Cleveland Country Club proud of its past, looking

The centennial of one of our region’s recreational and social icons, Cleveland Country Club, is just around the corner and that institution is celebrating with exciting updates and ideas. The Club started out in 1927 on land that was the site of the historic Cleveland Springs Hotel. The property was along current E. Marion St. and Country Club Rd. The land was designated for

wholesome social cordiality”- a credo the Club still embraces. Golf is the backbone of Cleveland Country Club. The par 72, 18hole links were designed by John Lafoy. Land for the course was originally cleared with mules, drag pans, axes, and dynamite. The current course measures 6,443 yards from the blue tees, has a slope of 136, and a 71.8 USGSA course rating. Golf cart paths were added in 1986. In 2010, the greens were reseeded with a miniverde hybrid Bermuda

Some interesting personalities have played the course including Earl Scruggs, Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros, and female golf pro Peggy Kirk Bell. Another female golfer to hit the club links was Millie Keeter Holbrook who started at age eight and went on to win many state and regional titles. Holbrook, who is a Lifetime Senior of the LPGA, played profes-

sionally for 10 years. She has also been a member of the club for over 50 years.

Tennis is another popular Cleveland Country Club activity. The first courts were made in the late 1920s of local red clay and lime which were later converted to composition and hard surfaces. Currently, the club offers four clay courts and two hard courts. Also, the hard courts are marked to accommodate the highly popular pickle ball.

Like golf, the Club has seen some outstanding tennis players hit its courts over the years,

future

including national-level star Tim Wilkinson who moved upward from local fame to play as a pro for 25 years at many top spots including Wimbledon.

Many memories have been made at Cleveland Country Club over the years. Barbara McLarty, 83, and her family have been members since her youth. She shared some recollections of how the club was a welcome haven then, and now.

“When I was in college I could

not wait to come home and come to the club,” she said. “My friends and I played the slot machines and ate at the snack bar. It had the best cheeseburgers on the planet.”

McLarty mused fondly on the social activities the club offered.

“The dances and parties were great,” she said. “My husband Gordon and I had our wedding reception here.”

CLUB

From Page 1

The McLarty name is prominent these days at the club. Thanks to a generous donation from Barbara for its remodeling, the golf pro shop bears the name “Gordon McLarty” on its outside wall facing the course.

Building on its rich legacy, in 2020 club members embarked on an ambitious program of modernization and maintenance. Around $2 million was spent on upgrades to the main clubhouse and grounds.

Places that have benefitted from the project include indoor and outdoor dining areas, rebuilt golf course bunkers, improved course drainage, landscaping, general freshening up of the clubhouse exterior, and parking lot upgrades.

Especially exciting are the large outdoor terrace with fire pits and couches. The bar area has been remodeled and large windows there overlook the course. The Hanna Room where receptions and parties can be held has received a full facelift with new flooring, lighting, bathrooms, and wall treatments. The Hanna family contributed $100,000 for the work.

Cleveland Country Club dining experience has been supercharged. Executive Chef Jack Acheson, who studied briefly in Paris as part of schooling, has brought his talents onboard with international wine and food pairings and an eclectic menu featuring mouth-watering dishes such as sous vide duck, crab-stuffed flounder, fusion pastas, Cleveland shrimp, ribeye and filet mignon steaks, and much more.

Club manager Lisa Culbreath praised the work Acheson has done.

“I had a member tell me we have the best restaurant in the county,” she said.

With its new look, the club has a fresh attitude and is seeking to attract new members by moving into the “modern era” with an emphasis on a family friendly, casual vibe. As the Club website puts it - “long-time members, along with the new, come to the Club to celebrate old traditions while they create new memories and new traditions of their own”.

Club vice president Brett McGennis put it this way - “We are definitely not stuffy.”

Another nice thing about the Club is the fact it has open doors for non-member folks who would like to rent its rooms for things such as wedding receptions, graduation events, corporate pow-wows, reunions, and that sort of thing.

Clubs and organizations can avail themselves of the Club too.

“The Shelby Rotary holds its meeting here every Friday,” said Culbreath.

Interested in joining a country club where you can show up in everything from your

finest togs to jeans and shorts and where kids are welcome and where the recreation, fellowship, and food are all first class? Call Lisa Culbreath at 704-482-1711 or visit the Club website at Clevelandcountryclub.net. Fore!

Have you ever received a failing grade in school? I have, and what it meant was that I had to retake the test because I didn’t learn the principles as well as I should have. I definitely don’t want to fail life tests, but the same thing happens. If we don’t learn the lesson God is trying to teach us, we will delay our spiritual growth. God wants us to go from faith to faith and glory to glory, not remain in the same place. Paul admonishes in Hebrews 6:1 (NLT): “So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God.”

The Long Road

Another problem with not learning what we should in a timely manner is that it takes us a long time to get where God wants to take us, or we

don’t get there at all. For example, the Israelites were only supposed to travel for a few days when they left Egypt, but it took them 40 years and most didn’t make it to the Promised Land. This is heartbreaking; it was their unbelief, sin, and rebellion, instead of surrendering wholeheartedly to God’s plan, that kept them wandering in the wilderness. Joshua 5:6 (NLT) says: “The Israelites had traveled in the wilderness for forty years until all the men who were old enough to fight in battle when they left Egypt had died. For they had disobeyed the LORD, and the LORD vowed he would not let them enter the land he had sworn to give us - a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Lifetime Learners

Sometimes we rush through life without paying attention to what God is showing us, and we make many mistakes or we think we already know certain principles. However, we don’t simply arrive at a point where we know everything about God and the kingdom of heaven. Instead, we need to always be students who study, obey, and teach others. God will even blow fresh revelation on Biblical principles we think we know well. Let’s follow

Ezra’s example who was a priest and a scribe. Ezra 7:10 (ESV) says: “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.”

Let’s Pray:

“Lord, you are good and your mercy endures forever. Forgive me for doubt, unbelief, laziness and pride. Help me to be an attentive student of your word and Holy Spirit. I surrender to you and your ways. Help me to grow and become spiritually mature In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Tina White shines as CTE Teacher of the Year finalist

One year ago, Cleveland County Schools honored Tina White as its district's North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher of the Year. At the Board of Education meeting on August 11, the school system shared and celebrated even bigger news: White is now a Finalist for North Carolina CTE Teacher of the Year!

Mrs. White, a health science teacher at Kings Mountain High School (KMHS), is one of only twenty-four educators statewide to earn this honor, and the first-ever from Cleveland County to reach finalist status.

She has been recognized before thousands

of CTE colleagues at the NC Summer Conference, and she will attend a weeklong leadership program before the winner is announced in Greensboro in December. Her colleagues describe her as innovative, creative, engaging, empowering, and rigorous. Former students say she not only shaped their careers but also inspired them to be the best version of themselves. A former student, now an ICU nurse, recalls her famous classroom quote: "I teach you to be confident in your skills so that you will be competent in your skills."

North Carolina CTE programs emphasize real-world skills and prac-

tical knowledge, helping students develop basic academic skills (reading, writing, math), creative thinking and problemsolving, teamwork and independence, as well as technological proficiency. These programs are integrated into middle and high school curricula, offering students hands-on learning, internships, and career exploration opportunities. CTE students are more likely to have clear post-high school plans and report higher satisfaction with their education.

Kings Mountain High School and Cleveland County Schools congratulate Tina White on this amazing achievement.

Preparation for deer season is in full swing. Just check out any of your favorite groups or people on social media and you’ll see that we’re all doing the same thing. Checking stands and cameras. Making food plots. Shooting bows and guns. Gathering clothes, boots, and other gear. It’s all happening right now. In some places the season will open in a few days. In others, it’s just around the corner. And nothing brings a greater sense of peace than being prepared before the season gets here. The rest that comes from readiness is unparalleled. Sure, there will be unseen frustrations, but these always add flavor to our hunting stories.

I heard a story about a farmer looking for a hired hand. One person that applied didn’t look especially strong or skilled. And when asked what made him qualified for the position, he simply said, “I can sleep in a storm.” The farmer didn’t understand the answer, but something about this man, drew the farmer to give him the job. He turned out to be a good worker. As it often does, one night a violent storm swept across the farm. The farmer jumped out of bed in a panic and rushed to wake his hired hand but found him sound asleep. Frustrated, the farmer checked the farm himself. To his surprise, everything was secure. The shutters were latched, tools put away, animals sheltered, and the hay was covered. The hired hand could sleep in the storm because he had prepared well before bad weather arrived.

One of the lessons of this story is that much of our concern is wasted energy. It comes because we didn’t prepare beforehand. But there’s an even greater truth here. It’s not just about our preparation. It’s about God’s. The Bible tells of another storm, one that came suddenly while Jesus and His disciples were on a boat. The wind howled and the waves crashed, and the disciples panicked. And when they looked for Jesus, He was asleep. He could sleep in the storm because He controlled the storm. And that’s the real encouragement for us. While we do our best to prepare for the things in life, there will always be unexpected storms. It’s then that our deepest peace won’t come from what we do or even from how well we have prepared. It will come from trusting the One who has taken care of the storm even before we knew it was coming. There’s never been a storm that has kept Jesus awake. And yours won’t either.
