Gentlemen’s Night Saturday 24th September 2022 Official Programme £3.00

Welcome to

Gentlemen’s Evening at Chelmsford City Racecourse

In our more relaxed world, most of us get few opportunities to wear more formal clothing, whether that be a suit and tie for the men or a beautiful dress for the ladies, but today is when not only the gentlemen but also the ladies can put on their finery, come to the races and show the world how stylish and sophisticated they can be.

We have a fantastic evening of racing for you with eight races and the various handicaps look highly competitive, so good luck finding the winner of those. The two year old maidens at this time of year are always interesting contests, so come down to the paddock and make your selection from there.

As soon as the racing is over Chris Moyles will present a live DJ set from the front of the grandstand. Chris made his name, presenting the breakfast show on Radio 1 but has diversified into various other areas since those days, including charity fundraising, film voice work and television. He also now presents his own show on Radio X. He is renowned for his audience participation and his sharp sense of humour, so this will be a show not to be missed.

Have a lovely evening.

For more information about any of these events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

PALACE VIEW ran a fine race to finish third at Kempton on debut earlier this month, giving the impression that this extra furlong should be well within his grasp. The son of Dark Angel could prove hard to beat today with improvement likely Almutawakel was a beaten favourite at Epsom when last seen but is worth forgiving and could bounce back. Sir Mark Prescott won this race last year and relies on Blindedbythelights this time around.

This drop in trip and the application of a first-time visor may see DAMASCUS FINISH get off the mark at the 17th time of asking having finished fifth over three furlongs further here last month. The Mad Monk won twice earlier in the year and he’s steadily to dropped to what looks like a winnable mark again. The drop in distance appeared to suit Glencoe Boy last time and he’s not easily dismissed.

He was slowly away on that occasion and is now 6lb better off with that same rival for a three-length defeat last month. Meishar has some smart Irish form in the book and is interesting making his first start for Jane Chapple-Hyam.

PLAY SMARTER

With BADRI’s latest effort at Newcastle easily excused (going well when no room from 2f out), Ruth Carr’s charge is fancied to resume his progress and notch a third win in his last 5 outings. Quest For Fun is another whose last couple of efforts can have a line put through them so he may emerge as the main danger, while Meishar is an interesting runner on first outing for new connections.

TIMEFORMVIEWDownin looks set to be popular after winning here nine days ago, but a 4lb rise and a drop in distance could make life tougher for the daughter of Pivotal. SHAMSHON has been running well on turf of late and the veteran returns to the all-weather 8lb lower than when last seen here in April, so he may be worth chancing. CITY SELECTIONS

Blairlogie gained a deserved first win after 32 attempts last time and the Laura Mongan-trained inmate is one to consider again this evening. That said, LETTER OF THE LAW improved for a first-time visor at Chepstow 13 days ago and he could benefit from this extra distance. Jeanette May is another with valid claims based on her second over C&D two starts ago, while Hammock should not be underestimated.
