off the danger from Extrication in second. Trained by David O’Meara and ridden by Cieren Fallon, Own Accord was prominent in the early stages before being ridden over a furlong out. The filly kept on well and took the lead in the final strides.

There was plenty of support for Harswell Duke in the following race, but it was Astral Spirit who took the honours, seeing off the favourite by half-a-length Astral Spirit, trained by Pam Sly and ridden by Shane Kelly, made all and despite hanging right inside the final furlong, kept on well to see off Harswell Duke. Star Shield and Admiral Nelson finished third and fourth respectively.

The fifth race saw Illusionist win by a lengthand-three-quarters for trainer Grant Tuer and jockey Harrison Shaw. The seven-year-old was pushed along when two furlongs out and kept on well to lead inside the final furlong. Manilla Scouse was his closest challenger but was unable to cut the deficit inside the closing stages.

In the penultimate race of the day, Canaria Queen kept on well inside the final furlong to take the honours for trainer Tim Easterby and jockey David Allan. Danzart was three-quarters of a length behind in second but was unable to find any extra to prevent the eventual winner.

Another excellent meeting was then completed with an enthralling finish which saw The Crafty Mole hold off Filibustering to win by a neck. This win completed a double on the day for David O’Meara. There was a lot of support for My Noble Lord but the favourite finished fourth behind Believitanducan.

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

I Got Soul looks an interesting newcomer as a daughter of Havana Grey and could go well if her inexperience doesn’t let her down, but UNSPOKEN LOVE is preferred. She caught the eye when third at Thirsk on her debut despite running green and looks all set for a big run now. Eartha was ahead of her in second that day and is an obvious danger, but the selection might be open to greater improvement and can reverse the form

WIN: UNSPOKEN LOVE

RACE TWO

DANGER:: EARTHA

Key Look has to be considered with five wins over this trip, four of those off this mark or higher, following a return to form when third at Catterick last month. Lockdown Lass is capable at this level, but NIGHT OF DESIRE is hard to get away from. An easy maiden winner at Chelmsford in February, she makes her handicap debut off a mark of 68 which may underestimate her ability.

WIN: NIGHT OF DESIRE

RACE THREE

DANGER:: KEY LOOK

It may pay to side with the relatively unexposed STRIVE, who is stepping up in trip in a first-time hood after making all at Newcastle in February. Hayley Turner keeps the ride and may be able to steer the gelding home in front once more, with Mon Etoile and Glistening Nights perhaps his biggest dangers after their recent placed efforts.

WIN: STRIVE

RACE FOUR

DANGER:: MON ETOILE

YAZAMAN had been waiting a long time to add to his debut success when winning at Nottingham last month and Paul Midgley’s charge proved it was no flash in the pan when following up at Beverley just five days ago The six-year-old escapes a penalty for that apprentice handicap triumph and this looks an excellent chance to complete the hat-trick. Warminster was on target at Ayr last time out and he is the main danger, while Granny B appeals most of the remainder

WIN: YAZAMAN

RACE FIVE

DANGER:: WARMINSTER

Wintercrack was far from disgraced when finishing second to a progressive sort at Ripon in April and, though respected off an unchanged mark, a chance can be taken on ROXANNE. Too keen to do herself justice over 1m4f at Doncaster last time, having made an extremely promising stable bow at Chelmsford, a drop in trip could suit Ed Dunlop’s filly The daughter of Soldier Hollow might be more at home on better ground, while Loughville is also noted.

WIN: ROXANNE

RACE SIX

DANGER:: WINTERCRACK

The form of SMOOTH SILESIE’s recent Nottingham success received a timely boost when the runner-up struck at Catterick on Friday. A subsequent 6lb rise might not be enough to prevent Lisa Williamson’s filly from completing a double and she is preferred to Pinpoint. Sergeant Mayer continues to perform with credit and must enter calculations as he goes in search a first career success. Batal Dandy is no back number either

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-old fillies only Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 65 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

THANK YOU LES NK THANK YOU LES

Today we have a race titled for our Stables Manager, Les Frost.

Les is retiring from his position at the Racecourse at the end of this season, although he has promised that he is still going to pop in to help out on racedays next season.

Les practically grew up on the Racecourse, as his Father Fred was Stables Manager before him, and his Uncle Cyril Frost, was the Head Groundsman.

Although not a racing Jockey, Les was a keen equestrian, keeping his horses at Wetherby in the fields behind the stables block. He bred and produced his own horses, and was very successful in ridden hunter showing classes around the local area. Les initially took up employment with Fox Saddler’s in Wetherby and he also used to work on the fences on racedays.

In 1995 following Fred’s retirement, Les took over the Stables Manager role and also worked out on the track as a member of the grounds team.

Les is a racing enthusiast, and has kept scrapbooks of news clippings and photographs of Wetherby Races going back over decades. He is an avid pointto-point racegoer and over the years has also had shares in several racehorses.

Les had a winner at Wetherby on 27th December 2014, with Royal McNab and the picture here shows him proudly standing in our Parade Ring on the day.

Les also shows and breedsl rabbits and he and his wife Polly keep a menagerie of pets and animals at home.

We take this opportunity to thank Les for his hard work, dedication and contribution to continued excellence at Wetherby Racecourse and we want to wish him and Polly, all the very best of luck, good health and happiness in retirement.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. A case can be made for a few of these so it is worth siding with the unexposed TANGO MAN to take a big step forward on his debut for George Boughey after breathing surgery and gain a breakthrough victory. Highwaygrey didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when fourth at Ayr last time and is next on the list ahead of the handily-weighted duo Typical Woman and Clear Angel. Loughville completes the shortlist.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 60 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

TIMEFORM VIEW 20/1, ninth of 10 in handicap at Redcar (7f, good) 14 days ago Back down in trip Not easy to make a case for.

DECLARED RUNNERS 10 2023: SOUTH DAKOTA SIOUX (IRE) 3 9 4 Mark Winn 15-2 (David O’Meara) 10 ran Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 9. Blinkers worn by No 4, 6. Tongue Strap worn by No 8. Stewards Note: PINPOINT: Following its run on 20/5/2024 it was reported that the horse stumbled and was slowly away.SERGEANT MAYER: Following its run on 19/5/2024 it was reported that the horse became unbalanced and stumbled.

Probable S.P’s: 10-3 Pinpoint (GB), 4-1 Sergeant Mayer (IRE), 5-1 Smooth Silesie (IRE), 13-2 Ninety Nine (IRE), 12-1 Desert Master (GB), DC Flyer (GB), 16-1 Batal Dandy (IRE), 33-1 Stoneacre Girl (GB), Coin Power (FR), Chillout Charlie (IRE)

PINPOINT is fancied to quickly regain the winning thread having been an unlucky third at Redcar last time out when stumbling at the start. Nottingham scorer Smooth Silesie looks the one to give him most to do, although Sergeant Mayer can also have a big say on the back of his eye-catching Ripon fifth. Batal Dandy is another who commands plenty of respect if the fitting of cheekpieces ekes out some improvement.

THE RESULT

WETHERBY STEEPLECHASE COMMITTEE will present a cash prize of £50 to the stablehand responsible for the Best Turned Out Horse in this race. They will also present a memento to the winning owner.
