One of our region’s most interesting and entertaining events will take place Saturday, August 16 at 2pm when the Broad River Greenway will launch its third annual North Carolina Championship Cardboard Boat Race.
Wait. Boats? Made of cardboard? That’s right. The quirky craft in question are made mainly of carboard and once put in the waters of the Broad River near the Hwy. 150 bridge must attempt to float with their paddlers about 300 feet downstream to the Greenway beach area.
Basically, the boats are built using only corrugated cardboard, glue, and duct tape.
“It’s amazing to watch creativity, teamwork, and a whole lot of duct tape come together in the boats,” said Broad River Greenway executive director Kim Duren. “Last year we had 16 boats entered by individuals and businesses as well.”
The complete list of boat construction rules and regulations can be found on the Greenway’s website (see below).
Folks of all ages can take part in the event. There are classifi-
cations for kids ages 9-12 and adults.
Safety is important and all participants must wear a personal floatation device and shoes. Helmets are required for ages 9-12 and recommended for adults as well. The event provides helmets.
“The Boiling Springs Fire Dept. Swift Water Rescue team is on site for the event,” said Duren.
The fun includes live music starting at 2pm while boats get
“He saw a similar race advertised online and said this was something we needed to do,” she said.
The boat race day will also host the Great Backyard Burger Cookoff. Details and rules here https://www. zeffy.com/en-US/ ticketing/the-greatbackyard-burgercookoff--2025.
checked in and ready to race. There will be a DJ during the remainder of the afternoon. There will be awards, vendors, food and kids activities. Registration is open until event day at www. broadrivergreenway.com.
Duren credits Greenway board of directors member Roland Hamrick with launching the idea.
“Folks better bring their Agame—this isn’t just any backyard burger,” said Greenway park ranger Lance Collins, “I’ve got years of trail-side grilling under my belt, and I’m not going down without a fight. May the best burger win!”
In addition to the boat race, the Greenway hosts other events throughout the year. Upcoming ones include a 5k/10-mile Trail Run on October 11. The runs start at 9am. The Enchanted Forest is set for November 7. This event is a Gardner-Webb community service project designed to entertain and educate kids age 2-12 about the nocturnal animals that live in North Carolina and the importance of sustaining their woodland habitat. December 7 will see Santa at Phifer cabin. This classic event is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. The free event offers a visit with Santa and time for you to take a picture with your camera. There will be light refreshments and a craft activity to take home.
the Broad River Greenway has plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities on tap.
There are 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, birdwatching, and horseback riding. The Broad River is ideal for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The Greenway has picnic areas and a playground for kids.
The Greenway is an oasis of flora and fauna. In addition to wildflowers, rhododendron and mountain laurel bloom profusely in the spring. Fall offers a kaleidoscope of leaf coloration in the dense forest. Along the river, birds such as blue heron, osprey and an occasional bald eagle can be seen. The Greenway is a hiking heaven. The natural-surface trail system winds its way along the river and woods. There is also a handicapped access path near the trailhead.
“Four miles of the trail are flat and easy,” said Duren. “There are other places with moderate elevation changes. The trails have interpretive signage and orienteering markers for compass navigation.”
Just over two miles of hiking is part of the Carolina Thread Trail system.
Horse trails wind through the park, offering beautiful views of the river and surrounding nature. Horse trailer parking is available, making it easy to load and unload Seabiscuit. The trails are well-maintained and suitable for riders of various skill levels.

My name is Carolyn Jackson, and for the past ten years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as executive director of The Banker’s House, a treasured historic landmark on the edge of uptown Shelby. Over the past decade, I’ve had the honor of working alongside an extraordinary group of people to restore, preserve, and reimagine this unique property as a vibrant space for community engagement and special events. When I first began this journey, The Banker’s House Foundation had just been established to steward this remarkable site—a rare Second Empire-style home built in 1875—along with its surrounding grounds and outbuildings. Once a private residence, the house was generously donated by George and Nancy Blanton to be shared with the community. A group of dedicated citizens, including myself, was asked to help chart a vision for
the property’s future.
Today, that vision has come to life. The Banker’s House campus now includes a beautifully restored carriage house and barn, along with expanded grounds—thanks to the recent gift of three adjoining lots from the daughters of the Blanton family. With more than three acres bordering uptown Shelby, the property serves as both a historic site and a thriving venue for public and private events.
Under the leadership of the Foundation, with the help of staff, a volunteer Advisory Council, and countless community members, The Banker’s House has become a hub of activity. We host monthly historic tours, an annual Christmas Reveal featuring festive decorations by local volunteers, and our signature fundraiser—Run for the Roses, a Kentucky Derby-themed event that supports summer day camps for rising fifth graders, including participants from the Boys & Girls Club and the foster care system. Additional funds help support preservation and capital improvements across the property. The venue also stays active year-round with weddings, receptions, and private rentals that bring even more people through our doors.
This decade has been a meaningful chapter in both the life of The Banker’s House and my own. As I prepare to retire, I am excited to pass the torch to May Reed, who will begin as the new executive director on August 1, 2025. May brings a deep appreciation for the history of the house, a diverse background of professional ex-
perience, and a fresh vision for what lies ahead.
It has been an honor to serve this place and this community. I look forward to watching The Banker’s House continue to thrive in its next chapter.
A Word from New Executive Director May Reed: To call this my dream job would be an understatement.
I’ve been captivated by The Banker’s House since moving to Shelby four years ago. Originally from eastern North Carolina, I spent more than 30 years living and working in Virginia—but returning to my Tar Heel roots was always the plan. Shelby welcomed us with open arms. From its rich history and small-town charm to its incredible sense of community, this place quickly felt like home.
My husband, Randy, and I have settled in beautifully. You’ll often spot us walking our rescue lab, Sadie, who came to us through Clifford’s Army Rescue. We have grown twins—our daughter and her husband live in New York City, and our son lives in Charleston, South Carolina. Both are wonderful places to visit and a joy to be part of our story.
Professionally, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in Shelby’s vibrant community life. I joined Cleveland Country Club in 2022 as Marketing Director and later served as Director of Food and Beverage. In 2024, I took on a new challenge with Paradise Landscape as their Marketing, Special Events, and Communications Specialist.
From the moment I met Carolyn Jackson, I was inspired
by her passion, vision, and warmth. Our friendship has grown, and it’s an honor to step into the role she has shaped so thoughtfully. Carrying forward the legacy of The Banker’s House is both a responsibility and a joy. I am deeply excited about the possibilities ahead and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the next chapter in the life of this historic treasure.

Arrive one morning, hang a tree
late that morning, and hunt that afternoon. I like for my first hunt to be in the afternoon so that everything is situated before climbing my stand in the dark, for the next morning hunt. When I’m there, I usually spend most hours of the day in a stand. So, comfort is essential. For years, however, comfort was essential only if it didn’t cost me anything. I used inexpensive climbing sticks and tree stands. But in reality, I paid dearly as I usually sat in pain and awkwardness the whole time. And there is nothing more miserable than doing what you love, in pain. I did that until I realized how my cheapness was ruining this incredible experience. I decided to save my money and get what I needed to hunt in comfort. Thank God for my Rivers Edge Big Foot Tree Ladder and my Millennium Monster Hang-On Tree Stand. I mention names not because I’m sponsored. I’m not. But because they are the comfort duo that I love. And what a difference an all-day stay makes now. I no longer dread the long days in the woods. Comfort costs. Sometimes, however, pain has greater benefits. There’s a quote that has been front and center in my mind for the past year or so. It’s from Gary Brecka. He says, “Aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort.” He says this not as comfort to be something pursued but as something to fight against as you grow older. The truth is, as we age, we are drawn to comfort – to ease. We have worked hard, and we want retirement. We have struggled, fought, and paid our dues. Now we just want to hunt in the mornings and play pickleball in the afternoon. And while it’s a worthwhile goal to be comfortable financially; health wise, comfort is a killer. Pain is power. Pain pushes muscle and mind and prevents atrophy of both. But pain also has spiritual benefits. First, it provides an opportunity for God to comfort us. Secondly, it provides the ministry God gifted us for. And thirdly it gives us the message God has for the people we are to minister to. Here’s how Paul described these three. “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (2 Corinth 1:3-4 NLT) There you have it. The reason for our pain is so that we can be a comfort to others, as God has comforted us in our pain. So, you see, there is both purpose and power in our pain. In most things, embrace pain. It will keep you physically and spiritually young.

Summer’s lazy days are drawing to a close, and the familiar rhythm of a new school year beckons. The anticipation is palpab le: students eagerly await reunions with friends while parents secretly count down the days until routines return. Yet emotions run the full spectrum. Some hearts flutter with excitement about new possibilities, while others carry the weight of anxiety about unknown challenges. Whether you’re embracing this transition with joy or facing it with trepidation, God invites you to place Him at the very center of your journey Colossians 3:17 (AMP) beautifully captures this truth: “Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and
DANYALE PATTERSON
in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
Trust in His Faithfulness
This new chapter isn’t meant to be navigated alone. God longs for you to entrust Him with every aspect of your journey: your deepest fears, your burning concerns, and your most cherished dreams. When we anchor our confidence in the Lord rather than our own abilities, we discover a peace that transcends circumstances. Jeremiah 17:7 (NLT) promises: “But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence.” As the months unfold, you’ll find yourself looking back with wonder at God’s faithful provision. Every challenge overcome, every unexpected blessing, every moment of growth will bear witness to His loving care. There’s wisdom in the old saying: “I don’t know what the future
holds, but I know who holds the future.”
Walking with the Ultimate Helper God’s desire is simple yet profound: to journey alongside you from the very first day through the final celebration. He finds joy in being your constant companion, your source of strength, and your ever-present help. Isaiah 41:13 (ESV) paints a tender picture: “For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” It’s perfectly natural to feel butterflies when facing something new. But when we invite God into our experiences, He doesn’t just help us cope, He transforms our ordinary moments into extraordinary opportunities for growth, connection, and purpose. This school year, whatever it may hold, remember that you’re not walking alone. The God who holds the future is holding
your hand today.
Let’s Pray:
“I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever. As I enter a brand new day and school year, I am thankful that you have given me a new mercy, another chance to get it right. Please fill me, every student, teacher and parent with your peace,
love and wisdom. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors
and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
