As we move into the summer season, we have the first of our six-race cards this evening, as well as a later finish time of 8.55 pm.
The reason for having a six races is that the flat turf season is getting under way and the BHA feel that the pool of available horses would not support more races, so some fixtures will have six and some will have seven. The last race can be programmed up to 9.00 pm in the summer period, as the lighter evenings allow the racing staff a greater chance of getting home before dark.
The first race tonight features some lightly raced three year olds with the George Boughey trained, Inns of Fear, having the best form after his second at Newcastle at the end of March.
There are, also, some interesting newcomers, which could well be worth inspecting in the paddock beforehand. All the races this evening have eight or more runners – at the time of writing – allowing each way betting, which should give you a greater chance of beating the bookies!
Good luck and have a great evening.
Neil Graham Racing Director

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Gelded since a narrow defeat over 6f at Newcastle last month on his first start for the George Boughey team, INNS OF FEAR should appreciate going back up in trip and he can deservedly get off the mark at the fourth time of asking. Not beaten far on his debut at Lingfield last month, Key Witness is entitled to improve for that experience, while the well-related Koge looks to be the pick of the newcomers.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Narrowly denied in his attempt to land a double at Southwell last month, RICH RHYTHM looks to be more than capable of gaining compensation off just 1lb higher Harriet Bethell’s charge may have too much for Nammos and stablemate Flag Of St George, who is likely to appreciate the drop back to 7f. G’daay has strong claims if bouncing back to the form of his second over C&D two starts ago.

Today we are pleased to welcome the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), a remarkable charity celebrating 55 years of enriching lives through the power of horses. RDA is the third organisation we’re supporting through our ‘10 Years of Community’ fundraising campaign.
With over 400 centres across the UK, RDA offers clinically led rehabilitation for individuals as young as two living with physical, mental, social, or learning disabilities. Their therapy combines Physiotherapy, Hippotherapy, Equine Assisted Learning, and Pat therapy
Jo and Beth from Chelmsford City Racecourse recently visited REACH, a local RDA centre, to meet the team and two inspiring beneficiaries, Didge and Albert. They saw first-hand the incredible work being done, including riding sessions, agility training with Shetland ponies, carriage driving, and a calming sensory garden.
Speaking with Didge’s mother Caroline, she shared how the support and services provided by REACH have positively impacted her son’s life.
“When I was looking for things to do to enrich my little one’s life, I thought that as I and all my family love animals and have horses that I would like to take Didge for an experience. I couldn’t find anywhere that would take a two year old with severe mental and physical disabilities, which are; brain damage, autism, cervicothoracic scoliosis, tethered cord syndrome, extreme sensitivity to external stimuli and toe walking.
It was by calling the RDA that I found out about REACH. I had no expectations, just hoped he would show some signs of enjoyment.
To my surprise not only did he enjoy it, but he has also changed; he is much more interested in his environment, he loves to touch things and even interacting with our pet dog, he seems interested in where he is and they have started to enjoy each other’s company
Didge seems so much more vocal and engaging with the world around him and so much stronger and balanced. He is surpassing everyone’s expectations both physically and mentally
I love watching him enjoy himself and do something that is amazing to watch. I cannot praise Louise and all the team at REACH enough.”
Beth Lovell REACH center manager added “The charity was set up about 10 years ago by Louise Barrett whose sister had cerebral palsy, Louise then trained in hippotherapy which led to founding the charity REACH and then becoming part of the RDA group.
We needed to expand our services to support not only children with disabilities but also those struggling with mental health. With the right environment already in place, Louise trained as an equine facilitated practitioner to offer more targeted help. We’re also an accredited alternative education provider, supporting young people in gaining an ‘Animal Care’ qualification.
I started as a volunteer and then gave up my job as a stockbroker as I love it here It is so rewarding seeing the center build children’s confidence, so they can interact and socialise with their peers and other children, and we look forward to helping more people in the future who need it”.
If you would like to donate or meet the team, please visit their stand outside the Parade Ring.

SMOKEY MALONE occupied the runner-up berth in this class here in February and competes off an unchanged mark. The seven-year-old clearly remains on a workable rating and it would be no surprise to see him go one better Yakhabar was only beaten a length into second at Southwell at the start of the month and can go well, while Merry Minister is another to consider.

HALA JOZA had Woodhay Whisper (third) and She’s A Dark Horse (fifth) behind when she filled the runner-up spot at Lingfield earlier in the month and that looks the key piece of form to focus on. HALA JOZA produced her best effort to date by some way when runner-up at Lingfield a fortnight ago and, if able to build on that here, she may well go one better at the chief expense of Woodhay Whisper, who was just over a length adrift in third on that occasion and renews rivalry on 1lb better terms. Metamora admittedly hasn’t shown much in a handful of appearances but she’s one to note in the betting now handicapping off a lowly mark with a visor applied and Silvestre De Sousa booked.

ALWAYS A STAR is progressing gradually on the back of a lengthy absence, running his best race yet tackling this trip for the first time when third at Yarmouth 3 weeks ago. In good hands and appealing as the type to improve further, he’s of interest from this sort of mark. Cavalry Call is knocking on the door and feared, with Afloat and Fox Avatar others to consider in what looks a pretty strong handicap for the grade.
