Cleveland County Philanthropic Network Launches to Strengthen Local Nonprofits

A new collaborative effort, the Cleveland County Philanthropic Network(CCPN), has been established to advance the capacity, sustainability, and collective action of nonprofit organizations serving Cleveland County. The Cleveland County Philanthropic Network brings together a coalition of local non-fund raising grant makers and community conveners committed to working collaboratively to better serve the nonprofit community. Members of CCPN include: Dover Foundation, Hospice Cleveland County Foundation, Catawba Nation Foundation, Healthy Together Cleveland, Albemarle Corporation, and the Cleveland County Community Foundation (Foundation For The Carolinas). “This collaborative is about more than funding, it’s about creating opportunities for local nonprofits to strengthen relationships, share knowledge, while also learning about the challenges and opportunities within our community,” said Emily Arey, speaking on behalf of the Cleveland County Philanthropic Network. “We believe our community is strongest when nonprofits are empowered to work together and share knowledge that benefits all.” "In other communities we serve, collaborative networks like this have helped nonprofits break down silos, share resources, and build lasting partnerships. We are excited to see that same spirit

of connection taking root in Cleveland County,” said Rhonda Dean from Foundation For The Carolinas. As part of its mission, CCPN will host its first major initiative, “Empower Together: An Engagement Workshop,” on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This invite-only event is open exclusively to nonprofit organizations serving Cleveland County and will provide nonprofit leaders with a morning of professional development, peer exchange, and networking. The workshop will feature two interactive sessions: Community Voice led by Helen Hope Kimbrough, Senior Director, Next Stage Consulting Budgeting to Empower led by Tina Cheney, Finance Director, Catawba Nation Foundation. Registration opens Monday, August 25, 2025. To confirm your nonprofit organization’s eligibility or to learn more about the event, please contact Emily Arey at emily@hospiceccfoundation. org or Amanda Gragg atagragg@doverfdn. org. About the Cleveland County Philanthropic Network. The Cleveland County Philanthropic Network is a collaborative of local non-fundraising grant makers and community conveners working to strengthen Cleveland County’s nonprofit organizations through strategic professional development and community-focused engagements.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Here’s one from a few years ago that I just needed to share again) Next week I’m going on my annual trip to Missouri. I’ve been hunting deer there for years and have some wonderful friends there. My memories are many. I think about everything from the times of extreme weather (one time I hunted without a shirt) to trying to find my lost deer with a famous deer dog, that happened to be a dachshund. I can remember seeing some monster bucks just out of range and missing some within range. But no matter what the past held; I still look forward to going back each year. My present memory, however, is one of only a couple of years ago. I was a few weeks away from knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. My memory is of constant pain, especially as I walked to and from my tree stand. Even though the walks were not long, the effort it took to make them seemed especially difficult and slow. As I made those trips each day, I was always reminded of a title to a book I saw one time. It was called “Leading With A Limp.” And while I never read that book (I probably should) I imagined a plethora of subjects the author might be trying to convey. Here’s what leading with a limp means to me.

It means every leader is imperfect. We have difficulties, inabilities, failures, discouragements, disappointments, and insecurities. And while none of these stop us, they cripple us enough to cause us to lean on something we could not do without. They also humble us, making us realize the possibility of any success comes from places beyond ourselves. Limping leadership also slows us done in order to make sure we never outpace those we are called to lead. After all, leaders are only leaders if they have followers. And Limping leaders love more because we become more patient and understanding with everyone else’s disability. Our example of this kind of leadership in the New Testament is Paul. He had a limp and asked God to take it away. God didn’t for some of the same reasons I mention above. Here’s how Paul recalls his prayer.

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinth 12:8-10 NIV) It is believed Paul wrote most of the New Testament. He did it with a limp. That means your limp does not disqualify you. It is the most important part of your resume.

Got Music? We Do... Join us!

“Music is for everybody. It’s a river we can all put our cups into, drink it and be sustained by it! ………… John Williams, composer of Star Wars.

Did you know that Shelby has a music club???? Yes! It is probably one of the oldest organizations in our city! It began on October 22, 1913 at the home of Mrs. Pansy Fetzer, a fulfilled dream of two young piano teachers, Mrs. Madge Riley and Mrs. J. L. Suttle along with 13 charter members!

The Cleveland County Arts Council now houses all the records of the club, such as minutes, newspaper articles, histories by club presidents!

The purpose of the club is to promote musical culture among its members and throughout the city of Shelby. From the first organization and up to 1943, meetings were held every two weeks in the

homes of the members, who also presented programs of live concerts, wrote and presented papers and gave talks on musical subjects. From the very beginning the club established a memorial piano fund to help purchase pianos for schools. Shelby High School received a piano in 1934 and another in 1949. Again in 1976 the club helped raise funds for a Baldwin Concert Grand for the Malcolm E. Brown School /Civic Auditorium at Shelby High School. They also helped form the Community Concert Series. In 1986 the Music Club established the Cecilia Scholarship Fund to assist a high school graduate from Cleveland County to pursue music in college. It is still available to students today!!

Currently, our club holds short meetings (3:15-4:30 pm) on the first Thursday of each month from September through May at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library, 104 Howie Dr. in Shelby. Our

Extension Master Gardener Program begins soon.

If you have a passion for gardening, the Extension Master GardenerSM Program can help you improve your horticultural knowledge, hone your gardening skills, and join a team of more than 60 trained volunteers who are excited about lifelong learning and educating Cleveland County residents on environmentally conscious, research-based horticultural information

from NC State and NC A&T State universities. The 2025 course will be offered on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm beginning August 20 and ending November 19 (14 consecutive weeks) at the Cleveland County Extension Center, located at 130 S. Post Road in Shelby, NC. The cost to participate is $125.

Act quickly because preregistration is required by August 15th.

membership is open to anyone who loves music. Our outstanding program director is Mr. Kenneth Brooks, retired choral teacher and conductor of the award-winning Crest High School Chorus and now currently conductor of the Cleveland County Choral Society. Mr. Brooks seeks out a wide variety of local and nearby musicians to present short concerts displaying their talents in different genres, instruments, and styles as solos or in groups.

The meeting also includes light refreshments, a short business meeting, a “feature” (a short talk presented by a member on a subject that is important to him or her), and a “hymn of the month”, also presented by a member. Sometimes we might even have a “sing-a-long”! S0000…….. please come check us out on Thursday, September 4, 3:15 pm at the Cleveland County Library!!

Live Out Loud

TO SCHOOL” Series)

We all know that school, jobs, and other secular places can be challenging environments. People can be rude or expose us to many ungodly ideas and actions. However, in the midst of it all, Jesus calls us to be a light. In Matthew 5:14-16 (AMP), He proclaims, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and recognize and honor and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Submission Living out this light requires submission to God’s will and ways through the Holy Spirit. He is our comforter and guide. Without His beautiful fruit, we are left with our sinful, selfish, and prideful natures. But when we do not let our carnal natures lead us, others can expe-

rience the glory of God shining brightly in our lives. Galatians 5:22-23 (AMP) states, “But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, inner peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Excellence

One way to live out loud is through our excellence. Daniel in the Bible was not just a prayer warrior and prophet; he was an excellent student and employee. Even his haters, those jealous of him, could find nothing wrong with his character. Daniel 6:4 (NLT) says, “Then the other administrators and high officers began searching for some fault in the way Daniel was handling government affairs, but they couldn’t find anything to criticize or condemn. He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy.” In the end, his enemies fell into the trap they set for him, and Daniel’s boss, the king, declared that Daniel’s God was the true God. That is powerful! How many people will come to Christ simply by watching how

you live out loud? Please don’t ever forget that your life is a testimony of God’s goodness, and your example can lead others into His kingdom.

Let’s Pray:

“Father, you are worthy of all the glory and honor. Please forgive me for not representing you well, because I chose to let my flesh be in charge instead of you. I ask that you would help me to live a life that is full of the light of Christ. I pray that others will watch my life and be drawn to you. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

STEAM TRAIN EXCURSION THROUGH SMOKY MOUNTAINS

On Saturday, September 6th, 2025, the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum will sponsor a steam train excursion on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. This is a wonderful opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of Western North Carolina while riding the rails behind a steam engine in vintage passenger railroad cars.

The #1702 locomotive dates back to 1943. The engine’s construction was an officially commissioned WWII steam engine plan. It is of the world’s largest engine class and is one of two remaining in the United States.

The one-day excursion will cover most of the operating trackage of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. The track follows the route of the former Southern Railway’s Murphy Branch Line, established in 1891, with its five percent grade and many bridges. Our scenic steam excursion takes us from the historic depot in Bryson City, NC, through the beautiful countryside of Western North Carolina, into the breath-taking Nantahala Gorge surrounded by the majestic Smokies, and back to Bryson City. Much of the route hugs the banks of the Little Tennessee and Nantahala Rivers. It crosses Fontana Lake on a trestle spanning 780 feet 100 feet above the lake.

Passengers ride in comfort in FIRST CLASS, CROWN CLASS, TOURIST COACH, or OPENAIR cars. All classes offer seating in classic antique restored passenger cars. There are restrooms throughout the train.

FIRST CLASS: Cars are climate-controlled and feature large windows and lounge-car seating. Includes lunch options. CROWN CLASS: Cars offer large windows and climate control for passenger comfort.

TOURIST COACH CLASS: Cars have ceiling fans and windows that open and close for fresh air viewing.

OPEN-AIR COACH: Cars are great for picture-taking and “experiencing” the ride and scenery. Passengers have two options for arrival at the Bryson City Train Depot: Ride a chartered tour bus out of Johnson City, TN (Liberty Bell Middle School), or drive directly

to Bryson City, NC, if that is more convenient. Schedule for passengers.

Arrive in Bryson City, NC by 11:00 am Board Train 11:15am Train Departs 12:01pm Arrives back to Bryson City 4:30 pm.

TICKETS:

FIRST CLASS: Ticket price $185. CROWN CLASS: Ticket price is $126/adult and $98/child [2 -12] .

MEAL OPTIONS:

BOX LUNCH: $16.00. Includes sandwich, Ms. Vickie’s Kettle chips, Grandma’s chocolate Pecan pieces, and crunchy fresh celery. CONCESSIONS CAR: Sandwiches, drinks, chips, and snacks will be available for purchase on board.

BRING YOUR OWN: A small cooler is acceptable if you wish to bring food with you. Tickets and pre-purchased meals must be ordered online by credit card at http://www. wataugavalleynrhs.org/.
