Locals participate in 42nd Annual VIP Fishing Tournament

Local visually impaired/blind anglers attend fishing tournament held at the NC Outer Banks

Submitted by Julie Weathers Shelby Lions Club

Cleveland County’s Social Worker for the Blind, Lucy Plyler, took three Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) to the North Carolina Outer Banks for the 42nd Annual VIP Fishing Tournament. The group from Cleveland County had a great day of fishing off Jennette’s Pier. One member of the group, Lizzie Hopper caught a 14-inch sea mullet. Delores Lattimore caught a nice size spot, but the fish just weren’t biting. Danny Marble chose to fish from the Miss Oregon Inlet head boat and caught a variety of eight fish.

The NC VIP Fishing Tournament opens up three piers and two head boats to about 350 visually impaired persons (VIPs) from across the state. Only fish caught on the participant’s line and reeled in by the participant during the established time limit can be counted toward participant’s total points in the tournament. Volunteers are only permitted to bait hooks and cast the line into the ocean. Points are given based on the type of fish caught.

The annual event is sponsored by the First Flight, Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Columbia, Currituck, Lower Currituck and Plymouth Lions Clubs and attracts over 350 blind and visually impaired individuals and over 300 volunteers from all over North Carolina to the Outer Banks each October.

The North Carolina Lions VIP Fishing Tournament is a nonprofit organization celebrating its 42nd Anniversary this year. The project brings in participants

for three days of recreation, fellowship, and independent living workshops designed to help visually impaired persons (VIPs). It is the largest gathering of visually impaired in North Carolina and is believed to be the largest event of its kind in the world. The VIP program touches the lives of a small percentage of those persons who are attempting to conform to a world of the sighted. Tournament officials recognize the need to build support and a financial base for the project. In-kind services secured locally and statewide help offset the annual costs.

Fundraisers, such as the adopt-a-fisherman program, contributions and smaller projects cover expenses of the annual event that can exceed $400,000. Participants arrive on the Outer Banks on a Monday, are housed in local hotels, have six meals, go fishing on two head boats and four ocean fishing piers for a day of recreation, participate in seminars and independent living training, and visit with vendors. The closing awards banquet on Wednesday offers motivation and awards. The project has grown from a local tournament serving 12 blind children in 1982 to the 350 participants in 2025.

While Cleveland County’s VIPs didn’t bring home a trophy for their efforts, they gained valuable experience and built lasting relationships.

Many thanks to the Shelby Lions Club who provided funding and to Beaver Dam Baptist Church’s own Pastor Tom Runyon and co-driver Doug Weathers, who helped make it possible for the group from Cleveland County to go on this trip. They drove many hours and miles, making it a fun trip for the group.

Gratitude Scavenger Hunt

Have you ever gone on a scavenger hunt? You get a list of clues, start searching, and suddenly you’re seeing things you would’ve completely missed before. That’s what gratitude does; it sends us on a daily hunt for God’s goodness. It trains our hearts to see blessings in places we’d normally overlook. Most of us don’t have trouble thanking God for the obvious things: answered prayers, promotions, healing, or protection. But the true adventure begins when we start looking for him in the ordinary, even the inconvenient. Gratitude isn’t about pretending life is perfect; it’s about recognizing that God is present in every detail. I Thessalonians 5:18 (AMP) says, “in every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”

THE HUNT BEGINS

The world will give you endless reasons to complain, but heaven gives you one simple invitation: Give thanks in all circumstances. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s miraculous. It reminds us that even in the

chaos, God’s fingerprints are everywhere. So today, let’s turn life into a “Gratitude Scavenger Hunt”. You don’t need a special list, just a willing heart. Start by asking, “God, show me where you’re working today.” Then keep your eyes open. Maybe you’ll find him in the way sunlight warms your face or in the strength you didn’t know you had to get through one more day. You might even find him in a disappointment that redirected you toward something better. The goal isn’t to find everything that’s good, it’s to become more aware of God no matter what the circumstance is.

Here’s a simple challenge:

Find one blessing in each of these four places today:

1. Something God madea sunset, a tree, or even your next breath.

2. Something you can’t buy - peace, forgiveness, or joy.

3. Something you prayed for - even if it looked different than expected.

4. Something that made you laugh - a reminder that God delights in your joy. When you start collecting moments like these, your heart begins to change. The things that used to frustrate you become opportunities to see grace. The burdens feel lighter. You begin to realize

that gratitude is less about having more and more about seeing more.

Let’s Pray:

“Father, you are so good to me. I have tasted and seen that you are good. Forgive me for complaining. When I write in my gratitude journal, I am blown away at how many ways you have been good to me. Your sweetness is my weakness. I long to love you, praise you, and reflect you each and every day in Jesus name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Cleveland County Makes $10,000 Donation to Everyone Eats Emergency Fund Drive

Cleveland County has made a donation of $10,000 to support the Everyone Eats Emergency Food Fund Drive, spearheaded by Healthy Together Cleveland (HTC) to combat food insecurity in the county. Donations to this effort will be used to support Washington Outreach Ministry (WOM), a local nonprofit organization which serves as the primary food hub for Cleveland County. To date, HTC has raised $80,110 toward its goal and all donations are tax deductible. More information can be found at https://bit.ly/ Every1Eats

“Food insecurity is a real and pressing issue in Cleveland County,” said Kevin Gordon, Chairman of the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners. “We want our residents to know that we stand behind the Everyone Eats initiative and support community-based programs that make a meaningful impact on access to healthy food.”

Washington Outreach Ministry (WOM) serves as the primary food hub for Cleveland County and is being impacted by recent funding cuts. WOM supports 17 food pantries in Cleveland County alone, serves over 15,000 people each month, and is facing a $375,000 shortfall this year.

“We are deeply thankful to Cleveland County for their generous support of the Everyone Eats initiative,” said Jordan Frye, Project & Program Coordinator for Healthy Together Cleveland. "Every contribution, big or small, makes a meaningful impact, especially now as food pantries face growing challenges in providing food to our neighbors. Every dollar helps us move closer to a community where everyone has access to nutritious food.”

Food insecurity continues to impact thousands of people across Cleveland County, and the need continues to grow. HTC cites an alarming data point that 1 in 6 people in the county are experiencing food insecurity. That means about 16,980 people do not have enough food. Due to recent funding cuts to The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), local food pantries are being impacted.

Percy’s story began in heartbreak: dumped on the side of the road in a laundry basket with his littermates, starving and infested with parasites. If not for a kind-hearted Samaritan, they wouldn’t have survived.

Now, Percy is approaching his second birthday on November 30th, and he’s still waiting patiently for his forever home — watching others get adopted while he’s overlooked.

But Percy is truly as close to perfect as you can get: Percy is:

• Great with dogs.

• Wonderful with cats.

• Loves every human he meets.

• Small to medium size (depending on your perspective!)

• Up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly preventives. He’s gentle, affectionate, and ready to be someone’s best friend.

Adoption Recommendations & Procedures: We evaluate each application individually to ensure the best match for every dog.

Recommendations: Puppies: Children should be at least 6 years old. Small breeds: Children should be at least 8. Herding/ working breeds: Children should be at least 12

Procedures: Must be 21+ to adopt. No adoptions to college students. Physical home visits only (within 2 hours of Cleveland County, NC). Fenced yards required for certain dogs. Apartment living approved on a case-by-case basis. All current pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vet care. Adoption contract required. If you can’t keep the dog, they must return to the rescue. Adoption Fee: $250, includes all vetting, vaccinations, microchip, and neuter.

Adoption Process:

Fill out our online application. Receive an automated confirmation email. Our adoption coordinator will contact you. If references check out, we’ll schedule a home visit. A meet and greet will be arranged with Percy (and any other available dogs). If it’s a match, the adoption contract will be signed and Percy can go home!

Adoption Fee: $250, includes all vetting, vaccinations, microchip, and neuter.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Titus 3:3-6

During the early archery season I arrowed a nice doe. I calculated that I was in my tree stand about seven minutes. Before I went to search for my deer, I gathered my equipment, loaded it on my four-wheeler, and took it to my truck. By the time I was back at my tree stand, about forty minutes had passed. I knew I had made a good clean shot and there shouldn’t be any trouble finding my deer. I had tried to mark where I took the shot, but by the time I was back on the trail I was confused. I looked for my arrow and any sign of blood but could not find either. I decided to climb back

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

up into the tree stand to look again at where the doe had stood. I recalculated and shortly thereafter found my arrow and a few minutes later, the deer. Later, I thought about how difficult I had made a simple procedure simply by forgetting where I had made my shot. I was reminded of a spiritual truth I had learned a few months earlier. All through the Old Testament, when man had an encounter with God, God commanded him to build an altar. Abraham was the first that is recorded. God had told him that he would have a son. This was a real stretch for Abraham to believe since he was about seventy-five years old at that time and his wife was barren. God told him to build an altar. Jacob was another. He physically wrestled with the angel of the Lord one day. Jacob was given a lasting limp, but his encounter was followed by him building an altar. We have the significance of this in another example. The Children of Israel were crossing through the river Jordan. They were now in the land that was promised to them. God told them to take twelve stones, one for every tribe, and stack them up, so that when their children pass by, they could tell them how God had delivered them. These stones would be a remembrance of their encounters with God.

Many times, God has encounters with us. There may have been a time that He called you into a certain ministry, or He may have spoken to your heart about a particular matter so clearly that it was undeniably Him. Since then, time has passed. You have not forgotten about that moment, but it seems distant and it has caused you to doubt. But what if you had built an altar at the time and place that God had spoken to you? You would be able to go back and remember exactly what transpired there. And your faith would be renewed. It’s not too late. Maybe you need to take a trip back in time, to that place where you had your encounter with God. While you’re there, build an altar. An altar is anything that will cause you to remember what happened. One time, I scratched an “A” in a tree, so that each time I passed by that tree I would be reminded of that moment with God. When I see that tree, doubt and discouragement leave and faith is restored. It’s just like getting back up in that tree stand and seeing it all over again. It will make the path clear, once again.
