Evening Racing

Everyone at Chelmsford City Racecourse wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on our last fixture of 2022. We are due to resume racing on Tuesday, 3rd January, which will be the first fixture of another action-packed year. As we look forward to 2023, we are particularly excited about staging our first turf racing next spring. The incredibly hot and dry summer, which continued into the autumn, thwarted our aspirations of having some turf racing at the back end of this year. We will be the first racecourse in Great Britain to stage turf racing under lights, which will be a major innovation not only for us but also for the whole of British racing. We feel that having the ability to put on mixed cards will give our racing a new dimension to the type of racing we can offer and will provide a fantastic spectacle to the public. Have a great evening’s racing and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.
For more information about any of these events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Galaxy Gazer has a number of placed efforts to her name and James Tate’s filly looks likely to play a leading role once again, but MAHARAJAS EXPRESS edges the vote. Successful at Kempton on his debut, he travelled strongly into the race before picking up well under hands and heels to lead close home. Two Desserts hit the frame at Wolverhampton on his racecourse bow and he might not be far away if building on that.

EVOLICATT landed a similar contest at Redcar in October and David Evans’ filly appears to have plenty in her favour back at this level. Bonnsie, who scored under Christian Howarth at Kempton in September, rates as the main danger, with her ability to stay further potentially aiding her cause. Do It For Love was far from disgraced when finishing a good fourth in handicap company last time out and she must be respected with her sights now lowered.

EVOLICATT won a similar event to this at Redcar in October, and with her latest effort in a Kempton nursery easy to excuse, David Evans’ charge looks the way to go back in this grade. Bonnsie, Rebel Angel and Probable are feared most in that order
Bonkersinabundance (third) and SCRAMBLE (second) weren’t separated by much when they met at Kempton on Wednesday and, with a low draw in her favour, the latter is fancied to confirm that form and go one better Giant shaped with promise on his debut at Newmarket and any amount of improvement would bring him firmly into the reckoning. Dream Final and the tongue-tied Motasaleeta might be worth monitoring in the betting market ahead of their racecourse bows.

BONKERSINABUNDANCE may well be a stable lesser light but in a maiden that is unlikely to take much winning, Roger Varian’s filly looks to have found an ideal opportunity. The main danger could be Giant, who was in need of the experience when down the field on debut at Newmarket a couple of months ago, with Scramble completing the shortlist.

G’daay wasn’t disgraced when searching for a hat-trick of victories at Lingfield and the four-year-old is expected to play a leading role once again. Luke Morris struck aboard Barging Thru at Wolverhampton in May and he is entitled to be thereabouts, but the vote goes to LORD RAPSCALLION, who remains well treated following his recent C&D success. Windseeker is capable of being in the mix following his recent third at Wolverhampton.

There is little separating Alafdhal and Araifjan after finishing first and second here respectively earlier this month. The former expected to confirm the placings, despite being 1lb worse off for that narrow success, but a chance is taken on COME ON GIRL, who found herself too far back at Lingfield last month and did well to finish as close as she did. Weydaad made an encouraging racecourse debut when third at Kempton earlier in the month over a mile, but she may prove vulnerable to speedier types now dropped in distance. LET EM HAVE IT ran one of his better races when returning from a short break to finish fourth at Lingfield and Alice Haynes’ charge could gain a breakthrough success now fitted in a first-time visor. THREE DRAGONS proved a different proposition when winning on his stable debut over 1m 6f at Wolverhampton last month. A 620-day absence proved no problem for the Matt Crawley-trained inmate and a 3lb rise in the ratings shouldn’t prevent another bold bid. Capricorn Prince endured a torrid passage on his latest start at Lingfield and looks the main danger ahead of Red Derek, who should appreciate the return to this distance.
