Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

We have a 7-race card for you this evening, which kicks off with an interesting two year old contest. None of these two year olds have raced over further than a mile before and this 10 furlong race is the maximum distance over which any two year old can run, so it is a significant test of stamina for them. Think First won here a shade comfortably last time out but his pedigree does not suggest stamina will be his forte, whereas Sir Laurence Graff is by Galileo out of an Aga Khan-bred mare and he is likely to relish every yard of this trip.

The second race contains plenty of unexposed fillies, so I would recommend a close paddock inspection before making your choice. River Naver was a 300,000 gns yearling purchase, by Showcasing, that ran promisingly first time before disappointing at Carlisle and must have a chance if bouncing back to form. Also, Ti Amo Sempre has run two promising races in defeat and must have claims.

The following five handicaps have plenty of runners and look very competitive, so whether you spend a considerable amount of time studying the form or you simply back number 7 in every race, I wish you the best of luck.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

SIR LAURENCE GRAFF seemed to struggle on the ground at Sandown when last seen and this represents an ideal opportunity to break the maiden. A full-brother to Vinnie Roe Stakes winner Interpretation, this colt is bred to stay and the step up in trip can bring out the best in him. Think First has a 7lb penalty to overcome for a convincing win here last month, while Counter is another open to progress.

Bojink and Rowdown Roza are capable of being in the mix as well.

HARB was a decisive winner of a C&D novice when in the care of Mark Johnston last year and, though winless so far this season, he has taken steps back in the right direction at Windsor and Sandown for his new yard the last twice. The return to 6f should help and he is appealing off a reduced mark. There are dangers aplenty, headed by recent C&D scorer Epic Express and the consistent Thaki. A mention must also be made of Enduring and handicap-debutante Maiden’s Green needs a second look, too.

GRIGGY made the most of a falling handicap mark when winning at Wolverhampton on his latest outing. John Butler’s six-year-old was nudged up 2lb for that narrow success, but he remains extremely well treated on previous form and is expected to go well again. So Savvy might still be a maiden, but he’s been running well in defeat and improvement could be forthcoming for a trainer who often does well with his new recruits. Real Estate heads the remainder

GRIGGY displayed a willing attitude when snapping a losing run with Grace McEntee back aboard at Wolverhampton recently and he should be capable of following up off this 2lb higher mark. Nigg Bay is likely to give it a good shot and Real Estate has to enter calculations, but So Savvy has dipped to a workable mark and is feared most on debut for the Michael Appleby yard.

YIMOU has been hard to predict over the last couple of seasons but he’s now attractively weighted and recent performances have been highly encouraging. With proven form on the surface and effectiveness at the trip, this could be the time to catch him. Top weight High Velocity is consistent and also merits consideration, while Obtain is respected following her 5f success at Wolverhampton, though a 7lb higher mark makes life tougher

Having returned to form with blinkers replacing cheekpieces over 6f here recently, NELSON GAY is likely to prove a tough nut to crack. Indeed, dropping back to the minimum trip looks a good move and he remains 3lb below his last winning mark. ABANDONMENT

If racing is abandoned prior to the first race, a full refund will be given. After the third race has been run, we regret that no refunds can be made in respect of admission charges. Refunds are not issued on the day tickets purchased on the gate must be sent within 28 days of the event to Chelmsford City Racecourse, Chelmsford, CM3 1QP

ACCESSIBILITY

There are dedicated parking spaces, WC’s, and access to all public areas of the grandstand and paddock. We also provide a viewing platform.

ADMISSION

For admission you will require a ticket. This can be an E-ticket that you purchased and received prior to your visit, a hard ticket that you purchased in advance and requested to collect on arrival, or a hard ticket that you have purchased on the gate.

ALCOHOL

Alcohol may not be brought into Chelmsford City Racecourse under any circumstances. If any person is found to have alcohol on or about their person, it will be confiscated and it may result in being asked to leave the racecourse. We operate a Challenge 25 policy.

BETTING

There are three ways to bet at Chelmsford City Racecourse today, fixed odds betting with betfred, pool betting with totepool and the traditional ring bookmakers. Please note all betting ring enquiries should be directed to the Betting Ring Manager located in the small building at the end of the grandstand facing the betting ring. CHILDREN

In the interest of safety and security, children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

DOGS

No dogs are allowed anywhere on the racecourse, with the exception of Assistance Dogs.

DRESS CODE

Smart dress is encouraged for both restaurants. Gentlemen are required to wear a collared shirt, jacket and tie in the Club Restaurant & Lounge. If the appropriate clothing is not worn you will be asked to leave the enclosure.

In the Fairwood Brasserie, smart casual attire is acceptable, no trainers are permitted. Casual wear is permitted within the Sports Bar but we ask you to refrain from wearing club replica shirts at Chelmsford City Racecourse. Shirts must be worn at all times. Tailored shorts are acceptable for general admission only, but no shorts are to be worn within the hospitality areas. No sports shorts or flip flops are permitted, along with no team shirts.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the event of an incident occurring which necessitates the partial or total evacuation of any area of the racecourse, announcements will be broadcast over the public address system. Our staff, aided by the uniformed security will implement the carefully planned evacuation procedures and undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety. It is essential and a requirement that you follow their instructions. If you are able please take your belongings with you and proceed as directed out of the area as quickly and quietly as possible. These are just precautionary notes and we trust the procedures will not be required. However, please remember in the event of a partial or total evacuation of your area to:

refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason to do so. We operate a zero tolerance policy at Chelmsford City Racecourse, anyone acting in an inappropriate manor will be removed from the racecourse and refused re-entry.

WIFI

WIFI is available at Chelmsford City Racecourse and can be accessed on the ‘PUBLIC’ network. No password is required.

The following terms and conditions apply here at Chelmsford City Racecourse

1. All persons visiting Chelmsford City Racecourse and its associated properties are admitted subject to these Regulations and to the “Rules of Racing” that apply to all licensed racecourses across the UK.

2. Chelmsford City Racecourse reserves the right to vary its regulations without prior notice.

3. Chelmsford City Racecourse reserves the right to search racegoers and/or their bags. Any sharp objects or potentially destructive possessions will be confiscated.

4. All coaches may be searched for security reasons. It is the responsibility of all coach and group coordinators to ensure that each member of their party is aware individually of our Regulations.

5. Racegoers are not permitted to enter areas or buildings associated with the running of the event and any other area, building or section of a building where restricted access is signed. These include, among others, the Weighing Room complex, data collection areas, the Race-day stables, the horsebox park, the officials’ car parks, the Saddling Boxes, the Parade Rings, the Winners Enclosure and the Broadcast and Media Offices.

6. Entry to the racecourse is restricted to persons of over 18 unless accompanied by an adult. Persons aged 16 and under may only enter the Parade Ring (if holding an appropriate Owners badge) with an adult, and no-one of 12 years of age and under may enter the Parade Ring or Winners Enclosure in any circumstances.

7. Chelmsford City Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or eject any race-goer whose conduct is unacceptable or compromises the safety of race-goers, participants and horses. There will be no refunds for day tickets or annual badges and season tickets when the holder has been asked to leave in these circumstances.

8. Annual badges will be numbered and are non-transferable. We reserve the right to request secondary identification material from annual badge and season-ticket holders.

9. No refunds will be given for badges, tickets or pro rata amounts of annual memberships and season tickets that are purchased but not used, except if racing is abandoned in the circumstances detailed below.

10. Chelmsford City Racecourse may abandon racing when directed by the British Horseracing Authority, the police or emergency services, or in any emergency or other exceptional circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If racing is abandoned, day ticket refunds will be applied as follows: Abandonment before completion of the first race full refund; Abandonment up to the third race 50%; Abandonment other than as above no refund. REFUNDS CANNOT BE PROCESSED ON RACEDAYS. Advance tickets will be automatically refunded via the original payment method. Tickets bought on the day should be posted with any receipts to: Accounts Department, Chelmsford City Racecourse, Great Leighs, Chelmsford, ESSEX, CM3 1QP and should be received within 28 days from the race meeting. Hospitality clients should telephone Chelmsford City Racecourse directly on 01245 360300. Only valid betting badge-holders occupying an authorised pitch may lay bets. Any unauthorised bookmakers will be ejected.

11 Mobile phones or any other communications device must not be used whilst on the racecourse to communicate with anyone outside the racecourse for the purpose of, or in connection with, any betting. This includes in-running back/lay betting.
