WCNY CONNECT Magazine (USPS 863060) (ISSN 1541-261X) is published bi-monthly by The Public Broadcasting Council of Central New York, Inc. Subscription is a benefit of paid membership, covered by membership dues.
The WCNY Entertainment Academy will open this fall to train a new generation of television and film production engineers, electricians, set designers, sound mixers, and camera operators.
These are the people who form the backbone of the entertainment industry— the grips and gaffers you see listed in the credits of every TV show and film you’ve ever watched. These are the men and women who show up on set early and stay late so we can enjoy their work.
The Entertainment Academy is funded by New York’s Empire State Development Corporation and is forged through partnership with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Union Local 52. We believe that by training TV and film production crew, the Academy will help catalyze growth and bring the production of more shows and movies to our region.
In the Academy, we will train a diverse group of people of ages 25 to 39 years old who will participate in one of three annual 14-week sessions held in the fall, spring, and summer. They will have direct contact with classroom teachers, experiential learning instructors, and professional development coaches. The curriculum will be taught by local union representatives, experienced WCNY staff, and adjunct faculty from across the entertainment industry.
This initiative fits the goals we have for WCNY to provide education, create economic opportunity, and enhance quality of life. The Academy builds on the education programs at WCNY. For years, Enterprise America has taught fiscal literacy and civic readiness to middle schoolers and the Jobs Explained project under way prepares students for careers in advanced manufacturing. Now, with the WCNY Entertainment Academy, we are expanding our commitment to help further workforce development.
There are many people whose efforts contribute to the success of a program of this scope, including each of you. We are grateful for the support you give WCNY. It strengthens our commitment to develop new ways to help the communities we serve. Thank you.

It’s summertime, and that means it’s again time for Classic FM to give YOU an opportunity to help shape our radio playlist by casting your vote for our Top 40 classical music pieces of all time. Take a look at the ballot on the right, then go to www.wcny.org/radio/top-40 to choose YOUR Top 40 favorites. Cast your votes throughout the months of July and August. We will tally the votes, publish the Top 40 online, and then count down those pieces for you live during Classic Choices starting Labor Day morning. It’s your chance to have a direct say in the great classical music you hear on Classic FM!
We also want to take the opportunity in this edition to remind you that you can listen to our stations online, as well as on the radio. More and more people are listening to our live streams. If you’ve never done that before, here’s how to listen to us on a computer, tablet, smartphone, or smart speaker:
- The main radio page of our website (wcny.org/radio) has three graphic/ buttons to “listen live” to any of our three stations: Classic FM, Community FM, and Oldies.
- When you click on any of those graphics, it takes you directly to the live streaming page for that station. Just click the “play” arrow and enjoy the station.
- Bookmark those webpages for easy access anytime!
For those of you with an Alexa Smart Speaker, follow this process to set up your device:
- Say “Alexa, enable the WCNY skill.”
- It will respond, then ask if you want to “listen live to WCNY Classic FM,” “listen to HD2” (Oldies), or “listen to HD3” (Community FM).
- Respond with the station you’d like to listen to, and it will start the live stream.
- After that initial setup, you should just have to say “Alexa, play WCNY” to get the three station choices.
- Enjoy our stations!
As always, thank you for your support, and thank you for listening to our WCNY radio stations!

Did you know that there’s a quick and straightforward way to feel more peaceful and happier? And you don’t need to devote hours to see the benefits.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Greg Hammer, a Stanford University professor, whose new book is called “GAIN Without Pain” on the “Zestful Aging” podcast. He has created a simple and effective way to guide us towards less stress and more peace. Hammer originally wrote the book to address the high level of burnout in the medical field, but his system works just as well for anyone wanting to feel calmer. Hammer’s method of retraining our brains—which love to dwell on the negative—does not require a trip to a yoga retreat or any special equipment. In fact, it doesn’t even require sitting up! I like to think of it as a “good enough” meditation. It’s effective and you can do it while you are in line at Target.
Hammer’s goal is to help us return to the present, “where happiness lives.” Our brains, after all, are wired to look for trouble, based on how we evolved. But practicing “GAIN,” an acronym for Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention and Non-judgement, rewires our brains in the direction of more positivity. And the more we practice, the better we get.
Nicole Christina is the host of multiaward-winning “Zestful Aging” podcast, heard in 106 countries. She interviews people from all walks of life about how to age with vitality, intention, and joy. Nicole welcomes comments from her listeners. Contact her at zestfulaging@gmail.com.
“Growing an experienced team
thought and perspectives was important to me - it allows us to better understand and support the communities we serve.”

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) is a Sesame Workshop initiative providing tools and resources to empower parents, caregivers, and service providers to support children in key areas that are critical for children’s wellbeing and success.
Sesame Workshop recognizes that when a family member struggles with addiction, the whole family struggles. But parents, teachers, caregivers, and other caring adults can comfort children and guide them through difficult moments. That’s why Sesame Workshop developed bilingual (English and Spanish) resources leveraging love and support to help children cope with parental addiction.
WCNY was excited to welcome back the Syracuse City School District to Enterprise America. Sixth grade students from several SCSD middle schools worked diligently with their teachers to prepare for their opportunity to run the Enterprise America City.
The Civics and Financial Readiness program was implemented in class by the SCSD Career and Technical Education teachers. Students elected a mayor and judge to act as their governing body, opened a bank account to track their personal spending, learned about taxes and healthcare, and so much more.
Congratulations to all the SCSD students who successfully ran the Enterprise America City!
WCNY and the Syracuse City School District look forward to continuing this partnership and providing a great experience for all sixth grade SCSD students for years to come.

This month-long initiative encourages Americans to create an estate plan that safeguards both their assets and loved ones.
With a legal will, you can approach the future with peace of mind by having a plan that communicates your wishes, provides for your loved ones, and sustains the causes you believe in. Want help? Talk with your lawyer or financial advisor to get started, or you can use freewill.com, a free, online resource that guides you through the process of creating a legally valid will in 20 minutes or less. Write or update your legal will this month and designate WCNY as a beneficiary in your estate plans.
Plan for the future and make a lasting impact. Support from our members, viewers, and listeners ensures that future generations benefit from WCNY’s educational and enlightening programming. From classical music to “Bill Knowlton’s Bluegrass Ramble,” to “Ivory Tower” and “Cycle of Health,” and quality children’s programming to PBS “MASTERPIECE,” “NATURE,” and more, your planned gift ensures WCNY’s ability to create and deliver quality programming for generations to come.
