C. Lorance (“Rance”)

Henderson, L.H.D.

Raleigh, NC

1933-2025

Matthew 25:21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master’.”

Dr. C. Lorance (“Rance”) Henderson, loving patriarch to an adoring family, legendary storyteller, visionary leader in deaf education, U.S. Navy Veteran, tireless volunteer, and friend to all, passed away in Raleigh, NC on July 21, 2025.

Rance was born in Kings Mountain, NC, on April 23, 1933, to Henry Loray and Lillian Camp Henderson both of whom worked at a local textile mill. He was the oldest of six children and spent most of his childhood living in a mill village.

After graduating from Kings Mountain High School and working as a meat cutter (eventually earning the Journeyman Meat Cutter designation), he joined the U.S. Navy “Seabees” and helped build the U.S. Naval Air Station Cubi Point, Subic Bay (Phillipines).

In 1957, he returned to Kings Mountain to marry Betty Ledford, his high school sweetheart. After a honeymoon in Bat Cave, NC, Rance followed Betty to Salem, Oregon, to join her in a career in deaf education.

Born with a passion for service and education, Rance earned degrees from Western Oregon University (B.S. and M.S.), California State University at Northridge (M.A.), and Gardner-Webb University, where he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

At the culmination of his distinguished career, Rance served as Superintendent of the North Carolina School for the Deaf (Morganton) and Director of the North Carolina Schools for the Deaf. Before that, his professional journey included leadership roles at the Oregon State School for the Deaf (including time as football coach and track and field coach) and West Suburban Association for the Hearing Handicapped (Illinois). He authored numerous influential articles on deaf education and was a sought-after speaker and thought leader in his field. His innovative work as a teacher, coach, and administrator helped shape generations of students and teachers in the deaf community nationwide.

Rance’s dedication extended far beyond the classroom and school administration. A committed civic leader, he served on numerous boards and committees including Gardner-Webb University, Boy Scouts of America (Piedmont Council), Burke County United Way, N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the N.C. Partnership for Children (Smart Start), Lake James Task Force, and the Morganton Kiwanis Club. His deep involvement with First Baptist Church of Morganton included leadership in youth and family ministries, stewardship, and Christian education.

Rance received numerous honors in recognition of his exceptional professional and volunteer work including the NC Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the BSA Silver Beaver Award, the BSA Silver Shepherd Award, Kiwanian of the Year (Morganton), the Distinguished Service Award from Lenoir-Rhyne College, and (with Betty) the N.C. Baptist Heritage Award.

Rance was full of life and enjoyed many things including his grandchildren and great grandchildren; UNC sports (especially basketball); hosting gatherings at their house at Lake James; teaching others how to water ski; woodworking; all kinds of food especially corn on the cob, Chick-Fil-A

peach milkshakes, oyster stew, and cornbread and buttermilk; classic country and western music (especially Willie Nelson!) and traveling (countless adventures including trips to Europe, Alaska, New England, NYC, the Upper Peninsula, and Barcelo Maya).

Rance and Betty lived in Morganton, NC, for 50 years, where they created lifelong friends and memories. In 2020, they moved to the Magnolia Glen retirement community in Raleigh to be closer to their children. They immediately involved themselves in the MG community and, in turn, the community embraced them.

Rance is survived by the love of his life, senior prom date, and wife of 67 years: Betty Ledford Henderson. Also, son David (Sherri), daughter Julie (Rod), five grandchildren (Jessica (Brad), James (Regan), Andrew (Lauren), Sarah (Dustin), and Abbie (Will)), and six great grandchildren (Jackson, Oliver, Luke, Elsie Jo, Charlie, and Morgan). Also, sister Kay Davis, sisters-in-law Mary Henderson and Jill Ledford, and brothers-in-law Jerry Ledford, and Jerry Rikard, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Rance”.

The family wishes to thank the staff at UNC REX Hospital and UNC REX Rehabilitation for their caring, attentive care of Rance during his last days. Also, many thanks to the staff and residents of Magnolia Glen for their love and support of Rance and Betty.

Celebration of Life services were held at: Magnolia Glen, 5301 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612, on Friday, July 25, at 2:00 p.m., and First Baptist Church, 502 W. Union St, Morganton, NC 28655, Saturday, July 26, at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Gardner Webb University, PO Box 997, Boiling Springs, NC 28017. Designation: Henderson-Ledford Scholarship Fund or Foothills Conservancy of NC, 204 Avery Ave, Morganton, NC 28655.

Eric Rodney Rogers

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Our beloved father passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in 1935 to Vade Frank and Lorena Wilson Rogers, he was a native to the Charlotte area. He was a proud member of the Navy from 1953-1957, during which time he lived in Hawaii and worked as an aircraft mechanic. His time in the Navy began one of his lifelong loves –working on airplanes and especially engines. “His” airplane was an A26, but he loved all airplanes and especially loved flying.

In 1958, he married Kaye Caroline Jones, and they enjoyed 53 years together before she passed away in 2012. He was lucky enough to find love a second time and was married to Frances Daphine Putnam for nearly 10 years before her passing in March of 2025.

He was an amazing man with so many talents they are hard to name. Although he was first and foremost a husband and father, he enjoyed numerous hobbies throughout his life. Along with his passion for airplanes and his mechanical skills, he enjoyed diving in Florida and in North Carolina lakes, archery, fishing, boating, camping, traveling and hunting. He was an avid pet owner, and most evenings could be found relaxing in his recliner with one of the multiple cats that loved him over the years.

However, none of his hobbies compared to his love of motorcycles. He rode dirt bikes for many years in the NC mountains before trading in his dirt bike for a Honda Goldwing. He was a member of several riding clubs over the years and he and his wife, Kaye, made many friends that way. He rode his Goldwing until he was 89 years of age and regretfully gave it up not long before he turned 90.

In June of 2025 he celebrated his 90th birthday. Despite being in the hospital, he was surrounded by family. There were whispers in the hallway about “protocol” as at least 8 of us gathered in his small room where we ate cake and celebrated a life very well lived.

He is survived by his son Eric Rodney Rogers, Jr. (Cindy) of Monroe,

County Commissioners adopt the FY 2025–2026 budget

Board members sworn in for 2025 – 2027. Photo by CCBOE

At noon on Tuesday, July 22, board members were sworn in for the 2025-2027 term at the Cleveland County Board of Elections. Returning members H. Allen Langley (R), Mary Accor (D), Ali Paksoy (D), and Mary Grace Keller (R) were joined by new Chairman, J. Ronnie Whetstine (R). Whetstine replaces former Chairman Douglas Sharp (D), who served on the board for 12 years. The two-year terms began on Tuesday and will end on July 19, 2027, per NC Session Law 2024-57. The State Board of Elections appoints four members (2 Democrats, 2 Republicans) from a list provided by the political parties having the highest number of registered affiliates. The Chair is appointed by the State Auditor, Dave Boliek. Not more than three members of the Board of Elections shall be members of the same political party. The Cleveland County Board of Elections oversees all elections in Cleveland County including those for the fifteen municipalities in the county. The Board operates under the general supervision of the State Board of Elections and has quasi-judicial and policy-making authority over all aspects of elections and voter registration in Cleveland County. The principal functions of the office include voter registration, candidate filing, establishing election precincts and voting sites, appointing and training precinct officials, preparing and distributing ballots, maintaining voting equipment, canvassing and certifying the ballots cast in Cleveland County, candidate campaign finance compliance, and providing public information on elections and voting procedures.

In June, the Board of County Commissioners officially adopted the Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget. This annual budget represents a collaborative effort involving the Board of Commissioners, County staff from every department, and community partners. The budget document serves as the most important annual planning tool for Cleveland County, allocating and aligning limited resources with the vision, priorities, and goals established by the Board of Commissioners. A key responsibility for the Board is to demonstrate sound stewardship of taxpayers’ money while balancing the funding allocations to meet the expectations of our citizens.

The Fiscal Year 2025–2026 Budget included the additional requirement of balancing the budget in light of the results of the revaluation of real property and identifying a revenue-neutral tax rate. In broad terms, the formula for calculating a revenue-neutral tax rate includes two main variables: the value of your property multiplied by the tax rate. The property value is determined through an analysis of the real estate market, utilizing the schedule of values established by the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Among these variables, the Commissioners have oversight and direct input only over the tax rate. According to North

Carolina General Statute § 105–286, all one hundred counties in North Carolina must conduct a reappraisal of all real property at least once every eight years. Additionally, Cleveland County and other counties with populations greater than 75,000 must conduct a reappraisal if the county's sales assessment ratio falls below 85% or exceeds 115%. The sales assessment ratio compares actual market values with the county’s assessed value. Cleveland County follows a four-year revaluation cycle, which prevented the sales assessment ratio of 74.98% (in 2024) from necessitating a revaluation on its own.

There are over forty unique and distinct taxing districts in Cleveland County. The Board of Commissioners has the authority to adjust and set tax rates for only three of these districts. Taxing districts, which the Commissioners do not control, include fifteen municipalities and Cleveland Water. The Commissioners oversee the County’s tax rate, the school tax

rate, and the Fire District tax rate. However, after setting the tax rates for the School and Fire Districts, the County only collects and transfers the revenues to these districts. The respective districts then utilize these revenues to provide services. For Fiscal Year 2025–2026, the County’s tax rate is 40.5 cents, which is three cents below revenue neutral and 14.25 cents lower than the Fiscal Year 2024–2025 rate. The school tax rate is 14.0 cents, which is three cents above revenue neutral, while the Fire District tax rate is 7.0 cents, which is revenue neutral. Overall, the combined County and School District tax rates are revenue-neutral.

For context, approximately 81% of Cleveland County’s budget is directly tied to program mandates or funding mandates dictated by the State of North Carolina. The Fiscal Year 2025–2026 Budget reflects a decrease of approximately $4.5 million from the Fiscal Year 2024–2025 General Fund. Additionally, the tax revenues projected for Fiscal Year 2025–2026 are expected to be around $1.5 million lower than the current year’s tax revenues.

New Federal Tax deductions for working Americans and seniors

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into U.S. law on July 4 (Public Law 119-21), takes effect for 2025. It includes several tax breaks for working and senior Americans.

No Tax on Tips

Effective for 2025 through 2028, employees and self-employed individuals may deduct qualified tips received in occupations that are listed by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as customarily and regularly receiving tips on or before December 31, 2024, and that are reported on a Form W-2, Form 1099, or other specified statement furnished to the individual or reported directly by the individual on Form 4137.

“Qualified tips” are voluntary cash or charged tips received from customers or through tip sharing.

The maximum annual deduction is $25,000; for self-employed individuals, the deduction may not exceed an individual’s net income (without regard to this deduction) from the trade or business in which the tips were earned.

The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).

GOLF

From Page 1A a golf cart while it is in operation.

• Golf carts that are issued permits to operate under this chapter may only be used from sunrise to sunset, unless equipped with the appropriate safety features required for nighttime operation.

• Age and Licensing: The new rules stipulate that only individuals aged 16 and above, with a valid driver’s license, are permitted to operate golf carts on public roads. This change aims to ensure that operators have the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate traffic safely.

• A driver or operator 18 years of age or older with a medical or physical condition that prevents them from obtaining a valid state driver’s license may be eligible to operate a golf cart. The medical condition must be evidenced by professional, certified medical proof that indicates that the condition prevents the driver or operator from taking a driver’s licensing exam. The medical professional must document that the operator does not possess a medical condition that would prevent the safe operation of a motor vehicle, and this documentation must be updated annually. Any driver or operator exempt from the requirement of a valid state driver’s license must still present and have a valid state identification card, which must be in their possession while operating a golf cart.

The tax deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers.

Self-employed individuals in a Specified Service, Trade, or Business (SSTB) under section 199A are not eligible. Employees whose employer is in an SSTB are also not eligible.

Taxpayers must include their Social Security Number on the return and file jointly if married, to claim the deduction.

Employers and other payors must file information returns with the IRS (or the SSA) and furnish statements to taxpayers showing the amount of specific cash tips received and the occupation of the tip recipient.

By October 2, 2025, the IRS will publish a list of occupations that “customarily and regularly” received tips on or before December 31, 2024. The IRS will also provide transition relief for tax year 2025 to taxpayers claiming the deduction, as well as to employers and payors subject to the new reporting requirements.

No Tax on Overtime

Effective for 2025 through 2028, individuals who receive qualified overtime compensation may now deduct the pay that exceeds

• Designated Routes: The ordinance designates specific routes and areas where golf carts are allowed to operate. These routes are primarily within residential neighborhoods and areas with lower traffic volumes. Golf carts shall be operated within a two-mile radius of the owners’ residence or place of business.

• Golf carts are prohibited from using major thoroughfares and high-speed roads to minimize the risk of collisions with larger vehicles. Golf carts are subject to the state’s traffic laws. a. All operators must adhere to all laws that apply to regular vehicle operation, to wit: stop signs, stop lights, oneway streets, and the like. All applicable alcohol laws will also be enforced. Golf carts will adhere to all traffic flow patterns and will operate on the right side of the roadway. c. Golf cart operators must yield the right-of-way to any overtaking vehicles. d. Golf carts shall not be operated on sidewalks. e. Golf carts shall not be operated on private property without the permission and consent of the property owner.

• Registration and Inspection: All golf carts must be registered with the city and undergo an annual safety inspection. This process ensures that the carts meet the required safety standards and are in good working condition. Registration also helps the city keep track of the number of golf carts in operation. Each owner must obtain a permit and/or sticker, which will be issued by the city, in-

their regular rate of pay, such as the “half” portion of “time-and-a-half” compensation, that is required by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and that is reported on a Form W-2, Form 1099, or other specified statement furnished to the individual.

The maximum annual deduction is $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers).

The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).

The deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers. Taxpayers must include their Social Security Number on the return and file jointly if married, to claim the deduction.

Employers and other payors are required to file information returns with the IRS (or SSA) and furnish statements to taxpayers showing the total amount of qualified overtime compensation paid during the year.

The IRS will provide transition relief for tax year 2025 to taxpayers claiming the deduction, as well as to employers and other payors subject to the new reporting requirements.

No Tax on Car Loan Interest

dicating that the golf cart has been authorized for operation on the city’s streets. The permit and/or sticker must be affixed to the golf cart in a prominent area for display during its operation. Permits/ stickers will be issued annually and shall be valid from July 1 of the year through June 30 of the following year. The annual fee for the permit/ sticker is $20. Any person who operates a golf cart in the city and fails to receive or correctly display a city permit/sticker will be subject to the state laws requiring registration, insurance, and any other applicable laws, in addition to being in violation of this chapter.

• There may be two golf cart permit applications per household made each year. For any number greater than two, approval must be obtained from the City Manager. All applicants for golf cart permits must be residents within the city limits.

• Speed Limits: The ordinance sets a maximum speed limit of 20 miles per hour for golf carts. This limit is designed to reduce the likelihood of accidents and ensure that golf carts operate at a safe speed within designated areas.

• Insurance: A golf cart permit applicant must be the owner of the golf cart and provide proof of liability insurance with the application, covering at least the minimum liability insurance requirements for operating other motor vehicles on the state’s streets and highways. Impact on Residents and Golf Cart Users

Effective for 2025 through 2028, individuals may also deduct interest paid on a loan used to purchase a qualified vehicle, provided the car is purchased for personal use and meets other eligibility criteria. (Lease payments do not qualify.)

The maximum annual deduction is $10,000.

The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $100,000 ($200,000 for joint filers). To qualify for the deduction, the interest must be paid on a loan that originated after December 31, 2024, was used to purchase a vehicle, and the original use of which starts with the taxpayer for a personal use vehicle (not for business or commercial use) and secured by a lien on the vehicle. Interest paid for used vehicle purchases does not qualify. If a qualifying vehicle loan is later refinanced, interest paid on the refinanced amount is generally eligible for the deduction.

A qualified vehicle is a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup truck, or motorcycle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds that has undergone final assembly in the United

The revised ordinance has several implications for Kings Mountain residents and golf cart users:

1. Enhanced Safety: The mandatory safety equipment and stricter age and licensing requirements are expected to significantly improve safety for both golf cart users and other road users. The increased visibility and better-equipped operators will help reduce the risk of accidents.

2. Compliance Costs: Residents who own golf carts will need to invest in the required safety equipment and ensure their carts pass the annual inspection. While this may involve some initial costs, the long-term benefits of improved safety and compliance with the law outweigh the expenses.

States. The location of final assembly will be listed on the vehicle information label attached to each vehicle on a dealer’s premises. Alternatively, taxpayers may rely on the vehicle’s place of manufacture as reported in the vehicle identification number (VIN) to determine if a car has undergone final assembly in the United States.

The VIN Decoder website, provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), offers information on the plant of manufacture. Taxpayers can follow the instructions on that website to determine if the vehicle’s place of manufacture was located in the United States. The VIN Decoder is publicly accessible at https://vpic.nhtsa.gov/ decoder/.

The deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers.

The taxpayer must include the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the qualified vehicle on the tax return for any year in which the deduction is claimed.

Lenders or other recipients of qualified interest must file information returns with the IRS and furnish statements to taxpayers

3. Restricted Mobility: The designated routes and speed limits may limit the areas where golf cart users can travel. However, these restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of all road users and prevent golf carts from operating in high-risk areas.

4. Community Awareness: The revised ordinance will likely raise awareness about the proper use of golf carts and the importance of adhering to safety regulations. This increased awareness can lead to a more responsible and conscientious community of golf cart users.

showing the total amount of interest received during the taxable year.

The IRS will provide transition relief for tax year 2025 for interest recipients subject to the new reporting requirements.

New Tax Deduction for Seniors Also effective for 2025 through 2028, individuals aged 65 and older may claim an additional deduction of $6,000. This new deduction is in addition to the current additional standard deduction for seniors under existing law. The $6,000 senior deduction is per eligible individual (i.e., $12,000 total for a married couple where both spouses qualify).

The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers).

To qualify for the additional deduction, a taxpayer must attain age 65 on or before the last day of the taxable year. The deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers. Taxpayers must include the Social Security Number of the qualifying individual(s) on the return, and file jointly if married, to claim the deduction.

5. City Oversight: The registration and inspection process will give the city better oversight of golf cart usage. This data can be used to make informed decisions about future regulations and improvements to the ordinance.

6. The revised golf cart ordinance in Kings Mountain represents a proactive approach to addressing the growing use of golf carts within the city. By implementing stricter safety requirements, designated routes, and registration processes, the city aims to create a safer environment for all residents. While the changes may require some adjustments and investments from golf cart owners, the overall benefits of enhanced safety and compliance with the law make the revisions a positive step forward for the community.

Congressman Tim Moore introduces legislation to redirect unspent IRS funds to border

Today, Congressman Tim Moore introduced the Securing Our Border Act to redirect unobligated Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funds toward border security measures. The funding was initially intended to hire 87,000 additional IRS enforcement agents.

“Our southern border was left wide open under the previous administration, and Americans paid the price with more drugs and more crime in our communities,” said Congressman Moore. “Thanks to President Trump, we’ve finally got a secure border again, but we need to keep it that way. The Securing Our Border Act gives our Border Patrol agents the resources and tools they need to finish the job.”

This legislation is cosponsored by Reps. Randy Weber (TX-14), Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), and Buddy Carter (GA-01).

security measures

This legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senator Tim Scott, who said, “Without borders, a nation is not a nation. President Biden’s ill-advised decision to supercharge the IRS while we had a crisis on our southern border couldn’t have been more out-of-touch or unnecessary. In just two weeks back in office, President Trump has signaled to the world that he is serious about securing our border and restoring peace and order in our communities. By redirecting these funds, we are taking steps to protect our national sovereignty and keep Americans safe.”

Specifically, the Securing Our Border Act would:

(1)Fund nonintrusive border inspections to prevent illicit drug and human trafficking into the United States; (2) Fund border wall

construction and technologies to bolster tracking and enforcement efforts along the southwestern border;

(3) Authorize CBP to offer bonuses to support the recruitment and retention of Border Patrol agents;

(4) Explicitly end Biden’s “catch and release” policy by requiring that aliens arriving from contiguous territories are returned to such territory or a safe third country, pending completion of immigration proceedings.

USPS warns Americans about “Brushing” scam

Everyone loves getting packages in the mail. But what if you didn’t order anything? This unexpected surprise could mean you’re a victim of a “brushing” scam.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is raising awareness of a growing danger to consumers, known as brushing scams. These new scams occur when consumers receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts fake customer reviews online to boost sales.

Recently, the USPS issued a press release in its attempts to safeguard the public from increasing consumer fraud and identity theft attacks. The release describes the agency’s continued efforts to protect the public from rising threats of phishing, smishing, and brushing scams.

“Combating mail theft and violent crimes against our employees is of the highest priority for the Postal Service and Postal Inspection Service,” said Acting Postmaster General and CEO Doug Tulino. “Through our continued, dedicated efforts, we are committed to making America’s mail system safer, from ensuring the protection of our letter carriers to making sure packages and mail make it to their destination safely and efficiently.”

During the 2024 holiday season, USPS and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) witnessed a surge in new, sophisticated phishing and smishing scams. Phishing involves deceiving consumers into divulging sensitive information through deceptive emails, while smishing uses misleading SMS messages to achieve the same goal. These phishing and smishing attacks may appear to be from the Postal Service, but they are not. Individuals should not interact with them under any circumstances.

Brushing scams, also a growing concern, involve sending unsolicited items to consumers from a seller who then posts fake customer reviews to boost sales. The USPS and USPIS warn the public that if they receive suspicious, unsolicited packages, it is critical to report them immediately to the Postal Inspection Service to help keep their personal data safe.

Fake reviews help fraudulently boost or inflate a product’s ratings and sales numbers, which the seller hopes will ultimately lead to an increase in actual sales. Since the merchandise is usually cheap and doesn’t cost much to ship, the scammers perceive this as a profitable payoff.

In some instances, the seller may call, attempting to persuade them to pay for the merchandise. Under the law, however, consumers aren’t required to pay for unsolicited merchandise.

According to the USPIS’s website, this kind of unsolicited merchandise is part of a larger brushing scam, which is illegal in the U.S. and many other countries. A person receives packages or parcels containing various items that were not ordered or requested by the recipient. While the package may be addressed to the recipient, it does not have a return address, or the return address could be that of a retailer. The sender of the item(s) is usually an international third-party seller who has found the recipient’s address online.

The intention is to give the impression that the recipient is a verified buyer who has written positive online reviews of the merchandise, meaning they write a fake review in your name. These counterfeit reviews help fraudulently boost or inflate the products’ ratings and sales numbers, which they hope will ultimately lead to an increase in actual sales. Since the merchandise is usually cheap and low-cost to ship, the scammers perceive this as a profitable payoff.

Recently, a new variation on the brushing scam has emerged, adding a component of “quishing.” Quishing, short for QR code phishing, uses a QR code that sends you to a fake website once you scan it. These websites appear legitimate and seem to be official sites of banks, government organizations, or other institutions. But they are fake sites used by criminals to scam your personal identifiable information (PII). Cards with QR codes are being sent inside packages as part of brushing scams. The QR code is sent under the guise that you need to scan it to find out who sent you the gift or to obtain more information about the company that sent it.

While it may appear to be a victimless crime, as the victim receives some free stuff in the mail, the reality is that your personal information may be compromised. Often, scammers obtain personal information through nefarious means and with ill intent, and use it for various scams and other illicit activities in the future.Your fake review may also prompt people to purchase worthless stuff.

In other instances, bad actors are using a person’s address and account information to deliver and receive merchan-

dise, then steal it from the home before the resident can intercept it. If you are the target of a brushing scam, the Inspection Service suggests taking these steps: Don’t pay for the merchandise - Avoid being swindled or talked into paying for it. Return to sender - If marked with a return address, and it is UNOPENED, you may mark it “RETURN TO SENDER” and USPS will return it at no charge to you.

Throw it away - If you have opened the package and no longer wish to keep the item, you may simply dispose of it in the garbage, provided it is safe to do so.

Keep it - If you open it and you like it, you may keep it. By law, you may keep unsolicited merchandise and are under no obligation to pay for it.

Change your account passwords - Your personal information may have been compromised.

Closely monitor - Keep a close eye on your credit reports and credit card bills.

Notify authorities - If the merchandise is organic (i.e., seeds, food, plants) or an unknown liquid or substance, notify the proper authorities and follow their instructions.

Notify the retailer - If unsolicited merchandise arrives from Amazon, eBay, or another third-party seller, go to that company’s website and file a fraud report. Ask the company to remove any fake reviews under your name. If the content inside an unsolicited package is suspicious, isolate the item if it can be done safely. Then, quickly document the visible surfaces of the item, including sender, recipient, postmark data, and physical description. Maintain a safe physical distance from the item, wash your hands with soap and warm water, and alert others nearby that a suspicious letter or package has been found. If medical attention is warranted, contact local authorities, including the Postal Inspectors at (877) 876-2455.

The USPS reminds consumers that it does not send unsolicited text messages. Any text message or email claiming an issue with your package delivery is likely a scam. USPS text messages never include links. Treat your personal information like cash. Don’t click on any links from unknown sources and forward USPS-related spam emails to spam@uspis. gov; forward smishing/text messages to 7726.

Perseverance in our Hope, Jesus Christ!

PASTOR

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7) Jesus gives us many final instructions through His last revelation which are recorded for us by the Apostle John. This verse is just one of several in

Jesus’ last messages to the churches of Asia Minor. In each of these messages to the Angels of those churches, Jesus uses the same wording consistently. Those are these important words for us, “To the one who conquers”. The original language uses the word ‘νικάω’ (nikao) which is where the popular sports shoe brand got their name ‘Nike’. The word has its original meaning, to conquer, to be victorious, to overcome. I prefer the wording many Bible translations use, ‘over-

comes’. I think it captures what we as Christians must always remember, we must ‘persevere’ in the faith (Gospel). The message from (Rev. 2:7) is that those who ‘persevere’ in faith will inherit eternal life. My Brothers and Sisters, no matter what trials you face, how difficult the circumstances may be, we have our hope in Jesus Christ. We must rely on the Holy Spirit to remain holy and refuse to be drawn away by the desires of this world that are temporal and never really provide true satisfaction.

The desires of this world, especially those of excessiveness and those that seek self-satisfaction will harm the soul and separate us from the things of God. Paul gives the church of Colossae (Colossians) these instructive scriptures, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no par-

tiality.” (Col. 3:23-25). My friends if you have once trusted Christ but have fallen away repent and turn to Christ. Believers can be deceived and fall away but we need to live a life of repentance. We all need forgiveness that comes through repentance. Jesus has called all sinners to repent and believe. Put your faith in Jesus the only one who can transform you into a new creation. Not a better version of you be a ‘new creation’. My Brothers and sisters, go to Jesus in those times of sorrow and

trials that will come upon all those who call on the name of the Lord. All true believers have eternal security and will persevere because Jesus’ declaration that “all that the Father gives me will come to me” and “I shall lose none of them that he has given me” (John 6:37, 39). Jesus desires a relationship with you. Let us go to Him in prayer. May the grace of Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Local monuments commemorate and honor Korean War veterans

Sunday, July 27 marked

72 years since the armistice ending the Korean War was signed.

The town of Dallas hosts a Korean War Veterans Memorial at 131 N Gaston Street, located 0.1 miles south of West Trade Street, on the right. The inscription reads “June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953. This monument is dedicated by the citizens of the Town of Dallas in memory of the brave men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Korean War Conflict. Dedicated November 11, 2016.”

Another North Carolina Korean War Memorial is located nearby, at 8850 Fairview Road, within Mint Hill Veterans Memorial Park in Mint Hill.

And across the street from Joy Theater, Kings Mountain has its memorial that honors several wars, including the Korean War. These memorials commemorate the service and sacrifices of our veterans during the conflict.

On June 25, 1950, in a sudden and unprovoked attack, North Korean troops stormed across the 38th parallel, plunging the Korean Peninsula into war. With backing from the Soviet

Union and China, communist forces sought to unify Korea under their regime. The United States, under the banner of the United Nations, quickly rallied to defend the South, marking the start of a bloody and grueling conflict. For three years, soldiers endured intense combat in rugged terrain, from the icy hills near the Yalu River to the scorched fields surrounding Pusan. The war saw dramatic swings. MacArthur’s daring Inchon landing turned the tide, but Chinese intervention pushed Allied forces back.

In July 1953, an armistice was signed, halting the fighting but never officially ending the war. Over 36,000 American lives were lost, and countless Korean civilians suffered. Despite its magnitude, the Korean War earned the nickname “The Forgotten War,” overshadowed by World War II and the Vietnam War.

Today, the Korean War’s legacy endures in the tense relations between North and South Korea and in the hearts of veterans whose bravery shaped history. The battle lines may have quieted, but the echoes of their sacrifice remain.

Regional artist competition and exhibit All Aboard: 100 years of trains and travel

Southern Arts Society (SASi) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the historic Southern Railway Depot that is our home. They ask artists to help us celebrate by creating art that speaks to the history and power of moving by rail.

From 1925 to the present day, what visions reflect the people who built, worked, or traveled on the railway? The railway moved people, packages, mail, livestock, cars, coal and more around the country, opening up the vast regions of the US in a way never seen before.

One hundred years later, we still rely on the rails to move and connect our country. SASi is seeking artwork and images in all media that capture travel and movement by rail spanning the past 100 years.

Artwork should reflect the theme – All Aboard! 100 years of trains and travel

Caroline Eason running for NC House District 110

25, of Lawndale, has thrown her hat into the ring for the NC House of Representatives, District 110, which includes Cleveland and Gaston counties. Eason grew up in Lawndale and is a graduate of Burns High School and UNC Chapel Hill with a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.

She has worked in her family’s pharmacy since the age of 12, and has three pharmacies in Cherryville, Maiden, and West Lincoln, NC.

“My involvement in state and federal policy began a few years ago when my family’s independent pharmacy faced an uncertain future. Due to growing consolidation in the healthcare industry, it came to the point where legislation was the only remedy,” she

said. “Through this, I realized so many other industries face similar challenges, including community banks, local farmers, and countless other small businesses. I dove into the realm of legislation and became a stronger advocate for small businesses and a free market. Strengthening and growing our state and local economies is one of my top priorities.”

“I stood up for this legislation before our state’s House Health Committee. I am an advocate for lowering prescription drug costs, reducing insurance premiums, and expanding access to healthcare, including in rural communities. I want to continue fighting for legislation that improves health and reduces costs for North Carolinians.”

Her work in her family’s pharmacies provided her with firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing the industry and how it impacts everyday citizens.

“During my final year of pharmacy school, I was chosen as my college’s health policy intern. I currently serve as an appointed member of a federal legislative steering committee that focuses on solving healthcare and pharmacy-related policy issues. During my appointments, I have visited DC many times, raising awareness and suggesting solutions to the health issues that plague our nation, state, and district. I have also been fighting alongside Representative Rhyne in Raleigh to pass pharmacy-related legislation.”

Caroline describes herself as a common-sense conservative who puts people over politics. “Our district needs a representative who values tradition, and at the same time brings new, youthful energy to tackle today’s challenges. I will work tirelessly to be your advocate in Raleigh.”

She concludes, “I am a woman of faith. I have a strong sense of right and wrong. I will not compromise my values to gain favor or avoid conflict. When I asked my family and friends to describe me in one word, the most common word I found was “advocate.”

After 16 years in public office, Kelly Hastings announced he would not seek re-election last May, opening the door for another Republican to step forward.

John Michael Montgomery headlines ALWS “Concert on the Corner” Aug. 9

The American Legion World Series (ALWS) will present “Concert on the Corner, on Saturday, August 9, at the intersection of Warren and Lafayette Streets in Uptown Shelby.

John Michael Montgomery will headline the concert as part of his “Farewell Tour Performance.” Montgomery takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. Best known for his uncanny ability to relate to fans and his rich baritone, John Michael’s songs are part of the most memorable moments in people’s lives.

His love songs, such as “I Swear,” “I Love the Way You Love Me,” and “I Can Love You Like That,” still resonate across the landscape in wedding ceremonies, as well as being covered by pop artists alike. John Michael not only sings love songs, but also hits like “Be My Baby Tonight” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” which highlight his whimsical side, allowing the audience to try to follow along with the upbeat and fast lyrics.

John Michael has a long history of music in his family. In his early years, he performed in a band called Early Tymz with his brother Eddie Montgomery and their friend Troy Gentry. After branching out solo in the 1990s, his hits earned him the CMA Horizon award as well as the ACM’s Top New Vocalist award. This set off a long series of awards that included the CMA’s Single and Song of the Year, Billboard’s Top Country Artist, and a Grammy nomination. When asked what he thinks gave him the edge in a career that calls millions but gives stardom to just a few, he thinks back to the legacy of his parents. “I reckon it was good

the guitar in 2020, Hasting has toured across the country opening for artists including Lee Brice, Dave Grohl, Kris Janson, Craigh Morgan, Jelly Roll, Tanya Tucker, Parmalee, and more.

Hasting narrowly escaped death after being shot ten times in Afghanistan. He is very vocal about his battle with PTSD and how songwriting and playing music bring him peace. Now on a mission to help anyone struggling with loss or their mental health find solace through music, Hasting strives to connect with his audience by producing music that does not need an explanation.

The event is free and open

to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy an evening of great family-friendly entertainment under the open sky in the heart of the city. Food vendors will also be on hand for the celebration preceding the anticipated baseball competition the following week.

According to its website, the American Legion World Series is a six-day youth baseball tournament held every August in Shelby. Cleveland County ALWS Baseball Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded specifically to plan and implement the annual baseball tournament. This year’s competition runs from

August 14 to 19. It is one of four national world series in the country. Teams representing legion posts from across the United States meet on Veterans Field and compete in a pool play tournament to crown a champion. This national event is more than just a baseball tournament, with

specialty days dedicated to supporting military appreciation, youth athletics, and other causes. Last year, approximately 123,000 tickets were sold for the baseball series, including military personnel, veterans, and fans alike.

GW Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, receive national academic honors

The Gardner-Webb University volleyball program has been named a 2025 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award winner and Team Honor Roll recipient for the first time ever.

In addition, both the men’s and women’s swimming teams received academic honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSAA).

After a stellar year in the classroom, the volleyball team placed within the top 20% nationally for Grade Point Average (GPA) by division. Joining Gardner-Webb nationwide, a record-breaking 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams maintained a year-long grade-point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale to earn the 2025 AVCA Team Academic Award.

Gardner-Webb Volleyball returns to the court for the 2025 season in late August, beginning its next campaign at UNC-Greensboro the weekend of Aug. 29-30. The Gardner-Webb swim program is among 763 teams from 432 institutions to be named a

CSAA Scholar All-America Team for the Spring 2025 semester. These teams, comprising 18,459 student-athletes, were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements.

To earn this presti-

gious honor, teams were required to achieve a GPA of 3.00 or higher during the Spring 2025 semester. Gardner-Webb’s 23 women earned a GPA of 3.67, and the 20 men on the swim team earned a 3.68.

The swim teams were also recognized with the award for the 2024 Fall Semester, and Gardner-Webb’s swim program has been consistently recognized for its academic achievements over the past 15 years.

Minecraft Light-Up Slap Ruler Bracelets recalled

The Minecraft Light-Up Slap Ruler Bracelets recall is a critical safety alert for parents nationwide. The battery compartment of the recalled light-up ruler bracelets can be easily opened by children, allowing access to the button cell batteries and violating the battery-operated toys requirements under the mandatory standard for toys. If a child swallows a button cell or coin battery, it can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns, or death.

This recall affects the Minecraft Light-Up Slap Ruler Bracelets, specifically Models 718508MCR and 718075MCR. The bracelets are available in pink and green colors. The “MINECRAFT” logo is printed on the front of the packaging, while the model number can be found on the back.

These bracelets were sold at Walmart stores nationwide from March 2025 to May 2025 for approx-imately $2. They contain three pre-installed button cell batteries. GPD commends Officer Doug Hord as he retires

The Gaston County Police Department congratulates Officer Doug Hord on his retirement from the force, posting on its Meta (Facebook) page on July 25, "After 27 years of exceptional service, we are honored (and selfishly saddened) to recognize and celebrate the retirement of Officer Doug Hord. Doug's career is defined by integrity, selflessness, and an unwavering dedication to both his department and the community he served."

Officer Hord began his law enforcement career in 1997 as a patrol officer, quickly earning the respect of his peers and supervisors through his strong work ethic and calm leadership. Over the years, he assumed numerous critical roles, leaving a lasting, positive impact. As an Emergency Response Team Marksman (sniper), he brought precision and discipline to high-risk situations. As a School Resource Officer, he became a trusted mentor and protector to both students and staff. As a founding member of the Marine Unit, Doug helped develop vital strategies for water patrol and safety operations. Hord was also a dedicated educator and innovator. He presented at the International Boater and Water Safety Summit and created the "Flotation Citation" program, a fun and impactful way to encourage kids to wear life vests and stay safe on the water. His ability to combine safety with creativity has saved lives and educated fami-

lies across our community.

Since 2020, Officer Hord has helped shape the next generation of officers as a Field Training Officer, offering guidance, wisdom, and steady support to new recruits. In 2023, he stepped into the role of Community Officer, where he improved outreach by building trust and furthering connections with those we serve.

Behind the scenes, Hord was just as influential. From organizing department traditions like the Pendleton Breakfast to supporting recruitment efforts and office renovations, he would always step in wherever help was needed. Doug created the "Phase

0" program to ease recruits into their roles before Field Training, demonstrating his commitment to helping prepare new officers for the job ahead and overall improvement of the department.

The department posted, "Perhaps just as memorable as his contributions are the qualities he brought to the job every single day. Doug's willingness to lend a hand, his quiet dependability, and his sharp sense of humor made him not just a great officer but a great friend and teammate. Doug never worries about rank or whose responsibility a project may fall under; if the department or community needs something, that is all that matters to him. His loyalty and passion to the department and the community we serve are unmatched. Doug, your legacy of leadership, compassion, and dedication has helped shape this department and the community for the better. You will be deeply missed, but your impact will continue for years to come. At this year's Award Banquet, the department was honored to present Doug with the 2025 Randy Pendleton Award as a result of his continued high level of commitment and hard work."

The department wishes Doug Hord the very best in retirement, saying, "Thank you for everything you have contributed throughout the years and know you truly have made a difference both in the department and throughout the community.

GARY MILLER

Ever since I can remember hunting deer, I have dreaded July and August. Not because the deer season is not here yet, but because it soon will be. And if I am going to be ready for the cooler mornings of September and the colder days of October and November, I have to force myself into the heat of summer to shoot my bow, put out my cameras, and hang tree stands. For the past several weeks the temperatures around here have been in the 90’s with humidity hovering around insanity. I mow my grass 30 minutes before dark and weed eat the next morning at daylight. Every other hour is sweltering. If I do have to work outside during the day, I usually do so in short increments to keep me from dying of heat stroke! Have I made my point? Yet, I know if I am going to be able to make an accurate shot, I need to be shooting my bow every day no matter what weather I’m faced with. I’ll do it but I don’t have to like it. It really is amazing to me that just about everything in life points to one unchangeable principle – you hardly ever reap in the same season as you sow. In fact, the term itself has been hijacked from the farmer. He knows, like none other, that truth. I imagine it has given him not only wisdom in other areas but patience in them as well. It also has given him a deep awareness of the uncontrollable period between those two seasons where he neither reaps nor sows but simply trusts. This is the longest season. It is the one that seems to have the most inactivity. It is the one that moves the work of reaping from the hand to the heart and from an aching back to a bended knee. The lesson to be learned in the principle of reaping and sowing is not only that we need to be careful as to what we sow but it is to remember that none of our work or our harvest, or our successes, can come without a season where God waters the seeds we have planted. It is and always has been His way of saying that our life’s work is a partnership with Him and that sometimes our job is to put our hand on the plow of trust and let God do the work that only He can do. • Take advantage of a 529 plan. A 529 education savings

plan is an increasingly popular way to save for college. The Education Savings Programs at Bank of America reports that 529 plan assets increased from $88.5 billion in 2008 to more than $446 billion in 2023. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged investment program administered by a state. When funds withdrawn from the plan are used for qualified expenses, such as tuition costs, then the earnings are free from federal income tax obligations. There

are distinctions between 529 prepaid tuition programs and 529 savings programs, so parents are urged to discuss those differences with a financial advisor so they can choose the best plan for their situation.

• Redirect extra income to a college savings plan. Parents may have “extra” sources of income that can be used to fund college savings. Annual bonuses, money distributed through state-sponsored property tax relief programs and even money freed up when kids graduate from daycare and into elementary school can be redirected into college savings plans. Redirected daycare expenses may be particularly savvy, as parents know the cost of daycare is considerable. In fact, a recent report from Child Care Aware of America indicated the cost to place two children in child care exceeded annual typical mortgage payments in 45 states. Once kids

are out of daycare, parents can redirect some or all the money they had been spending on child care into college savings plans.

• Don’t go it alone. A 2023 survey from the College Savings Foundation found that 45 percent of parents would request that family and friends contribute to a child’s 529 plan in lieu of the standard gifts given to children for their birthday, special events like graduation or during the holiday season. This practical yet less traditional approach can pad college savings plans by a considerable amount over the years, and close relatives might be more than happy to help parents fund a better education for their youngsters. College is a costly investment, but parents can look to a handful of strategies to help defray tuition costs.

Budget-friendly ways to freshen up your home’s exterior

As any homeowner knows, renovation projects tend to cost a lot of money. The average cost of a home renovation is difficult to gauge, as such endeavors run the gamut from complex projects like a kitchen overhaul to simpler ones like painting a room inside a home. Indeed, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry notes that scope is what drives the cost of a renovation project.

Though there might not be an “average cost” of a renovation project, homeowners can expect to spend

thousands of dollars on projects that are not very small in scale. Navigating such an expense at a time when inflation remains high might be difficult for some homeowners looking to maintain the appearance of their home exteriors. However, there are many budget-friendly ways homeowners can tend to the exterior of their properties.

• Power washing: Power washing won’t break the bank but it can revive the look of a home. Power washing removes dirt and grime from the siding of a

Hardware chains like Home Depot and Lowes typically rent power washers, but homeowners who don’t want to do it themselves can hire a professional for a few hundred dollars, if not less. Power washing after winter can be a good idea, as the elements can take a toll on a home’s exterior. A good power washing before spring and summer entertaining season can thus give a home a fresh, clean look without breaking the bank.

Do It While You Can

Do it while you can, Do it while you feel like it. The chances of you doing something now are greater than ten years from now. First, you may not be here ten years from now. If there is a career change you want to make then make it as soon as possible. The sooner the better. If there is education or training you are thinking about pursuing then begin now. The longer you wait to start the longer it will take to finish.

However, not everyone has the opportunity to start early. This is why you start when you can. Life is different for all of us. We all were raised in different environments. Often, information, mentoring and life coaching were not available. Some had to figure it out on their own.

That’s not easy, but we do the best that we can.

The younger you begin a career the better the chance you have of it being better, bigger and greater. The young people who take off to New York City, Hollywood or Nashville to pursue musical or acting, typically have a better chance of success. It’s easier to catch fish, where there are fish to catch.

People who enter the military in their early twenties can have a retirement in their forties or they can stay in service even longer if they wish.

The Bible reminds us to “Remember your creator in the days of your youth before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ’I find no pleasure in them’” Ecclesias-tes 12:1.

On the heels of this verse is one to keep in mind as well, “Youth and the prime of life are fleeting, but a life lived for God is forever.” 2 Samuel 22:4

One section of scripture that should be a waving flag to us is Luke 12. A man reaches a state in life

But God called him a fool and he died that very day and went out into eternity. Thus, we never know when our time will end. Therefore, take your vacation sooner rather than later. Enjoy what you can see, hear and do today. Love on the significant people in your life to-day. Do the good deed today. Do what you want to do. Do what you can do and do good things, whatever that may mean or look like to you.

Help those you can, but there is only so much you can do. You are one person and you can’t save the world. Don’t live your life in such a way that you end up saying, “I wish I had done this. I wish I had done that.”

We all deal with being good stewards of our time and minds. It’s not easy but why not start today?

Pool safety strategies to keep in mind this summer

Pools are great spots to beat the heat and enjoy some exercise. They’re also ideal spots for children to socialize with their friends away from screens. As inviting as pools can be, it is important that swimmers recognize that safety is paramount, particularly for those who have the benefit of backyard pools. The organization Stop Drowning Now indicates that an average of 3,500 to

4,000 people drown each year in the United States, with 10 drownings occurring each day. In addition, 6,500 non-fatal injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments each year, with a significant percentage of these incidents involving children under the age of 15 injured in residential pools. Pools are fun spaces that should not elicit fear. These swimming pool safety tips can help safeguard swimmers of all ages. Install barriers: Barriers like tall, self-latching fences and gates (with vertical panels not easily scaled) can deter unmonitored entry into a pool area. Such safety precautions are mandatory in many towns and cities, even if there is a separate fence around the perimeter of the yard. Additional safety precautions can include special ladders that roll down or lock for above-ground pools, and alarms that sound if someone opens a pool gate without homeowners’ knowledge. Close supervision: Lifeguards are stationed at public pools to keep careful watch of swimmers. The role of lifeguard at pools on private properties must be filled by responsible adults. Children should never be allowed to swim without someone monitoring the water at all times. Swimmers should be asked to exit the pool in the event the adult monitoring the pool needs to head indoors for a minute or if the adult’s attention is pulled elsewhere while outside. When hosting a pool party, hosts can consider hiring a lifeguard to watch the pool so they can handle hosting duties elsewhere. Learn to swim: Although

it’s possible to drown in mere inches of water, the likelihood of drowning is lower for experienced and skilled swimmers. Enroll children in swim lessons so they can learn the proper techniques. Until kids’ swimming skills are strong, it may be advisable for them to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in the water. Inflatable water wings and other devices are not guaranteed lifesaving devices. Keep the pool clean: A pool should be properly maintained and sanitized to remain a safe space. The primary pool sanitizers include chlorine and bromine, which help prevent algae and bacterial growth. Maintaining a proper pH in the water increases swimmer comfort and helps the sanitizer work optimally.

Dive carefully: Swimmers should always enter the pool feet-first, unless there is a diving board and a safe diving depth. The American National Standards Institute says the minimum depth of a diving board in a swimming pool is 7.5 feet, but some municipalities have their own recommendations. A depth of nine feet often is recommended for safer diving.

Walk, don’t run: It’s tempting to run around the perimeter of an inground pool, especially when kids are having fun. But wet surfaces become slippery, and it’s easy to slip and fall, risking injury or falling into the pool water.

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about spousal IRAs? My spouse and I are in our 50s and are looking for ways to boost our retirement savings. My wife is a homemaker and caregiver, and works parttime too, but her income is very small. Need a Boost

Dear Need, Saving for retirement can be very difficult for married spouses who stay home to care for family or otherwise have scant income. But there is a little-known tax break offered by the Internal Revenue Service –known as a spousal IRA – that can help them, and their partner save for retirement.

Spousal individual retirement accounts allow a working spouse to contribute to a nonworking or low-earning spouse’s retirement savings. They can be set up as a traditional IRA or Roth IRA, which allow couples to save for retirement on a tax-deferred or tax-free basis.

How They Work

A spousal IRA isn’t a unique type of IRA or a joint account, but instead it is a separate IRA opened and owned in the name of the nonworking or low-income earning spouse. This will not only help boost your family’s overall retirement savings, but it provides non-working/low-earning spouses access to their own funds in an unforeseen event like the death of their spouse, divorce, or illness.

To qualify for a spousal IRA, spouses must file taxes jointly as a married couple, and the working spouse must have enough earned income (taxable income such as wages, salary, bonuses, commissions, and self-employment income) to cover contributions for both parties.

The process of opening a spousal IRA is also no different from opening a regular IRA. Brokerage firms and many banks and other financial institutions offer IRAs.

In 2025, each spouse under age 50 can contribute up to $7,000 annu-

ally to an IRA, or $8,000 annually for those over age 50, but the total contribution can’t exceed the taxable earned income reported on the couple’s tax return. Otherwise, the IRS limits contributions based on their earned income.

Roth or Traditional?

Deciding whether to open a Roth or traditional IRA depends on your tax situation and financial goals.

Traditional IRA contributions typically are tax deductible the year in which they are made and are beneficial during high-income earning years. Contributions grow tax-free until they are withdrawn during retirement.

Roth IRA contributions aren’t tax deductible the year in which they are made, but qualified contributions plus any earnings grow taxfree and are withdrawn tax-free in retirement as long as the couple follows IRS rules. Among them: you must be 59½ and have held your Roth IRA for at least five years be-

fore you withdraw investment earnings tax-free and penalty-free.

There are also penalties for withdrawals on traditional IRAs before age 59½ unless the owner qualifies for an exception, and he or she must begin taking the annual withdrawals known as required minimum distributions (RMDs) from these plans the year he or she turns 73 (or 75 beginning in 2033). Roth IRAs don’t require RMDs until after the death of the owner. However, beneficiaries of a Roth IRA generally will need to take RMDs to avoid penalties, although there is an exception for spouses.

For more information on the IRS rules of both traditional and Roth IRAs see IRS.gov/retirement-plans/ traditional-and-roth-iras.
