Good afternoon, and a very warm welcome to our Bank Holiday Family Day here at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.

Family days here are always a highlight of the season, and this afternoon we have a range of free activities in the Course Enclosure to keep younger racegoers entertained. From the bouncy castle, balloon modelling and face painting, to Punch & Judy, Magic Shows, Fire Juggling and Arts & Crafts… there’s plenty to enjoy alongside the racing.

We’re also pleased to be joined once again by Tom Roberts Jazz Band on the bandstand, be sure to head over and enjoy their performances throughout the day.

On the track, we look forward to a competitive card, including the feature race of the day, the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy at 3.15pm; a Listed contest with £40,000 in prize money up for grabs! We look forward to seeing who will claim their place on the roll of honour this afternoon, can Al Shaham repeat his Course & Distance win from The William Hill Gt St Wilfrid raceday last Saturday?

It’s remarkable how quickly the season has flown. After today, just two fixtures remain –tomorrow’s meeting and then our season finale, the ever-popular Theakston’s Beer Festival and Harvest Festival on Saturday 27th September. If you are coming on 27th please bring a donation of food or other items for Ripon Community House’s Food Bank.

We hope you have a wonderful afternoon with us.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

Having hit the frame at Beverley on both outings to date, DREAM MORE could be poised to open his account. Tim Easterby’s colt ticks plenty of the right boxes and he looks to hold the strongest form on offer Hear The Drums displayed more promise when finishing midfield in a 15-runner maiden at Thirsk recently and he may serve the most resistance to the selection, ahead of India Gold.

WIN: DREAM MORE

RACE 2

DANGER: HEAR THE DRUMS

Bearin Up caught the eye when finishing a never-nearer third over 5f at Beverley and, reverting to 6f, she is likely to have her supporters. However, CHALE CHALO has been given time to strengthen since a respectable sixth in a class 2 event at Ascot and he could prove too strong. Call Me By My Name may also feature if the application of a visor has the desired effect.

WIN: CHALE CHALO

RACE

3

RACE 4

BEARIN UP

Having been narrowly denied on her stable debut at Nottingham, compensation could be on the cards for FINAL SECRET. A similar performance is likely to see the Time Test filly go extremely close and she’s fancied to repel Memphis Rose, who posted a good second atTipperaryin Mayand isn’t taken lightlyon herfirst appearance forthe Michael Keady team. Spanish Rising is the pick of the remainder.

ROSE

Amorim got off the mark impressively at Windsor two starts ago, but he was well held when third of five at this level at Newbury last time. With that in mind, preference is for AL SHAHAM, who has won both starts over C&D well and the exciting son of Blue Point is likely to have more to offer Lam Yai edges out Saucy Jane to be the pick of the remainder

WIN: AL SHAHAM

RACE 5

DANGER: AMORIM

CAPITALGUARANTEE did not get the clearest of runs, but still managed to beat Barley over C&D nine days ago. A 2lb rise for that success is fair and the five-year-old is hard to oppose Barley also has to be noted, but a 1lb swing may not be enough for him to reverse the form. The shortlist is completed by Rogue Encore, Garden Oasis and Ey Up Its The Boss.

WIN: CAPITAL GUARANTEE DANGER: BARLEY

RACE

6

RACE 7

Another Baar and Canaria Queen have to be respected following recent victories, but theirnewmarks demand more ofthem. As a result, thevote goes toTHORNABYPEARL, who improved for a wind operation when winning at Hamilton a couple of weeks ago and a 4lb rise may underestimate him. Masterclass was second that day and is another with strong form claims.

DANGER: MASTERCLASS

Sassy Glory is consistent, but needs a change of fortune if she is going to break her maiden at the 22nd attempt Of slightly more appeal is TIBERIO FORCE, who was a close third in a handicap over C&D nine days ago. The six-year-old could be tough to overhaul now dropping into a classified stakes for the first time since he finished fourth in this last year Bebside and Arranmore are others for the shortlist.

WIN: TIBERIO FORCE

RACE 8

DANGER: SASSY GLORY

Having registered wins at Beverley and Pontefract before posting another good effort to finish second over1m4fat Catterick, STAR STARTand Charli Parkercould again form a successful partnership. Running off an unchanged rating, the son of U S Navy Flag boasts the most convincing recent form and has a live chance of notching back-to-back victories in this race Spartan Times and Blue Yonder are other key players

WIN: STAR START

DANGER: SPARTAN TIMES

WIN: THORNABY PEARL

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile and one furlong contest for those ages three, four and five-years-old only is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 53 to 72 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a one mile, one furlong classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.
