Stanley women spearhead effort to help Ukrainian refugees

As the crow flies it’s about 5,000 miles from Stanley to the Ukraine but the concern Tracie and Joy Rankin from the former have for refugees from the war-torn latter prompted them to pitch in with their respective talents and try to help those beleaguered folks in some way.

Tracie, Senior Master Sergeant 145th AW Education and Training Superintendent NC Air National Guard, picked up on the plight of some Ukrainian refugees that had

landed in Germany and used her connections and experience in getting things moved to good advantage.

“It all came about when my friend Erin Wilber and her family moved to Germany,” she said.

“Erin retired from the Guard and her husband Mick still serves. Mick applied for a tour in Germany for 3-4 years, and they took their two children and moved to Germany.

The Wilbers and another couple from the base, Gary and Lisa Dodge (similar tour circumstances), are

also in Germany. When the war began between Russia and Ukraine both families were asked if they would be willing to have Ukrainian refugees live with them, both families said yes. The community where they live has other American military families and they have taken in about 20 total Ukrainians in their community.”

The community is not far from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

Public art set to pop in Mt. Holly

This summer the public arts scene in Mt. Holly is set to pop like a string of Black Cat firecrackers.

The big kaboom will be the unveiling sometime in late June or early July of a fantastic outdoor sculpture in Tuckaseegee Park. The piece, named “Spirit of the River” will strongly feature Native American iconography and symbolism. A plaque near the sculpture will explain the symbols.

The sculpture will be ten feet tall and eight feet wide.

It will be constructed of metal with Mt. Holly-based MacFab doing the cutting and welding.

Awaken Gallery owner Emily Andress got the nod from the city to design the piece which will be erected in the pollinator garden area at Tuckaseegee Park.

“The colors will be based on those that attract bees,” Andress said. “That includes purples, greens, yellows, and blues.”

Arts on the Greenway will loan a space where the final assembly and painting of the sculpture will be done.

Downtown Mt. Holly will also be getting two new murals this summer to join the Coca-Cola one done by Boyce McKinney a couple of years ago. Work on the murals will begin soon.

Tracie turned to Joy, who also happens to be her mother-in-law, and together they came up with the idea of having Joy hand knit beach towel sized blankets called lapghans for shipment to the Ramstein area Ukrainian refugees. They also got their church, Salvation Church in Gastonia, involved. Joy’s son, BannerNews columnist Trent Rankin, is pastor there.

“It’s hard to sit on the sidelines and feel helpless to do anything,” Tracie said.

“When I saw where two of my friends were directly involved with assisting Ukrainian families fleeing their homes, I reached out to see if our church could send something. After a few back-andforth conversations with Erin, and Joy being up for the challenge of knitting 20 blankets, we decided to press forward with the initiative, truly a team effort between Erin, Joy, and our church ladies group and the church congregation. To be able to help in anyway is what our church is all about, outreach and showing love!”

Joy, whose knitting skills

are prodigious and productive, had this to say about the project.

“I enjoyed making each one of these lapghans,” she said. “They (the refugees) have been through so much, I just wanted to be a part of giving them a little happiness.

I hope they will enjoy them and remember that we are praying for them each time they put them on their laps.”

The lapghans will soon be heading to Germany.

“I’ll be sending them by post office to Erin for distribution,” Tracie said. “I am mailing the first ten blankets on Tuesday of this week. Joy is working on making the other ten and in a few weeks, they will be mailed as well.

Salvation Church wanted to show the Ukrainian families love, support and hope like we receive from Jesus. Much like our church motto ‘Fed People-Feed People’ passing on the love we receive to others.”

Trent Rankin expressed his support of the project and thanks for what everyone has done to make it happen and why.

“We’re so blessed to be able to take part in this project, making blankets for people of the Ukraine, and to show them the love of Jesus.”

Of that sum, Andress will get $16,300 for design, fabrication, and installation, Treaz will get $23,000 including lift rental, and Duarte will get $17,400 including lift rental.

Views of the brand-new golf cart that MHPD will be using for patrol and event duty.

MHPD From Page 1 The organization visited MHPD last July when they were touring the nation visiting police departments who had lost officers during 2020- a total of 339 men and women in uniform.

Afterwards, the group, led by Jagrut Shah, accepted letters from the police departments that had lost officers. The letters were applications for the bike.

Nationwide, over 70 departments responded. MHPD deputy chief Brian Reagan and Sgt. Terry penned the Mt. Holly letter. After the letters were read and considered by a panel of five judges from various law enforcement agencies, Mt. Holly was chosen the winner.

“We were honored to have been chosen,” Reagan said. “It was a blessing to have something else to carry on Tyler’s memory.”

Since it was given to MHPD the bike has been put on display at a couple of functions, but the day when it will finally be put to use is on the horizon.

With that goal in mind, two officers- Seth Dunn and

Travis McManus- have been chosen for training in the art of being a motorcycle policeman.

“They will be attending the intense, week-long, course that the NC Highway Patrol conducts,” Reagan says. “The training is rigorous. They won’t just be riding around.”

The next course will be held in August or September. After completion, the officers will be ready to take the Harley on the road.

Dunn, currently a traffic patrol officer, is excited about taking the course and learning a new skill.

“I’ve ridden dirt bikes before, but not a street bike,” he said. “I am a quick learner. The bike will be a great asset.”

According to Reagan, the bike will be used for a variety of jobs.

“It will be equipped with handheld radar,” he said. “It will also be useful in congested traffic areas since it can maneuver better than a patrol car.”

But wait. There’s the possibility that another bike could be coming to MHPD. “Jagrut Shah has asked if we would be interested in receiving another one,” said Reagan. “He is in the final stages of getting us a nice, used bike. It will be similar

to the one we have now.”

Reagan praised the Call of Duty group.

“They have been so good to us,” he said. “They stay in touch to see how we are doing.”

But wait again. The MHPD has just received a new $20k golfcart. The money for it was donated by Freightliner.

The cart is fully equipped with blue lights and a siren.

It is electric powered and quiet as a mouse in operation. It can carry up to six folks.

“It will be great for downtown events,” Reagan said. “It will also be used on the greenways.”

The golf cart got a workout last Tuesday when it shuttled dignitaries to and from the groundbreaking for new wastewater pump station near Tuck Park.

Getting back to the subject of two wheels, and the fact that folks are getting their own motorcycles out now that warm weather has arrived, Reagan offered these words of advice for drivers of other vehicles.

“People need to be aware of motorcycles on the road and avoid distracted driving,” he said. “Look twice, save a life.”

Upcoming major investment project in Downtown Cramerton Cramerton is excited to announce a major project that will improve parking infrastructure in the Downtown.

The project will include 12 additional spaces (34 total, includes 2 handicap) along

with a new pervious brick paver surface with increased longevity and eco-friendly to the South Fork River using 21st Century stormwater technology.

Please note that this project will require the temporary closing of this parking area starting the week of May 9th. The parking portion of the project is expected to go through August, 2022. Please note that dates are subject to change based on weather conditions this summer.

Chronicle Mill project nearing completion, developer tells Belmont Rotarians Eleven years after purchasing an abandoned textile mill on Catawba Street in Belmont, John and Jennifer Church are close to realizing their dream of seeing the Chronicle Mill reborn.

John Church’s enthusiasm was evident as he spoke to members of the Belmont Rotary Club recently at the Home2 Suites by Hilton. He said the project is close to 85 percent complete. Pre-leasing of commercial and residential units is expected to begin this summer with some residents moving in this fall.

The Churches, who own Centra Properties, have invested blood, sweat, tears and lots of money to save a large portion of Belmont’s first mill, which operated for more than a century. Originally, they envisioned converting the mill to office and event space. When that proved unfeasible, they switched to a residential plan and found a development partner in Armada Hoffler of Virginia Beach.

A large portion of the historic mill remains, and a new structure is being built alongside. Together they will provide 240 apartments and 20,000 square feet of commercial and retail space.

Studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments will range from $1,000 to $1,800 per month. Some live-work units also will be available.

Gaston County Schools honors 16 teachers for achieving national certification Gaston County Schools honored 16 teachers during a reception and ceremony on April 28 at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden to celebrate their achievement of National Board Certification. The certification is considered to be the highest credential in the teaching profession.

Truliant Federal Credit Union sponsored the National Board Certified Teachers Reception. Toya Bailey, community engagement coordinator, greeted the honorees and shared remarks on behalf of Truliant Federal Credit Union. Other speakers included Dot Cherry, vice chairman of the Gaston County Board of Education, and Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker.

Todd Hagans, chief communications officer, emceed the ceremony.

National Board Certification is made possible through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which is an independent organization that establishes high expectations for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

To rank among the best in the nation, teachers earning National Board Certification must demonstrate their knowledge and skills through an extensive series of performance-based assessments.

The teachers spend time examining and reflecting on all aspects of their teaching methods and classroom management. Going through the National Board Certification process is one of the most difficult things a teacher can do.

Typically, the National Board Certified Teachers Reception is held every two years, but because of the pandemic, it was not held in 2021. Therefore, the program recognized the Gaston County Schools teachers achieving the national certification during the past three school years.

Below is a list of the teachers recognized for achieving national certification in 2019-2020, 20202021, or 2021-2022: (Teachers in BannerNews area are pictured) Savanna Abernathy teaches second grade at Bessemer City Primary School.

She has been a teacher for seven years. Abernathy obtained a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Greensboro, and her National Board Certification is for Literacy: ReadingLanguage Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

“Earning my National Board Certification means that I have a renewed dedication to my profession and the ability to give the highest level of instruction that I can for my students,” said Abernathy.

Brittany Beam teaches third grade at Bessemer City Central Elementary School.

She has been a teacher for eight years. Beam has a

bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from Western Carolina University. She is currently pursuing an administration degree at Appalachian State University. Her National Board Certification is for Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

“To be a National Board Certified Teacher is something I always aspired to be.

It was a humbling experience that pushed me to truly reflect on my teaching practice and allowed me to find the best instructional practices I could for my students,” said Beam.

Jennifer Gerow teaches English at Forestview High School. She has been a teacher for 17 years. Gerow has a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. Her National Board Certification is for EnglishLanguage Arts/Adolescence and Young Adulthood.

“I am proud to be a part of a national organization dedicated to teaching excellence.

The process made me a better teacher,” said Gerow.

Erica Hawes is a school counselor at Bessemer City High School. She has been a counselor for six years.

Hawes has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Appalachian State University. Her National Board Certification is for School Counseling/Early Childhood through Young Adulthood.

“Being a National Board certified school counselor instills in me the drive and focus to continue providing a comprehensive school counseling program. It is a major accomplishment to achieve, and I believe it validates the hard work and effort I put into my position every day as I work with students,” said Hawes.

Kody Kubbs teaches history at South Point High School. He has been a teacher for 15 years. Kubbs attended Ohio Northern University and James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. His National Board Certification is for Social Studies-History/Adolescence and Young Adulthood.

“Earning my certification was very stressful and time-consuming. It was a lot of additional work on top of teaching and coaching cross country and basketball, but the feeling of achieving it was amazing. I am so thankful for the entire process,” said Kubbs.

Kerri Luksa teaches English at Cramerton Middle School. She has been a teacher for nine years. Luksa graduated from UNC-Charlotte. Her National Board Certification is for EnglishLanguage Arts/Early Adolescence.

“Being National Board certified gives me great satisfaction, knowing that my achievement has a direct impact on my students. I’m

proud to say that the hard work I put forth during this process changed the way I reach and reflect on my practice, which in turn helps my students become more successful,” said Luksa.

Natalie Mackey teaches second grade at McAdenville Elementary School. She has been a teacher for 20 years.

Mackey received a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Charlotte and attended Belmont Abbey College for her certification in education. Her National Board Certification is for Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

“Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher has made me a more reflective teacher, which has allowed me to adjust my instructional practices to better meet the needs of students. I feel more accomplished and better able to analyze student data and provide meaningful instruction to benefit and grow students,” said Mackey.

Amanda Matz teaches second grade at North Belmont Elementary School.

She has been a teacher for five years. Matz received a bachelor’s degree in business from UNC-Charlotte and attended Belmont Abbey College for a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Her National Board Certification is for Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

“Obtaining National Board Certification was a way for me to recommit myself to the teaching profession by becoming a more reflective practitioner. It was a personal goal that I set to demonstrate my commitment to not only my students, but also to myself,” said Matz.

Angie Molla is a content teacher at Catawba Heights Elementary School. She has been a teacher for 14 years.

Molla received her bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University and her master’s degree from Appalachian State University.

She is currently enrolled in the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy to receive her master’s degree in executive leadership from GardnerWebb University. Her National Board Certification is for Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

“To me, being a National Board Certified Teacher is a highlight in my career as an educator. The process to become certified is rigorous and holds teachers to high standards, leading to better learning for students, which is what we all want,” said Molla.

Matthew Renegar teaches math at Highland School of Technology. He has been a teacher for seven years. Renegar attended Lenoir-Rhyne University. His National Board Certification is for Mathematics/Adolescence and Young Adulthood.

“Getting my National Board Certification gave me the opportunity to learn and implement various strategies in my classroom that allow students to achieve their full potential. Through analyzing my own teaching practices, the National Board process allowed me to grow into a better teacher,” said Renegar.

Kelly Royston teaches math at Stuart W. Cramer High School. She has been a teacher for 20 years. Royston received her bachelor’s degree from UNC-Greensboro and her master’s degree from UNC-Charlotte. Her National Board Certification is for Mathematics/Early Adolescence.

“Achieving National Board Certification demonstrates my commitment to an ever-evolving education system. It helps to reflect on my teaching methods, the way students learn best, and adjust my teaching style, as needed. It is ensuring that students receive the best possible teaching in my classroom,” said Royston.

Victoria Sain teaches math at Gaston Early College High School. She has been a teacher for 10 years. Sain received her bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University and her master’s degree from Clemson University. Her National Board

“Being a National Board Certified Teacher means to be able to reach and grow my students more through my practice. I am able to effectively teach and reflect on my experiences to help my students as much as possible,” said Sain.

Kathryn Watts is a school counselor at Southwest Middle School. She has been a counselor for 14 years with previous experience in school social work. Watts has a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree from Gardner-Webb University.

Her National Board Certification is for School Counseling/Early Childhood through Young Adulthood.

“National Board Certification has given me a new awareness of how to engage with my students through the use of assessments, differentiation, and evaluation. I am more observant of where students are in the learning process and more intentional in my practice to ensure growth in their learning,” said Watts.

Sara White teaches Career and Technical Education business courses at Southwest Middle School. She has been a teacher for 12 years.

White received her bachelor’s degree from Franklin University and her master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. Her National Board Certification is for Career and Technical Education/ Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood.

“Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher has helped me to grow and become a better teacher. The process didn’t stop when I received my certification; it changed my thought process and how I teach. Being in the classroom is an important part of who I am and knowing I give 100 percent to my students makes the process worth it,” said White.

White received her bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University and her master’s degree from Western Governors University. Her National Board Certification is for Generalist/Middle Childhood.

“To become a National Board Certified Teacher is validation of the years I’ve spent learning and growing as an educator. I have learned how to better serve each student who comes into my classroom and this is a recognition of that hard work. It reinforces that I have chosen the right profession and that, even when I make mistakes or feel like I have failed, I have the ability to reflect, adjust, and become an even better educator,” said White.

In addition to having 16 teachers earn the national certification during the past three years, 53 teachers renewed their certification. To maintain the National Board Certification, teachers must renew every 10 years.

Across the United States, more than 130,000 educators have achieved National Board Certification, and North Carolina continues to lead the country in the number of National Board Certified Teachers. In Gaston County, almost 400 teachers have achieved National Board Certification since the program started in 1996.

The National Board Certified Teachers Reception was recorded for broadcast on Spectrum Channel 21, which is the Education Station for Gaston County Schools. It will premiere on TV the week of May 9-15 and air at other times this summer. The video will be available on the Gaston County Schools website and YouTube channel.

At the meet the South Point Ladies Track team finished first and the men’s team finished second.

East Gaston South Point and Cramer look to make playoffs

The North Carolina high school baseball and softball playoff brackets were announced earlier in the week.

Due to a press deadline first round game matchups were not available.

However, based on the rankings listed by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) website it can be determined with a high degree of certainly who made the cut and who didn’t.

How teams are ranked is based on a Rating Percentage Index or RPI. A team’s RPI is determined using a formula that takes into account a team’s winning percentage, the winning percentage of a team’s opponents, and the winning percentage of a team’s opponents’ opponents.

Based on the current NCHSAA RPI rankings Cramer baseball and South Point softball are out.

Meanwhile it looks like Cramer softball, South Point baseball and both East Gaston baseball and softball are in.

Here’s a pre-playoff overview of each team.

East Gaston Baseball So far, the Warriors have had a fantastic 2022.

In late April East Gaston showed they were the real deal when they took the annual Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament.

The Warriors finished the regular season 19-6 overall and 10-2 in conference action. EG ended the season in second place in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A.

East Gaston finished the season winning seven of their last eight games.

The Warriors know how to get things done. They have good pitching, they can get runners on base, advance them and generate runs. Warrior baseball isn’t flashy, but it is effective.

Currently EG has seven batters hitting above .300.

Right now, Logan Agosta is batting at .435, Liam Brady is at .370, Aiden Cloninger is at .347, Daniel McClellan is batting .333, and Dylan Howell is sitting at .326 while Jaxon Cogdill and Ben Summey round out the list with .313 batting averages.

The Warriors also have a deep bullpen that they can count on to pull their weight.

Parker Agosta, Bryce Benson, Liam Brady, Riley Hawkins, Dylan Howell, Gracen Mahadeo and Elijah Sutherland have all spend time on the mound and delivered for EG. Heading into the playoffs head coach Randy Sellers has a good idea what his team can do.

“Our team strengths heading into the playoffs are pitchers who will compete and throw strikes, team situational hitting, pre-game preparation and focus.” Sellers said.

As of press time the Warriors were the 12th ranked team in the 2A West.

Chances are good they will get a first-round home game.

East Gaston Softball The Lady Warriors finished the season 12-12 overall and 9-3 in league play. EG finished the year third in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A. Right now, the NCHSAA

has the Lady Warriors ranked 26th in the 2A West.

East Gaston finished the regular season strong and went as far as the conference championship game before losing to Burns.

The Lady Warriors have been successful this year by playing solid team ball. Head coach Haley Stewart stresses the need for her players to understand their roles and deliver within their abilities.

That format seems to have worked and it looks like EG is ready to take the next step.

“We lost to Burns in the conference championship game but we’re playing really good ball both offensively and defensively,” coach Stewart said. “Things are really beginning to click.”

One of the things that has helped East Gaston down the stretch is getting strong leadership on the field.

“Senior Maddison York has really stepped up the last couple of weeks.” coach Stewart added.

Based on East Gaston’s RPI it looks like the Lady Warriors are going to snag a bracket spot. However, it also looks like EG will be on the road for the playoffs.

South Point Baseball Red Raiders baseball has been solid for years. This year is no different. This season South Point had a few rough spots in early April, but they recovered and ended the season on a high note finishing up on a five-game win streak.

The Red Raiders ended the regular season 14-7 overall and they 10-4 and Big South 3A play.

Currently South Point is ranked as the 16th team in a

3A West.

Cramer Softball This season the Storm have been on fire. Cramer finished the season 19-3 overall and 12-2 in the highly competitive Big South 3A. In late April the Storm dominated the Toyota of Gastonia Spring Break Softball Tournament and walked away with the tournament title.

Over the last few years things haven’t always been

easy for Cramer. Tough breaks and COVID made things rough. But it looks this year’s strong showing has more than made up for it. This season the Storm are guaranteed a playoff spot, and they are ready to roll.

“This is definitely the best record in team history,” head coach James Brown said.

“The previous best was 17-8 and that included a playoff loss. The last two years we didn’t make it to the playoffs.

Then COVID shut things down. Now the players are hungry and very excited.”

Currently Cramer is ranked 7th in the 3A West.

Such a high ranking will play to the Storm’s favor when the brackets are announced.

“Based on the RPI it looks like we will host a playoff game,” Coach Brown explained. “That will be the first time in team history.”

Abbey Athletics holds awards ceremony The Belmont Abbey Athletics Department celebrated its 2021-22 success on May 2 honoring over 100 student-athletes at its annual Athletics Awards Ceremony at Alumni Field.

Individual awards were given out by each team, including the Impact Player, Crusader and Spirit of the Abbey. Academic all-conference recipients were honored as were several league award winners.

In addition, Athletic Department Awards were presented. Kyle Ferguson (men’s volleyball) won the Comeback Athlete of the Year, while Connor Tucker (baseball) and Abby Craver (softball) won Michael Nalls

Awards as the top freshmen. The Larry Reidy Service Award was given to Rashad Hart for his work within the Athletic Department in game operations, while Elijah Berhkle (men’s tennis) and Ryan Grice (developmental men’s basketball) shared the Father Raphael Bridge Award winner for highest overall GPA. The Marty Thomas Awards went to Mitch Dean (wrestling) and Desi Yordanova (acrobatics and tumbling) as the top seniors, while Emanuel Hernandez (men’s basketball) and Molly Hanley (acrobatics and tumbling) won the Father Martin “Pop” Hayes Awards for embodying the Belmont Abbey College spirit.

We are special to God. As He took such care in creating each of us, it is personal.

God desires a personal relationship with us. He sent His Son Jesus, who became a man, to die for us and draw us close to Him. We should reflect the image of God in our daily lives. There are times we seem unlovely, judgmental, and unforgiving. People see little of God’s image in us. How can a lost world know Jesus if they cannot recognize God’s people? As Christians, each one of us should live out the image of God in us. There should be no doubt to nonbelievers when they encounter one of God’s people. As we go about our week, let’s reflect God.
