President's Letter

With Ken Burns’ newest documentary series on the Revolutionary War coming to WCNY this month, this is a good time to refect on the founding of the United States and the fundamental principles that bond its citizens with its government.

The flm opens with a gorgeous scene of our region. It notes the role the Haudenosaunee Confederacy played in infuencing the Founding Fathers. The flm highlights ideas that came from the Long House and made their way to Independence Hall and into the U.S. Constitution. This is a theme that WCNY will be addressing in more detail next year as we produce a documentary on the Haudenosaunee infuence that complements some of the themes raised in the Burns’ series. The Burns’ documentary also addresses the roles of women and Black people in the Revolution, people whose stories have not always been fully explored by historians.

At its core, the flm establishes the citizen as the central force in maintaining the freedoms many in this country have, in the past, taken for granted: fundamental aspects of the American compact such as due process, rule of law and freedom of speech.

That call to citizenship is not just historical. It’s present and local. It’s what guides WCNY’s mission, and it’s what we see in action when we come together.

We recently had a chance to gather at the station with some of our members for a conversation on what the role of a public communications organization committed to serving the public interest should be in Central New York and The Mohawk Valley.

It was a fascinating conversation and one which a number of themes were consistent. Our members asked that we not fall complacent. You stressed the need to maintain our shared sense of truth and values, and to help teach differences in faith and diversity of perspective in a way that will facilitate tolerance that can provide a sense of community. A special emphasis was expressed regarding the need for public communications to connect with a younger generation, through school-based initiatives, children’s programming, and continued commitment the educational work our station was founded on.

This was an uplifting evening, inspiring and motivational, spirited, and heartfelt. As we prepare to watch Ken Burns’ new flm, we do so with gratitude for your support and with confdence in WCNY’s vision to inform, educate, and connect our region for generations to come.
