Earlier this week, AscotRacecourse Supports celebrated the annual Racing Together Community Daywith acompanylitter pick in the local area –today, some of our volunteers will be presenting trophies to winning connections following The Racing Together Community DayAscotHandicap Stakes.Wealso hosted a ‘Community Tea’ in our ON 5Restaurant, inviting carers from across Windsor, Bracknell and Wokingham to enjoyanAscotafternoon tea. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of howlow their rating is.This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered adisadvantage.

We aredelightedtoannouncethe winners of ourRoyalAscotLocal SchoolsArt Competition which saw pupils aged 4-14 from arecord 26 local schools send in 1,300 entries.

Over 4,000 online votes were received and winningstudents won cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend on themselves.

Since 2018, this community project has provided children and schools in the local area with an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating acolourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents. Our new Ascot Racecourse Supports Ambassador, Hayley Turner, was also asked to pick her favourite which was Bella Bruce’s entry.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfareofhorses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improveour facilities on and off the track to ensureweprovide the very bestcareand attention for all participants.Nowhereis this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The keyelements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created asafer surface for the horses, wherepreviouslysome less experienced runners had occasionallyshied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfareprovision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016.Increased in size to accommodate largefield races more comfortably, the Unsaddling EnclosureLawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crownofanadjacent maturetree as well as arepositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specificallyqualified equine vets areon duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses.During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend acasualty generallywithin aminute –asfastasthe paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’stwo permanent veterinary boxesare supplemented with an X-Raymachine for the major meetings to assistwith swift diagnosis beforeadministration of treatment on site or anymovement necessary to equine hospitals. Thereare twoequine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascotinclude a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

On 8th May2024, AscotRacecourse celebrated the annual “Racing Together Community Day” –British Racing’s National DayofEmployeevolunteering across UK communities.For thesixth year,over55racing organisations took part with employees helping with foodbanks,litter picks, gardening and moreintheir local areas.

On the day, we were delighted to hosta “Carers in the Community”afternoon tea –giving those individuals who arecaring for aloved one in their home, an opportunity to enjoya well-earned afternoon to themselveswhilstbeing able to makefriends with others in asimilar situation. The carers were nominated by local NHS Trusts,surgeries and Alzheimer charities covering the areas of Maidenhead, Frimley,Reading, Wokingham and Shinfield.

Volunteers from the RCA(Racecourse Association) helped with proceedings and tea was enjoyedinour premier ON 5Restaurant giving attendees apanoramic viewofthe racecourse followedbyameet/greetwith our equine ambassador,Side Glance. HORSE WELFARE

At all meetings there is ateam of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend acasualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient acalm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around afallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:

a) Abandonment before the running of the first race –full refund.

b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later –50% refund

In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for arefund.
