Participating artists are Todd Baxter, Janet Dyer, Rob Dyer, Darlene Godfrey, Lori McAdams, Terry Ratchford and Alicia Robinson. These featured artists have been working in colored pencils for some time, amassing a high degree of skill and expertise. Many have won awards in this medium. Todd Baxter, for instance, has exhibited and won awards with the Colored Pencil Society of America and was a finalist in the 2024 Richeson 75 Figure/Portrait Competition & Exhibition. Giving Grace When Others Walk Away

Scripture: Acts 15:36-39

Today concludes our fourpart series on “Becoming a Barnabas.” I hope this has challenged you as it has me to evaluate how I interact with people and how to encourage and love others. We continue by journeying with Barnabas as he gives grace when others walk away. When we meet up with Paul and

Barnabas, they are prepared for another missionary journey. However, they disagreed sharply over whether to bring John Mark, who had abandoned them on a previous trip.

Paul said no. Barnabas said yes. The disagreement was so strong they, Paul and Barnabas, parted ways.

Barnabas chose grace. He gave Mark another chance.

Barnabas looked at Mark like Jesus looks at us. “Jesus saw people not just for who they were, but for who they could become.” — Rick Warren And years later, Paul him-

self would write, “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is helpful to me in the ministry” (2 Tim. 4:11).

Grace won. Because Barnabas believed even when others didn’t. “To believe in someone is to see them through the eyes of grace.”

(unknown)

This forgiving heart is captured in the song “The Blessing”: May His favor be upon you / And a thousand generations / Your family and your children / And their children…

Encouragement means giving others space to fail—and to rise again.

Modern Application: Who has let you down? Disappointed your expectations? Be a Barnabas. Offer a second chance. Believe that God is still writing their story.

Final Thought: To become a Barnabas is not to seek glory, but to give it away. To encourage. To believe. To build. To give grace. The Church—and the world— desperately needs more Barnabases. Will you be one?

Encouragement and blessings, Jonathan

Dear Savvy Senior, I will be enrolling in Medicare in a few months and would like to know if I initially enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, am I able to switch back to original Medicare and get a supplemental (Medigap) policy and prescription drug plan later with without paying a fine? Almost 65

Dear Almost,

You won’t be subject to any fines for switching Medicare plans, but you will be subject to medical underwriting for the supplemental (Medigap) policy. That means the private insurance companies that offer these plans can deny you coverage or charge you a lot more for preexisting conditions. This is known as the Medicare Advantage trap. Here’s what you should know.

Understanding MA Plans

Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C) are government approved health plans sold by private insurance companies that you can choose in place of origi-

nal Medicare. The vast majority of Advantage plans are managed-care policies such as HMOs or PPOs that require you to get your care within a network of doctors.

If you join an Advantage plan, the plan will provide all your Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage like original Medicare does. But many Advantage plans also offer extra health perks like dental, hearing and vision coverage along with gym/fitness memberships, and most plans include prescription drug coverage too.

Medicare Advantage plans are also cheaper than if you got original Medicare, plus a separate Part D drug plan and a Medigap policy. This can be very attractive to new enrollees who are relatively healthy and don’t require much medical care.

But the benefits and networks of Advantage plans can change from year to year. And if you get care outside the networks, you’ll usually pay more – sometimes a lot more. Advantage

plans are also criticized for pre-authorization requirements which can delay or deny patient access to medical care.

The rap on Medicare Advantage has always been that they’re great when you’re healthy and don’t require much health care, but depending on the plan, may not be so great if you get sick.

With original Medicare, benefits remain the same and you can use any provider that accepts Medicare (most doctor’s do). But original Medicare has coverage gaps (deductibles, coinsurance and copayments) that can be very expensive, which is why you’ll need a supplemental (Medigap) plan offered by a private insurer.

If you opt for original Medicare when you’re first eligible, insurers are required to issue you a Medigap policy and can’t charge you more based on your health status. In most states, Medigap plans are automatically available only in the first six months after an enrollee becomes eligible for Medicare.

But if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan when you’re first eligible, you’ll miss the Medigap enrollment window, which means an insurer can refuse to write you a Medigap policy or charge you a lot more for signing up later. And in case you’re wondering, you can’t buy a Medigap policy while you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan.

There are, however, four states — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New York — that prohibit insurers from denying a Medigap policy to eligible applicants, including people with pre-existing conditions.

For more information on how Medigap works visit Medicare.gov/healthdrug-plans/medigap.

KM United Girls shine in Season Opener at CSA Dick’s Sporting Goods Invitational

their

statement

at the CSA Dick’s Sporting Goods Invitational Tournament this past weekend, with both the U15 and U12 squads delivering standout performances against tough competition.

The U15 girls stormed into the finals with an impressive run of three consecutive shutout victories, posting scores of 5-0, 4-0, and 1-0. Their dominant start saw six different players find the back of the net: Ryann Hendricks, Ava Canoutas, Abi Noble, Kyndall Steele, Caroline Jones, and Madden Dew all contributed to the team’s offensive success.

The backbone of their defensive unit—Maggie Ford, Victoria Sanchez, and goalkeeper Olivia Russell—was instrumental in securing three clean sheets before the final match. Despite their valiant effort, the U15s fell 6-0 to a strong NC Fusion side in the championship game, ending their first tournament of the season as finalists.

“This team showed a lot of heart and technical prowess this weekend,” said Coach Stephen. “Proud of the way they played as a team, and every girl that took the field made an impact.”

Meanwhile, the U12 girls made their tournament debut this weekend and impressed with a run to the semifinals. The young squad showed grit

and determination throughout, earning a spot in Sunday’s semis before eventually bowing out. Goal scorers for the U12s included Laney Hardin, Bryleigh Baldwin, and Addie Bishop, each making their mark on the scoreboard in their first competitive outing.

Goalkeeper Mackenzie Russell and Parker Nestlerode played a huge role in helping the team secure their spot in the semifinals, making key defensive stops and showing poise under pressure in critical moments of the tournament.

“Proud of the way the girls fought until the end,” said Coach Marguerite. “For us to play in a semifinal game in our first-ever tournament—it shows the hard work these girls are putting in.”

Kings Mountain United would also like to extend a special thank-you to the Kings Mountain YMCA, Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille, and Kapp Builders for their generous support as team sponsors and partners. Their contributions play a vital role in helping these athletes grow both on and off the field.

Kings Mountain High School's first star football player

Last Friday, Kings Mountain High School defeated its non-conference rival, Shelby, setting the tone for the Mountaineers’ upcoming season. For more than 100 years, the Mountaineers and Lions have been archrivals. In its first game of the 2025 season, the Mountaineers won 3014.

On Saturday, Hayne Neisler shared the story of the KMHS Football team and a very interesting story from its early history. Here is the story he shared.

Kings Mountain High School started playing football in 1922. The first great team came in 1926. The Kings Mountain High School Principal, J.Y. Irvin, was an avid football fan; his one goal was to build a team good enough to beat the school’s hated rivalShelby.

In 1926, the team shaped up to be a good one, with local boys Arthur Hord, Bub Barrett, Skimp Stowe,

Wilbur Wright, George Moss, and Lawrence Logan anchoring the team. The whole town agreed that the 1926 season looked to be very promising.

Principal Irvin felt the team just needed one more talented player to reach the top of the conference. Principal Irvin found that player in a most unusual way. Clyde (Skeeter) Skates was born in Gaffney, S.C., and played football on their high school team. Skate's father died, and he was forced to drop out of school. Times were tough for the Skates family, and Skeeter left home and became a hobo.

One night, a freight train slowly made its way through downtown Kings Mountain. Suddenly, from an open freight car, a young man jumped and tumbled to the ground. The young man dusted himself off and began walking through the empty downtown. A policeman watched him suspiciously and later arrested him on a

charge of vagrancy. The boy protested his innocence but admitted he had no money or place to stay. As the two were walking to the jail, Principal Irvin happened to be entering the local Post Office and saw what was happening.

“The young man was certainly powerfully built, “Irvin thought, and he asked the prisoner his age. Skates replied, “16 years old.'' Principal Irvin told the police that if they would let him spend the night in jail, he would enroll the young man in high school the next morning and assume responsibility for him.

Placing Skates with a local family, Irvin told Skates to be at Kings Mountain High School the next morning and to report to football practice the following afternoon. After a few practices, Skates proved to be the type of football player Principal Irvin dreamed of.

Weighing nearly 180 lbs., Skates became the team's

star fullback. The 1926 team had a glorious season, going undefeated with a record of six wins and four ties. Down in defeat went rivals Lincolnton, Dallas, Blacksburg, Boiling Springs, Mt. Holly, and Concord.

Despite not defeating Shelby, Kings Mountain was able to play the powerful Shelby team in two tied games. In the spring of 1927, Skates soon became a star of the Kings Mountain High baseball team-- its star pitcher.

Just before the conference championship game with Shelby, Skates was declared to be ineligible. It was learned that Skates was 23 years old. Even worse, he had a lengthy police record, having been convicted of breaking into automobiles and committing armed robbery. Skates eventually moved back to Gaffney and was a star player for many years for the Limestone Mill semi-pro baseball team.

KMHS football coach Herron... right where God wants him to be

Kings Mountain High School’s head football coach and PE teacher, Strait Herron, loves his job. He has been coaching overall for 37 years and is now in his third year at KMHS.

Herron, age 57, has been married to his wife Brigitte for 33 years, and they have a daughter named Sydney, and a son named Dalton.

“I was the head coach at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, SC, from 2011 through 2018. Also, I was the Athletic Director/Head Coach at Legion Collegiate Academy from 2020 through 2022,” said coach Herron.

When asked what led him to wanting to be a coach, Herron said, “I began wanting to be a coach when I was 12 years old. I played on a Gray-Y, All-Star team and was influenced by one of my coaches, Rocky DuBard. Coach DuBard had fun coaching and working with the players. Once I reached high school, I felt like sports would always be a part of my life. One of my high school coaches received his first head coaching job and asked me to go to college near the school he was coaching and wanted

me to join his staff.”

As far as who inspired him most to coach, and ‘pay it forward,’ to today’s youth, Herron replied, “I want God to be first in everything that I do and I know that this is the profession He wanted me be in; therefore, I do not take coaching lightly. I started coaching because of my love for sports. As I became older, I began learning that relationships are what the world is all about, so I changed my focus from the game to wanting to instill great values in young people. That is my focus... I have to say that my wife loves football and that is a driving force behind my still trying to coach at a high level,” noted Herron.

Prior to coming on board with the KMHS Mountaineers, Herron said he coached ‘many places throughout his career,’

He has been at Kings Mountain HS from 2023 to the present. So, as far as the KM football varsity team goes, Coach Herron noted they ended last year’s season with a 9-3 record and were Big South Co-Champions, but lost in the second round of the playoffs. “Our JV team was 9-1. We have two committed D-1 players to watch: WR – William ‘Tex’ Vaughn (Boston College) and DE – Semaj Odems (Gardner- Webb)

as well as other players to watch on defense which are LB – Lathan Feemster; LB – Daeshawn Camp; DB – Ayven Ingram; and DT – Wylie Rainey. Players on offense to watch are Rec. – Isiah Branch; RB –Jarlon Drye; QB – KJ Bell; and receiver Devin Hopper. There are several players that will play on both sides of the ball to watch, such as RB/DB – Cam Housar and Xavier Hutchens.”

“Leadership is a tough attribute to discuss,” said Coach Herron, while adding, “It is difficult to get young people to understand what a real leader should be. At this time, Semaj Odems is doing a good job leading our team. He never misses practice and works very hard, but his attitude toward being a better team is his best attribute as a leader.” As for which team he

is most concerned about at this early stage of the season, Coach Herron replied, “We play in a very tough conference. I am concerned about playing all of them. Of course, our players understand the Crest game is a huge rivalry due to them being in our county, but I wouldn’t say I look forward to coming up against them. They are very talented.” Lastly, on a closing note about the team, Coach Herron remarked, “I believe the first thing you have to have to be a competitive team are good athletes. KMHS has good athletes. Secondly, having a great work ethic along with a great attitude will determine how far a team can go. Our players work hard and want to be better. That drive is what we need to create a good football team.”

KMHS Athletic Director, Kevin Cruise likes

Kings Mountain softball coach and Athletic Director, Kevin Cruise, said his life has always been influenced and impacted by other coaches.

“I have always been impacted by the coaches in my life. I knew around middle school that coaching was in my future. I played football at Gardner-Webb University and coached as a graduate assistant coach for two years before getting into public education,” he added.

Cruise, age 49, is originally from Augusta, Cruise. They have three

children, Hunter 19; Avery 15; and Georgia 13.

He is in his first year as Athletic Director at Kings Mountain High School. Also, he has served as the head softball coach for eight years at KMHS.

“This is my third coaching job,” he added. He noted that he was at Crest and East Gaston before Kings Mountain. Cruise elaborated, “I was at Gardener-Webb University for two years, Crest for four years, and East Gaston for four years.”

As for his inspiration to coach and ‘pay it forward sports-wise’ to today’s

youth, Coach Cruise said, “Seeing kids come together for a common goal, work hard through adversity to overcome and become one, and bring pride to their community, has been what moves me forward to accomplish my coaching goals.”

When asked about his team’s performance last year (2024), their placement at the end of the season, as well as which players and athletes/team leaders the Mountaineer fans most want to watch this year, Cruise said, “KMHS athletics are in a very good place. We have

had multiple State Championships in the past few years, both individually, and as teams. Our volleyball team won the 3A State Championship two years ago and are looking to continue their dominance in the Big South.”

He continued, “Track and Field had a State Championship with Max Thompson competing in the 800-meter run and multiple other athletes finishing high in the State meet on a yearly basis. Will Varner won the 3A State Championship last year in wrestling and is returning for his senior year this fall.

Our softball program finished as a State runner-up two years ago and we have multiple players returning in the spring to compete for their third straight Big South Championship.”

As for the Big South 5A-6A conference, Coach Cruise had this to say, “The Big South 5A-6A is one of the most competitive conferences in the State of North Carolina. If we finish in the top half of our conference, we are well prepared for the post season.”

JVs beat Shelby in opener, Burns at KM Thursday night

return by King Moore to give the Mountaineers their best field position of the game at their own 47-yard line. The Kings Mountain drive was capped off by Elijah Long’s one-yard touchdown run and a Parker pass to Cayden Smith

for a two-point conversion and an 8-2 lead. After Shelby took a 16-8 lead early in the fourth quarter, KM’s Ethan Tran took the kickoff 67 yards to the endzone to cut the margin to 16-14. After a near blocked punt forced Shelby to run for a first

KMHS soccer coach Weston Harmon... A coach that gives back to his community

For Kings Mountain High School men’s soccer coach, Weston Harmon, being able to contribute to his community – is the reward of being a coach.

Harmon, age 27, is by his own admission, “a community coach” who is in his fourth-year coaching men’s soccer at KMHS. It is, however, not his first coaching job, as he noted he “coached one season of boys’ soccer (2021) at Kings Mountain Middle School.”

When Coach Harmon was asked what inspired him to coach soccer at such a young age, his reply was as simple as it was hon-

he said, “I played soccer at Kings Mountain High School all four years that I was there, and felt that this was a great way to give back to the program that had such an impact on me.

tion is the very framework of why coaches from all over the world – no matter who they are or how famous they are – do what they do on a daily basis; day in, day out; great pay, little pay, or no pay; win or lose; stand or fall – they are coaches there to make a difference in the lives of the kids they coach. When asked how does the proverbial ‘good day’ begin for a coach, Coach Harmon said it all kicked in for him when he realized he wanted “to make an impact and felt that coaching was a great way to do that. It also allows me to continue to be involved in the sport that I played for 14 years growing up. Soccer had a huge

stilled a lot of good values, so I want to do the same for the team. I want to be a role model for the team whether that be through the example I set in my Christian faith or through other values like respect, responsibility, and teamwork.”

It is always difficult for a coach to talk about how his/her team performed during a season, and Coach Harmon is no different.

As far as the KMHS soccer teams’ placement in last year’s schedule, Harmon said, “Last year was a rough year for us. We had a lot of talent on the team, but we didn’t live up to our potential. We didn’t win a single game and are excited

year. I think the players that will be most exciting to watch this year will be our outside defenders and our attack, as a whole. And leading that attack will be the upperclassmen. That’s right…I’m looking to our upperclassmen to lead the team forward. They have lots of experience and have been around the game for a while I’m as excited to see them mentor the younger players, as well as what the team can accomplish this year.”

When asked who he was most looking forward to coming up against this season, Coach Harmon said, “I’m looking forward to going up against Crest. match.”

In closing, Coach Harmon said, “I think a winning KMHS team is a team that not only wins games but also improves day by day. It is a team that produces on the field and in the classroom. It is a team that learns and grows throughout the season and can look back and see how much they’ve progressed at the end of the season.”

Coach Harmon concluded by saying, “Most importantly, a winning KMHS team is a team that learns life lessons and values that they can carry on with them to other aspects of their life

Coach Rick Henderson … believes tennis is a ‘lifetime’ sport

the past 18 years at KMHS and has also coached the KMHS men’s tennis team for the last 13 years. At times, his

Lady Mountaineers tennis team looks foward to promising season

The Lady Mountaineers look forward to another promising season as the KMHS Women's tennis team hopes to repeat as the Big South Conference Champions this fall season. The Lady Mounties have won six out of the last "10" Conference Championships. Fortunately, all players are returning from last year. They also have an incoming freshman, Grayson Howell, who looks very promising. Howell was the #4 seed at the KM Middle School tennis team.

Having won six Big South Conference championships in the past ten years is definitely a KMHS record in either the boy's or girl's tennis program.

Eighteen-year veteran head coach, Rick Henderson said, “We have the following starters from last year's team: Katherine Frye, Seanna Simon, Kayla McSwain, Elizabeth Bolt, Cindy Tipton and Lillie Bolin.” Frye and Simon went

undefeated in both singles and doubles during the regular season as well as going undefeated during the Big South Conference Championships and capturing the doubles championship. McSwain and Tipton also went undefeated in singles during conference play. Frye, Simon, McSwain, Bolt and Tipton earned All-Conference, and Frye earned "Player of the Year" honors as well. I'm looking for these five returning five players to help guide our team to another Big South Conference Championship. Also returning players are Lillie Bolin, Shiloh Bridges, Markie Wampler and Amelia Pruitt and newcomer Howell.

his assistant tennis coach for the KMHS women’s tennis team. He began his coaching career as an assistant at North Gaston High School. In 2008, Henderson received a call from the KMHS Athletic Director, Susan Grayson, about coaching the women’s high school tennis team, and that’s how his coaching career began at KMHS.

When asked what inspired him to become a coach, Henderson reflected; “Back in

fessional tennis umpire, and I continued umpiring on and off up until 2009. I was given the privilege of umpiring some of the best players in the world. So, I have always believed in giving back to my community; therefore, for years, I gave free tennis lessons to adults (‘70s and ‘80s) and I still give free lessons, but mainly to the younger generation. I encourage our student athletes to give back to the community as well.”

“As a coach, I had high

athletes so I felt the need to elevate my coaching abilities with my teaching abilities, so I pursued getting certified as a teacher back in 2012,” said Coach Henderson.

Coach Henderson is a strong advocate for the students that he teaches, not only on the court, but also in the classroom and in the community.

In conclusion, he added, “One thing that I have always believed in is not to ever cut a student athlete from any

because tennis is a ‘lifetime’ sport. I’m all about developing and building our student athletes’ self esteem as well as their self confidence, especially the ones coming from Kings Mountain Middle School.”

KMHS 2025 WOMEN’S TENNIS SCHEDULE

Coach Henderson commented, “Unfortunately, we've been limited to our practice sessions due to the heat and rain over the last four weeks.

I do look for South Point to challenge us for the Big South Conference Championship.”

Coach, parent, teacher, and former referee… Heather Pasour gives her countdown to success

Heather Pasour, age

43, has been coaching for 23 years; the last ten years of that time coaching has been at Kings Mountain High School. Her husband, Kenneth Pasour, and she have two children, Camden (a senior volleyball player), and Easton (a 7th grade baseball player). She is a PE/Health teacher in addition to heading varsity volleyball coaching at KHMS.

Coach Pasour started coaching volleyball at Southwest Middle School in Gaston County when the middle school volleyball program was just beginning.

After South West, she took a position at W.C Friday Middle School.

During her time at W.C Friday, she also headed JV coaching at East Gaston

The next year, North Gaston High School coach, Janice James, asked Pasour to assist her in coaching at North Gaston.

A few years later, James announced that she, herself, would be relocating to South Africa and, because of that relocation, she felt Coach Pasour would be the best candidate for head coach at North Gaston. James and Pasour later

Coach Pasour became the head coach at North Gaston. As far as her success at North Gaston, Coach Pasour commented, “We actually turned out to be really successful with both high school and middle school teams because I was coaching players from the ground up.”

Fast forward a few years later, and Heather and Kenneth were welcoming a new addition to their family, their newborn daughter. Due to both the demands of having a new child at home and the demands of coaching high school, she took a year sabbatical from coaching high school to become a referee and a middle school coach.

During her time off from coaching high school, Pasour missed her previous position. Coach Pasour stated, “I missed

reached out to me to coach at that time. I coached there for one year, but I really wanted to coach and teach at the same school. Kings Mountain opened up that year, and I found my home at Kings Mountain. I simply…enjoy the game of volleyball and love teaching the game.”

Last year, the KMHS volleyball team made it to the Elite 8. They lost in the fourth round of the playoffs, losing to North Iredell High School. Coach Pasour commented on that loss stating, “We have eight seniors this year. We have a strong team this year, both in skill and chemistry. All of the players from last year are returning to the starting lineup this year except two. The key contributors returning from last year are: Camden Pasour, Denet Houey, Ruby

The key people in addition to those returning from last year are: Abigail Hedgepath, Ava Broome, Madi Broome, Kenzlie Morris, Campbell Benton, Coleman Lane, and Sarah Bouchard.”

According to Coach Pasour, the biggest competitors will be South Point High School and Forestview High School. She added, “I think these will be good games to watch. Crest is always a fun game because of the history of our rivalry.”

Coach Pasour contributed to the success of KMHS volleyball to the Middle School Feeder Program.

“We have been working with our seniors since they were in our intermediate school volleyball program. So, these kids have been running our system since they were ten years

never lost a conference game since they were in sixth grade. They were the first group to win the County conference in middle school, and they have carried that success over to high school. They are a great group of seniors and will truly be missed,” remarked Coach Pasour.

Coach Pasour credited much of the success of the volleyball team to the fact that the coaches from the middle school worked closely with the coaches from the high school. She acknowledged Mandy Hamrick, Michael Cogdell, and Lindsey Ellis as key coaches of the middle school program.

Sara is married to husband, Glenn, of 29 years. They have one daughter, Hannah, who is married and lives in Alabama. Sara says her inspiration to begin coaching cheerleading is her daughter Hannah. “Seeing her passion for the sport sparked my own desire to get involved. I first began coaching in my hometown in West Virginia, and when we moved to North Carolina, I continued my

involvement with cheerleading,” said Sara.

According to Coach McComa, last year was an outstanding and competitive season for the KMHS team. The team competed in five competitions in the game-day tumbling division, earning two fourth place finishes, two regional wins, and becoming NCHSSA game-day tumbling champions.

In addition to team accomplishments, three of

their competition members were selected to the NC All Regional Cheerleading team, and one was honored with selection to the 2025 NC All State cheer team.

“Everday, I strive to ‘pay it forward’ by helping my athletes and students build confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills that extend far beyond sports. Whether in the lab or on the cheer mat, my goal is to pre-

pare them for success in school, life, and in whatever future they choose,” added Coach McComas. Using her unique background in the corporate world, and blending it with her passion to educate and coach, Coach McComas brings a not so common advantage to her students and athletes for long-term success.

KMHS sports have always been a part of golf coach Kevin Moss’ life

Kevin Moss is an Excep-

tional Children’s teacher at Kings Mountain Middle School and is currently coaching the Kings Mountain High School men’s and women’s golf teams. He has been coaching at KMHS for 29 years.

Coach Moss noted, not only did he graduate from KMHS, but added he ‘played multiple sports’ while at the school.

Moss is coaching Lady Mountaineer golf this year. In addition to having coached all 29 years at KMHS, he added, “I have been a head coach for men’s varsity soccer, wom-

High School.” Additionally, Moss, age 52, said “I have been an assistant coach for volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s varsity and JV bas-

ketball.”

Moss and wife, Amy, have two daughters, MaryQuay Moss and Avackaire

Coach Moss noted that sports have always been a part of his life.

“I began playing in youth leagues starting around age seven and continued playing multiple sports all the way through high school. So, when my playing days were over, I wanted to coach,” he said.

“In my early years of coaching, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to assist and learn from some of the best coaches to coach high school sports; such as Diana Bridges (women’s basketball/vol-

leyball), Dan Potter (soccer), Larry Sipe (men’s basketball), and Aubrey Hollifield (men’s basketball).”

The Mountaineers’ teams are in the Big South 5A/6A Conference, along with Crest, Forestview, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point, and Ashbrook.

According to Coach Moss, the lady’s golf team finished in fourth place in the conference last season.

“We had two players make All-Conference— Kaliyah Watson and Mylin Eckard.

Both of these ladies also qualified for the 3A Western Regional Tournament. We lost Kaliyah to grad-

uation for this upcoming year. We have three returningplayers from last year’s team, Priscila Medina (senior), Mylin Eckard (junior), and Bella Laughridge (sophomore), along with Hayes Laney (freshman).

Hopefully, we can improve from our finish from

last season and finish in the top three in the conference,” said coach Moss.

Coach Moss added, “South Point will be the heavy favorite again coming off their 3A State Championship from last season. They are returning most of their top players.”
