JUMP FINALE

Where Champions Are Crowned
SATURDAY 27 APRIL
OFFICIAL RACECARD - £5

WELCOME TO
Welcome toSandown Park Racecourse tohelp us celebrate the official end of the 2023/24 Jump Racing Season at what is shaping up to be a hugely exciting bet365 Jump Finale meeting.
Today marks Sandown Park’s 149th birthday, with us first racing on 22nd April 1875 with this fixture. I would like to take this opportunity to thank bet365, who have been our generous sponsor for many years. Not only do bet365 contribute to our prize money fund with a huge £675,000 on offer today, but they have also been key in making our site look as good as it does, for which we are very grateful.
It is hard to establish whether it is the on or off-track action which is more exciting today. The team are excited to be staging the much-anticipated El Fabiolo vs Jonbon rematch in the bet365 Celebration Chase, but we also have the drama of the Champion Trainer and Jockeys Awards both still being live championships. As the stats stand going into today, there is everything to play for. The standings below are correct as of this card going to print.
Champion Trainer
1st Willie Mullins - £3,105,966
2nd Dan Skelton - £2,917,288
3rd Paul Nicholls - £2,858,820
Champion Jockey
1st Harry Cobden - 162
2nd Sean Bowen - 156
Before the Champions are declared and the trophies handed out, our Chairman Nick Mustoe will be awarding our annual Sandown Park Special Award for positive contribution to our sport. Two jockeys stood out for us this year, both having to step-back from the jobs they have loved due to medical advice Then another fantastic jockey entered the fray when calling time on his career at Cheltenham just last week As such, none of this trio received a ‘send-off’ and so we shall give it to them today. I would like the crowd to go wild, when we award the Sandown Park Special Award to Aidan Coleman, Jamie Moore and Paddy Brennan, for their contribution to British Jump Racing, and for giving us all so much enjoyment.
If you still have energy for more, there is an after party to end the season in style in the Esher Hall (underneath the Main Grandstand), where you can party into the evening with the Chip Shop Boys
I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park today and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

TO THE WIRE: MULLINS VS SKELTON

The Jump trainers’ championship is still up for grabs today with the two main protagonists being Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton.
Mullins, who is aiming to be the first Irish-based handler to win the championship since Vincent O’Brien 70 years ago, is set to saddle nine runners across the card while Skelton has five.
Despite saddling lessthan 30winners intotal inthe UK in 2023/24, Mullinswas leading trainer at The Cheltenham Festival with nine victories, which included the Unibet Champion Hurdle with State Man and the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup with Galopin Des Champs.
At the same meeting Skelton saddled four winners, headed by Protektorat in the Ryanair Chase.
What propelled Mullins to the head ofthe table was success in Britain’s richest Jump race, the £1-million Randox Grand National, at Aintree a fortnight ago, with I Am Maximus.
Mullins explained: “We had been looking at the trainers’ championship for a few weeks’ before the Grand National and I said if we are lucky enough to win it then we would be in with a shout.
“We therefore entered a bigger team than normal for Aintree, and it turned out well with I think four Grade Ones and the Grand National. I then said to the team this is a once in a lifetime chance – I wasn’t born when Vincent won it - and we will throw everything at it. We might get a taste for it and this whets the appetite.
“But as we saw the other night with Manchester United and Coventry, you can’t count your chickens – you just have to go through and keep playing.
“We had a way better time at Ayr than I thought, which was unbelievable and has made this week easier. Hopefully it will work out on Saturday for us.”

CHAMPION OWNER
PROFILE: The famous green and gold silks of JP McManus are synonymous with Jump racing across the UK and Ireland. Carried into the winner’s enclosure by some of racing’s greatest talents, it’s hard not to spot the silks somewhere on a racecard every day across the country. The 2023/24 season has been no different for JP McManus with over 60 winners and £2,500,000+ in prize money, no doubt bolstered by I Am Maximus’ victory in the Randox Grand National – JP’s third win in the race. This year will see him win for the eight successive season, the 16th time this century in Britain, setting a record that will take some surpassing in the future.
£2,558,645
GB JUMPS, CURRENT SEASON, APR 2023 - APR 2024
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON
Where else to start than the 2024 Randox Grand National winner I Am Maximus. The eight-year-old capped off a fine season which also included successes in the Drinmore and Bobbyjo chases, both at Fairyhouse, by putting in a gutsy performance to win the National.

It was another great season for Jonbon as the gelding bested Edwardstone to win the Cheltenham Chase and the Tingle Creek. A surprise second in the Clarence House Chase followed but a tremendous performance in the Melling atAintree followed and he lines up forthe Celebration Chase here today.
COBDEN VS BOWEN: THE RUN IN

This time of year is the time for champions to step forward. The best of the best find that last piece of energy to lift themselves up, over and above all the others. Much like the Premier League title battle, this year’s Jockey Championship has ebbed and flowed endlessly around every corner, and it has left two remarkable athletes fighting out for the title.
At the time of writing, both Harry Cobden and Sean Bowen still have live chances of taking home what will be their first Champion Jockey trophy. McCoy, Johnson, Hughes, Scudamore, Dunwoody, Francome and more – whoever takes home that trophy is amongst an elite list of names who were at the top of their game.
For a long while it looked like this would be Sean’s season. He raced out of the blocks into a very strong early lead and surpassed the 100 winners for the season mark back in November. Just when he thought things couldn’t get any better, he then bagged the rearranged Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle here at our Tingle Creek meeting in December aboard Not So Sleepy. However, Sean’s impressive run was soon to be curtailed as injury struck after a heavy fall on Boxing Day left him with a knee injury. The door was open, and Harry Cobden surged through it.
When Sean returned to the saddle in mid-February, Harry had completely eroded his lead after a blistering turn of form across the time that Sean was out. The lead had stood as high as 49 at one point, so Cobden’s feat to wipe out that lead is not to be understated. This was now very much a live championship
The second half of the season has very much seen Harry Cobden in the ascendancy Grade 1 victories came from Pic D’Orhy and Captain Teague, as well as the impressive Stay Away Fay winning the Grade 2 Esher Novices Chases here at the Tingle Creek meeting. A Cheltenham Festival winner also came in the form of Monmiral in the Pertemps Final.
Neither of them deserves to be the runner up, both of them will deserve to lift the trophy. Only one can – who will it be?
PATRICK WADGE

CHAMPION CONDITIONAL
PROFILE: A season to remember for Patrick Wadge as he becomes the latest Champion Conditional. His role as conditional for Lucinda Rusell has proved fruitful, with wins aboard horses such as Apple Away, who gave him a memorable first win in listed company despite nearly being unseated at the last hurdle. Aged just 21, Patrick has shown an abundance of potential this season with over 35 winners and no doubt will have many more big seasons to come.
MONEY
£221,082 FROM WINS
GB JUMPS, CURRENT SEASON, APR 2023 - APR 2024
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON
Czech Her Out has been a regular ride for Patrick this season. The duo got off to a great start at Perth, when taking a Class 4 handicap They went onto score again in the Seafield Trophy Mares Hurdle at the Scottish Grand National Meeting at Ayr, proving fartoo much fortheir rivals.

AppleAwaygavePatrickhisfirstListedsuccess at Doncaster in the tail end of last season but the pair teamed up once again this season in the Grade 2 Trustatrader Hampton Novices’ Chase at Warwick in January to great effect. Racing prominently throughout, they picked up a very strong second.

Racing Post host their annual jumps horse of the year award and this year we’ve had some real stars, so lets take a look at the contenders
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS
We knewhe was good last year, but this year?
This year, he’s been sensational After an average seasonal reappearance in the John Durkan, any doubters were soon silenced as the eight-year-old’s 23 length victory in the SavillsChaseatLeopardstownsawhimreturn towinningforminthemostemphaticfashion.

On the road to Cheltenham, once again Willie Mullins targeted the Irish Gold Cup and once again Galopin Des Champs made all to take the win. Though his race couldn’t have been more different to that of 2023, the outcome remained the same: Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, further etching his name into the history books by joining the elite equine club of back-to-back Cheltenham Gold Cup winners. Will he make it 3 in 2025? He’ll take some beating.
STATE MAN
Since November 2022, the Willie Mullins trained State Man has run in 10 Grade 1’s; he’s won 9 of them – including all 4 of his runs in the 23/24 season The seven-yearold son of Doctor Dino has been brilliant. He dominated the Irish season openers, clear by 5 lengths in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown, 3 ¼ lengths clear from his second placed stablemate Impaire Et Passe (the eventual Aintree Hurdle winner) in the Matheson Hurdle at Leopardstown and a comfortable 5 ½ length defence for a second Irish Champion Hurdle. Though a rematch with Constitution Hill in the Champion Hurdle was not to be, State Man got the job done Sitting nicely until the last, he quickened past Irish Point to win by 1 ¼ lengths He may not be the flashiest but when the going gets tough, so does State Man, and what more could we ask for?
JONBON

It’s safe to say the latter half of the 2023/24 seasonhasnotbeeneasyforNickyHenderson, but the ever-dependable Jonbon will have given him reason to smile. Starting his season strongatCheltenhamwithacommanding9½ length victory over Edwardstone, it was back to happy hunting ground here at Sandown Park for the JP McManus owned eight-yearoldintheTingleCreekChase.NicoDeBoinville was up in the irons as Jonbon put in a brilliant performance, in conditions that were far heavier than ideal, to power up the hill 2 ¾ lengths clear of Edwardstone once again Though disappointing he missed the QueenMotherChampionChase,Jonbonwasbacktohisbestwhensteppingupin trip on day two of the Grand National meeting, taking the Grade 1 Melling Chase It was a brave performance from a horse who has been so consistent throughout his career, and we look forward to seeing what he can do next
SIR GINO
Nicky Henderson certainly knows how to pick a 2-mile hurdler, and the French-bred Sir Gino is the latest superstar making a name for himself. The four-year-old son of It’s Gino made his debut on a British racecourse in December, having run, and won, once in a listed race at Auteuil as a three-year-old Sent off as the odds-on favourite, Sir Gino made light work of the field, powering clear during the closing stages to a commanding victory of 15 lengths Another impressive win on Festival Trial’s Day made him the ante-post favourite for the JCB Triumph Hurdle before he was disappointingly ruled out of the race. He more than made up for that disappointment when making it four from four wins in the Grade 1 Boodles Anniversary 4-Y-O Hurdle at Aintree. With that performance, Sir Gino puts himself at the top of his generation and will undoubtedly be one to watch out for in the future
I AM MAXIMUS

It would be impossible to have a Horse of the Year vote without having the Randox Health Grand National winner in here! The biggest race in our calendar deserves a winner suitable for the occasion and I Am Maximus fits the bill after a stunning season saw him go from strength-to-strength An Irish Grand National win already under his belt in 2023, big staying prizes were the aim in the 2023/24 season A win in the Grade 1 Drinmore Novices Chase was a fine way to start the season. He followed up with a 31L defeat in the Savills Chase at Christmas but the winner that day was Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs so the result was better than it looked on paper. A third to the same horse in the Irish Gold Cup was followed by a win, down in grade, in the Bobbyjo Chase. All eyes were now on the big one – The Grand National He didn’t disappoint having been ridden cautiously and tactically by Paul Townend, with plenty left in the tank to defeat his rivals comfortably up the run in A horse with exceptional ability and class, and a worthy candidate in this year’s vote

STEP BACK: SANDOWN PARK HORSES FOR COURSES AMABASSADOR

Sandown Park is delighted to be able to welcome our new Horses for Courses Ambassador, Step Back to the racecourse here today.
Owned by the Cracker and Smodge Partnership and trained by the late Mark Bradstock and his wife Sara, Step Back was a brilliant racehorse and is now thoroughly enjoying his life at Sara’s yard, in the care of Lily Bradstock their daughter, at the age of 14.
Step Back was acquired from the point-to-pointing scene and made his rules debut at Ludlow on 22nd February 2017 – a maiden hurdle which he won readily He would take in only one more run that season, at the Cheltenham Festival where he finished 9th to Penhill in the Albert Bartlett.
Nearly a year offthe track was ended on 2nd February 2018 when the beautiful chestnut made his return to the track over fences at Chepstow. 2nd in that race, followed by a 3rd here at Sandown Park and a win at Fakenham set Step Back up for a tilt at one of our most prestigious races and one of the features on today’s card – the bet365 Gold Cup.
Jamie Moore, a hugely talented jockey who we are honouring here today before racing, was given the nod for the race and did not disappoint. Step Back was sent off a reasonably well fancied 7/1 chance. Taking up the lead after just the 5th fence the only horse that threatened to get close was Rock The Kasbah, but he came up short and could only spectate as Step Back ran away won by 13 lengths.
Whilst never quite hitting the same heights, he became a huge fan favourite in the race with a 3rd placed finish in 2019 and a 4th in 2022 behind Hewick. In betweenthoseruns,hisabilitytookhimtothecross-countryattheCheltenham Festival and also a spin around the Grand National in 2019 – not a bad CV!
Step Back won two races here at Sandown Park in total - the second being a leg of the Veteran’s Chase Series in 2020, but put in some herculean efforts to place on several occasions.
His most recent run was in a point-to-point at the end of 2023 and we are so grateful to the Bradstock family for allowing him to join us as our new ambassador.
You can see Step Back today on the summer lawn at 11.55am where you can get up close and give him a pat, in the parade ring for our Parade of Champions and also leading out the runners for today’s bet365 Gold Cup.

PLAY SMARTER
STEEL ALLY pulled clear with last week’s Cheltenham winner Doyen Quest on his Newbury handicap debut last month and might prove the answer to this ultra-competitive opener As Maasai Mara gained his 2 Flat wins in blinkers it’s possible he could pull out more with headgear on forthe first time over hurdles so he’s second choice. Secret Squirrel, Cannock Park, Court In The Act and Dan Skelton’s Be Aware are a few of many others who could have a say.

THE bet365 OAKSEY CHASE
RACE DESCRIPTION:
Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up here. Initially, the weights in this two mile, six and a half furlong steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or 2 success.
GRADE 2 RUN OVER TWO MILES, SIX FURLONGS AND 164 YARDS
21 FENCES TO BE JUMPED
LASTYEAR’S WINNER HEWICK
Hewick bounced back well from his heavy fall 43 days priory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to win in fine style here under Rachael Blackmore. The John Joseph Hanlon trained gelding disputed the lead from early on and despite making a mistake at the 13th he kept on well in the run-in to win by four lengths ahead of First Flow.

HITMAN has produced his high-class form only once this term but he’s favoured by the weights here and this doesn’t look a strong renewal. The Real Whacker has been rather over faced this season and will find this assignment much more realistic, while the prolific Easy Game can be expected to bounce back in first-time headgear but does have to give weight all round.

BET365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE
As we reach the end of the National Hunt season, all eyes turn to Sandown Park and one of the biggest Jump racing meetings of the year – the bet365 Jump Finale. This fixture is the traditional end point for the Jump season and as such we get to celebrate everything that has taken place in our current season and look forward to what the next has in store
Our feature race is the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap chase, run over three miles and five furlongs. The race was first run here in its current format in 1957 and is a race steeped in history and heritage, much like the fixture it takes place at.
The first winner of the race was Much Obliged in 1957. Back then, the race was known as the Whitbred Gold Cup due to its sponsorship by Whitbred Brewers.
From there the race has grown into the prestigious handicap that we see today with horses such as the mighty Arkle, Mill House, Diamond Edge, Desert ‘Dessie’ Orchid and Tidal Bay all putting in tremendous performances to lift the trophy. NoperformancewasmorespectacularthanthatofArklein1965 Despitehislofty weight of 12st 7lbs (a weight not seen today on course) he took down a talented field in what is defined as one of the greatest weight-carrying performances in racing history.

The race’s most successful trainer to date is Fulke Walwyn who has won the race seven times. His first winner was in the second running of the race courtesy of Taxidermist in 1958 before, in 1967, Mill House produced another stunning weight-carrying performance off of 11st 11lbs to win the race This would be Mill House’slastmajorwinonaracecourseashewasretiredthefollowingseasondue to consistent injury issues.
Itisimpossibletoflickthroughthehistoryofthebet365GoldCupwithouttaking a moment to talk about racing’s beloved ‘Dessie’ Desert Orchid His beautiful white-like appearance ensured he was a fan favourite throughout the 1980s and a win here in 1988 under top weight only further enhanced his reputation as a true great of Jumps racing. He would go on to win four King George VI Chases, a Tingle Creek Chase and, of course, the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989.

Recent years have also seen some memorable renewals Tidal Bay was another hugely popular horse among racing fans, and he was yet another horse to win this race off of top weight under the guidance of Daryl Jacob in 2012 His uncharacteristically high head carriage meant that he was a challenging ride, but his abundance of talent was more than enough to compensate.
Father and son duo, Peter and Sean Bowen teamed up for a family affair in 2017 thanks to Henllan Harry and in 2022 Hewick took the short trip over the Irish Sea to plunder the race for his trainer Shark Hanlon. Hewick would go on to win both the American Grand National and the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase.
Last year’s emphatic winner Kitty’s Light lines up again today for Christian Williams, just two weeks on from a gallant fifth in the 2024 Randox Grand National A real fan favourite, will he become just the third horse to take backto-back wins in this race?
History tells us that this race can produce superstars and we wait with bated breath to see if another steps up to the mantle this year

THE bet365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE
RACE DESCRIPTION: This historic event is a handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards run over three miles, four and a half furlongs. Unlike most other handicaps there are no ratings restrictions here, so some classy performers may be tempted to take part in a race that has a rich history. However, the same principle of handicapping exists, so a horse officially rated 145 carries 5lb more a horse rated 140.
Scottish Grand National winner Kitty’s Light picked up the win in the 2023 running of this race for trainer Christian Williams in a very successful two weeks for the gelding. He had been on a real run of form and completed a hattrick of wins with this success. Ridden here by Jack Tudor he jumped well before keeping on strongly to hold off Moroder and take the win. Racing again this year, can he defend his crown?

PLAY SMARTER
Plenty with claims in a typically competitive renewal of this contest, including last year’s victor KITTY’S LIGHT, who boasts a tremendous record in marathon events and looks fairly treated in his bid for a repeat success. Last season’s Coral Gold Cup winner Le Milos has had a light campaign and lookswellhandicapped, whilstNickRockettremainswithpotentialandisthechoiceofPaulTownend. Kinondo Kwetu and Amirite will be suited by likely better ground and complete the shortlist.

LANGER DAN would, in all likelihood, have edged out Impaire Et Passe in the Aintree Hurdle had he not suffered interference on more than one occasion and he’s worth a chance to confirm that impression in what looks another fascinating encounter. The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment.
