City of KM Office Closures The City of Kings Mountain Offices will close on Wednesday, December 24th, Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December. The City offices will reopen on Monday, December 28, 2025, in observance of the Christmas holiday. Their offices will be open regular hours on December 21, 2025, but will be closed on January 1, 2026, in observance of New Year's Day and will reopen on January 2, 2026, with regular business hours.

Second Saturday Movies at the Joy Theatre kicks off January 10 By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain Forward, with Kings Mountain Little Theater, is excited to launch Second Saturday Movies at the Joy Theatre, a new family-focused initiative that begins January 10 and runs through June. On the second Saturday of each month, families are invited to gather at the historic Joy Theatre, 202 S. Railroad Avenue downtown for a fun, welcoming family experience. Clev. Co. Deputies intercept 138 lbs. of meth in KM On December 16, 2025, members of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office Community Interdiction Team observed a 2024 Omoda sedan traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 74 in the Kings Mountain area. The vehicle was displaying a Mexico license plate from Sinaloa, Mexico, with a cover partially concealing the tag. Deputies initiated a traffic stop on Highway 74 for a registration violation. The driver and sole occupant was identified as Felix Tirado-Ramirez, a Mexican national. During the stop, a Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office K-9 conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle and provided a positive alert. Based on probable cause, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located approximately 138 pounds of crystal methamphetamine concealed inside. Tirado-Ramirez was

TIRADO-RAMIREZ arrested and charged with two counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine. He was transported to the Cleveland County Jail, where he is being held without bond. The methamphetamine seized during this operation has an estimated street value of approximately $3 million. Congressman Tim Moore introduces bill to expand American Nuclear Leadership and Energy Innovation The Next Generation Nuclear Deployment Act Follows Trump Executive Order on American Nuclear Energy Dominance Recently, Congressman Tim M o o r e (NC-14) introduced the Next Generation Nuclear DeTIM MOORE ployment Act to advance America’s leadership in next-generation nuclear energy and ensure the United States remains at the forefront of clean energy innovation. “Energy dominance begins with innovation,” said Congressman Moore. “This bill builds on the Trump Administration’s momentum to deploy cutting-edge nuclear technology that can power our future, from artificial intelligence to space exploration, while creating good-paying jobs here at home. America must lead, not follow, in the race for advanced nuclear energy.” Specifically, the Next Generation Nuclear Deployment Act will ensure the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program encompasses at least 10 test sites across the country, including one micro-reactor, defined as capable of producing up to 10 megawatts of electricity.

Additionally, the bill would allow advanced nuclear testing and development on non-DOE sites, a major reform that will unlock public-private collaboration and relieve pressure on limited federal infrastructure. It also encourages the Secretary of Energy to pursue cost-sharing partnerships with private industry and research institutions to accelerate deployment and reduce taxpayer risk. Moore’s legislation follows President Trump’s Executive Order 14301, which expanded the DOE’s Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program to 11

lead projects, with three expected to come online by July 4, 2026. This legislation is supported by American companies and organizations, with Duke Energy saying, “As the operator of the nation's largest regulated nuclear fleet, Duke Energy is fully supportive of advancing federal efforts to develop new nuclear generation that we can deploy on our system. We deeply appreciate and thank Congressman Moore for his continued support of the nuclear energy industry. The Next Generation Nuclear Deployment Act will bolster the crit-

ical work underway to develop and deploy advanced nuclear technology in the United States. By Allyson Parker The Southern New Year’s Day meal is simple by all appearances; however, it is rich in traditional value. Just a week after celebrating Christmas with turkey, ham, and rich casseroles, many Southerners turn toward a far more humble meal consisting of greens, pork (usually ham), black-eyed peas, and cornbread. This traditional meal was established in the Appalachian Mountains and became customary among early Scottish settlers. Over time, it evolved into a deeply rooted Southern tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next. The idea behind this longtime custom is to approach the New Year with ambitions of health,

wealth, and wisdom. With those aspirations in mind, each food served carries symbolic value. Greens, usually mustard, turnip, collard, or a mixture of the three, symbolize wealth in the form of paper money. Black-eyed peas represent coins. The belief is simple: even if one has no paper currency, having change in one’s pocket means they are not entirely broke. Cornbread symbolizes substance and value. Served alongside beans and greens, it reflects the hope that if a person becomes financially prosperous, they will also have the strength of mind and soul to use that prosperity wisely. Finally, pork or fatback, often used to season the beans or served as a side course, completes the meal. Pork is preferred because pigs move forward rather

than backward. Eating pork on New Year’s Day symbolizes progress, forward movement, and leaving the past behind. Together, these humble foods form more than a meal. They represent resilience, intention, and hope for the year ahead. What the Foods Represent: Greens: Symbolize paper money and financial growth. Black-eyed peas: Represent coins and the belief that even small resources matter. Cornbread: Stands for substance, value, and the wisdom to manage prosperity. Pork: Symbolizes moving forward and not dwelling on the past.

Multiple large national banks have recently implemented or announced increases to checking account maintenance fees. While customers can still avoid these fees through “qualifying direct deposits” or minimum balance thresholds, some institutions are also raising the requirements to qualify for those waivers. The changes are being rolled out by some of the largest banks in the country, including Wells Fargo, Chase, and U.S. Bank. The Political Context The wave of fee increases is rooted in a legislative battle over overdraft regulations.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently moved to protect consumers by creating a rule that would have limited overdraft fees to $5. The rule was designed to reduce the burden on consumers by capping fees or requiring banks to justify higher charges as a formal line of credit. However, shortly after the rule was published, Congress nullified it before it could take full effect in May 2025. Although the regulatory threat to overdraft revenue was removed, banks that initiated fee hikes during that window have chosen to maintain the higher rates and stricter waiver requirements. Bank-Specific Changes • Wells Fargo: The bank is increasing the monthly service fee on its “Everyday Checking” account from $10 to $15. Additionally, the minimum daily balance required to waive the fee has jumped from $500 to $1,500. While the waiver for $500 in

monthly direct deposits remains unchanged, the bank added a new waiver option for customers maintaining $5,000 in combined deposit or investment balances. These changes were set to apply to fee periods beginning after Nov. 29, 2025. • Chase: Chase implemented its price hike in August, raising the “Chase Total Checking” monthly maintenance fee from $12 to $15. Unlike competitors, Chase does not appear to have altered the requirements to waive the fee. • U.S. Bank: The fee for the “Bank Smartly” account has risen from $6.95 to $12. This change is effective for new accounts, with existing customers expected to see the increase next month. U.S Bank also eliminated several waiver options: Smart Awards (Gold Tier or higher) and holding a small business checking account no longer exempt customers from the See BANKS, Page 5A

Pieces of Kings Mountain History Back in the early 1960s, Christmas in Kings Mountain LORETTA was pure COZART magic. It wasn’t flashy or overdone—it was something quieter, something uniquely ours. I still remember riding with my family in my dad’s VW bus as we drove west on King Street, entering town along Highway 74 Business. Spanning the street were two glowing red reindeer surrounded in white lights that stretched from one side of King Street to the other. Telephone poles were decorated too, perhaps with snowflakes—maybe even the very same ones still used today. At Mauney Memorial Library, a giant Christmas tree stood proudly on the lawn to the left, wrapped

in a warm white glow. The library doors were always adorned with wreaths tied in beautiful red bows, and many of the downtown shops followed suit. One year, we drove through a thick fog, and the lights shimmered even more beautifully, as if the town itself were wrapped in a dream. But for every child in Kings Mountain, the true highlight of Christmas was the display window at Bridges Hardware. While it couldn’t quite rival the famous Higbee’s Department Store window from A Christmas Story, it came in a very close second. Inside the window stood a grand Santa Claus, surrounded by every toy a child could imagine - dolls, sleds, bikes, tricycles, toy guns, wagons. Across the top hung a festive banner filled with images of

Santa and his favorite drink, Coca-Cola. It was impossible not to stop and stare. Rose’s had Barbies— what felt like an entire aisle of them. Across from the Barbies were the GI Joes. They carried toy cars, model cars and trucks, red and blue wooden yo-yos, and a plethora of other toys! When I was five years old, Santa brought me a baby doll that cried, a crib, along with a Barbie, a set of cap guns with a holster, and a red cowgirl hat. It was magical in every sense of the word. That image has stayed with me for over six decades, and I suspect it will remain with me for the rest of my life. I’m sure there were bigger, more elaborate Christmas celebrations around town. But looking back now, it wasn’t the toys that mattered most. It was the feeling

It was sharing that magical time with my family … my four siblings when we were all so young. My oldest sister was only twelve. And my parents were young too—Dad was thirty-eight, Mom

Maybe it was because Jesus was to be the

great Shepherd. Or maybe they were the only ones who would believe the words of the angels. For whatever reason, God chose the shepherds. God turned their quiet pasture into an angelic symphony announcing the birth of God’s Son as the sky was filled with a multitude heavenly host praising God and announcing peace and good will toward men. Surrounded by a host of angels these quiet unassuming men were told that they would be the first to see the Messiah who had been born in Bethlehem, the city of David. In a moment they went from relaxing with their sheep to making a dash for Bethlehem! Their fears had now been transformed into great joy! There is one common thread that runs in the lives of the person in each of

these four angelic stories. It is thread of fear and uncertainty. Their stories are like all human stories: the complex interaction between faith and fear. In each story, the angel delivers a message that speaks to the heart of the fear that is in all of us. The angel of the Lord was quite aware of this. This is why the angel said in each situation “Fear not.” Don’t be afraid when you are looking for certainties in an uncertain life like Zacharias. God keeps His promises. Don’t be afraid when God singles you out of the crowd for something special like He did with Mary. Don’t be afraid when life seems out of control like Joseph and you’re not exactly sure what to do. These are times we need to rely upon the Lord Don’t be afraid when your

world is spinning a little too fast like the Shepherds. These are times we trust the Lord and follow His direction. Now I realize it’s easier to say “don’t be afraid” than to actually not be afraid. Each angelic announcement was good news. The good news for us is this: God is always with those who have trusted in His Son as Savior and Lord. As we call upon Him to forgive us of our sins and receive Him into our lives as Savior, we become adopted into the family of God. This is just the first step of faith. Let me encourage you to unite with a local church if you have not already so you can give Him a life of service. God wants to bless you with His presence this Christmas. Joy to the world! The Lord is come!

Harlow makes it home for Christmas By Jean Gordon This is a story of how a cat named Harlow, lost 426 days following Hurricane Helene, found her way home in plenty of time for the holidays. On September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene brought historic rain and winds to Western North Carolina destroying homes, businesses, devastating families and forever changing the landscape in so many areas. The Hickory Nut Gorge was devastated. The Rocky Broad River flooded, destroying everything in its path and forever changing lives. Progress is ongoing in restoring homes, businesses, families and pets. Recently a black cat was spotted living under a home on Red Anderson Road, Bat Cave, just beyond Chimney Rock Village. Mary Jaeger-Gale, a resident in Bat Cave, noticed

Elizabeth Bunch Hunter (July 8, 1946 – December 14, 2025)

Elizabeth Bunch Hunter, known affectionately as Libby, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 14, 2025. Born in Norton, Virginia on July 8, 1946, Libby spent her early days with her family in Big Stone Gap and Charlottesville, Virginia. They moved to Kings Mountain, NC when Libby was in the 5th grade. She graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1964 and attended Winthrop College where she met her lifelong friends, Linda and Tricia. After college Libby entered the workforce, beginning her career at Stearns Catalytic in Charlotte. She was a hard worker and was quickly promoted up the business hierarchy throughout her career as a senior purchaser and procurement manager. While at Flour she worked on U.S. Embassy projects

across the globe, and at J.A. Jones her primary project was the port in Morehead City. Libby also worked at several other engineering and design firms over the years, including Raytheon, Day & Zimmerman and Jacobs Engineering. Libby was loving but firm, caring but no pushover. As a young girl, her little brothers once picked a fight with her. She gave one of them a black eye that required a few stitches and left a permanent scar. They never picked on her again. That sense of strength and fortitude served as a core value that followed Libby throughout her life. Things weren’t easy early on for a single mother raising two young children. She caught the eye of her future husband, Mike, when the two worked at Stearns Catalytic. He consoled her once when she was having a bad day and soon asked her out on a date for ice cream. They hit it off and were married in 1988. Mike and Libby were two peas in a pod, and they never left each other’s side. Together, they raised two children, Kelly and Kris, and taught them values that we can only wish every child could receive from their parents. Libby is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Mike; their two children Kelly Huber and her husband Grant, and Kris Gardner and his wife Jennie; four grandchildren

(Kathleen, Liam, Alexander and Phebe); brothers Philip and his wife Diane, Wendell and his wife Karen, and Johnny and his wife Terri; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Kelly and Bernice Bunch. A celebration of Libby’s life was held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Eddie Tharpe officiating, followed by a graveside service at Mountlawn Memorial Park with family and close friends. The family received friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable contribution to Novant Health Foundation, Remarkable Care Fund for KMC, 1701 S. Hawthorne Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. Jaeger-Gale thinking the “found cat” could be her Harlow. Eva has a cabin upstream from the river and assumed all three of her cats drowned during the historic storm. When Deaton noticed a few distinctive markings on the cat, Eva sent an identifying photo to Deaton for a positive identification. Just like a miracle, Harlow, the cat gone for 426 days and presumed to have drowned, had made it uphill to safety then traveled down to the next road downstream. She was reunited with mom Eva. The residents are still hoping the other two cats, Leo and Mango, may still be in the area searching for their owners. Reach out to Deaton if anyone has seen them. The miracle of Harlow being gone 426 days is still being talked about in the Gorge as the season of hope is all around.

RECIPES NO BAKE COOKIES

Lisa Harper - Belmont, NC 1-1/3 cups peanut butter 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder 2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut flakes 2 Tablespoons melted butter 1 Tablespoon of sugar

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the peanut butter, vanilla extract and cocoa powder until smooth. Add the shredded coconut flakes and sugar; mix well. Scoop 1 tablespoon size spoonfuls onto a parchment lined sheet pan, or any container that will fit in your freezer. Freeze for a minimum of 25 minutes. Cut and separate the parchment paper while keeping the cookies in place, so that each cookie still has a piece of paper underneath (this keeps them from sticking together) Store in a sealed container in your fridge. Enjoy.

CHRISTMAS TREE POPS

Makes 24 cake pops 1 box vanilla cake mix 3⁄4 cup canola oil 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon milk 3 1⁄2 cups green candy melts 24 cake pop sticks Icing dots & Icing stars Prepare cake according to package instructions, adding 3⁄4 cup canola oil to the cake mix before baking. Once cake is cool to the touch, transfer to a large mixing bowl and break up into crumbs. Allow to cool completely. In a medium bowl, add butter, sugar, vanilla, and milk. Use an electric mixer and beat on medium speed for about 4 minutes until light and fluffy. Add 3⁄4 of the frosting to cake crumbs, mix until mixture can hold together. Refrigerate for one hour. Using your hands, shape cake pop mixture into 24 conical shapes. Melt green candy melts. Dip one end of each of the cake pop sticks into the melted chocolate before inserting into the bottom of the cake pops. Dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate, making sure to cover completely, allowing excess to drip back into bowl. Use a toothpick to create the textured look of the tree and decorate with the icing dots and stars before standing upright to dry completely.

Animal advocate Deaton, who works to reunite animals with owners, also filed a “found report” with the Henderson County Animal Shelter. When there were no solid leads on the owner of the cat, Jaeger-Gale found a potential home for the cat after making several contacts asking if anyone wanted to re-home the friendly cat. Before taking the cat to a neighbor who was willing to make a new home for the stray, the cat was taken to veterinarian Bonnie Brae for a well check-up. The cat was healthy and about to go to a new owner. Then came a twist in the story, said Jaeger-Gale. Eva Kenney Zautra, of Henderson and also Bat Cave, lost three cats during the storm and she reached out to Deaton and

Reduce oven to 350F and continue to roast until thickest part of thighs register at least 160F on an instant-read thermometer, 2 to 21⁄2 hours; baste turkey every 15 to 20 minutes with warm chicken stock.

Remove from oven and let rest, loosely tented with aluminum foil, for at least 30 minutes before serving on a bed of cranberries and bay leaves.

11, 2025 edition of the Rutherford Weekly, one of our sister publications. NASCAR superstar Greg Biffle’s 18th annual Triple B 100 dirt track race was held December 6 at the Triple B Ranch in Rutherfordton. This was a 100 lap dirt race open to the public for a $20 donation per car at the

gate, as there were no tickets sold. Along with the race cars there were food trucks as well. All the grilled cheese sandwiches were donated by Mike Ringquist, with those monies going to the Lake Norman Humane Society. The event was even streamed online for those that couldn’t make it.

Understanding Social Security Spousal Benefits Dear Savvy Senior, How do Social Security spousal benefits work? My wife, who’s approaching age 62, has had a few small-paying jobs over the years, but spent most of her time as a homemaker. What is she entitled to? Primary Breadwinner Dear Breadwinner, Spousal benefit questions are among the most frequently asked and confusing parts of Social Security. The rules that govern qualifying and claiming are knotty, and there are many exceptions. But understanding how these benefits work is crucial for maximizing your family’s retirement income. Here’s what you should know. What Are Spousal Benefits? Social Security spousal benefits are designed to provide retirement income to spouses who either didn’t work or worked sporadically/part-time and earned significantly less than their spouses over their working lifetime. A stay-athome parent is a good example of a spousal benefit recipient. Who’s Qualifies? To qualify for spousal benefits, you and your wife must meet three conditions:

Your wife must be at least age 62; you must be married for a year or more; and you must already be collecting your retirement benefits. Different rules apply for ex-spouses. Ex-spouses (if you were married for at least 10 years and are not remarried) can receive a spousal benefit based on an exspouse’s record even if your ex has not yet filed for their own benefits, but your ex must be age 62 or older. How Much Are Spousal Benefits? The amount your wife would get for spousal benefits will depend on your earning’s history and her claiming age. The maximum spousal benefit is 50 percent of your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), which is that amount you’re entitled to at full retirement age benefit (FRA). But your wife will only get that much if she waits until her full retirement age to file, which is 67 if she was born in 1960 or later. Unfortunately, spousal benefits cannot be increased by her waiting beyond FRA, but they are reduced by taking them early. So, for example, if your wife were to start collecting her spousal benefits at age

62 (the earliest possible age), she would collect only 32.5 percent of your PIA. To calculate exactly how much your wife’s spousal benefits would be reduced by taking them before her FRA see SSA. gov/OACT/quickcalc/spouse.html. You also need to know that because spousal benefits are based on your PIA, even if you (the primary earner) retire early, before you reach your FRA, your wife’s spousal benefit will not be reduced. Just as they will not increase if you delay claiming your benefits beyond your FRA. You should also note that if your wife worked and is entitled to benefits on her own work record, but it’s less than what she’s entitled to as a spouse, Social Security will pay her the higher of the two amounts, but not both. Survivor Benefits In addition to spousal benefits Social Security also pays survivor benefits to spouses and ex-spouses starting at age 60 (50 if disabled). So, if your wife outlives you, she’ll be able to switch from her spousal bene-

fits to survivor benefits and receive a higher payment. Survivor benefits range between 71.5 and 100 percent of the deceased’s benefit, based on your wife’s age when she claims. There is, however, one exception. Surviving spouses and ex-spouses that are caring for a child (or children) of the deceased worker, and they are under age 16 or disabled, are eligible to receive 75 percent of the worker’s benefit amount at any age.
