Finding Hope in Despair

(Part 4 of “Mental Health”Series)

Life can be full of beautiful moments, but sometimes it throws us into dark, difficult places where hope feels just out of reach. Maybe you’re facing a loss, a disappointment, or a season of uncertainty that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and weary. If that’s where you’re at today, know this: you’re not alone, and there is hope—even in the darkest of times. One verse that has brought comfort to many believers, including myself, is Psalm 42:11 (NLT) It says, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!” These words are powerful because they acknowledge the reality of our struggles while also pointing us toward hope—hope that is rooted in trusting God’s promises.

Hold the Lifeline

When we’re in the midst of despair, it’s easy to feel like hope is slipping away, like the darkness might never lift. But here’s the truth: God’s prom-

ises are unchanging, and His love for us is steadfast. Clinging to His Word during those dark moments is like holding onto a lifeline. It reminds us that our feelings aren’t the final word—God’s promises are. In those times of despair, I encourage you to speak Scripture over your life. Remind yourself of God’s promises of peace, comfort, and hope. Hebrews 10:23 (NLT) says, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.” God is the source of hope, and He wants to fill us with His joy and peace, even when circumstances tell us otherwise.

Never Alone

Another beautiful promise is found in Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” When feelings of fear and despair threaten to overwhelm us, God’s presence is a reminder that we’re never truly alone. We can lean into His promises and trust that He is working all things together for good. Remember, hope isn’t always about having everything perfectly figured out. It’s about trusting God’s character, His faithfulness, and

His love. It’s about believing that even in the darkness, His light is shining—sometimes just behind the clouds, waiting to break through. Even in the darkest times, hope in God is never lost. Keep holding on— you’re closer to breakthrough than you think.

Let’s Pray:

“Lord, I come to You feeling overwhelmed and weary. Thank You for Your unchanging promises and Your steadfast love. Help me to cling to You in these dark moments, trusting that You are working all things for my good. Fill me with Your hope, peace, and strength. Please remind me that I am never alone because You are with me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO

GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying. “In Jesus’ name - Amen.

On May 8, over 650 students and faculty of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy enjoyed a “Day of Play” with representatives from the American Heart Association and the Carolina Panthers. After a video from Coach Dave Canales, the students were divided into 10 stations for fun football drills. Each station was led by members of the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy high school football team. The students and staff dressed in their Panthers gear, and everyone got an NFL Play 60 t-shirt at the end of the event.

Wildlife Commission Seeks Public Comment for Draft 2025 Wildlife Action Plan

SUN Meals To Go for NC students 18 and under

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) invites the public to review and comment on its 2025 draft of the North Carolina State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP). The Plan identifies fish, wildlife and plant species of greatest conservation need (SGCN), as well as research and management priorities for other species. It describes 40 types of aquatic, wetland and terrestrial natural communities that provide habitats important to SGCN and other priority species.

“This comprehensive Plan is meant to chart a course for conservation actions with detailed priorities to protect and conserve species and habitats,” said Habitat Conservation Director Shannon Deaton. “It captures the threats and impacts being faced today and for the next 10 years. We have benefitted tremendously from our partners, and we want to hear perspectives from residents and academia too. What are their concerns, suggestions and desires for wildlife and habitats, whether related to development, protected areas, research interests and needs and how they can participate, from a broad or localized level. People can pick and choose chapters they wish to provide feedback on, or they can provide input to all of it. This draft provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute to this important conservation blueprint. N.C. citizens should be able to visualize themselves participating in the implementation of the plan.”

The plan provides a roadmap to keep common species common and prevent the need to list a species for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. Spotlights on species and habitats are captured in Chapter 3-Species and Chapter 4-Habitats.

“We have several successful projects that came directly from implementing priorities identified in SWAP, such as the downlisting by USFWS of wood stork (Mycteria americana) from endangered to threatened and the subsequent 2023 proposal by USFWS to remove the wood stork from federal protection due to recovery of the species,” said Wildlife Action Plan Coordinator Cindy Simpson.

The draft plan includes updates from the 2015 plan with new research, biological knowledge and survey findings, plus improved conservation actions targeted at resiliency and a stronger understanding of impacts from changing weather patterns. The combination of more historical weather events (such as Hurricane Helene) and the increase of the human population along with continued growth patterns has a compounding impact on wildlife resources, which are captured in Chapter 5-Threats as well as other chapters. Information from a regional climate assessment for North Carolina included in the draft 2025 Plan was developed by the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) and notes that changing climate patterns in the state will include continued increases in extreme

heat and number of hot days, extreme weather and precipitation events that result in more frequent flooding, further sea level rise and associated saltwater intrusion into freshwater and inland habitats.

“We are seeing an increase in climate-related impacts to aquatic species that require cold-water habitats,” said Simpson. “Helene devastated extensive acres of forested habitats, including riparian areas that provide shade for cold-water streams. Storm debris added additional barriers for aquatic species to be able to move upstream as previously cold waters are now warming. Our coastal regions are also at a high risk of habitat loss due to climate change, characterized by intensified storms that lead to increased saltwater intrusion, resulting in the emergence of ghost forests.”

The NCWRC is responsible for managing and coordinating the SWAP in accordance with the federal State and Tribal Wildlife Grant Program, managed through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). To be eligible for federal matching grants, states are required to create a SWAP and to conduct a 10-year mandatory comprehensive review and update to their Plan. NCWRC published North Carolina’s first SWAP in 2005.

North Carolina’s SWAP also includes updates and information about the numerous programs and efforts by partners and collaborators who support North Carolina’s conservation priorities. The NCWRC is working collaboratively with various partners, organizations, stakeholders and interested citizens who are providing input during the revision process.

“I cannot say enough about the amount of work our partners, especially USFWS and SECAS, have done to help us develop this revision of our Wildlife Action Plan,” said Executive Director Kyle Briggs. “Now we need your assistance to make sure we have comprehensively addressed the conservation priorities for species of greatest conservation need and at-risk habitats. We look forward to your comments to finalize this document so that it can be used as a guide for conservation actions.”

Comments to the draft version may be submitted online through the survey link located on the SWAP webpage and they will be reviewed for inclusion into the final version and sent to USFWS for approval. Anyone wishing to submit additional written comments, should first complete the online survey and then may submit written letters by email to cindy.simpson@ncwildlife.gov with 2025 Draft SWAP comments in the subject line; or if sending through USPS address it to:

North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission

Attn: 2025 Draft State Wildlife Action Plan 1721 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1700

NCWRC is accepting comments through July 5, 2025.

Shope, Brooks promoted at Pinnacle Classical Academy

The board of directors of Pinnacle Classical Academy has announced the promotion of Dr. Shelly Shope, the school's headmaster, to chief education officer, and the promotion of Angela Brooks, the school's dean of secondary education, to headmaster.

In addition, the board has announced that Wendy Clary, dean of elementary education, is retiring after a 33-year career in education. The school's new dean of elementary education is Kendra McGinnis, until now associate dean of el-

ementary education.

Monica Dellinger, a former Pinnacle Classical Academy teacher who became executive director of Community Charter School in Stanley, is returning to Pinnacle as dean of secondary education. Laura Beth Richardson is continuing as dean of intermediate education.

"With the steady

growth of Pinnacle Classical Academy, and the completion of the second phase of classrooms, it was time to make changes and additions to our leadership team," said Sen. Debbie Clary, the chair of the school's board of directors.

"When a dedicated group of parents and community leaders founded Pinnacle Classical Academy in 2013, we were so fortunate that Wendy Clary and Angela Brooks were among our founding faculty and staff members," Sen. Clary added. "We were

so fortunate, too, when Dr. Shelly Shope joined our administrative team in 2016. Their hard work, integrity, and commitment to the good of our students have helped Pinnacle Classical Academy gain state and national recognition."

Founded in 2013, Pinnacle Classical Academy is a tuition-free K-12 public charter school in Shelby with 1,174 students. U.S. News & World Report recognizes the school as one of the best elementary schools, best middle schools, and best high schools in America.

I’ve been hanging out with my grandson. He’s only 6. He loves a diversity of things from mowing to basketball. A few weeks ago, I took him on his first fishing trip. We went to a friend’s pond. I knew I could teach Juda some of the nuances of fishing while ensuring his success in catching fish. I was right. We caught one small brim after another. Every now and then, we would catch sight of a large fish. And of course, Juda wanted to catch it. And of course, we never did. The smallest ones were always the first to our bait so much so, they became a nuisance. So, I had a plan for our next fishing trip. I would take him to the riverbank and let him try his newfound love in more difficult waters. I thought (which was my first mistake) that we might have more of an opportunity to catch a larger fish. I was right when it came to the opportunity. I was wrong in thinking he was ready for the move. He lasted about 20 minutes. I lasted about 18. We packed up our stuff and headed home. Our next trip will be back at the pond. He failed the test. But that’s not a bad thing.

I can imagine what some of you are thinking when you read that he “failed the test.” You may have thought about how the word failure seems too serious for a simple fishing trip. Juda was not a failure, however. He just failed the test of seeing if he was ready for bigger fishing trips. He has passed plenty of other tests. That’s why he’s push-mowing my back yard. But he was not ready for the river. And if I were to ask him where he wants to go on our next fishing trip, he would say to the pond. He knows he’s not ready as well. That’s what tests do. They put us in situations where we can take what we’ve been learning and see if we are ready for the actual event. That’s why teachers give tests. It’s for them and the person taking the test, to see if they are ready for the profession they are pursuing. Just the other day, I was watching a local television station, and the emergency broadcast system test came on. I hadn’t heard it in a long time. The announcer said, “This is a test of the Emergency Alert System. This is only a test. If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information. This is only a test.”

Let me cut to the chase. Some of you have been really growing in your faith, and all of a sudden, something bad, difficult, confusing, unexpected, or painful has happened. And you are questioning why. Let me tell you why. God is testing what you’ve learned to see how you’ll apply it when it becomes an actual emergency. Scratch that. God knows how you’ll react. But the test reveals to you whether you’re ready to move from the pond to the river. So, recognize tests for what they are. And recognize that failed tests are better than failing an actual emergency. While Juda may have failed this first test, one day he will be ready for the river.
