Rodeo Polkville’s 25th anniversary event promises plenty

For 363 days a year the NC182 and NC226 crossroads community of Polkville is peaceful, but two days each June for over 20 years that pastoral persona perishes when Polkville Baptist Church puts on its action-packed annual Rodeo Polkville.

This year’s 25th annual event is slated for Friday June 20 and Saturday 21st. Gates at the 6000-seat Mintz Arena behind the church opens at 6pm and the on-field excitement cranks up at 8pm. Ages 13 and up at gate are $20 and advance tickets are $17. Ages 12 and under are free. The show wraps up around 10pm each night.

The church hires Charlottebased Rafter 3 Rodeo Co. to stage the event and it’s sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association. The event has numerous sponsors with two of the largest being CPS

Construction Services and Piedmont Chimney & HVAC.

RODEO

'From Page 1 work smoothly.

“We operate like a welloiled machine,” said church member and rodeo coordinator Beth Ann Blanton.

The rodeo’s roots go back to 1999 when Polkville Baptist congregants pitched in to help Hurricane Floyd victims in Eastern North Carolina. To raise funds for the project, the idea for a benefit rodeo was hatched by Garry “Guru” Davidson who was a retired rodeo clown. The first rodeo was such a hit it was decided to make it an annual tradition. In 2000 a field behind the church was designated Mintz Arena in honor of Fred Mintz who was also one of the event founders and the rodeo has been held there ever since.

This year, as in years past, Rodeo Polkville will have plenty of action to

see. Events slated for 2025 include bareback bronco riding, saddle bronco riding, calf roping, cowgirl calf roping, steer wrasslin’, team roping, cowgirl barrel racing, bull ridin’, trick riding, and trick roping.

Other arena action will be a rodeo clown show by Kyler “Bam Bam” Collins, patriotic flag parade, and other Western-style wonderment.

Rodeo participants come from far and wide to show off their skills. Out-of-state locales represented will include Gainesville, Georgia; Seneca, South Carolina; Stephenville, Texas; and Knoxville, Tennessee. Tar Heel contenders will come from places like Thomasville, Mooresville, and downhome Cleveland County to name a few.

Rodeo-goers who feel inspired can even climb up on a variable-speed mechanical bull for a spin.

Watching folks wrasslin’ bulls, roping running calves, and riding bucking horses works up a kingsize appetite and Rodeo Polkville will have plenty of eats, drinks, and treats available. The church will have a big concession stand and food

trucks galore will be there. Just a few of the choices include that Cleveland County delicacy- fried livermush sammiches, also fried baloney sammiches, hot dogs (high class hot dogs), barbecue, hamburgers, ice cream, fries, chicken strips, and most any other grub you might find at a county fair.

“Bring your appetite,” Blanton said.

In addition to the eats, other vendors will be offering Western wear, and a variety of souvenirs. The church will be selling commemorative t-shirts.

But Rodeo Polkville is not just about entertainment. Its main reason for being is a nod to its roots a quarter century ago- raising money for missions.

“Our goal has always been to give away as much of the profit as possible for missions,” said church member and rodeo volunteer Kim

Missions that Polkville Baptist sponsor are on a local, state, national, and even international level. Places the church has assisted as are as far-flung as Cherokee, N.C. to Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico. Just a few other spots include Alaska, Ukraine, and Nepal. From disaster assistance to helping elderly folks repair their homes, Polkville Baptist is on the scene.

“We try to be a blessing to our community as we provide resources not only to our congregation, but to missionaries locally and worldwide,” said Pastor Will Davis.

Looking for a fantastic, family-oriented event that will tickle your innards, give you the chance to yell yeehaw to your heart’s content, and help further God’s work? Then make your way to Rodeo Polkville.

Cleveland Community College Celebrates Record-Breaking Graduating Class for Third Consecutive Year

Cleveland Community College proudly celebrated a historic milestone on Thursday, May 15, recognizing its largest graduating class for the third consecutive year. A total of 891 graduates earned 1,292 credentials, surpassing last year’s record by more than 200. “These graduates recognized the value and opportunity their community college offers,” said President Dr. Jason Hurst. “They worked hard and persevered, and now they are ready to start the next phase of their life journey. We are so proud of all these graduates and are excited to watch them flourish.”

Dr. Hurst gave special recognition to the high school students who were among this year’s graduates.

Through CCC’s partnership with Cleveland County Schools and Pinnacle Classical Academy, these students earned their college credentials before receiving their high school diplomas. A

total of 359 credentials were awarded to these high school students.

Also recognized during the ceremony was CCC’s 2025 Academic Excellence Award recipient, Ben Jeffries. Thirty years after graduating high school, Jeffries enrolled at CCC because he realized he was missing out on job opportunities. "It was a challenge to start college after so many years of being out of school and working fulltime, but it has been a wonderful experience," he said. Jeffries graduated with an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration and a 4.0 GPA. He plans to continue his education at North Carolina A&T University, majoring in supply chain management.

The commencement ceremony featured a heartfelt keynote address by recently retired Sociology instructor Allen Dunkleman. He recalled enrolling in community college at age 36 because

of a persistent friend who believed in him—an act that changed the course of his life. He also shared how, more than 20 years ago, “this great community college made a dream come true, helped magnify my potential, and has blessed my life beyond measure.” Dunkleman encouraged graduates to be grateful for and acknowledge those who support and help them throughout their life. He also wished them well saying, “May your experience here at Cleveland Community College, along with your degree, certificate, or diploma, propel you to greater heights as you continue to write and tell your life story.” Earlier in the week, CCC held two separate pinning ceremonies celebrating students from Health Sciences and Associate Degree Nursing programs.

During the Health Sciences pinning ceremony on May 12, 66 graduates from Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, Radiography, and Surgical Tech-

nology were honored. The following graduates received special recognition: Medical Assisting Outstanding Graduate: Christa Martin. Radiography Academic Excellence Award: Jackie White. Radiography Clinical Excellence Award: Tayler Shook. Radiography Outstanding Graduate Award: McKenna Pruitt.

Surgical Technology Academic Excellence Award (tie): Brittany Summey and Lavender Sams.

Surgical Technology Clinical Excellence Award: Sharlincia Bonner. Fifty-two associate degree nursing graduates were celebrated during a ceremony on May 13. Among the honorees: SkillsUSA winners: • First Place Medical Math: Ashley Buckton. • First Place Medical Terminology: Rachinda Barner. Outstanding Student Award: Macey Deering. Make A Difference Award: Jacob Eckard. Submitted by Paula Vess

Unique graduation gifts

preceded by prom for high schoolers, and for those bidding farewell to the hallowed halls of higher education, it may mean last-minute interviews and pre-commencement résumé-building. This whirlwind of activity culminates in a degree or diploma to wrap up years spent in the classroom.

Graduates have many things to look forward to this time of year, not the least of which are gifts from close friends and family. Those tasked with coming up with graduation gifts can take inspiration from these ideas that break the mold.

• Retirement account funds: Helping a new graduate get started is a popular

sentiment among gift givers, but it’s also possible to give grads a leg up on the future. Helping them to fund an individual retirement account can be a thoughtful gift. Keep in mind that parameters for IRAs differ between a traditional and a Roth IRA, and it is best to speak with a financial advisor to determine the best fit. Starting a retirement account early on can provide solid footing for financial security later in life.

• Quality luggage: A good set of luggage can often last a person a lifetime if properly cared for. Whether the grad is taking a much-needed trip after graduation or will be traveling for his or her career, the luggage will serve well.

• Student loan interest payment: Many students must rely on federal or private loans to offset the costs of attending college or even trade schools. Although a loved one may not be able to pay off the loans in their entirety, a good gift can be to make payments toward the interest on the loans so that the bill is reduced come graduation.

• Roadside assistance service: The road may take graduates near and far. A membership to a roadside assistance service can be a practical gift that ensures grads get from point A to point B with fewer hiccups. These services offer towing, tire changing, gas delivery, and more. Plus, they often come with additional perks, such as discounts on travel services and lodging.

• Professional course or tickets to a conference: Help support a graduate’s career growth and professional development with a subscription to a course, a book about their industry or tickets to a relevant conference or trade show.

• Travel: Grads can be treated to the gift of travel. An overseas adventure or an epic road trip across the country may be the perfect way to unwind after years of schooling.

Graduates are entering an exciting time in their lives when anything is possible. Gift givers can think outside the box when shopping for their favorite cap-andgown-donning loved ones.

A total of 891 graduates earned 1,292 credentials, surpassing last year’s record by more than 200.

Lafayette Street Church

Welcomes New Pastor

Garrison Begins Ministry with Focus on Community, Faith, and Renewal

Lafayette Street Church is pleased to welcome its new pastor, Rev. Tonya M. Garrison, who officially began leading the congregation in April. With a heart for service and a vision for spiritual renewal, Pastor Garrison brings a fresh energy and deep sense of purpose to the church.

Garrison comes to Lafayette with eight years of ministry experience, having previously served as Minister of Children and Minister of Christian Education at Florence Baptist Church (Forest City ) under the direction of Dr. Bobby Gantt.

Known for her “neon sign” theology, a practical preaching style, heartfelt pastoral care, and hands-on mission work, she is excited to lead a church deeply rooted in faith while looking ahead to what God has in store for the future.

“This is a new season, not just for me, but for all of us. I believe

God is already doing something beautiful in this church, and I’m humbled to be part of that work. My prayer is that Lafayette Street Church will be a place of healing, hope, and genuine connection for anyone who walks through our doors,” Pastor Garrison said. “I didn’t choose ministry as much as ministry chose me. God has placed a deep love in my heart for the church and for people. I believe the church should be a reflection of Christ’s grace— real, welcoming, and always reaching outward.”

Pastor Garrison holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Ministries and a Master’s Degree in Bible and Theology (MABT) from Gardner-Webb University. She is passionate about community outreach, intergenerational worship, family mentoring, biblical teaching, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. She, her husband Steve, and

daughter Emily reside in Bostic. The couple’s three grown children are Savannah (Roger) and Lauren (Justin) who reside in Madison County and Cameron (Kaitlin) who live in Washington State. There are three precious grandchildren.

Every Sunday is “Welcome Sunday” at Lafayette Street Church. Whether new to the area, returning to church, or just curious, there's always a place for everyone. Lafayette Street Church invites all to join in worship each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (Fellowship over coffee and donuts at 10 am). The church is located at 1420 S. Lafayette Street, Shelby. Rest

(Part 3 of “Mental Health”Series) Life can feel like a marathon, and sometimes our minds just need a breather. The story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:4-8 shows us how God offers rest as a beautiful gift to restore us, body and soul. Let’s dive into how God’s provision of rest can recharge our mental health, helping us find peace in His love.

The Breaking Point Elijah is at his breaking point, worn out from his work and running from danger, he sits under a tree, overwhelmed, and is ready to throw in the towel. 1 Kings 19:4-8 (NIV) says, “while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.” Sound familiar? We’ve all had moments when stress, worry, or exhaustion make us want to give up. But here’s the amazing

part: God doesn’t lecture Elijah or push him to keep going. Instead, He sends an angel with food, water, and a gentle nudge to sleep. Only after rest does God guide him forward. This shows us God cares about our whole selves—our tired minds included.

The Invitation Jesus invites us into this same rest in Matthew 11:28 (NIV): “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Isn’t that the warmest invitation? When anxiety piles up or your mind feels like it’s running on empty, Jesus says, “Come to Me.” His rest isn’t just a nap (though that helps!); it’s a deep, soul-soothing peace that comes from trusting Him. Whether it’s through prayer, a quiet moment, or stepping away from the hustle, God’s rest is a gift to steady our mental health. Taking care of our minds is a way to honor how God made us.

The Sabbath Rest isn’t lazy—it’s holy. God wove it into creation with the Sabbath (Genesis 2:2-3), showing us that pausing is part of His design. In our go-go-go world, it’s easy to feel like we have to earn rest, but God offers it freely. For

Elijah, rest came before the next step, and it can for us too. Maybe it’s a walk in the spring air, turning off your phone for an hour, or just sitting with a Psalm. These moments let God’s peace sink in, refreshing our minds for the journey ahead. Pick one restful practice this week—like a quiet walk, a tech-free evening, or a Sabbath moment and enjoy God’s rest.

Prayer:

Let’s Pray: “Lord, thank You for the gift of rest. When I’m overwhelmed, help me pause and find Your peace. Show me how to care for my mind as You cared for Elijah. Thank you for sustaining me. You know exactly what my weary heart needs. You are the Prince of Peace and I bring all my burdens to you. In Jesus name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Sav-ior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
