We introduced musical entertainment a few years ago, to add to the fun and pleasure of Cartmel Races. My hope is that we deliver in harmony today!

We are indebted to all the participants of our sport, without whose commitment and hard work there would be no racing today. I offer especially sincere thanks to Owners and Trainers who support our race programme For our part, we are proud to continue with our offer of Summer Jumps fixtures, providing for those Yards and Owners who wish to keep an interest in the Sport all year round

We have several sponsors today – my thanks go to:

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

HADWINS MARES SERIES

Donald McCain is a perennial winner at Cartmel and the Cheshire trainer is well on course to claim the £1,000 bonus prize attached to the Hadwins Mares series at the track with two rounds now completed.

Titanium Moon, in the hands of three-time champion jockey Brian Hughes, ran out a convincing winner of the Hadwins Mares Novices Hurdle on Monday, storming past favourite Come On Du Berlais after jumping the last to win going away by 11 lengths

A decent performer on the Flat for David Loughnane last year, Titanium Moon only joined the McCain yard earlier this month and produced this

cracking performance on the heels of a highly promising second to All The Glory at Hexham

The win takes McCain on to 15 points already, three points clear of Alastair Ralph, who won the first round on Saturday and nine ahead of John McConnell and Fergal O’Brien, who share third place

McCain won the bonus last season without a winner, but by virtue of having runners in all six legs and collecting points for placed runs which eventually took him to the top of the leader board, so he is already setting a mighty challenge for all the other yards.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2023

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Championship and he is off to a flier again this year and with the experience of his first century of winners can be expected to maintain his challenge throughout the season

Line Of Descent gave him his first success of the evening when running out a seven lengths winner in the Champagne Louis Roederer Handicap Chase before the well-backed Post No Bills took the MUV Novices Limited Handicap, sticking on gamely to hold off Grey Skies up the long run-in. Hughes was on board Grey Skies, his second runner-up of the evening after Idealdes Villerets had been touched off by a neck by Special Rate and Thomas Dowson after trying to make all the running in the Racing Welfare Novices Hurdle His four points meant that Hughes was the only jockey to have scored points at all three days of racing this season

Sean Bowen followed up his seven-points haul on Spring Bank Holiday Monday with a double from just three rides on the Wednesday to shoot to the top of the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge title with a two point lead over Brian Hughes

Bowen, who rode his first winner at Cartmel, had his best ever season last year when he finished runner-up to Hughes in the race for the Jockeys

Richie McLernon has struck up a great partnership with Ben Haslam and is on the heels of the leaders with 10 points, while defending champion Charlotte Jones, who is bidding for a third successive title, is off and running albeit some way off the pace.

further runners over the next two days. McCain and local trainer James Moffatt are the only winners of the Challenge since it began 11 years ago

Milton Harris, who has made a brilliant return to the training ranks in the last couple of years, got his first points on the board in style with a first and last race 37.5-1 double through Appreciate in the Campbell and Rowley Conditional Jockeys Handicap and Pyramid Place in the Hales Of Cartmel Handicap Hurdle

His seven point haul on the day was matched by Philip Kirby, whose win with Special Rate in the Racing Welfare Novices Hurdle was supported by a couple of second places leaving him musing ‘it’s been a good night, but it could have been so much better!”

Middleham trainer Ben Haslam and perennial winner Donald McCain completed the opening May Bank Holiday meeting in joint top spot in the Cartmel Trainers Challenge after they both collected four points on the third and final day. With a 10-points haul, they edged ahead of Irish trainer John McConnell, who had led following his opening day nine points salvo only to have no

Harris and Kirby now share fourth place with George Bewley, who wasn’t able to add to his points haul from the first two days, just ahead of Sam England Defending champion James Moffatt had a disappointing three days, but did open his points account when Yukon deadheated for second place behind Appreciate and City Vaults picked up third behind Special Rate.

Race Description This is a two mile, one furlong, 46 yard handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. PLAY SMARTER

RHODIA hasn’t pulled up any trees in a handful of novice events in this sphere but is appealing now making the switch to handicap company off what, judged on his bumper form, is a potentially handy opening mark. With James King booked, Zamond is a big danger given the strength of his latest effort at Musselburgh and the fact that he was a C&D winner on his sole previous start here Fellow C&D winners Prime Time Lady and Calevade are also feared, in that order of preference

Race Description This is a three mile, one furlong, 107 yard handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

THE ST MARY’S HOSPICE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5)

for five yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £6850 Owners Prize Money. 1st £2767, 2nd £1383, 3rd £692, 4th £346, 5th £173. (Penalty Value £3617.48)

2m 5f 34y

Race Description The third race of the day is a two mile, five furlongs, 34 yard handicap steeple chase that has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Race Description This is a three miles, 1 furltong, 107 yard handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, six furlongs 31 yard race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
