Donald McCain is a perennial winner at Cartmel and the Cheshire trainer is well on course to claim the £1,000 bonus prize attached to the Hadwins Mares series at the track with two rounds now completed.

Titanium Moon, in the hands of three-time champion jockey Brian Hughes, ran out a convincing winner of the Hadwins Mares Novices Hurdle on Monday, storming past favourite Come On Du Berlais after jumping the last to win going away by 11 lengths

A decent performer on the Flat for David Loughnane last year, Titanium Moon only joined the McCain yard earlier this month and produced this cracking performance on the heels of a highly promising second to All The Glory at Hexham

The win takes McCain on to 15 points already, three points clear of Alastair Ralph, who won the first round on Saturday and nine ahead of John McConnell and Fergal O’Brien, who share third place

McCain won the bonus last season without a winner, but by virtue of having runners in all six legs and collecting points for placed runs which eventually took him to the top of the leader board, so he is already setting a mighty challenge for all the other yards.
