Broad River Genealogical Society holds grand opening of expanded facility

September 11 saw the Broad River Genealogical Society (BRGS) hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of its newly upgraded and expanded facility at 1145 County Home Rd. in Shelby. The event was attended by a large gathering of BRGS members, local and state dignitaries, as well as folks generally interested in finding out more about how to research what sort of ancestors might be hanging out in their family tree.

Thanks to $495K in state grants, the amount of space at the BRGS headquarters has doubled. Those funds allowed the group, which was incorporated in 1980, to grow their building by an additional 1800 sq.ft. from its original 1,200Sq. ft.

NC State House representative Kelly Hastings, NC Senate representative W. Ted Alexander, and former NC Speaker of the House Tim

Moore (now in Congress) were instrumental in getting the funds approved. Hastings and Alexander were at the ribbon cutting.

The facility is a cornucopia of historical material. Rev. Jonathan Glisson of Pleasant City Church across the street nailed it when he called the place “a house of discovery”.

Inside, shelf after shelf of books chronicle the heritage of not only Cleveland County, but also Rutherford County and other counties and states across the nation. “We have something from most all the states,” said BRGS secretary Ann Wright.

In addition, there are cases and file cabinets full of archival photos and clippings from local and regional families. Several glass cases hold artifacts dating back as far as the American Revolution. In the rear of the building are bound volumes of local newspapers and city directories going back decades. There are also back issues of the society’s own

“Eswau Huppeday” featuring stories and articles on local/regional history and genealogy along with a listing of BRGS publications for sale.

Wait, there’s even more. Other materials include area high school annuals, copies of historic land deeds and grants, census records, church histories, rare maps, records of marriages, and military service, computerized research aids, DAR records, Civil War records, and tons of other things that get

genealogists and family historians salivating. The facility interior is light

and airy and there are plenty of large tables to spread research

materials out on, and of course comfy chairs to sit in while researching the stuff. Broad River Geneological Society (BRGS)president Dolores Ashworth joined BRGS when she moved to Shelby from Louisiana 40 years ago.

“I love genealogy and grew up hearing stories about my French ancestors,” she said. “The members of our group have done a wonderful job over the years growing the collection. They love family and love helping other people research their own. It is amazing and is a team effort.”

Shelby city council member Violet Arth was on hand for the grand opening. She opened a copy of the 1999 Shelby High yearbook and spotted her senior year photo.

“Preserving our history is very important and I’m pleased the society has a building for that purpose,” she said.

The facility is open the second and third Saturdays each month from 9am to 1pm. It’s also open every Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm and other times by appointment.

The society also has special, informational, and entertaining presentations each month. On Oct. 12 at 3pm the Foothills Quilters Guild will have a trunk show of quilts going back 164 years. On Nov. 9 at 3pm Dale Swofford will give a talk on Carolina gold in the Kings Mtn. area. On Dec. 14 at 3pm there will be a “Show and Tell” event where folks can bring their special small items and share stories about them.

Currently, the BRGS has about 150 members and is looking to grow its ranks. Membership is $30 a year and that includes a subscription to the quarterly bulletin, membership updates, research assistance and support. You do not have to live in our region to be a member. In fact, BRGS has members as far away as Alaska and California. Volunteers are

eagerly welcomed.

What to do about wellness after 50

Reaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for decades to come.

• Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. In 2018, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy

Aging found that 86 percent of pet owners felt their pets make them feel loved while 73 percent said their pets provided a sense of purpose. Pets also can ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active and provide opportunities to connect with other people.

• Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains.

• Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance

through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. That’s a significant benefit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every three adults age 65 and older experiences a fall each year, and as many as 30 percent of those falls lead to serious injury.

• Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Individuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible.

Various strategies can help people maintain mental and physical wellness as they make their way through their 50s and beyond.

Have you ever watched a caterpillar spin a cocoon and just… stop? It looks like nothing is happening. Day after day, that little case just hangs there, unmoving. But inside, something miraculous is taking place. When a caterpillar enters its chrysalis, its body actually dissolves into a kind of “soup.” Everything it once was is broken down. Hidden deep inside are special cells called imaginal cells. These

cells were waiting for this very moment. They begin to activate and form the new parts of the butterfly: wings, antennae, legs, even its mouthparts. From the outside, it appears lifeless. But inside, transformation is happening. Spiritually, the cocoon stage represents those seasons where God calls us to wait, be still, and let Him work. Sometimes we feel hidden, forgotten, or even “stuck.” But God uses those very seasons to do His deepest work. Philippians 1:6 (AMP) says, “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].”

It’s a Process

Just like the caterpillar, we must go through the process of change. The old life is broken down so that the new life in Christ can emerge. Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 2:20 (NLT), “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Death to self is not easy, but it’s necessary for true transformation. We must allow God to do his work of pruning us so that we become everything he desires. John 15:2 (NLT) says, “He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.” The cocoon

stage is also a place of vulnerability. The caterpillar cannot protect itself, cannot rush the process, cannot make itself into a butterfly. All it can do is rest and let the Creator’s design do its work. Your “hidden” season is not wasted. It is holy. God is forming you, shaping you, preparing you. You may not see it yet, but He is making something new.

Let’s Pray:

“Lord, you are the author and finisher of my faith. You are the omniscient Creator. You know all things. I praise you. I honor you. I trust you. Forgive me for throwing tantrums during my cocoon seasons. I surrender to your will and way. Make me and mold me into a vessel you will be pleased with. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

My deer season opens in few days. I’ll be sitting in my truck instead of my tree stand. I’ll be heading to North Carolina to speak at a sportsmen’s dinner. When I booked this event, I didn’t give one thought to it being opening day. Because in Tennessee and North Carolina, the temps will probably reach the 80’s. And I prefer to hunt in camo instead of speedos. This was not always the case. (not the speedo part). In my early years of deer hunting, every day of the season held endless possibilities. And every day I stayed home, that was the day I thought the big one was going to come through. So, I would find a way to go early and often. This was great until I found myself lingering a little longer on the pillow during the best part of the season. I had hunted so hard during September and October that when November came around, I stayed home on the days I should have been in the woods. Today, a lot of things are different. The trail camera helps me determine if an early hunt is even needed, and the internet tells me what days each year are the best to be in the woods. And most of all, I’ve simply learned to believe that my situation is not an exception, but the rule. That is, no matter how much I feel that I need to do a certain thing, I will most likely follow what the charts say instead of my feelings. The charts have no emotions. They don’t even have thoughts. They just have truth. And I can decide whether I want to trust my emotions, thoughts, or truth. And that’s why I’ll probably not go to the woods very much until the end of October. But let’s flesh out these emotions, thoughts, and truth. Because they are extremely important for our spiritual lives. You see, our thoughts and emotions are tied together. What we think shapes how we feel. And how we feel shapes what we think. Negative thoughts fuel discouragement, while discouragement feeds more negative thoughts. The same is true for positivity and hope. These are cyclical. If we are not anchored in something good and steady, we will live our lives on some roller coaster of anxiety and uncertainty. And what then should steady us? The truth about God and His ways. These truths remind us that He is good, and that He takes responsibility for our provision, protection, and purpose. And when we are certain about these things, our thoughts and emotions no longer control us.

Helping Hands Nursing Services celebrates 50th anniversary

By all appearances, Helping Hands Nursing Services is a business that is deeply committed to providing quality care to each and every client by incorporating strong work ethics and dedication to their goals.

The ethics, President Ruth Huffstetler highlights, may be the very reason for the sustainability and strength of the business being celebrated.

On September 11, 2025, Huffstetler, along with staff, caregivers, patients and other guests, celebrated the 50th anniversary of business by having a dinner event at the LeGrand Center in Shelby, NC, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The celebration included a buffett-style dinner, cocktails and gift bags. The 'Black Table Cloth' event was sponsored by Helping Hands Nursing Services and Ruth Huffstetler.

Ruth and her administrative assistant, Ashley Hanley, not only spent months planning the event, but Huffstetler also donated all costs necessary for food, drinks, gifts and flowers personally.

There were also opportunities to have photos made upon request so the event would be remembered by all in attendance.

Ruth said she felt that the 50th year would be a perfect time to celebrate, since it is a milestone. She added, “I was especially happy to have Kay Holzhauser as a guest since she was an original owner of the business. I know that the success of our business has always been very important to her.”

Huffstetler has been with Helping Hands Nursing Service for more than 30 years and began her interest in healthcare in 1988. In 1995, the former owner of Helping Hands Nursing Service sold due to her health issues. At that point, Huffstetler became the third owner of Helping Hands Nursing Service.

Huffstetler explained her position as being a referring agent for care givers of every skill level, meaning that she can locate care for each client not only based on their medical needs but also on that particular individual’s scheduling needs.

She was quick to acknowledge the health care crisis the nation currently faces, and

she stated she is not only dismayed by the strict financial restrictions imposed by the system in place, she is upset about the havoc it causes individuals in need. “If an individual has a few dollars more than what is allocated currently, that individual may lose the much-needed help they deserve. Often, the individuals in crisis have worked diligently all of their life.”

She feels Helping Hands Nursing Staff’s success can be attributed to referring qualified and caring caregivers as well as working from referrals from a broad array of hospitals, nursing homes, doctors, assisted living facilities and social workers.

According to Huffstetler, the business employs two fulltime management staff and approximately 130 caregivers.

She is also a strong advocate for her clients and reiterates that by saying, “My staff and I feel that each of us has the duty to do our best possible for each patient, and we are the voices that speak for our patients and their needs.”

When asked what she felt could improve the current obstacles in health care quality, she replied, “I feel people should be educated about the costs and obstacles of health care we face, and if it is possible to save toward those future costs, prior to becoming ill.”

Hanley added, “I believe the event today is a success. We have worked since February of this year planning the event and we had approximately 180 guests in attendance.”

Town of Boiling Springs, NC Announces New Police Chief Brian DiYorio and promotion of Lt. Jonathan Gantt

September 17, 2025, The Town of Boiling Springs is delighted to announce Brian DiYorio as the Town’s next Police Chief. DiYorio will join the Boiling Springs Police Department beginning in October 2025. A graduate of Appalachian State University, DiYorio began his career as a Patrol Officer in South Carolina before joining the City of Gastonia Police Department. Having served in various capacities with the City of Gastonia Police Department (GPD), DiYorio has led multiple specialized units including crisis negotiations, tactical units, and community-oriented policing units. Immediately prior to his transition to Boiling Springs Police Department, DiYorio served as a Lieutenant and Watch Commander with GPD. DiYorio will be joined by long-time Boiling Springs Police Department Detective Sergeant, Jonathan Gantt, who has been promoted to Lieutenant. As the Department’s Lieutenant, Gantt will serve as second-in-command of Police operations, notably including the Department’s community-oriented policing strategy. Town Manager Zachary Parker stated “I could not be more excited to welcome Chief DiYorio to this position. Additionally, the promotion of now-Lieutenant Gantt to a critical leadership role within the Department will bring valuable institutional and community knowledge to the leadership team. Both DiYorio and Gantt are excited about the direction of the Town, care deeply about the community-oriented approach to police philosophy, and understand the needs of modern police departments.”

“Chief DiYorio’s background made him a unique, stand-alone candidate who could step in to this role ready to hit-the-groundrunning” Parker stated. “My excitement is only bolstered by the addition of Lieutenant Gantt’s new role.” Gantt has been a stalwart Officer of the Department, having worked for the Town since the early 2000’s. Parker added “everyone knows Jonathan, he cares deeply for this community—his community. He understands the unique characteristics that make Boiling Springs a special place.”

DiYorio and Gantt will begin their new roles with the Boiling Springs Police Department in October 2025. The Town is planning a meet-and-greet with both the new Chief and Lieutenant. More information on this event will be published through the Town’s social media account.

Born July 15, 2021, Walker is

handsome boxer mix with a gentle soul and a story that tugs at the heart. He was adopted in 2022 and lived as a cherished member of a family, snuggling on the couch, watching TV with two children, and soaking up love.

But after his family separated, Walker was returned to us through no fault of his own. He came back emaciated, with hair loss and a heavy heart. Thanks to care, compassion, and time, Walker has made a full recovery and is once again the sweet, playful boy he was meant to be.

Now, he’s ready to find a new forever family. Could that be you?

Adoption Process & Requirements

We’re committed to making thoughtful, lasting matches between our dogs and their future families. Here’s how it works:

• Step 1: Fill out our adoption application.

• Step 2: We’ll review your info and follow up with any questions.

• Step 3: A home visit may be scheduled to ensure a safe, loving environment.

• Step 4: Once approved, you’ll meet your potential new best friend.

Apply here: https://cliffordsarmyrescue.com/1423-2/

Adoption Fee: $250 (includes vetting, vaccinations, microchip, and spay/neuter if not already completed.)

Walker has known love, and he’s ready to feel it again. Let’s give him the second chance he so deeply deserves. Come meet adoptable CARE dogs every Friday, 11 am to 2 pm at RollOver Pets located at 105 W. Warren St., Shelby, NC.
