Although March, which is normally recognized as Women’s History Month, has come and gone, the many, many deeds of women in and throughout history cannot, and must not, be overlooked or trivialized.
For those reasons, the Cleveland County Commission For Women (CCCFW) recently celebrated to remember the month, and to let all know they have been in existence since the ‘70s.
every county in the Tarheel State has a Women’s Commission. She also noted Cleveland County’s branch
is the second oldest branch in the state.
Wells continued...the Cleveland County’s Women’s Commission was established originally “…to promote women who enhance the lives of all citizens of Cleveland County in one

Members of the CCCFW have taken part in sponsoring women’s legislative agendas, hosting workshops, and reaching out to and honoring women in the healthcare field and other pertinent occupations.

Ms. Wells also noted that beginning in 2025 their group began honoring Cleveland County women age 90 and over by having 12 volunteers giving out specially wrapped cookies to 18 nursing homes and assisted care facilities in the county.
Wells noted that Shirley Lail, a founding and original member, in 1978, asked the county commissioners to establish the council. The council had a name change in the ‘80s.
From those times until now, CCCFW members have worked tirelessly to establish abuse prevention for women who have been victims of domestic violence, opening a house for those victims (Daybreak House), founding a women’s resource center as a place providing information for women throughout Cleveland County; establishing a Distinguished Women’s Award, with 10 women being selected for that honor the first year of its creation; hosting a Distinguished Women’s Banquet, and adding a Facebook page, as well
women of Cleveland County. The group also sponsors the Miss Cleveland County Fair Pageant.
In 2022, Wells noted the county decided to help the Commission for Women become an independent county group with the county commissioners committing to continue financial support for the Distinguished Women’s Banquet. As a group, Wells said they are now independent, with their own 501c3 status, new bylaws, and they meet on the fourth Tuesday

Secretary of Health and Human Services
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged on April 10 to seek out experts globally to discover the reasons for the increasing rates of autism in the United States, according to reports from The New York Times, U.S. News and World Report, Fox News, The Washington Post, and The Seattle Times. He set a deadline for an answer that has eluded scientists for decades.
“We’ve launched a massive testing and research effort that’s going to involve hundreds of scientists from around the world,” Kennedy announced at a Cabinet meeting held by President Donald Trump. “By September, we will know what has caused the autism epidemic, and we’ll be able to eliminate those exposures.”
Autism diagnoses in the United States have increased significantly since 2000, intensifying public concern. By 2020, the U.S. autism rate in 8-year-olds was 1 in 36, or 2.77%, up from 2.27% in 2018 and 0.66% in 2000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
While the government has not released details of its plans, Kristyn Roth, chief marketing officer for advocacy group the Autism Society of America, questioned whether September would be an achievable target.
Calling rising rates of autism an epidemic is “incredibly irresponsible and deeply concerning,” Roth said, adding that it “encourages fear, paranoia” and stigmatizes the autism community.
“Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects people in many different ways,” Roth said.
Trump, in February, ordered the creation of a “Make America Healthy Again” Commission made up of Kennedy and other secretaries to look at everything from the rates of autism and asthma in children.
“There’s got to be something artificial out there that’s doing this,” Trump told Kennedy at the meeting. “There will be no bigger news conference than when you come up with that answer.”
Scientists have been researching for decades what genetic or environmental factors might contribute to autism, but the causes of most cases remain unclear. Scientists who have worked for decades to find a cause greeted Kennedy’s predicted timeline skeptically.
They said that a single answer would be difficult to identify in a field of possible contributors, including pesticides, air pollution, and ma-
ternal diabetes.
They say the major drivers of the increase in U.S. autism rates are an expanded definition that includes more types of behaviors as well as more widespread awareness and diagnosis.
An extensive new study this week added to evidence that diabetes during pregnancy is linked with an increased risk of brain and nervous system problems in children, including autism.
Kennedy has long promoted a debunked link between vaccines and autism despite scientific evidence to the contrary.
“We’re going to look at vaccines, but we’re going to look at everything. Everything is on the table: our food system, our water, our air, different ways of parenting, all the kind of changes that may have triggered this epidemic,” Kennedy later told Fox News.
There are multiple studies already underway on autism, a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person’s brain functions.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was planning a large study into potential connections between vaccines and autism, Reuters reported last month.
Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives sent Kennedy a letter last week criticizing the hiring of discredited vaccine skeptic David Geier to examine the links. Maryland fined Geier
for practicing medicine without a license and prescribing dangerous treatments to autistic children.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is preparing a multimillion-dollar research program examining the causes of autism that would also examine the link between autism and the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, The Washington Post reported last week.
The CDC and NIH are both overseen by Kennedy’s Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS). A department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Kennedy has a long history of promoting falsehoods on autism, especially concerning vaccines, said Colin Killick, executive director of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network.
“With this latest announcement, it seems that he is forging ahead with rushing out misinformation to the public about the supposed causes of autism that cannot possibly be backed by actual science,” said Killick.
Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician and expert on environmental toxins, pointed to the current mass layoffs and cutbacks for research at Kennedy’s Department of Health and Human Services as one other reason for doubting such quick progress.
In the early morning of November 2, 2024 volunteers set up, registered anglers, and successfully launched the Annual Eaton/ SONC annual Fishing Tournament for Cleveland County Special Olympics NC at Lake Norman. The event was made possible by a large group of volunteers and local area sponsors to make this event a success. With 151 boats in the water, and prizes for biggest catch and weigh-in awarded for the top 30 catches, the
event raised over $50,699.00 for Cleveland County SONC. This funding will support state competition travel costs, uniform updates and sporting equipment needs for our athletes. A special Thanks to Rick Peace and Eaton Corporation for planning and continuous work to make this fundraiser possible. Opening morning of turkey season did not disappoint. Even though I never took a shot, I had lots of action. And it’s always great when you can watch a tom strut for an extended period of time. If it were not for a late morning zoom that I had to attend, I would have stayed longer, just trying to get a gobbler a little closer. But I sure am glad my local season finally opened. It seemed like it would never get here. What made it worse was just driving around and seeing all the toms already in their mating strut, and knowing that in years past, the season would have already been opened. I just felt like I was missing out. It reminded me of a stock market acronym that is often used. FOMO. It is the Fear Of Missing Out.
The fear of missing out is a term used to describe those who jump in the market at an inopportune time because they get afraid if they don’t’ get in now, they will miss real future gains. The scenario goes something like this. The stock price begins rising and rising. The news concerning said stock is all good. The pundits say it’s the next big thing. So, you buy when the price is at its peak. And then the inevitable happens. The stock price drops and drops and drops, until your holdings are so far in the red, you wonder if you will ever recover, much less, make a profit. It’s a bad place to be in – that is unless you’re thinking about your spiritual relationship.
I really don’t like how we ask people to be in a relationship with God. Instead of the FOMO version, we use the FOM version. The FOM version says accept Christ so you can miss Hell. The FOMO version says, follow Christ so you can enjoy the benefits of those who follow Him. One says accept Jesus or He will send you to hell. (FOM) The other says, receive Jesus so he can save you from the condemnation that is on us all. (FOMO) One says, be afraid of what God might do to you. (FOM) The other says be excited for what God might do for you. Let’s face it, no healthy relationship is built on the threat from the abuse of the other. And neither is one’s relationship to God. He loves you. Period. He is for you. His desire is that you have a fulfilled life. And following Christ would still be the best decision anyone could ever make, even if hell did not exist. It’s not about missing. It’s about missing out. And now would be a good time to FOMO in.

Jesus Christ, 33, of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also know as Golgotha, the place of the skull. Betrayed by the apostle Judas, Jesus was crucified by the Romans, by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate. The causes of death were crucifixion, extreme exhaustion, severe torture and loss of blood.
Jesus Christ, a descendant of Abraham, was a member of the house of David. He was the Son of the late Joseph, a carpenter of Nazareth, and Mary, his devoted Mother. Jesus was born in a stable in the city of Bethlehem, Judea. He is survived by his mother Mary, his faithful Apostles, numerous disciples and many other followers.
Jesus was self-educated and spent most of his adult life working as a Teacher. Jesus also occasionally worked as a Medical Doctor and its reported that he healed many patients.
Up until the time of his death, Jesus was teaching and sharing the good news, healing the sick, touching the lonely, feeding the hungry and helping the poor. Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His Father’s Kingdom and performing miracles, such as feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and healing a man who was born blind. On the day before His death, He held a Last Supper, celebrating the Passover Feast, at which He foretold his death. The body was quickly buried in a stone grave, which was donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a loyal friend of the family. By order of Pontius Pilate, a boulder was rolled in front of the Tomb. Roman Soldiers were put on guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did and believe in Him. Donations may be send to anyone in need.

(Part 3 of “Grow” Series)
Good Friday confronts us with a paradox: life springs from death.
DANYALE PATTERSON
John 12:24 (NIV) captures this beautifully: “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” Jesus, the seed, chose the cross, giving His life to produce a harvest— us, His followers, growing into His likeness. This isn’t growth we muster on our own; it’s a gift born from His sacrifice. When we reflect on the nails, the thorns, the weight of our sin He carried, we’re reminded that our ability to grow spiritually begins with what He finished on the cross.
Freedom
But growth through the crucifixion means facing hard truths. On Good Friday, I sometimes feel the sting of my own shortcomings—moments I’ve chosen pride over humility or fear over trust.
Isaiah 53:5 offers perspective: “But he was pierced for
our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
Jesus took it all—every misstep, every doubt—so we could be free to grow. The cross doesn’t shame us; it liberates us, inviting us to shed what holds us back and stretch toward His grace. Have you felt that freedom? It’s like a plant breaking through heavy soil, reaching for light.
This growth isn’t solitary. Galatians 2:20 (NIV) says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
Through the cross, we die to our old selves, but we rise with Jesus living in us. It’s a daily choice to let Him shape us—through prayer, forgiveness, or serving others. Maybe you are struggling to forgive someone. Meditate on the cross, visualize Jesus forgiving even as He suffered. Allow that moment to nudge you to let go, and feel your heart grow a little bigger, a little more like His.
This Good Friday, let’s linger at the foot of the cross. Let’s thank Jesus for His sac-
rifice and ask Him to help us grow—through His wounds, His love, His victory.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Dear Lord, I can never repay you for what you have done for me, but I offer you my life to be a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to you which is the least that I can do. Forgive me when I placed my desires over your desires. I am grateful for your love and mercy. Help me to grow to be a strong disciple of Christ. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
