Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Sandown Park is delighted to be able to welcome our new Horses for Courses Ambassador, Step Back to the racecourse here today.
Owned by the Cracker and Smodge Partnership and trained by the late Mark Bradstock and his wife Sara, Step Back was a brilliant racehorse and is now thoroughly enjoying his life at Sara’s yard, in the care of Lily Bradstock their daughter, at the age of 14.
Step Back was acquired from the point-to-pointing scene and made his rules debut at Ludlow on 22nd February 2017 – a maiden hurdle which he won readily He would take in only one more run that season, at the Cheltenham Festival where he finished 9th to Penhill in the Albert Bartlett.
Nearly a year off the track was ended on 2nd February 2018 when the beautiful chestnut made his return to the track over fences at Chepstow. 2nd in that race, followed by a 3rd here at Sandown Park and a win at Fakenham set Step Back up for a tilt at one of our most prestigious races and one of the features on today’s card – the bet365 Gold Cup.
Jamie Moore, a hugely talented jockey who we are honouring here today before racing, was given the nod for the race and did not disappoint. Step Back was sent off a reasonably well fancied 7/1 chance. Taking up the lead after just the 5th fence the only horse that threatened to get close was Rock The Kasbah, but he came up short and could only spectate as Step Back ran away won by 13 lengths.
Whilst never quite hitting the same heights, he became a huge fan favourite in the race with a 3rd placed finish in 2019 and a 4th in 2022 behind Hewick. In between those runs, his ability took him to the cross-country at the Cheltenham Festival and also a spin around the Grand National in 2019 – not a bad CV!
Step Back won two races here at Sandown Park in total - the second being a leg of the Veteran’s Chase Series in 2020, but put in some herculean efforts to place on several occasions.
His most recent run was in a point-to-point at the end of 2023 and we are so grateful to the Bradstock family for allowing him to join us as our new ambassador.

DECLARED RUNNERS 10 2023: MEETING ABANDONED
Running for the first time since Gelding No 3, 5.
Stewards Note:
SERRIED RANKS: Following its run on 14/10/2023 it was reported that the horse returned lame.
MIAHARRIS: Following its run on 13/10/2023 it was reported that the horse was short of room on the run-in.
Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Sports Coach (IRE), 11-2 Tan Rapido (GB), 6-1 Miaharris (GB), 13-2 Rogue Enforcer (GB), 12-1 Serried Ranks (GB), 14-1 Sommelier (GB), Hedge Fund (IRE), Equity Law (GB), 16-1 Dark Vintage (IRE), 20-1 Shagraan (IRE)
SPORTS COACH boasts a progressive profile and his stable can do no wrong at present, so he’s fancied to land a hat-trick switched to handicaps after 4 months off Tan Rapido might have been let in lightly off 82, so he’s regarded as the main threat ahead of Serried Ranks.

Always a very useful 3-y-o handicap An opening mark in the high 80s looks manageable for HAND OF GOD on the back of his taking Newmarket maiden success last autumn so he gets the vote under Ryan Moore. Cracking Gold, Cuban Tiger and Rocking Tree have all done well on AW this year and are feared most in that order
When a racehorse falls teams of dedicated vets will respond in less than 60 seconds. Through continuous investment in safety and facilities we’ve reduced the number of horses that fall by a third and fatalities to 0.2% of 90,000 yearly runners. And because every horse matters, we’re relentless in our efforts to reduce this even further. To find out more visit horsepwr.co.uk

NOSTRUM: Following its run on 26/8/2023 it was reported that the horse returned lame.
Probable S.P’s: 5-2 Nostrum (GB), 3-1 Charyn (IRE), 7-2 Lord North (IRE), 7-1 Poker Face (IRE), 8-1 Flight Plan (GB), 33-1 Witch Hunter (FR), 40-1 Pogo (IRE)
NOSTRUM has looked like a potential star at times in his short careerto date, including when scoring on return as a 3-y-o, so Sir Michael Stoute’s colt is fancied to repeat the feat at the expense of Lord North, who was unable to land a fourth successive victory in the Dubai Turf at Meydan last month but rates a major player with Buick on board for the first time. Charyn was impressive at Doncaster last month, so he’s another who shouldn’t be far away, too.
The bet365 Classic Trial has, over the years, proven to be a happy hunting ground for some of the shining lights in Flat racing. The one mile and two furlong race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest that provides the perfect stepping stone for major races later in the season, including the Derby at neighbouring Epsom Downs in June.
Some notable names from the races recent history include Western Hymn, Midterm, Cunco, Alenquer and Westover last year Midterm was a regally bred son of Galileo and Midday, both outstanding Group 1 winners in their own right, and looked a very promising prospect when winning the race in 2016.
Another notable name you may recognise, Adayar, who finished half a length behind Alenquer in this race before going on to win the 2021 Derby just 6 weeks later.
Cunco was another notable winner due to his breeding. He was Frankel’s first ever winner as a Sire and carried a huge amount of expectation into his career. His most notable win was the bet365 Classic Trial itself. He would only go on to race once more in the UK before retiring to stud himself
The most successful winner came in 2022 in the form of Westover. Trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Rob Hornby, the son of Frankel had a very good two year old career before coming to Sandown Park as a three year old in 2022. After winning the bet365 Classic Trial by a small margin, he went on to run a huge race in the Derby at Epsom, finishing third to Desert Crown before going even better in the Irish equivalent and bagging a Classic. His return as a four year old last year also saw him finish second in the Dubai Sheema Classic, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but a trip to Saint Cloud proved fruitful with a victory in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
Having lost the race in 2023 due to unsuitable ground, we look forward to this year’s renewal, with a field of nine going to post. The Godolphin-owned Arabian Crown is one to watch after a fantastic juvenile campaign in 2023.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and already holding an entry into the Betfred Derby, he’s the one to watch.

SECRET SATIRE was much improved from her debut when winning at Lingfield in October and, with this further step up in trip promising to suit, she is taken to make a winning return. She can get the better of Beeley, who shaped well on her first outing and also holds an entry in the Oaks, while newcomer Siyola could be capable of playing a part.
