CONFIDENT COMMUNICATORS
Empowering self-expression, inspiring talent
The Arts have been a major focus of the Collegiate curriculum since the school’s founding 60 years ago. Through language arts, performing arts, and visual arts, students learn how to express themselves while developing an appreciation for the world around them.
From our youngest students in the Early Childhood division through the Upper School, the Arts are incorporated into our day-to-day activities to support the development of critical thinking skills and appreciation for all forms of art.

PUBLIC Speaking
1 2 3 4
Great Beginnings Strong Foundations New Explorations Confident Application
From Show & Share Circles to Animal Habitat Reports, our youngest students are encouraged at an early age to discover the words to tell their own story to a small but captive audience.
Research reports on a favorite book, our country, an historical hero, and each child's family history result in memorable speeches performed in front of an audience of both peers and parents.
Whether sharing space exploration updates at a press conference or performing original two-person poems on the stage, students learn the important application of emotion and improvisation to their delivery.
From Debate & Forensics to Advanced Research classes, in depth Harkness discussions coupled with podium presentations provide students opportunities to artfully present original ideas and prepared speeches.

PERFORMING Arts
Vocal Music
With dedicated music teachers at every level, students learn to read music, sing in harmony, and perform in front of an audience. Spartans can be seen and heard performing all over the city of Wichita and beyond, from our young boy and girl choirs (Grades 4 through 6) through the Middle School mixed ensemble and finally to the Upper School Madrigals and Dynamics groups.
Instrumental Music
Beginning in 5th grade, students can elect to take instrumental music. Under the guidance of our talented teachers, students cultivate skill and technique while building creativity and confidence. Whether performing in the concert band, marching in the drumline, grooving in our jazz band, or rocking out in our modern band, students have the opportunity to discover unknown talents and passions.
Theater
Wichita Collegiate supports an active theater program with a foundation in improvisation, story study, and characterization. Major productions are staged each year for kindergartners, 1st graders, 4th graders, 5th & 6th graders, 7th & 8th graders, and the Upper School students. From lead performer to ensemble, from stage manager to crew, everyone has a chance to play a part in theater.
STUDIO Arts
Through our arts program, students are exposed to both contemporary and historical art, creating a foundation of both an appreciation for and interest in visual arts. Each year our talented artists are recognized for their work at the local, regional, and national level.
With multiple art studios across campus, students have the space to learn, create, and express. Exposure to photography, painting, fiber arts, and sculpture provide students the benefit of seeing art through multiple lenses. From learning the basic elements of art in our Lower School art studio to weaving their own textiles in Upper School, students are given the tools to find their own vision and cultivate their own talents.

COMPASSIONATE CITIZENS
Encouraging unity over uniformity
We believe graduating Spartans should have an understanding of who they are and how their service may transform our communities and our world. From our Positive Steps class in Lower School to our Leadership Academy in Upper School, each student is given the time and space to discover more about themselves while developing appreciation, respect, and empathy for the people and communities around them.
As we build students with an aim to lead and make a difference, we believe we are positively affecting the culture for now and in the future.

The Institute for Community Impact

Our Institute for Community Impact strives to take traditional community service initiatives a layer deeper. Preschool through high school students engage in conversations impacting people beyond our classroom walls. By discussing, researching, and experiencing topics as varied as hunger, veterans, and immigration, our students learn empathy, advocacy, and real-world problem solving while giving back to the larger community. The result is authentic, real-life experiences that build character and prepare our students to lead.

Community Helpers
Veterans
Each year students spend time learning about a new community. Through speakers, field trips, and service, students learn about the community's needs and how they can best support them. From pen pal letters to the elderly to harvesting greens to donate to a local shelter to knitting hats for the homeless, our students find authentic ways to support those in need, and in doing so, learn empathy and advocacy skills that will help them grow to be community leaders.
LEADERSHIP Opportunities
Collegiate Crew & Spartan Squad
Lower School students see the impact they can have on their community by taking the initiative to serve in various roles throughout the building, which promote both independence and collaboration. As members of the Spartan Squad, fourth graders serve as leaders for their younger peers as they find ways to build school spirit and serve the community.
House Captains & Student Council
As elected positions on campus, both House Captains in the Middle School and Student Council members in the Upper School represent their fellow students as they coordinate with the faculty and administration on planning fun traditions, supporting annual events, and determining policies that affect student life.
Junior & Senior Leadership Academy
This optional program for juniors and seniors provides students beyond the classroom opportunities to engage with leaders in the community's nonprofit, civic, and business sectors. Industry leaders share essential leadership traits, career details, and practical ways for students to grow in and apply their own leadership skills.

Learning Beyond our School Campus
As we prepare students for the world that awaits them, we believe it is essential to introduce them to a plethora of opportunities that extend beyond our campus. Field trips throughout our program provide students the chance to see, feel, and experience different cultures, traditions, and environments.
From local field trips across the city of Wichita to international trips, students' worlds and minds expand as our classrooms extend beyond the traditional confines of four walls.

Local Partnerships Overnight Travels Field Trips
The overarching efforts of our Institute for Community Impact coupled with the initiatives of our Lower School Green Team and Student Forum, a high school student club centered on service, have allowed us to develop many partnerships in the Wichita community. Whether partnering with the International Refugee Committee to tutor recent immigrants or connecting with local homeless shelters to provide fresh greens from our campus gardens, students find many ways to utilize their talents and resources to better serve the community.
From kindergartners exploring a local farm to fifth graders scuba diving to complete their astronaut "training," from second graders discovering historical Cowtown to fourth graders attending a naturalization ceremony at the courthouse, students of all ages are given the opportunity to extend their learning across the city of Wichita.
Whether an interdisciplinary unit studying the State Fair or an American history lesson on Eisenhower, Spartans also have the opportunity to travel the state of Kansas to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
A significant part of our program is our overnight field trips beginning in third grade. Often centered on team-building activities, these trips also connect to students' studies. For example, 6th graders travel to Camp Wood as they read the survival story Hatchet, while 8th graders drive to Branson, MO where they visit Silver Dollar City as part of their STEAM Park interdisciplinary unit. In addition, upperclassmen in the singing group Madrigals take a bi-annual trip to Italy, during which students perform in cathedrals as well as experience Italian history and culture.

Senior Send-Off
Though our seniors are the shining stars, Senior Send-Off is a fun day for EVERYONE! Each spring, our entire community gathers in the gym as seniors and their college destination are announced. Students cheer as they wave their handmade signs.
Community Impact Day
Each division selects a day in the school year to commit to learning about and serving the community. Many of the activities completed are a culmination of a year's long study on a particular issue or population.
Homecoming Picnic
Each fall Big Buddies (Middle and Upper School students) are paired up with Little Buddies (Early Childhood and Lower School students) for a picnic lunch and then an afternoon of games, activities, and of course, snow cones.
Grandparents Day
As we head into Thanksgiving Break, we welcome grandparents onto campus for a peek inside the day-to-day lives of their grandchildren. From concerts to speeches, the Spartan family never seems bigger than on Grandparents Day.

COURAGEOUS CONTRIBUTORS
Establishing grit by working through adversity
Echoing back to the historical Spartan, our students are known for their strong work ethic and grit. Students learn success through failure as they are given opportunities to try new things, question what has been, and hypothesize what could be. As they compete, whether individually or as a team, they also learn the importance of setting goals and working tirelessly towards achieving their lofty aspirations. Whether experimenting in the laboratory or competing on the field, this productive struggle establishes a foundation of resilience that students take with them long after they leave our campus.

The idea of earning respect and deserving success was ingrained in us at Collegiate. We knew that we had to prove ourselves to the faculty and to each other while we were at WCS. Probe Te Dignum! For me, that was a great motivator to keep up and thrive.
