The annual tradition of ringing the bell for the Red Kettle campaign provides hope across Cleveland County.
As the holiday season approaches, the familiar sound of bells ringing outside local stores signals more than the start of festive shopping—it marks the beginning of a season of giving and compassion.
For generations, The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign has been a symbol of hope, providing vital support to families and individuals in need throughout the community.
In Cleveland County, the Red Kettle Campaign does far more than collect spare change. Each donation placed into a kettle helps fund life-changing programs that offer food for the hungry and emergency assistance for those facing unexpected hardships. Every dollar raised stays in the community, making a direct impact on local lives.
Funds from the campaign sustain The Salvation Army’s
outreach throughout the year. Food pantry services ensure that no child or senior goes hungry. Emergency financial assistance helps families keep their lights on and avoid eviction. Beyond these basic needs. The Salvation Army was one of the first disaster relief organization on site after Hurricane Helene that hit western North Carolina.
During the holidays, Red Kettle donations also make it possible to provide Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree program, and other seasonal assistance for families who might otherwise go without. These efforts remind neighbors that they are seen, valued, and supported, especially during times of struggle.

The Red Kettle Campaign’s success lies in the people who make it possible: the volunteers and community partners who give their time to ring bells, organize groups to support the Red Kettle stations, and sponsor kettle locations. Every hour the bell rings for the fundraiser, it creates fellowship and awareness. Smiling faces and cheerful greetings outside stores serve as gentle reminders that generosity and kindness can brighten even the coldest winter day.

Local businesses, civic clubs, and churches play a vital role in the campaign’s success. By adopting a kettle location or volunteering as a team, they demonstrate leadership and compassion in action. Businesses and organizations may proudly

Cleveland Community College congratulates its long-standing partner, Greenheck Group, on receiving the Outstanding Employer Award from the North Carolina WorkBased Learning Association (NCWBLA).The award was presented during the Association’s annual conference held in Asheville on November 6.
The Outstanding Employer Award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment to workbased learning and make a lasting impact on students, communities, and the local economy. Since 2007, Greenheck Group has been a valued partner of CCC, creating meaningful educational and economic opportunities for students in Cleveland County. With five facilities located near the College, Greenheck has worked closely with faculty and staff to provide students with real-world learning experiences that bridge the gap between education and employment. Through programs such as Apprenticeship Cleveland, Greenheck offers students the opportunity to earn while they learn—gaining hands-on skills, industry knowledge, and pathways to rewarding careers close to home.
This collaboration benefits both students and local employers while strengthening the region’s economic foundation. The Outstanding Employer Award was presented to Greenheck Group by Jaime Henderson, director of College and Career Readiness at CCC. She nominated Greenheck for the award while she served as the Work-Based Learning coordinator. She was joined for the presentation by Sharon Nivens, director of Apprenticeships and Work-Based Learning, and Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of Academic Affairs. Accepting the award on behalf of Greenheck were Chuck Benton, Kamryn Spangler, and Alexander Self. “Greenheck doesn’t just invest in programs; they invest in people,” Henderson said. “They believe that when you invest in people, you strengthen both your workforce and your community. That belief shows in everything they do.”
Greenheck’s leadership team actively supports workforce development initiatives through advisory committee service, hosting interns, participating in customized training, and engaging directly with students through facility tours, classroom visits, and mentorship opportunities.
Greenheck’s partnership with CCC exemplifies how collaboration between industry and education can build a stronger community. Their investment in CCC’s students helps shape the workforce of tomorrow and fuels the growth of Cleveland County and beyond.

( 2nd Part of “Gratitude Scavenger Hunt” Series)
I t’s easy to celebrate God when the blessings are big: the healed sickness, the new job, the answered prayer that finally came through. Those moments make us shout with joy. But the truth is, most of life is made up of small, quiet moments that rarely make the news. The sunrise that greets you before work. The friend who checks in when you need encouragement. The breath you take without thinking. Ephesians 5:20 (NLT) says, “And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”. Everything includes the quiet Tuesdays, the small victories, and the unnoticed mercies that fill our days. James 1:17 (AMP) says, “
DANYALE PATTERSON

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].”
When we only thank God for the spectacular, we miss the steady stream of grace that sustains us. Gratitude grows when we notice the little things, because that’s where God hides his treasures. Think about it: the Savior of the world entered the story as a baby in a manger. The miracle of the five thousand began with a boy’s small lunch. The resurrection started with a single rolled-away stone. God’s greatness often hides in things that seem insignificant. So what does that look like for you? Maybe it’s thanking him for a warm meal after a

long day, for the car that still runs, or for the quiet peace that meets you when you turn off the noise. It might be thanking him for lessons learned in waiting, for growth you can’t yet see, or for the strength to simply keep going. When you pause long enough to see those tiny glimmers of grace, you realize that nothing is small in God’s hands. Every moment is sacred when it’s surrendered to him. And when you begin to thank him for the “little things,” you’ll find your joy expanding. The small things become stepping stones that lead you deeper into His presence. Let us remember what Psalm 136:1 (AMP) says, “Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness (graciousness, mercy, compassion) endures forever.”
Let’s Pray:
“Father, thank you for the small joys that fill my days. Forgive me for rushing past the simple blessings you place
before me. Teach me to slow down, to notice your hand in every detail, and to celebrate your blessings in everyday life. May my gratitude grow deeper with each ordinary moment that reveals you r extraordinary love in Jesus’ name. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”
1 Timothy 1:15-17

By Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen

It was a cold October day. The fog wouldn’t lift until late morning. It was the opening day of Kentucky’s muzzleloader season, and I was high atop a mountain looking for a buck making his way back to his bedding area. The day was perfect for deer movement, and it wasn’t long until the action began. As soon as daylight broke, I began to softly rattle, just enough to let the neighborhood deer know there were two bucks around. I especially wanted the boss buck to know he had two intruders. At 9:00 I spotted antlers about 45 yards away. The buck stood at that distance for a minute or two, long enough for me to get a decent glimpse of size of his head gear. I was in big buck territory, and I had my hopes set on a wall-hanger. This buck was close to being just that. As he looked up toward me, I quickly appraised the width of his rack. He was a good buck; not exactly what I was looking for, but nevertheless a good buck. That’s when the temptation began. For the next ten minutes I watched that buck through my scope. I counted eight points and no brow tines. He came as close as 25 yards. I wanted to shoot badly, but I also wanted to wait. I knew in Kentucky a hunter has only one buck tag. So, whatever I took, would end my season in that state. In a matter of a few short minutes I argued, debated, and weighed my options. I was torn in so many directions. I could settle for what was sure and safe or I could wait with no promise of ever seeing anything bigger the rest of the season. I passed, but I’m glad that deer didn’t stick around much longer. After he left, I thought about what had just transpired. I was reminded that my life and yours is made of the same choice I just made.

Autos/Misc

Most people go through life settling for what is safe and sure, while God has something so much better for them. This happens because the lure of the good that is in our sight is stronger than the lure of the best that is just out of our sight. While certainty can be good and somewhat safe, it can also hold you in a situation that keeps you from the place you are meant to be. The Bible calls all of Jesus’ followers to walk by faith. Sometimes that means forgoing what’s in front of you, for something better but not yet seen. Are you settling for what is good because you can see the outcome? It may look good, but it may be keeping you from something better that is just around the next hill.
