Evening Racing Thursday 9th December 2021

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM EVERYONE AT CHELMSFORD CITY RACECOURSE. We have a fantastic evening of racing in store for you today with 109 runners across our eight race card – we had 136 horses declared but 27 were eliminated. The evening kicks off with an interesting contest for two-yearolds, which looks as if the finish will be disputed between Antiphon and Dukedom. Antiphon is owned by George Strawbridge, who has won almost every big race around the world, most recently with his six-time Group 1 winning filly, Moonlight Cloud but I think that we may have a royal winner in Dukedom tonight. Hats off for the Queen! Our feature race, the £19,000 Betsi Handicap, looks a tough race, as you would expect, but my vote goes to the Amanda Perrett-trained You’re Hired, who is bidding for a hat trick at CCR, off only 2lbs higher than his last win. May we respectfully request that you keep socially distanced tonight and wear your mask, whenever and wherever appropriate, and stay safe. Have a great evening and good luck finding some winners. Neil Graham Racing Director

CITY SELECTIONS Favourite backers are still to collect from DUKEDOM after being sent off the market leader on three of his four starts during his racing career. However, the son of Dubawi could find improvement on his all-weather debut with a first-time visor now applied and he appears to have found an ideal opportunity to break his maiden tag in this contest. Be Glorious commands respect after her latest C&D success but she could be vulnerable under a 7lb penalty, while the consistent Antiphon is unlikely to be far away. DUKEDOM

PLAY SMARTER

DUKEDOM doesn’t look progressive but he’s the marginal form pick and a visor might eke a bit more out of him, so he gets the nod to prevail at the likely expense of Antiphon, who was just touched off at Wolverhampton last time. Aries Lad is the pick of the newcomers.

CITY SELECTIONS BERRY QUICK caught the eye when making late headway to finish third at Kempton last month. The son of Fast Company could find improvement now returning to this longer trip and he is able to compete off the same mark here. Homemade Andrea has claims if bouncing back to the form of her penultimate start when winning at Wolverhampton but she has to overcome a wide draw, while Copper Mountain and The Ormer Gatherer are considered in this open affair. Plenty with chances and STORM ASSET gets the nod after catching the eye over 6f here last time. He was given plenty to do and whilst he did hang a bit, he looked to finish with plenty in the tank. He should appreciate the step up in trip and go close today. Homemade Andrea has to be respected back on the all-weather. Copper Mountain has solid claims too.

PLAY SMARTER

SAMPHIRE COAST hinted at a revival last time at Kempton and he’s dropped to a very handy mark. He isn’t the force he was a couple of years ago but should be able to capitalise off this sort of rating. Legende D’Art has been a model of consistency here of late and he’ll be a threat. Late Arrival isn’t out of it either.

CITY SELECTIONS UNITED FRONT may not be the most prolific, but the form of his most recent win at Lingfield has a strong look to it, and a 5lb penalty for that success may not be enough to prevent him from following up. A course winner back in April, he can get better of the unexposed Mobashr, who makes his handicap debut after an impressive display at Lingfield last month. You’re Hired must also enter calculations, having won his last two at the track, while Headingley is not to be underestimated either. UNITED FRONT

SWORD EXCEED caught the eye at Lingfield last time after returning from a break and he should be a bit sharper tonight. He looks the one to beat. Hope Springs is running well and she looks to be in the mix. Bungledupinblue is a solid each-way proposition too. Woo Woo would be of interest if there is market support following an interesting yard move.

CITY SELECTIONS MAHARASHTRA improved for the step back up in trip when breaking his maiden over C&D in September. He won readily on that occasion, when eased down at the line, and a 2lb rise in the weights might not be enough to prevent another bold showing. This is a better race, though, so it would be foolish to rule out Al Gaiya, who won at Kempton 10 days ago. Captain St Lucifer can also make his presence felt. MAHARASHTRA

RECUERDAME is on a career low mark and he shaped well over C&D last month to suggest he isn’t far away from winning. Proven over C&D, he makes most appeal in a trappy event. Al Gaiya has to be on the shortlist following her Kempton victory. Trooper Cooper may improve significantly on handicap debut and market support would be significant.

CITY SELECTIONS MAYSONG is well handicapped on old form and is lightly raced for his new yard. His latest second over C&D is form that reads well in the context of this race and connections have booked one of the best amateur jockeys around, so he ticks plenty of boxes. Engrave has been knocking on the door in recent outings and would be no surprise winner, while Mc’ted also boasts claims.

MAYSONG looked ready to strike when second over C&D last time and with Simon Walker taking the ride, he looks the one to side with. Engrave saves her best for this venue and she’ll be a big danger.
