“Watching a community come together to make this years’ 4th Annual Juneteenth celebration in Kings Mountain a reality, may be one of the most humbling things I’ve ever witnessed,” said Janie McVay, who along with husband Leroy, have been the event planners for KM’s Juneteenth events since its inception in 2022.

The Juneteenth Celebration, Saturday, June 21, at Patriots Park in Kings Mountain, begins at 5 pm and has been enhanced to include a Kid’s Zone with rides, bouncy houses, and inflatables. There will be DJs on the main stage and a DJ at the gazebo for kids’ activities and the coloring contest, for children 10 and under.

This year’s Juneteenth event creates a synergy between two local organizations, the Davidson Association and Maurice and Brandy Tate’s KM Elite, ensuring that every angle from music, dancing, arts, crafts, and activities is covered to maximize the experience.

"There are people who just stepped up this year,” said Janie McVay, “an answer to prayer for help and for unity in our city, because events of this nature have too many moving parts to handle it all by yourself. Without help from the mayor, the City of Kings Mountain and KM Elite, we would be drowning in details right now. We are so

grateful."

Ron Feemster is a Grammy Award-winning record producer, artist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter who graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1999. He had his time at the Berklee School of Music in Boston shortened when, in 2001, his career rocketed, being discovered by Will Smith and Dr. Dre, working with Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Bono from U2, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, and so many others.

His career remains in high demand, having recently collaborated with artists such as Bebe Rexha, Justin Bieber, and Train. He was inducted into the Cleveland County Music Hall of Fame in 2022.

Chimney Rock State Park: good news: “We’re Back!”

After exactly nine months of recovery since Hurricane Helene, Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park is officially reopening to the public on Friday, June 27.

In a Facebook post, the park joyfully shared, “We’ve got some exciting news… we’re back! Thank you for all your love and support during our closure. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this reopening possible. It’s been a long road, but we’re excited to have you back on the trails with us soon.”

While the park is opening, there are some stipulations. Reservations will be required for all guests, including Annual Passholders.

Initially, they will be open Friday through Monday, and space will be limited as they get back up and running.

KMLT presents The Secret Garden The Kings Mountain Little Theater (KMLT) and Eastern Metal Supply will present The Secret Garden on June 20 and 21, beginning at 7:30 pm, and on June 21 and 22 at 3:00 pm.

The Secret Garden is based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

The premise of The Secret Garden centers on Mary Lennox, a spoiled and lonely 10-year-old girl born and raised in the British Raj who is sent to live with her reclusive uncle in a large, gloomy estate on the Yorkshire moors after her parents die of cholera in India. The story is set in the early 20th century.

Thomas “Tom” Alvin Stevens KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Thomas “Tom” Alvin Stevens, 62, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025 after battling cancer for over six years. Born February 6, 1963 in Barbour County, WV, he was the son of the late Ronald Dave Stevens and Lucy Smith Stevens and was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Junie Cross. Mary Faile Hargett GROVER, NC – Mary Elizabeth Faile Hargett, 83, of Grover, NC, passed away on June 7, 2025 at home.

Born June 15, 1941 in York County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Minnie Burgess and George Faile and was also preceded in death by her husband, Grady Earls Hargett, her son,

to found Stevens Interiors, Inc. construction company in 1998. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain.

Tom grew up fishing in streams and carried a passion for hunting and fishing for the rest of his life.

He loved riding his Kubota tractor, bush hogging his farm in Ohio, and caring for his beloved mini-animal farm. Tom spent more than 15 years coaching youth sports and was an avid fan of West Virginia University Mountaineers athletics. He enjoyed an occasional glass of buttermilk, adding salt to any dish, and was known for the stash he kept in his “hidden” candy drawer.

Tom’s family will cherish their memories of a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather for the rest of their lives.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years: Teresa Gayle Stevens, of the home; children: Brent Stevens (Katelyn), Breanna Wade (Colton), Logan Stevens (Carly), all of Kings

Mountain, and Cameron Stevens (Mary Lowrance) of Charlotte, NC; siblings: Mike Stevens (Jody), Jackie Stevens, Ron Stevens (Carla), Phyllis Lambert (Bill), Joyce Cross, and Toni Cheuvront; grandchildren: Easton Wade, Cooper Wade, Emersyn Wade, Noah Stevens, Hudson Stevens, and Makinley Stevens.

Congressman Tim Moore introduces Bipartisan Bill to honor Troops deployed to the Southern Border On Monday, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) introduced H.R. 3780, the Border Operations Service Medal Act, to honor U.S. service members and federal personnel who have defended the southern border under President Trump’s 2025 National Emergency declaration.

The bill directs the Secretary of Defense to create and issue a Border Operations Service Medal to recognize military and National Guard personnel who served in designated border operations beginning January 1, 2025. The medal will be authorized for wear in accordance with uniform regulations and recorded in the recipient’s official service record.

“American troops at our southern border have bravely worked to stop the invasion of our country,

one that threatened both our national security and our sovereignty. A country without secure borders is a country in name only,” said Congressman Moore.

“These heroes are on the front lines defending the American people from violent cartels, human traffickers, terrorists, and mass illegal crossings — all while enduring smears from the radical left. They don’t ask for recognition, but they’ve more than earned it.”

GPD May stats The Gastonia Police Department (GPD) Street Crimes Unit shared their May stats. During the month, the Street Crimes Unit cracked down on violent offenders and worked to take deadly drugs and illegal guns off the streets.

May statistics show 41 people charged, 68 traffic stops, 121 consent searches, 17 arrest orders served, 79 drug charges: (40 felony / 39 misdemeanor), five firearms seized, $3,940 in cash seized.

GPD charges two Gastonia men with 1st degree murder Keith Joshua McClure, 22, of Gastonia, was arrested and booked for murder in the first degree in Gaston County on June 6, in connection with a homicide investigation, according to the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department. The arrest was made in connection with a homicide investigation involving the fatal shooting of Jeffery Carter at his home in Gastonia last April. A shootout between two groups led to the incident.

The suspect was previously arrested by the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department on September 10, 2024, and charged with a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and misdemeanor failure to appear.

McClure was also arrested on January 24, 2024, and charged with first-degree trespass and resisting a

Jasmionta Delshon Mackey, 21, was also arrested in association with the case and charged with first-degree murder.

Mackey was charged with felony possession of a firearm and conspiracy.

In July 2024, the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department arrested and charged Mackey with felony possession of a firearm, rob-

bery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, and violation of parole. Mackey has also been arrested and charged with other felonies, misdemeanors, infractions, and traffic citations in the past.

The Gastonia Police Department said more details about the June 6 arrest and investigation will be available this week.

First positive rabies case in Cleveland County On June 5, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the first rabid animal identified in the county this year.

The animal was found on Sunshine Circle, Boiling Springs.

Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-4845169 or 980-484-5100.

Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via con-

tamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

Prevention of rabies is based on the protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: • Vaccinate pets. By North Carolina State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag.

Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies.

• Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time

of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies, when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.

• Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.

• Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover, all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services.

Gaston County has eighth confirmed rabies case On Tuesday, June 3, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from the NCDHHS State Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh regarding a cat that had tested positive for rabies. A private citizen submitted this cat to the Griffin Animal Disease Lab in Monroe, NC, for a necropsy.

This private citizen is part of a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program that located this cat in the 100 Block of Pistol Road in Dallas, NC, on May 25. The cat underwent a spay operation on May 27 at a local clinic and did not recover from the surgery as expected. The cat was seen again by the clinic on May 30, and a different regimen of medications and procedures Xanax, 1g Cocaine, and 208g Marijuana (various).

Tractor-trailer overturns in Shelby

By Loretta Cozart On Thursday, June 5, a tractor-trailer overturned during a multi-vehicle crash in Cleveland County, according to officials, as reported by WBTV. The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. along East Marion Street and Highway 74 in Shelby.

Emergency responders reported that several commercial vehicles were involved in the collision, with one flipping onto its side. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the crash was not known.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History In honor of Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s upcoming Moonshine LORETTA and MotorCOZART sports car show downtown on June 28, we are re-running this story on Kings Mountain Speedway.

On November 5, 1954, the NASCAR-sanctioned Kings Mountain Speedway hosted its first race, located two miles south of the Margrace Mill. Track promoter Clyde Hullender marketed the banked clay track as “one of the fastest half-mile ovals in the Southeast,” as stated in the Kings Mountain Herald on November 4, 1954.

Among the competitors for the inaugural event was Billy Myers, a local from Kings Mountain.

Other notable racers included Jerry Foster, Howard Champion, and Buford Ellis, with Bob Etters and Bobby Herndon also expected to participate. A total of $1,200 in prizes was offered.

“Hullender expressed that enthusiasm for stock car racing in this area was high, and his organization would do everything possible to deliver top-notch racing programs in the fu-

ture,” the article reported.

In the following week’s coverage, the Kings Mountain Herald noted that over 1,000 people attended the event, which was sponsored by NASCAR. Racer No. 51, driven by Bob Myers of Winston-Salem, who crashed over the wall during the day; however, his brother Billy Myers, driving No. 4, finished second in the 25-lap finale and won a 10-lap race. Glen Wood of Stuart, VA, driving No. 22, won the feature race, with Speedy Thompson, driving No. 114, finishing in third. Bob Etters also drove his 1936 Chevrolet #36.

Unfortunately, Hullender’s promotion of the track was short-lived, as he sold his Speedway holdings at a public auction on January 8, 1955.

Weeks of rainy weather in November and December resulted in canceled races, negatively impacting his business.

The races continued for a couple more years under the management of R.D. (Frosty) Spearman, who worked in the parts department at Victory Chevrolet, and Horace Porter.

Gov. Stein creates NC Advisory Council on Cannabis On June 4, Governor Josh Stein released the following statement on the need to protect young people by bringing order to the unregulated cannabis market: “Today, all across North Carolina, there are unregulated intoxicating THC products available for purchase: just walk into any vape shop. There is no legal minimum age to purchase these products! That means that kids are buying them. Without any enforceable labeling requirements, adults are using them recreationally without knowing what is in them or how much THC there is. Our state’s unregulated cannabis market is the wild west and is crying for order. Let’s get this right and create a safe, legal market for adults that protects kids.”

The Governor signed an executive order dated June 3rd to establish the North Carolina Advisory Council on Cannabis. This council will study and recommend a statewide

approach to cannabis, emphasizing public health and safety. It consists of twenty-four members, including representatives from various state departments, law enforcement officials, and North Carolina farmers, and is co-chaired

by State Health Director Lawrence Greenblatt and Robeson County District Attorney Matt Scott. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, which began recreational marijuana sales last year, also has a seat on the council.

“I am charging this group with studying and recommending a comprehensive approach to regulate cannabis sales.

They will study best practices and learn from other states to develop a system that protects youth, allows adult sales, ensures public safety, promotes public health, supports North Carolina agriculture, expunges past convictions of simple THC possession, and invests the revenues in resources for addiction, mental health, and drugged

driving detection,” Governor Stein said.

In an interview with WRAL, the Governor explained, “The idea that we have a system where this product, which is a drug that can get you high, is for sale out there without any restrictions on how it’s sold to me is insane,” said Stein.

“Legislators have been grappling with whether to legalize medical marijuana for several sessions as well as how to address the growing number of vape stores that sell THC-infused products.”

Stein hopes the new council will unite Republicans and Democrats with health professionals and law enforcement to find agreement to better regulate the growing industry across the state.

“What’s clear,” said the Governor, “is that the unregulated marketplace is not working.“ In a statement, Governor Stein emphasized, “I want to thank members of the General Assembly for

our enduring gratitude,” said Congressman Hamadeh.

Congressman Hal Rogers added, “Our nation is safer today, thanks to the members of our military and National Guard who have bravely secured our borders since the beginning of the year. Ranger Katherine began her career with the National Park Service at the Denver Service Center back in October of 1989. In 1997, she made the long journey from Colorado to South Carolina, where she started working at Kings Mountain National Military Park.

While at Kings Mountain National Military Park, Ranger Katherine has held a variety of positions, including serving as the Acting Chief of Interpretation for the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution Parks Group and as the Chief of Planning and Partnerships for the Southern Campaign

Her education programs were among the best that Kings Mountain National Military Park has ever hosted.

Over the years, Ranger Katherine also worked tirelessly with a variety of park partners and volunteer organizations, all of whom have held her in the highest regard. She was also an active member of the National Park Service’s Wildland Fire program, primarily working as a dispatcher at the South Carolina Coordination Center.

The park’s social media post continued, “After 36 years with the National Park Service, of which 28 were spent at Kings Mountain National Military Park, Ranger Katherine is finally hanging up her hat. We’ll all miss her dearly, and no one will ever be able to replace her, but we’re also very excited for her and we wish her all the best.”

In addition, the Enforcement Specialist gathered information from all other persons who may have had contact with the cat in question and provided resources and education to help understand the dangers of family and community pets that are not adequately vaccinated.

Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement notified the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) about the incident. DHHS has been reaching out to those affected to provide guidance and recommendations regarding this possible exposure.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all pets’ health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.

This is the eighth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

Salt and pepper to taste Add chicken and veggies to saucepan • Spoon mixture into crustlined pan and top with second crust; seal edge by crimping with a fork or “flute” with fingers. Cut several slits in top of crust.

• Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

During final 15 to 20 minutes of baking, cover crust edge with strips of foil to prevent excessive browning.

Shrimp Scampi 8 ounces uncooked thin spaghetti 1 stick butter (1/2 cup) 1 or 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 pound uncooked shrimp, peeled, deveined

Cook the spaghetti using the package directions; drain. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, shrimp and mushrooms.

Saute for 5 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink.

Add the cooked spaghetti, Romano or Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper and stir carefully with a large spoon until combined.

Easy Key Lime Pie

5 egg yolks, beaten 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk ½ cup key lime juice 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust Gather all ingredients.

• Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

• Combine sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, and egg yolks in a large bowl; mix well.

• Pour mixture into unbaked graham cracker crust.

• Bake in the preheated oven until filling is set, about 15 minutes.

• Allow to cool completely before slicing.

Rodeo Polkville’s 25th anniversary event promises plenty of action entertainment for a good cause

By Alan Hodge For 363 days a year the NC182 and NC226 crossroads community of Polkville is peaceful, but two days each June for over 20 years that pastoral persona perishes when Polkville Baptist Church puts on its action-packed annual Rodeo Polkville.

This year’s 25th annual event is slated for Friday June 20 and Saturday 21st. Gates at the 6000-seat Mintz Arena behind the church opens at 6pm and the on-field excitement cranks up at 8pm. Ages 13 and up at gate are $20 and advance tickets are $17. Ages 12 and under are free. The show wraps up around 10pm each night.

The church hires Charlotte-based Rafter 3 Rodeo Co. to stage the event and it’s sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association. The event has numerous sponsors with two of the largest being CPS Construction Services and Piedmont Chimney & HVAC. The church congregation pitches in and provides most of the event logistical labor including concession stand food, ticket sales, and cleanup. In addition, other Polkville residents lend their hands to make it all work smoothly.

“We operate like a well-oiled machine,” said church member and rodeo coordinator Beth Ann Blanton.

The rodeo’s roots go back to 1999 when Polkville Baptist congregants pitched in to help Hurricane Floyd victims in Eastern North Carolina. To raise funds for the project, the idea for a benefit rodeo was hatched

by Garry “Guru” Davidson who was a retired rodeo clown. The first rodeo was such a hit it was decided to make it an annual tradition. In 2000 a field behind the church was designated Mintz Arena in honor of Fred Mintz who was also one of the event founders and the rodeo has been held there ever since.

This year, as in years past, Rodeo Polkville will have plenty of action to see. Events slated for 2025 include bareback bronco riding, saddle bronco riding, calf roping, cowgirl calf roping, steer wrasslin’, team roping, cowgirl barrel racing, bull ridin’, trick riding, and trick roping.

Other arena action will be a rodeo clown show by Kyler “Bam Bam” Collins, patriotic flag parade, and other Western-style wonderment.

Rodeo participants come from far and wide to show off their skills. Out-of-state locales represented will include Gainesville, Georgia; Seneca, South Carolina; Stephenville, Texas;

Rodeo-goers who feel inspired can even climb up on a variable-speed mechanical bull for a spin.

Watching folks wrasslin’ bulls, roping running calves, and riding bucking horses works up a king-size appetite and Rodeo Polkville will have plenty of eats, drinks, and treats available. The church will have a big concession stand and food trucks galore will be there.

Just a few of the choices include that Cleveland County delicacy- fried livermush sammiches, also fried baloney sammiches, hot dogs (high class hot dogs), barbecue, hamburgers, ice cream, fries, chicken strips, and most any other grub you might find at a county fair.

“Bring your appetite,” Blanton said.

In addition to the eats, other vendors will be offering Western wear, and a variety of souvenirs. The church will be selling commemorative t-shirts.

But Rodeo Polkville is not just about entertainment. Its main reason for being is a nod to its roots a quarter century ago- raising money for missions.

“Our goal has always been to give away as much of the profit as possible for missions,” said church member and rodeo volunteer Kim

Missions that Polkville Baptist sponsor are on a local, state, national, and even international level. Places the church has assisted as are as far-flung as Cherokee, N.C. to Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico. Just a few other spots include Alaska, Ukraine, and Nepal. From disaster assistance to helping elderly folks repair their homes, Polkville Baptist is on the scene.

“We try to be a blessing to our community as we provide resources not only to our congregation, but to missionaries locally and worldwide,” said Pastor Will Davis.

40 students graduate from Pinnacle Classical Academy with over $6.2M in scholarships Forty seniors graduated from Pinnacle Classical Academy on May 31 at an outdoor commencement ceremony in the school's Lyceum.

Over 77% of the seniors received an associate's degree from Cleveland Community College along with their high school diploma.

Fourteen seniors also received a certificate from Cleveland Community College, in areas as varied as biotechnology, business administration, collision repair and refinishing technology, and fire protection technology.

Commencement speaker Hadley Heath Manning, executive vice president of the Steamboat Institute and a Shelby native, warned the graduates against the pitfalls of convenience, conformity, and contempt. She encouraged the graduates to take time for "inconvenient" relationships, to think independently, and to show compassion toward others with whom they disagree.

"Twelve years ago, I stepped foot onto the campus of Pinnacle Classical Academy for the first time. I was six years old and had no idea how much of an impact this place would have on me," class valedictorian Chesnee Stewart said in her address to her classmates. "This school has helped to shape who I am and who I will become."

Class salutatorian Madelyn Hicks paid tribute to "teachers who were willing to help me understand subjects that I couldn't quite grasp." Hicks said of her classmates, "I truly believe that you will not find a closer knit group of people

anywhere."

"From our first steps through the halls of Pinnacle to the challenges and triumphs that shaped our high school journey, we’ve learned lessons that extend far beyond textbooks," added Casey Greene, Student Government Association president. "We’ve learned the value of integrity, the strength found in perseverance, and the importance of community -- lessons that will guide us no matter where life leads next."

The seniors were offered a combined $6,283,666 in multi-year merit scholarships. Over 77% of the seniors plan to enter college this fall; they will matriculate at Anderson University, Appalachian State University, Belmont University, Cleveland Community College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, and Western Carolina University. One graduate will enter the United States Army, and another will serve as a missionary; others will enter the workforce.

Among the many scholarships received were the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength Scholarship, a full tuition, room, and board scholarship awarded by Gardner-Webb University to William Brooks; the Golden LEAF Scholarship, awarded to Maggie Gomez-Huffman; and Lenoir-Rhyne University's full-tuition President Scholarship, awarded to Michael (Cody) Humphries.

"We are so proud of the 40 graduates of the class of 2025," said Dr. Shelly

The evening before graduation, Pinnacle Classical Academy hosted its annual senior scholarship night, during which $65,590 in local scholarships were awarded to the class of 2025.

"We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of area residents who have helped make college more affordable for our students," said Dr. Shope.

Cleveland County Schools’ free summer meal program for kids The Cleveland County Schools (CCS) began its Summer Meal Program for kids and teens on June 2. It will continue through August 1. Free, nutritious meals are available from June through August each year when traditional schools are out.

Along with CCS, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s NC Summer Nutrition Programs and the Summer Nutrition Programs (SUN) for Kids North Carolina present the program.

The meal kits include refrigerated items like popcorn chicken, ravioli casserole, corn dogs, cheese dippers, BBQ rib sandwiches, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, breadsticks, tacos, and various vegetables, fruits, and other items. Menus are available online at cleveland-

countynutrition.org under the menus. The multi-day pick-up boxes include food storage and reheating instructions.

Through the program, children and teens in North Carolina, ages 18 and younger, are eligible to receive free summer meals.

One meal kit per child in the home.

According to the school system’s website, you will not receive a confirmation email if you apply for the CCS program. Simply show up at one of the Cleveland County school distribution sites during the designated time to pick up your meal kits.

Art of Sound supports local and regional musicians and is a gift to the community from the Arts Council.

You will have the opportunity to hear a variety of FREE music throughout the day and into the evening. In partnership with the Earl Scruggs Center, the music will begin at 11 a.m. The stage will be outside of 111 S Washington Street on the Court Square in Shelby.

The festival will be headlined by Emmy-nominated group Gangstagrass, showcasing their unique sound combining bluegrass and hip hop. Fire departments across North Carolina come together on the first Saturday in June to educate their communities on how to be as safe as possible in the event of a home fire.

KMFD was approved for a grant by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal to receive 36 alarms for the weekend. They teamed up with Albermarle, to disperse alarms into different communities within our city.

Publix Super Markets recalling GreenWise brand baby food Publix Super Markets, Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of GreenWise Pear, Kiwi, Spinach & Pea Baby Food, produced by Bowman Andros LLC and distributed to Publix grocery stores in the company’s eight-state operating area, including North Carolina. The product is sold in 4-ounce plastic pouches and has the potential to be contaminated with elevated levels of lead.

This recall is being initiated as a result of routine sampling and is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Homes insured for $450,000 with a $1,000 deductible will see annual premiums increase from about $3,813 to $4,099, according to an analysis by Guardian.

Instead of a 42.2% average statewide increase, which included proposed hikes as high as 99% in some areas, the negotiated deal caps the first increase at 7.5% on average, effective June 1, 2025.

A second 7.5% increase will follow immediately next year on June 1, 2026, resulting in a total average increase of 15% over two years.

While this is less than the initial request of a 42.2% increase by the North Carolina Rate Bureau, the rate adjustment will impact families that are still recovering from previous storms. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey of the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI)

negotiated the lower figure in January, capping any one territory’s increase at 35%.

Beach counties from Carteret to Brunswick will still see rates increase by 16% this year and 15.9% in 2026, while Charlotte will experience back-to-back increases of about 9%.

“North Carolina homeowners will save approximately $777 million in insurance premiums over the next two years compared to what the insurance companies requested,” Causey stated in a report by AM Best, a leading credit reporting agency.

The Commissioner added that the new rates are structured to ensure carriers can continue to pay claims despite the financial pressures of recent natural disasters and rising reinsurance costs.

Reinsurance prices (what insurers pay to insure themselves) have increased due to recent billion-dollar disasters. Additionally, the cost of lumber, shingles, and labor remains higher than pre-pandemic levels, causing insurers to allocate more funds for potential claims.

The rate bureau’s original proposal, filed in January 2024, sought increases as high as 99.4% in certain areas. Causey opposed the request, arguing that the justification for such an in-

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that patients who stop taking the oral allergy medications cetirizine (Zyrtec) or levocetirizine (Xyzal) after long-term use may experience rare but severe itching. These medications are available in both prescription and over the counter (OTC) forms.

This itching, known as pruritus, has been reported among patients who used these medications daily, typically for a few months or even years. Notably, patients did not experience itching before starting the medications.

Although reported cases are rare, some were serious, with patients experiencing widespread and severe itching that required medical intervention. As a result, the FDA is revising the prescribing information for cetirizine and levocetirizine to include this new warning.

Additionally, the FDA will request that manufacturers add a pruritus warning to the Drug Facts Label of the OTC versions.

Cetirizine and levocetirizine are antihistamines that block histamine, a molecule the body releases during allergic reactions. Both medications are approved for treating seasonal allergies (seasonal allergic rhinitis) in adults and children aged 2 years and older. Medicines are also approved for treating year-round allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis) and chronic hives (chronic idiopathic urticaria) in patients aged 6 months and older.

Cetirizine was approved for oral use by prescription in December 1995 under the

trade name Zyrtec and was approved for OTC use in November 2007. Levocetirizine was approved for oral use by prescription in May 2007 under the trade name Xyzal and was approved for OTC use in January 2017.

Patients are encouraged to contact their healthcare professionals if they develop severe itching after stopping prescription or OTC cetirizine or levocetirizine. Itching typically occurs within a few days of discontinuing these medications after daily use for several months to years.

If you plan to use cetirizine or levocetirizine longterm, especially for more than a few months, discuss the benefits and risks with your healthcare professional, who can provide personalized advice.

Physicians are instructed to inform patients about the risk of pruritus when prescribing or recommending cetirizine or levocetirizine, especially for chronic use.

Doctors should also advise patients to contact them if they experience severe itching after stopping these medications.

Healthcare professionals, consumers, and patients are encouraged to report any adverse events or side effects related to these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program. Incentives to meet rural healthcare provider shortage The shortage of primary healthcare providers, including Advanced Practice Providers in North Carolina, is significant, particularly in the state’s rural and underserved areas.

There is also a severe shortage of behavioral health providers and dental professionals who serve Medicaid, uninsured and low-income patients. In response to this shortage, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is pioneering innovative approaches for placing health professionals in rural and underserved areas.

One approach has been to utilize the knowledge and expertise of the Placement Ser-

vices Team at the Office of Rural Health (ORH) for placing these health professionals.

The Placement Services Team consists of three dynamic recruiters and a program manager. The recruiters are assigned to different service regions across the state.

NC urges preparation for hurricane season With hurricane season beginning on June 1, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urges residents to prepare now, as forecasters predict another extremely active hurricane season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts nineteen named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30.

“North Carolina has seen the devastation hurricanes can cause firsthand,” Commissioner Causey said.

“Last year, Hurricane Helene tore through our state, leaving behind massive damage, and many people in

Western North Carolina are still recovering. Early preparation is critical to protect lives and property before a storm makes landfall.”

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina, bringing catastrophic flooding and destruction. The storm caused 107 deaths, destroyed thousands of homes, and caused nearly $60 billion in damage, including roads, bridges, and culverts.

With the arrival of the 2025 hurricane season, Commissioner Causey is sharing the following tips to help residents be prepared before, during, and after a storm: Before a Hurricane • Make sure you have ad-

equate insurance coverage.

Know exactly what your insurance policy covers.

Homeowners’ policies do not cover flooding. Be aware that there is a 30-day waiting period before flood policies take effect. If you rent, your landlord’s insurance only covers the building, not your belongings. You will need renters’ insurance to protect your personal items.

• Compile essential documents. Gather important paperwork, including insurance policies, medical records, and prescriptions.

Be prepared to bring copies with you if you are forced to evacuate your home. Know how to contact your insurance agent and company.

• Create a home inven-

tory. Go room to room in your home and write down the brand name, description, estimated value, and date of purchase for each item. Compiling receipts, appraisal documents, and serial numbers is also helpful. Take videos or photographs of your belongings.

Store your home inventory and related documents in a safe, easily accessible place online, on your smartphone, on your computer, or in a fire-proof box or safe deposit box.

• Identify potential hazards around your home.

Even if you have a separate windstorm or hail policy in addition to your homeowners’ policy, your primary homeowners’ insurer will investigate and adjust the claim even if you have wind or hail loss. Be patient as the insurer will likely be dealing with many claims at the same time.

• Create a list of the damage and take clear pictures before making any temporary repairs.

• Do what you can to stop further damage from happening. For instance, place a tarp on your roof to prevent water from coming into the house. Keep receipts because your reasonable expenses to protect your property are part of the loss and may be reimbursed by your insurance company.

• Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance company has inspected the damage and you have agreed on the cost of the repairs.

Check with your insurance company before you dispose of damaged materials or items.

Does Medicare Cover Vision Care and Eye Exams?

Dear Savvy Senior, What all does Medicare cover when it comes to vision care? I currently have good vision insurance through my employer but will lose it when I retire.

Dear Almost, Many soon-to-be retirees are a bit blurry with what Medicare does and doesn’t cover when it comes to vision care. The good news is that Medicare covers most medical issues like cataract surgery, treatment of eye diseases and medical emergencies. But unfortunately, routine care like eye exams and eyeglasses are usually the beneficiary’s responsibility.

Here’s a breakdown of what is and isn’t covered.

Eye exams and treatments: Medicare does not cover routine eye exams that test for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but they do cover yearly medical eye exams if you have diabetes or are at high risk for glaucoma. They will also pay for exams to test and treat medical eye diseases if you’re having vision problems that indicate a serious eye problem like macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, eye infections or if you get something in your eye.

Eye surgeries: Medicare will cover most eye surgeries that help repair the eye function, including cataract surgery to remove cataracts and insert standard intraocular lenses to replace your own.

Medicare will not, however, pick up the extra cost if you choose a premium multifocal lens that restores full range of vision, thereby reducing your need for glasses after cataract surgery. The extra cost for a premium lens can run $1,500 to $4,000 per eye.

Eye surgeries that are usually not covered by Medicare include refractive (LASIK) surgery and cosmetic eye surgery that are not considered medically necessary.

Eyeglasses and contact lenses: Medicare will not pay for eyeglasses or contact lenses, with one exception: If you have had a conventional intraocular lens inserted during cataract surgery, Medicare will pay for eyeglasses or contact lenses following the operation.

Ways to Save Although original Medicare’s vision coverage is limited to medical issues, there are ways you can save on routine care. Here are several to check into.

Medicare Advantage plans: Many of these plans, which are alternatives to original Medicare and sold through private insurance companies, cover routine eye exams and eyeglasses, but coverage is limited so be sure you understand the specifics.

While I don’t recommend enrolling in an Advantage plan just to get vision coverage it is an option you should know about. To locate Advantage plans in your area that provide vision coverage, go to Medicare.gov/plan-compare or call 800633-4227.

Purchase vision insurance: If you get routine eye exams and purchase new eyeglasses annually, a vision insurance plan may be worth the costs. These policies typically range between $5 and $30 per month. Most plans will also have copays or deductibles you’ll be responsible for.

Check veterans’ benefits: If you’re a veteran and qualify for VA health care benefits, you may be able to get some or all of your routine vision care through VA. Go to VA.gov/health-care/aboutva-health-benefits/vision-care to learn more.

Find cheaper shopping options: Many

retailers provide discounts – between 10 and 50 percent – on eye exams and eyeglasses if you belong to a membership group like AARP or AAA.

You can also save by shopping at discount retailers like Costco Optical, Sam’s Club Optical or Target Optical, which are all recommended by Consumer Reports. Or consider buying your glasses online at retailers like ZenniOptical.com, EyeBuyDirect.com or GlassesUSA.com which offer big savings.

To purchase glasses online, you’ll need a valid prescription from an eye doctor (no more than a year old), plus your pupillary distance number, which is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils in each eye.

Look for assistance: There are also health centers and local clinics that provide free or discounted vision exams and eyeglasses to those in need. To find them put a call into your local Lions Club (see Directory.LionsClubs.org) for referrals.
