As the federal government bears down to eliminate funding for public media, this is a crucial time to remind ourselves what’s at stake.
Along with other stations across the country, WCNY plays a vital role in informing, educating, and engaging communities. Throughout its history, public media has faced threats to its federal support, but none as serious as the one we face today. As I write this, the executive branch has asked Congress to rescind more than one billion dollars appropriated for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. While WCNY is better positioned than most to withstand such cuts, it is only because of your support.
Make no mistake: cuts to federal funding would have real consequences. There will be sacrifices in the scope of programming we can offer. But because of your ongoing commitment, we remain steadfast in our mission to deliver the trusted news, educational content, and cultural programming that our region deserves.
Today, WCNY is more than a broadcaster. We are a classroom, a convener, a platform for local voices, and a partner in progress. We are a place where children learn to read, teens explore career paths, and adults gain new skills through lifelong learning. If federal funding is eliminated, the station will feel the impact. Yet we are resolved not to retreat from our commitment to serving the people of Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, and the Finger Lakes.
WCNY is a community-owned and community-operated media organization. We operate in partnership with the very people we serve, delivering critical communication services that matter.
Thank you for making WCNY part of your world and for helping us serve the region we all call home. Most of all, thank you for standing with WCNY and with everyone who relies on public media to learn, grow, and be heard.
You can reach out to your representatives at protectmypublicmedia.org to let them know that public media is a resource that you, your family, and friends value and want to preserve.

Chairs & Umbrellas
Sometimes it’s nice to sit in the sand, but why not make your beach day more comfortable with a beach chair? Plus, pack an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun for total relaxation.
Remember to keep your snacks and drinks cold this summer! Having a cooler on hand will keep your food fresh. Don’t forget to include some ice packs!
While beach days are exciting, there is room for minor injuries to take place. Even though lifeguards can help, it’s always best to bring a first aid kit along to help treat cuts, scrapes, and burns.
Sunscreen is one of the most important things to pack when you’re going to the beach. Never underestimate the sun… even on a cloudy day!

One way to remember fun summer days with your family is by creating a souvenir box. The box can be a place to collect items that spark memories. You can fill the box with notes, drawings, small trinkets, and mementos—anything from a special time you had with your family or friends. As you make more memories throughout the summer, you can add more items to the box.
Materials
• A shoebox or cardboard box with a lid
• Paper (white or any color)
• Crayons, markers, or paint
• Stickers or other decorations
• Glue or tape
• Scissors (with adult supervision)
• Fabric scraps (optional)
Directions
1. Work together to decorate the box. You can cover it with paper, fabric scraps, stickers, or simply paint or color the box.
2. Talk about the special times you have shared with family and friends. Each person can write or draw about a fun summer memory they'd like to add to the box. Younger children may need help writing a message about the special time. You can add photographs or other mementos to the box, too!
3. Keep your box in a special place and continue to add to it throughout the summer. You can open the box anytime and share stories and memories about the things inside.

It’s almost time to celebrate! WCNY’s annual Leadership Society Appreciation Event is returning this fall. This event is a special gathering to recognize the generous members of our Leadership Society. It’s an opportunity for Leadership Society members to connect with fellow supporters, hear updates from WCNY leadership, and celebrate the impact their giving makes possible.
Leadership Society members contribute $1,200 or more annually to support WCNY’s mission. In return, members receive exclusive benefits, including access to special events, like this annual Appreciation event, behindthe-scenes experiences, and insight into how their support shapes the future of WCNY and our community.
Contact me at Meghan.Murphy@wcny. org or 315-385-7312 to reserve your spot at the event, or to learn more about the WCNY Leadership Society.

Plus, for those looking to experience the holiday season in a truly special way, there will be an exclusive opportunity to cruise the Danube River from December 14–21 with Lynn Elmhirst, host of “World’s Greatest Cruises.” This unforgettable journey will take you through Europe’s most picturesque Christmas markets, blending holiday charm with cultural discovery.

As summer heats up, WCNY invites our community to embrace the importance of planning for the future during Make-A-Will Month this August. While it may not be the most traditional summer activity, creating a will is one of the most essential steps in ensuring your legacy is preserved and your loved ones are protected.
Throughout the month, we encourage you to consider making a will—not only as a way to safeguard your assets but also to support causes and organizations that matter to you, like WCNY. By including WCNY in your estate plans, you can help sustain our mission to provide quality educational and cultural programming for future generations.
Making a will is not just about assigning assets; it’s about shaping a legacy that reflects your values and priorities. By considering WCNY in your estate plans, you are investing in your community and helping ensure that the rich tapestry of programming we offer continues to inspire and educate.
Creating a will may seem daunting, but it is a vital step in planning for your future. This August, take the time to reflect on your wishes and make those intentions known. Whether you are creating your first will or updating an existing one, it is an opportunity to address your family’s needs while considering how you can support the causes you care about—educational initiatives, trusted and reliable news coverage, or cultural programming. A legacy gift can help secure the future of public media, ensuring that our programs continue to inspire, educate, and entertain for generations to come.
WCNY’s commitment to enriching lives through educational content and cultural experiences is made possible by the generosity of our supporters. By planning your estate with WCNY in mind, you are helping to shape a legacy that reflects our shared values and sustains the vital work we do.
The goal of National Estate Planning Awareness Week is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their legacy. We believe everyone deserves the peace of mind that comes with a comprehensive estate plan.
To learn more about National Estate Planning Awareness Week or to notify WCNY of your intentions, contact Katherine Keeney at 315.551.6838 or katherine.keeney@wcny.org, or visit wcny.org/support-wcny/other-ways-to-give.
The process is simple, but your support lives well into the future.
