Caminar hacia el norte siempre es mejor: una nota biográfica de Carlos Cabrero.

Por alguna razón aún lo tengo bastante presente en mi memoria. Fue mi primera vez en Wilderness con tamaño. Esa semana estaba de “surf trip” en la isla con uno de mis mentores en el “boogie”, el profesor Reniel Rodríguez y su amigo Otto Yradi y terminamos todos en la antigua base Ramey durante las marejadas grandes en plena temporada de huracanes en septiembre del año 1989. Durante ese mes en específico estuvieron activos tres huracanes significativos en la zona caribeña: Dean, Gabriel y Hugo. Los primeros dos produjeron oleaje perfecto y grande, el tercero nos pasó por encima y fue una catástrofe. Esa mañana estaba perfecto y parecía que estaba pequeño porque había bastante espacio entre los “sets”. Sin embargo, todo cambió de repente y se marcó un “set” bien grande desde el horizonte. Jamás lo olvidaré; un ser humano pequeño y flaco, backside, bajando una olota con mucho estilo y creando líneas que personalmente nunca había presenciado antes. Que hermoso espectáculo de surf. Yo tenía apenas 16 años y ese ser humano flaquito era Carlos Cabrero.

Ya yo conocía un poco acerca de Carlos y de otros surfistas reconocidos en aquellos tiempos pues competía en la Federación de Surfing de Puerto Rico en la categoría “bodyboard open”. Talentos como Jorge Nido, Juan Ashton, Alberto Licha, Angel Alvarez, Kiko “Rabia”, Onix Vázquez, Gavilán, Pino, Baballo, Gerónimo Bosch, Rafael Llompart, Cocolo Torres y otros. Sin embargo, Carlos era bastante más joven que todo ese grupo y ripiaba mucho más. Tal vez por eso me llamaba la atención era un adolescente con talento de adulto. Esto se debía (vine a averiguar más adelante) a que él usualmente se iba a correr olas con surfistas mayores, como por ejemplo, sus hermanos Quique Manuel y Rafael Cabrero.  Adquiriendo así, un estilo de surfing y un conocimiento muy maduro en las olas para su corta edad; eso era impresionante. Desde mis ojos: era el primer niño prodigio en todo este entorno llamado surfing boricua. Estaba muy adelantado a su tiempo y edad.

Carlos nace en enero del 1975, siendo el mas pequeño de cuatro hermanos (Quique Manuel, Maricarmen y Rafael). Su madre Marisol Dávila trabajaba en el Departamento de Educación y su padre Manuel Cabrero trabajaba en Pan American Airlines. Luego de la separación de sus padres Carlos con apenas tres anos y su familia se mudan al edificio de sus abuelos, ubicado en la parada 18 en Santurce. Esta etapa en su vida fue una muy determinante e importante en su desarrollo tanto personal como deportivo. A los 7 años aprendió a nadar en la piscina de la antigua base naval en Miramar. Luego cuando pasa a las piscinas del Escambrón sobresalió en los eventos de 50 y 100 metros estilo libre. Finalmente se interesó por los trampolines y la disciplina del clavado. Es muy interesante notar que estas dos actividades deportivas vendrían a ejercer una influencia significativa en su personalidad competitiva y como deportista. La natación le ayudó a desarrollar su confianza en el agua y la altura de la practica de clavado fue beneficioso para enfrenta las olas grandes. Cabe mencionar que su interés por las olas grandes se intensificó gracias a la competencia entre sus dos hermanos que ya corrían olas de mayor tamaño lo que creo un reto a Carlos para desarrollar sus destrezas en olas de alto calibre.

For some reason I still have it quite present in my memory. It was my first time in the Wilderness with size. That week I was on a “surf trip” on the island with one of my boogie mentors, Professor Reniel Rodríguez and his friend Otto Yradi and we all ended up at the old Ramey base during the big storm surges in the middle of the hurricane season in September 1989. During that specific month three significant hurricanes were active in the Caribbean zone: Dean, Gabriel and Hugo . The first two produced perfect big swell, the third one went over us and was a catastrophe. That morning it was perfect and it seemed that it was small because there was a lot of space between the sets. However, everything suddenly changed and a very big “set” was scored from the horizon. I’ll never forget; a skinny little human being, backside, bringing down a wave with great style and creating lines that I personally had never witnessed before. What a beautiful surf show. I was barely 16 years old and that skinny human being was Carlos Cabrero.

I already knew a little about Carlos and other well-known surfers at that time, well He competed in the Puerto Rico Surfing Federation in the “bodyboard open” category. talents like Jorge Nido, Juan Ashton, Alberto Licha, Angel Alvarez, Kiko “Rabia”, Onix Vázquez, Gavilán, Pino, Baballo, Gerónimo Bosch, Rafael Llompart, Cocolo Torres and others. However, Carlos was much more younger than that whole group and much more gravel. Maybe that’s why it caught my attention I was a teenager talented as an adult This was because (I came to find out later) that he usually went to ride waves with older surfers, such as his brothers Quique Manuel and Rafael Cabrero. Thus acquiring a surfing style and a very mature knowledge of waves for his young age; that was awesome. From my eyes: he was the first child prodigy in this whole environment called surfing boricua. He was way ahead of his time and age.

Carlos was born in January 1975, being the youngest of four siblings (Quique Manuel, Maricarmen and Rafael). His mother Marisol Dávila worked at the Department of Education and his father Manuel Cabrero worked at Pan American Airlines. After the separation of his parents, Carlos, barely three years old, and his family moved to his grandparents’ building, located at stop 18 in Santurce. This stage in his life was a very decisive and important one in his personal and sporting development. At the age of 7, he learned to swim in the pool at the old naval base in Miramar. Later, when he moved to the Escambrón pools, he excelled in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle events. Eventually he became interested in springboards and the discipline of diving. It is very interesting to note that these two sports activities would come to exert a significant influence on his competitive personality and as an athlete. The swimming helped him build his confidence in the water and the height of the dive was beneficial for facing big waves. It is worth mentioning that his interest in big waves intensified thanks to the competition between his two brothers who already rode bigger waves, which created a challenge for Carlos to develop his skills in high caliber waves.

La historia familiar de los Cabrero es fuerte, de pocos recursos económicos, un divorcio contencioso y un ambiente de clase media trabajadora con poca supervisión que se caracterizó por un sentimiento de supervivencia. Su madre crió a 4 hijos trabajando en dos y tres trabajos a la vez para darles de comer. El ambiente hacia el sur de la calle Ribot en la parada 18 de Santurce (Trastalleres, Los Lirios, La Colectora, etc.) era pesado en aquellos tiempos de su juventud. Carlos estuvo expuesto al mundo de las drogas y a un ambiente hostil desde niño y aprende las mañas de la calle junto a sus hermanos. Fueron años difíciles pero a la vez formativos y de mucho aprendizaje. Trabajaba en los semáforos limpiando cristales, tocando palitos, al igual que brillando botas y empacando bolsas en el supermercado de la parada 18, en los altos del antiguo Disco Patín. Fue así como logró ahorrar suficiente dinero para adquirir su primera tabla que le costó $15 (la misma medía 7’, era usada, “single fin” y se llamaba “el tostón”). Esta etapa muy temprana en su vida es la que le enseña la importancia de tener ética en el trabajo. También es cuando Carlos siente que caminar hacia el norte (hacia la playa El Sheraton, en el Condado) para practicar el surfing le hacía bien. Su vida toma una dirección más hacia las olas que hacia las mañas callejeras y con su primera tabla, el surfing y las olas le ofrecen un camino más positivo y un escape de su realidad: un mundo lleno de posibilidades. La historia de vida de Carlos Cabrero es la de un chico de barrio que se hizo exitoso gracias a su dedicación al surfing, al “mentorship” de algunos individuos que le dieron la mano al ver en él su gran talento a tan temprana edad, a su madre que le enseñó valores productivos y a su personalidad ultra competitiva y motivada hacia trabajar duro. Es una historia de resiliencia, de enfoque, de poco a poco ir aprendiendo y valorando cada paso y oportunidad que la vida misma le fue ofreciendo en cada experiencia. De no dejarse vencer ni influenciar por nada ni por nadie.

Seres humanos y mentores como Manuel Cabrero, David Dedós, Monty Smith, Hal Burger, Kiko “Rabia”, y Luis Soto son claves en el desarrollo temprano de este atleta boricua. Sin embargo, Carlos acentúa que fueron Alberto “Pupo” Castro y Luis Valladares las personas más importantes en su carrera como surfer profesional y comerciante. Su talento era evidente y gracias a estas personas y a varios más es que logra desarrollarse y dedicarse a correr olas, posteriormente a crecer como surfista profesional, ser empresario, padre y un esposo ejemplar.

Uno de los sucesos que marcaron su desarrollo fue una competencia de surf en La Punta, en el Condado, en el ano 1986 en la cual los hermanos Reynoso organizadores del evento le dan la oportunidad para competir. Fue esta su primera competencia oficial y termino ganando la categoría Boys (15 and under). Otro suceso determinante que marcó su desarrollo fue cuando logró obtener su primera tabla nueva que se dio por intercambio. Era una tabla tamaño 5’2” a sus 11 años y la misma fue diseñada por Kiko “Rabia” leyenda del surf en Puerto Rico. Esta tabla, según él mismo relata, fue la responsable en su mejoramiento de destrezas radicales en las olas.

The Cabrero family history is strong, with few financial resources, a divorce litigation and a working-middle-class environment with little supervision that was characterized by a survival feeling. His mother raised 4 children working two and three jobs at a time to feed them. The atmosphere to the south of Ribot street at stop 18 of Santurce (Trastalleres, Los Lirios, La Colectora, etc.) was heavy in those days of his youth. Carlos was exposed to the world of drugs and a hostile environment as a child and learns the tricks of the street together with his brothers. They were difficult years but at the same time formative and a lot of learning. Work in traffic lights cleaning windows, touching sticks, as well as shining boots and packing bags in the supermarket at stop 18, on top of the old Disco Patín. That was how he managed to save enough money to buy his first board that cost him $15 (it measured 7’, was used, “single fin” and was called “the toston”). This very early stage in his life is the one that teaches him the importance of having ethics in the worked. It is also when Carlos feels that walking north (towards El Sheraton beach, in the Condado) to practice surfing did him good. His life takes a direction more towards the waves than towards street tricks and with his first board, surfing and the waves offer him a more positive path and an escape from his reality: a world full of possibilities. The life story of Carlos Cabrero is that of a neighborhood boy who became successful thanks to his dedication to surfing, the “mentorship” of some individuals who shook hands with to see in him his great talent at such a young age, his mother who taught him productive values and his ultracompetitive personality and motivated to work hard. It is a story of resilience, of focus, of little by little learning and valuing each step and opportunity that life itself offered him in each experience. Not to be defeated or influenced by anything or anyone.

Human beings and mentors like Manuel Cabrero, David Dedós, Monty Smith, Hal Burger, Kiko “Rabia”, and Luis Soto are key in the early development of this Puerto Rican athlete. However, Carlos emphasizes that Alberto “Pupo” Castro and Luis Valladares were the most important people in his career as a professional surfer and trader. His talent was evident and thanks to these people and several others, he managed to develop and dedicate himself to riding waves, later to grow as a professional surfer, to be an entrepreneur, father and an exemplary husband.

One of the events that marked his development was a surfing competition in La Punta, in the County, in 1986 in which the Reynoso brothers, organizers of the event, gave him the opportunity to compete. This was his first official competition and he ended up winning the Boys (15 and under) category. Another determining event that marked his development was when he managed to obtain his first new table that was given by exchange. It was a 5’2” size board at 11 years old and it was designed by Kiko “Rabia” legend of surfing in Puerto Rico. This board, according to his own account, was responsible for his improvement of radical skills in the waves.

En el año 1990 llegó triple campeón en las categorías Boys, Juniors y Open Men. Fue el primer y único puertorriqueño en lograr tales resultados simultáneos los cuales le dieron la oportunidad de representar a Puerto Rico en su primera mundial de la International Surfing Association (ISA) celebrada en Japón. Carlos era un “wonder kid” en las olas. El OP Pro Juniors en Huntington Beach California, en el verano del año 1993, fue otro evento muy importante, en el cual llegó en 4to lugar. Siendo este uno de los eventos más prestigiosos de la nación de los Estados Unidos. Luego Carlos viajó a México, a Puerto Escondido, por primera vez y allí perfecciona sus destrezas en olas grandes y tubeadas.

Al hablar de tablas Carlos menciona que aunque ha tratado varios “shapers” y marcas (Mayhem y Wade Tokoro entre otros), mantiene una relación larga y estrecha con Glen Minami de Hawaii. El asegura que hatenido más de 500 tablas en su vida (número no determinado) y que las medidas que mejor le trabajan van desde 5’8” hasta 6’1” aunque cuenta con tablas de hasta 8’6” de largo en su “quiver” actual. Acá en Puerto Rico sus olas predilectas siempre lo fueron y siguen siendo Chatarra, Margara, Survival, Middles, Wilderness y Tres Palmas.

Durante los años noventa Carlos se mantiene muy enfocado echando hacia adelante su tienda Tres Palmas ubicada en Ocean Park. Lo que comenzó como una tienda pequeña en 1993, poco a poco fue creciendo a fuerza de trabajo y dedicacion y hoy en dia es uno de los “surf shops” más importante en todo Puerto Rico.

En el año 2000 es cuando este atleta boricua logra su mayor logro como surfista profesional al ganar un evento en la ola más relevante en todo el planeta, Banzai Pipeline en Hawaii. El evento fue el HIC Pipeline Pro (Hawaiian Island Creation) y contó con condiciones pesadas y ultra perfectas. Haberlo ganado entre surfistas de gran nivel mundial tales como el fenecido Andy Irons (campeón mundial) es sin dudas su mayor logro y más importante representación boricua en el exterior. Lo que resalta de esa competencia es su dedicación y soledad como atleta. En esos años no era acostumbrado viajar con entrenadores, “coaches” o grupos de apoyo como lo es hoy día.Un surfista entrenaba, viajaba y aprendía mayormente solo. Y este es el caso durante estacompetencia. Carlos llega solo a Hawaii, con sus tablas, agarra un taxi, consigue cama y techo y arranca a competir desde abajo en los “trials”. Era una época muy hostil en Hawaii. Aunque esas islas se caracterizan por su vibra de “aloha”, en esos años no se sentía mucho esa vibra, sobre todo en ambientes tan competitivos como lo es Pipeline.

In 1990 he was triple champion in the Boys, Juniors and Open Men categories. He was the first and only Puerto Rican to achieve such simultaneous results which gave him the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico in his first International Surfing Association (ISA) world championship held in Japan. Carlos was a “wonder kid” in the waves. The OP Pro Juniors in Huntington Beach California, in the summer of 1993, was another very important event, in which he came in 4th place. This being one of the most prestigious events in the nation of the United States. Then Carlos traveled to Mexico, to Puerto Escondido, for the first time and there he perfected his skills in big waves and tubed waves.

When talking about tables, Carlos mentions that although he has tried several “shapers” and brands (Mayhem and Wade Tokoro among others), has a long and close relationship with Glen Minami from Hawaii. He assures that he has had more than 500 boards in his life (number not determined) and that the measurements that work best for him. They range from 5’8” to 6’1” although it has boards up to 8’6” long in its current “quiver”. Here in Puerto Rico his favorite waves have always been and continue to be Chatarra, Margara, Survival, Middles, Wilderness and Tres Palmas.

During the 1990s, Carlos remained very focused, moving forward with his Tres Palmas store located in Ocean Park. What began as a small store in 1993, little by little it grew through hard work and dedication and today it is one of the most important “surf shops” in all of Puerto Rico.

In the year 2000 is when this Puerto Rican athlete achieved his greatest achievement as a professional surfer by winning aevent in the most relevant wave on the entire planet, Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The event was the HIC Pipeline Pro (Hawaiian Island Creation) and featured heavy, ultra-perfect conditions. Having won it among world-class surfers such as the late Andy Irons (world champion) is undoubtedly his greatest achievement and most important Puerto Rican representation abroad. What stands out from that competition is his dedication and loneliness as an athlete. In those years it was not customary to travel with trainers, “coaches” or support groups as it is today. A surfer trained, traveled and learned mostly alone. And this is the case during this competition. Carlos arrives in Hawaii alone, with his boards, grabs a taxi, gets a bed and a roof, and starts competing from the bottom in the trials. It was a very hostile time in Hawaii. Although those islands are characterized by their “aloha” vibe, in those years you didn’t feel that vibe much, especially in such competitive as Pipeline is.

Entonces trabajar esta faena desde abajo y terminar en primer lugar tiene un significado especial. Además el surfing profesional no era tan popular en Puerto Rico como lo es hoy día por lo que su logro no fue tan documentado como se debía en los medios convencionales y masivos del país, salvo por un extenso reportaje de cuatro páginas que trabajó el periódico El Mundo por el reportero Hermes Ayala. Es importante recordarlo y darle el valor que se merece. En realidad: si no es por medios alternativos como lo era el periódico Tiempos, liderado por el periodista y hombre de medios, el señor Luis González, este tipo de logros hasta se olvidaba, por lo que hoy día somos agradecidos para con su gesta de cubrir los deportes y la cultura más alternativa desde siempre. Es importante además darle el reconocimiento al fotógrafo Héctor Nogales que estuvo allí con su lente zoom documentando profesionalmente en diapositivas este gran momento que hoy día podemos revivir a todo color aquí en WAXD Magazine. Son momentos muy bonitos y que valen la pena ser inmortalizados en papel y a todo color. Además la calidad de ese tipo de fotografía retro/análoga lo hace mágico.

Hoy día Carlos vive para su negocio, su familia y su hija Havanna. Conversar con Carlos es una experiencia única pues es un hombre con muchas historias para contar y que se ha vivido en carne propia lo que es creer en uno mismo y crearse un camino exitoso poco a poco. Su historia de vida a través de mis ojos es un producto de su ambiente y de todo lo que le rodea. En su léxico, no existe el fracaso sino tratar otra vez, seguir mejorando, aprendiendo, creando camino al andar.

Trabajar esta pieza editorial ha sido una meta lograda que llevaba décadas en desarrollo. Redactar una historia de vida nunca es faena fácil y agradezco mucho a Carlos Cabrero por confiar en mi pasión y gesta periodística. Aquí en WAXD magazine nos interesa presentar historias inteligentes, con sustancia, relevantes y únicas. Consideramos que es importante llevar el mensaje de vivir en balance, en salud y con motivación. En esta línea considero que la vida de Carlos es un ejemplo de dedicación, pasión y balance. So working this job from the bottom up and finishing first has a special meaning. In addition, professional surfing was not as popular in Puerto Rico as it is today, so its achievement was not as well documented as it should be in the conventional and mass media of the country, except for an extensive four-page report in the newspaper El Mundo by reporter Hermes Ayala. It is important to remember it and give it the value it deserves. Actually: if it is not through alternative media such as the newspaper Tiempos, led by the journalist and media man, Mr. Luis González, this type of achievements were even forgotten, for which today we are grateful for his deed of covering sports and the most alternative culture ever. It is also important to give recognition to the photographer Héctor Nogales who was there with his zoom lens professionally documenting this great moment that today we can relive in full color here at WAXD Magazine. They are very beautiful moments and they are worth being immortalized on paper and in full color. Also the quality of that type of retro/analogue photography makes it magical.

Today Carlos lives for his business, his family and his daughter Havanna. Talking with Carlos is an experience unique because he is a man with many stories to tell and who has experienced firsthand what it is to believe in oneself and create a successful path little by little. His life story through my eyes is a product of his environment and everything around him. In his lexicon, there is no such thing as failure, but trying again, continuing to improve, learning, creating a path as he walks.

Working on this editorial piece has been an accomplished goal that had been in development for decades. Writing a life story is never an easy task and I am very grateful to Carlos Cabrero for trusting in my passion and journalistic feat. Here at WAXD magazine we are interested in presenting intelligent, substantial, relevant and unique stories. We believe that it is important to carry the message of living in balance, in health and with motivation. In this I believe that Carlos’ life is an example of dedication, passion and balance. Se ha dicho que “la variedad es la especia de la vida”. Esto no podría ser más cierto que con estas tres atletas femeninas claramente diferentes que poseen habilidades asombrosas tanto dentro como fuera del agua. Su forma de pensar, el entrenamiento y los enfoques que adoptan para convertirse en las mejores competidoras del mundo del surf son únicos en sí mismos.

Son fieros, fuertes, apasionados, hermosos y, por lo que veo en todos ellos, es un sentido de determinación que los distingue a todos para lograr sus objetivos.

Pensé, ¿cuál es la mejor manera de que estas chicas realmente expresen sus pensamientos a todos?

Les hice las mismas dos preguntas y, aunque obviamente hubo variaciones en sus respuestas, una cosa me quedó muy clara: hay un amor profundo y de por vida, una pasión y una conexión continua con el océano que los une a todos. Es algo que todos tenemos como gente del agua. Es un efecto inquebrantable y algo hipnótico que posee este océano, estas olas, este místico mundo acuático que crea este señuelo que nos cautiva y nos sumerge en un nirvana líquido que nos mantiene aferrados durante toda nuestra vida.

The Girls….. Brilliance on Water!

It’s been said that, ‘Variety is the spice of life’. This couldn’t be more true than with these three distinctly different female athletes who possess astonishing abilities both in and out of the water. Their mindsets, training and their approaches they take to becoming top female competitors in the surfing world is unique in itself.. They are fierce, strong, passionate, beautiful and from what i see in all of them, is a sense of determination that sets them all apart to accomplish their goals.

I thought, what’s the best way to really have these girls express their thoughts to everyone?

I asked them all the same two questions and although there were obviously variations to their answers, one thing that was perfectly crystal clear to me.. there is a deep, lifelong love, passion and ongoing connection to the ocean that bonds them all together. It is something we all have as water people. It is an unwavering and somewhat hypnotic affect that this ocean, these waves, this mystical water world possesses that creates this lure that captivates us and engulfs us in a liquid nirvana that keeps a strong hold on to us all our lives.

Mia, es una yuxtaposición para mí a primera vista. Veo a esta pequeña belleza pequeña, feliz y sonriente que no parece una gran amenaza en tierra, mucho menos en el agua y luego se lleva a cabo esta transformación y entra en modo sigiloso como una competidora con una sola mentalidad y eso es para ganar.

¿Por qué el surf como deporte de elección?

He jugado muchos otros deportes a lo largo de mi vida, como el baloncesto y el fútbol. Nada se ha acercado siquiera al surf. La dificultad para perfeccionar es lo que hace que nunca quiera parar. Me trae un nuevo conjunto de desafíos cada vez que estoy en el agua (que, dependiendo del día, puedo encontrarlo realmente entretenido o realmente frustrante). Por supuesto, tiene altibajos muy altos y muy bajos, pero eso solo hace que desempeñarse de manera eficiente y ganar sea mucho más satisfactorio.

¿Cómo ha influido, cambiado e impactado el surf en tu vida?

“El surf realmente ha definido mi vida. Me he vuelto más fuerte físicamente, pero sobre todo mentalmente. El free surf lo uso como escape. No hay mejor sensación que conectarse literalmente a la perfección con una ola y golpear todas las secciones correctas en todos los momentos correctos. Mi sonrisa nunca se desvanece en el agua.

El surf competitivo, por otro lado, me ha dado carácter. He aprendido a crear mis propias oportunidades dentro y fuera del agua y a hacer lo que pueda con lo que se me presente.

Sobre todo, comprender las pérdidas y no dejar que nada ni nadie me aleje de lo que quiero. El año pasado sentí que la mentalidad competitiva realmente había completado mi forma de pensar. Me he vuelto sumamente ambicioso y estoy listo para aprovechar al máximo cualquier oportunidad que se presente y poder mostrar lo que tiene Puerto Rico.

Mia, is a juxtaposition to me at first glance. I see this petite, happy, smiling little beauty who doesn’t look like much of a threat on land, much less in the water and then this transformation takes place and she goes into stealth mode as a competitor with only one mindset and that is to win.

Why surfing as your chosen sport?

‘I’ve played an entirety of other sports thru out my life like basketball and soccer. Nothing has even come close to surfing. The difficulty to perfect is what makes me never want to stop. It brings me a new set of challenges each time i’m in the water (which, depending on the day, I can find either really entertaining or really frustrating). Of course, it has it’s really high, highs and really low, lows, but that just makes performing efficiently and winning so much more satisfying.

How has surfing influenced, changed and impacted your life?

’Surfing has really defined my life. I’ve grown stronger physically, but mostly mentally. Free surfing I use as an escape. There is no greater feeling than literally connecting perfectly with a wave and hitting all the right sections in all the right times. My smile never fades in the water.

Competitive surfing on the other hand, has given me character. I’ve learned to make my own opportunities in and outside of the water and to make what i can with whatever is presented to me. Most of all, understanding the losses and not let anything or anyone push me back from what i want. This past year I’ve felt like the competitive mentality has really rounded out my way of thinking. I’ve become extremely ambitious and i am ready to make the most of any opportunity presented and be able to show what Puerto Rico’s got.

Bella, Bella Bella, la he visto la mitad de su vida convertirse en esta feroz bola de fuego que nunca, nunca se dará por vencida en lo que quiere de su surf. Hay una expresión, ‘lo que no te mata, te hace más fuerte’, en el caso de Bella, ella es como una supermujer, su voluntad, empuje, perseverancia, fuerza y su talento obvio la llevarán al lugar donde quiere estar.

*Anabella López* ¿Por qué el surf como deporte de elección?

‘Honestamente, me pregunto eso todos los días. ¿Por qué surfear Bella?

La cosa es que hay muchas razones. Podría seguir para siempre en cuanto a por qué elegí el surf, pero, quién sabe, tal vez el surf me eligió a mí. Recuerdo cuando surfeé por primera vez en una competencia y gané. Les dije a mis padres que quería hacer esto por el resto de mi vida. Mientras crecía, practiqué muchos otros deportes, pero nunca sentí una conexión con nada más que el surf. Esa es una de las principales razones por las que elegí el surf. Todos los días, cuando me despierto, voy a mi balcón, observo las olas y me siento a mirar el océano. Podría ser plano, volado o absolutamente épico y me sentaré durante mucho tiempo y solo veré cómo el océano hace lo que hace. Esta es la conexión que creé con él. Me encanta el surf y el mar con todo lo que tengo dentro de mí.

¿Cómo ha influido, cambiado e impactado el surf en tu vida?

Diría que el surf ha tenido el mayor impacto en mi vida. El surf es mi vida. Es lo que hago todos los días. Encuentro la verdadera felicidad cuando surfeo. Con el paso de los años me he quedado con el surf y se ha convertido en una de las cosas más importantes de mi vida. Hubo muchos sacrificios, altibajos y lágrimas, pero, al final del día, sabía que valdría la pena porque es lo que más amo.

El surf me ha ayudado a crear las mejores relaciones y recuerdos con personas por las que estoy eternamente agradecido. El surf me ha dado la vida que muchas personas desearían tener.

Algo en lo que mucha gente está de acuerdo conmigo es en la conexión que uno crea con el océano. Cada vez que remo en el agua me siento como en casa. Me siento tan completa. La sensación de simplemente remar en aguas cristalinas y cálidas es una completa felicidad.

El océano es mi hogar.

Bella, Bella Bella I have watched her half her life develop into this fierce, fireball that will never, ever give up on what she wants out of her surfing. There is an expression, ‘that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’, in Bella’s instance she is like superwoman, her shear will, drive, perseverance, strength and her obvious talent will get her to the place she wants to be.

Why surfing as your chosen sport?

‘Honestly I ask myself that everyday. Why surfing Bella? The thing is there’s many reasons. I could go on forever as to why i chose surfing, but, who knows, maybe surfing chose me.

I remember when i surfed for the first time at a competition and won. I told my parents I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. As I grew up, I did many other sports, but, I never really felt a connection with anything other than surfing. That is one of the main reason i chose surfing.

Everyday when i wake up, I go to my balcony, check the waves and sit to watch the ocean. It could be flat, blown out, or absolutely epic and I will sit for the longest time and just watch the ocean do it’s thing. This is the connection I created with it. I love surfing and the ocean with everything I have within me.

How has surfing influenced, changed and impacted your life?

I would say surfing has had the biggest impact on my life. Surfing is my life. It’s what I do everyday. I find true happiness when I surf.

As the years have gone by I’ve stuck with surfing and it has become one of the most important things in my life. There were many sacrifices, up’s and downs and tears, but, at the end of the day, I knew it would be worth it because it’s what I love the most.

Surfing has helped me create the best relationships and memories with people that I’m eternally grateful for. Surfing has given me the life many people wish they could have.

Something that many people agree with me on is the connection one creates with the ocean. Whenever I paddle out into the water i feel home. I feel so complete. The feeling of just paddling out into crystal clear warm water is complete bliss.

The ocean is my home.

¿Por qué el surf como deporte de elección?

“El surf fue parte del molde que me formó desde el día que nací en una familia de surf. Elegí dedicarme al surf como atleta creyendo verdaderamente que era el deporte más desafiante y gratificante del mundo. Siempre me siento más saludable y feliz después de tomar algunas olas en mi lugar favorito.

Cuando era adolescente, estaba ansioso por viajar para ver el mundo y sus maravillosas diversidades. El surf lo hizo posible. Muchos de mis sueños se hicieron realidad compitiendo y eligiendo ser parte de la familia de la industria del surf. He trabajado duro.

Tras mudarme a San Clemente, California a los 23 años, para ampliar mis horizontes como surfista profesional, me convertí en embajadora de marca de Roxy durante 9 años y de O’Neill Women durante los últimos 7 años, lo que me llevó a muchos lugares exóticos y tropicales con grandes olas He tenido el honor de compartir muchas alineaciones y cenas con algunos de los mejores surfistas del mundo. Con Roxy tuve la oportunidad de acercarme a una de las mujeres que más admiro, la compatriota de Florida, 4x campeona mundial Lisa Anderson. Su gracia, sabiduría y su asombroso don de montar olas me han inspirado, lo atesoraré toda mi vida.

*¿Cómo ha influido, cambiado e impactado el surf en tu vida?*

El surf influyó en todas las decisiones importantes que tomé en la vida hasta que me convertí en madre. Desde entonces, el surf se ha convertido en una fuente de satisfacción y paz, entre esos raros momentos de ajetreo y bullicio de preparar comida, actividades, recoger, dejar, ser madre y compañera de mi esposo.

El surf me ha mantenido en forma y saludable después de dos embarazos e innumerables pruebas que pensé que no podría soportar. La alegría que ofrece el surf ha sido la mejor medicina para combatir los últimos años.

Amy is pure grace on water. She is Mother Earth in everything she has accomplished in her life. Knowing her for so many years, traveling together, seeing her transition so fluidly in anything she sets her mind to, she has an made so many amazing evolutions in her life. Her longboarding skills mesmerize you, while her short boarding has taken her around the world, she is the complete surfing package.

Why surfing as your chosen sport?

“Surfing was part of the mold that shaped me from the day I was born into a surfing family. I chose to pursue surfing as an athlete truly believing it to be the most challenging and rewarding sport on earth. I always feel healthier and happier after catching a few waves at my favorite spot. As a teen I was eager for travel to see the world and its marvelous diversities. Surfing made it possible. Many of my dreams were realized by competing and choosing to be part of the surf industry familia. I worked hard. Moving to San Clemente, California at 23 yrs old, to expand my horizons as a professional surfer, I became a brand ambassador for Roxy for 9 years and O’Neill Women for the past 7 years which took me to many exotic, tropical locations with great waves. I’ve been honored to share many lineups and dinner tables with some of the best surfers in the world.

With Roxy I had the opportunity to become close to one of the women I admire most, fellow Floridian, 4x World Champion Lisa Anderson. Her grace, wisdom and amazing gift of riding waves has inspired me, I will treasure that all my life.

*How has surfing influenced, changed and impacted your life?*

Surfing influenced every major life decision I ever made up until I became a mother. Since then surfing has become a source of fulfillment and peace, in between those rare moments of hustle and bustle of preparing food, activities, pickups, drop-off’s, being a mother and partner to my husband.

Surfing has kept me fit and healthy after two pregnancies and countless trials i thought i could not endure. The joy that surfing offers has been the best medicine to combat the last few years.

Me comuniqué con algunas de las compañías, productores de tablas, dueños de tiendas, representantes y el presidente de la Federación de Surf de Puerto Rico para obtener un poco más de información sobre cómo estas mujeres están dejando su impresión en el mundo del surf.

AnnaBella lleva toda la vida surfeando y todos la hemos visto crecer. Es una joven muy carismática y cariñosa que es una gran embajadora del deporte y de la costa oeste de la isla. Cuando se trata de cargar olas grandes y obtener buenos resultados en los eventos, ella es una competidora, una atleta dotada naturalmente en todos los deportes que practica. Definitivamente es parte de esa joven y nueva generación de mujeres poderosas del surf que llevará el deporte a otro nivel aquí en PR e internacionalmente en un futuro cercano.

She never gives up. She is definitely one to watch the next couple years. We love the power she shows in all kinds of conditions.

Mia is someone i have known since she was very young. I used to coach her when we had PR Surf Academy. Mia has always been a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve, she has a beautiful, caring heart with a beautiful family. She is just someone you want to be around, always with the best energy, a smile on her face, but, also has a ‘knife in her mouth’ or ‘machete mano’. When it comes to charging big waves and getting barreled and getting good results in events, she is a competitor, a naturally gifted athlete in every sport she does. She is definitely part of that young, new surf generation of powerful women that will take the sport to another level here in PR and internationally in the near future.

I know these girls will take surfing to another level.

Otto Flores, WAXD Magazine: Lugar de nacimiento y crianza: Santurce P.R. @ Hospital Pavía. Criado en la calle Taft Condado/Ocean Park.

Educación. Universidad de Sagrado Corazón/ Arte-Seguido por viajar el mundo en búsqueda de olas y las culturas que la rodean. La mejor universidad que me ha dado la vida.

Breve historia de tu trayectoria en el deporte de surfing amateur y profesional. Mis principios fueron en La Bomba y La Punta con una influencia directa del talento del área en los “late 80’s”. Existía una cepa de surfistas increíbles en el patio. Nombres como Angel Alvarez, Pablo Reinoso, Jorge Nido, Franco Ilaruchi, Rafi Llompart, Matt Watson, Alberto Licha , entre otros, eran las caras conocidas cuando me sentaba a verlos “rippiando” frente a casa (Playa Grande). De ahí la evolución a competir en La Federacion de Surfing de Puerto Rico (PRSF), instigado por Rafa Cabrero que era medio “bully” conmigo. Me dice un día: “empieza a competir para partirte”. De ahí en adelante Rafa nunca me ganó: gracias Rafa! Bajo la tutela de Dr. Guy T. Ashton logré varios Campeonatos Nacionales. Esa etapa juvenil es inolvidable, los “contest” en los weekends, viajando la isla y conociendo la comunidad surfer de PR. Buenos resultados me introdujeron a los viajes de competencia representando a Puerto Rico Internacionalmente. Con talentos como Carlos Cabrero, Roberto Cardona, Raul Carrerias, Pablo Díaz, Dennis Lazo entre otros. El nivel competitivo se mantenía sólido en aquella época. De aquí parte la carrera a un nivel más profesional dándole una oportunidad al WQS, donde no tuve mucho éxito. Entonces descubriendo el “free surfing” como el camino para ganarme la vida, haciendo lo que más disfruto. Enfocándome en olas de consecuencia tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con multiples fotógrafos cotizados capturando imágenes que estarían estampadas en páginas alrededor del globo.

Brief history of your career in the sport of amateur and professional surfing. My beginnings were in La Bomba and La Punta with a direct influence of the talent of the area in the “late 80’s”. There was a strain of amazing surfers in the yard. Names like Angel Alvarez, Pablo Reinoso, Jorge Nido, Franco Ilaruchi, Rafi Llompart, Matt Watson, Alberto Licha, among others, were familiar faces when I sat down to see them “ripping” in front of my house (Playa Grande). Hence the evolution to compete in the Puerto Rico Surfing Federation (PRSF), instigated by Rafa Cabrero who was half a “bully” with me. He tells me one day: “start competing to break yourself”. From then on Rafa never beat me: thanks Rafa! Under the tutelage of Dr. Guy T. Ashton I achieved several National Championships. That youth stage is unforgettable, I “contested” them on the weekends, traveling the island and getting to know the surfing community of PR. Good results introduced me to competition trips representing Puerto Rico Internationally. With talents like Carlos Cabrero, Roberto Cardona, Raul Carrerias, Pablo Díaz, Dennis Lazo among others. The competitive level remained solid at that time. From here the career starts at a more professional level giving the WQS a chance, where I didn’t have much success. So discovering “free surfing” as the way to earn a living, doing what I enjoy the most. Focusing on waves of consequence I had the opportunity to work with multiple top photographers capturing images that would be plastered on pages around the globe.

Logros más importantes en tu carrera y en tu vida personal.

La conexión que tengo con el océano y mis puntos de preferencia, lugares como Chatarra, Islas Canarias, Puerto Escondido, Hawaii & Tahiti fue donde encontré mi verdadera pasión por este estilo de vida y dichos lugares fueron responsables por todas los logros en mi carrera. Esto no solo por sus olas de alto calibre pero también por sus diferentes culturas que son el fundamento de la persona que soy hoy día. El logró mas importante es ser padre de familia y aprender lo que eso conlleva. Entiendo que esto es una evolución de por vida. Sin duda alguna diseñar mi carrera y mi vida como ha sido la obra maestra que ha sobre pasado mi propia imaginacion.

Actualmente: diseña un perfil de lo que es Otto Flores hoy día con todas sus vivencias, aprendizajes, experiencias, viajes, perspectivas. Hoy día la conexión que tengo con el mar se traduce al activismo impulsando el interés de proteger y preservar estos lugares mágicos que nos brindan vida.

A qué te dedicas actualmente en tus facetas profesionales y personales.

Me dedico a ser Embajador y representante de Ventas y Mercadeo para la marca Patagonia. Una marca que se dedica a salvar a nuestro planeta tierra. Redactar varios consejos, ideas y visiones que desees compartir con los lectores de WAXD. En pocas palabras me gustaría ser parte del movimiento de conservación dirigido a nuestra preciosa isla en la que vivimos. Ser una voz que pueda educar a nuestra comunidad para evitar la conducta destructiva innecesaria de nuestros recursos naturales. Ayudar a protegerla de la manera más eficaz posible. Seguir aprendiendo es el único consejo que persigo y que puedo ofrecer: seguir adelante.

Major achievements in your career and in your personal life.

The connection I have with the ocean and my hotspots, places like Chatarra, Islas Canarias, Puerto Escondido, Hawaii & Tahiti was where I found my true passion for this lifestyle and those places were responsible for all my career achievements. This is not only because of its high caliber waves but also because of its different cultures that are the foundation of the person I am today. The most important achievement is being a parent and learning what that entails. I understand that this is a lifetime evolution. Without a doubt, designing my career and my life as it has been the masterpiece that has surpassed my own imagination.

Currently: Design a profile of what Otto Flores is today with all his experiences, learning, experiences, trips, perspectives. Today the connection I have with the sea translates into activism, promoting interest in protecting and preserving these magical places that give us life.

What are you currently doing in your professional and personal facets?

I am dedicated to being an Ambassador and Sales and Marketing representative for the Patagonia brand. A brand that is dedicated to saving our planet earth. Write down various tips, ideas and insights that you want to share with WAXD readers. In a few words I would like to be part of the conservation movement aimed at our beautiful island in which we live. To be a voice that can educate our community to avoid unnecessary destructive behavior of our natural resources. Help protect it in the most effective way possible. Keep learning is the only piece of advice I pursue and can offer: keep going.

Nacido en Añasco y se cría entre Mayagüez, Añasco y Rincón.

Estudia bachillerato en el R.U.M. @ Mayagüez y en Pacific University @ Oahu, Hawaii.

Practica el deporte del surfing desde los 16 años. “mis padres no apoyaban el deporte, porque no se criaron en eso, entonces yo aprendí solo”.

Su arte: “participé en muchos murales y eventos de arte aquí en la isla y fuera también. Eventos de graffiti que abrieron muchas puertas a lo hago hoy día. Fui artista seleccionado e invitado en “Snickers Urbania” (importante en mi carrera) y desde ese momento comencé a trabajar murales aquí en PR y afuera. Adicionalmente mi educación es en arte gráfico. Entonces le di un twist a mi trabajo y lo convertí en “surfing art” y de ahí salió APsketchco: mi compañía de arte customized”.

“Estoy súper contento de ayudar a la comunidad de Rincón y áreas limítrofes. Me gusta trabajar con niños ayudando a que el arte y la cultura sigan vivas. Soy Eagle Scout. Estuve en la tropa # 790 de Mayagüez por muchos años. Aprendí en mis años envuelto en el escutismo a respetar, a tomar mis propias decisiones y a ayudar a quién lo necesita sin estar poniéndolo en redes ni que la gente se enterara: en silencio y solo por satisfacción personal. Trabajé como escucha águila en Guajataka scout camp como chief staff: ayudante de los más pequeños. Pertenezco a la odern de la flecha y he ido a New Mexico a Phillmont Scout Ranch por un mes con un crew seleccionado para hacer una caminata con scouts del mundo entero: súper cool la experiencia”.

“Estudié mi carrera de diseño gráfico en Hawaii por 5 años y viví con personas bien cerca al arte y bien puestos en la tierra, con aspiraciones de vivir del arte con muy buenas expectativas monetarias. Entonces eso me motivó a creer en mi y en mi gesta creativa. Adicionalmente me influenció mucho la cultura y las experiencias del surf de Hawaii. Hoy día estoy muy agradecido con todas las personas que me ayudaron en esa importante etapa de mi vida: mis respetos siempre”.

“Últimamente me dedico a diseñar y soy muralista. Mis trabajos son 100% customizados y mi enfoque son las gorras pintadas a mano que están en el mundo entero. Me encantaría q la juventud surfer se viera más involucrada en el arte y que apoyaran más el arte, sin egocentrismos”.

He studied high school at the R.U.M. @ Mayagüez and at Pacific University @ Oahu, Hawaii.

He has been practicing the sport of surfing since he was 16 years old. “not my parents They supported the sport, because they didn’t grow up in it, so I learned by myself”.

His art: “I participated in many murals and art events here on the island and abroad as well. Graffiti events that opened many doors to what I do today. I was a selected and invited artist at “Snickers Urbania” (important in my career) and from that moment I began to work on murals here in PR and abroad. Additionally my education is in graphic art. So I gave my work a twist and turned it into “surfing art” and that’s where APsketchco came from: my customized art company”.

“I am super happy to help the Rincón community and surrounding areas. I like working with children helping to keep art and culture alive. I’m an Eagle Scout. I was in troop #790 in Mayagüez for many years. I learned in my years involved in scouting to respect, to make my own decisions and to help those who need it without putting it in networks or letting people find out: in silence and only for personal satisfaction.

I worked as an eagle listener in Guajataka scout camp as chief staff: helper of the little ones. I belong to the order of the arrow and I have gone to New Mexico to Phillmont Scout Ranch for a month with a crew selected to hike with scouts from around the world: super cool experience”.

“I studied my graphic design career in Hawaii for 5 years and lived with people who were very close to art and well placed on the ground, with aspirations to live from art with very good monetary expectations. So that motivated me to believe in myself and my creative feat. Additionally, I was greatly influenced by the Hawaiian surf culture and experiences. Today I am very grateful to all the people who helped me in this important stage of my life: my respects always”.

“Lately I have been designing and I am a muralist. My works are 100% customized and my focus is hand-painted caps that are all over the world. I would love for young surfers to see themselves more involved in art and to support art more, without egocentrism”.

SHADES OF BLUE

Este espacio se rescató el pasado mes de febrero de 2022. Miembros de la comunidad delimitaron la zona de dominio público y la zona marítimo terrestre. El Paseo Comunitario en la Reserva Marina de Tres Palmas, tiene como objetivo desarrollar un espacio donde la ciudadanía pueda valorar y conservar nuestros recursos ecológicos en un ambiente familiar. Esta iniciativa se creó y desarrolló con diversos grupos de la comunidad, tales como: Amigos de Tres Palmas, Salva Rincón, entre otros. Para donar puede accesar a www. salvarincon.org

The Community Walk in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve aims to develop a space where citizens can value and conserve our ecological resources in a family environment. R ESERVA MARINA TRES PALMAS,

Designada en 2004, la RMTP protege una de las poblaciones más densas del coral cuerno de alce (Acropora palmata) en Puerto Rico. Un arrecife saludable de coral cuerno alce puede ayudar a proteger la costa de la erosión. Su forma ramificada funciona como hábitat importante para muchas especies costeras, incluyendo aquellas de importancia comercial. Desafortunadamente, el coral cuerno de alce en el Caribe está amenazado. Desde 1980, la extensión de este coral ha disminuido hasta un 90% en todo el Caribe. ¡Ayudemos a mantener a Tres Palmas lleno de vida!

Cerca de los límites de la RMTP, se encuentra la Isla Desecheo, la cual es parte del territorio puertorriqueño y se puede observar desde la costa de Rincón. Alrededor de esta isla, se ubica la Reserva Marina de Isla Desecheo. Una gran variedad de corales, peces, crustáceos, aves, reptiles y mamíferos marinos, entre muchos otros organismos, habitan en los predios de esta reserva.

El calamar de arrecife del Caribe suele encontrarse en grupos de hasta 80 individuos, tan solo unas pulgadas debajo de la superficie del agua. Este organismo se comunica por medio de sus cromatóforos los cuales controla para cambiarse de color.

El coral cuerno de alce requiere la ayuda de las olas para desalojar el sedimento de los pólipos, permitiendo así el proceso de fotosíntesis.

La RMTP es una reserva de “no-extracción”. Se prohíbe extraer o matar cualquier organismo que esté dentro de sus límites.

• ¿Por qué no se pesca en la reserva? Esto permite que los peces y las langostas alcancen la edad adulta y crezcan en un tamaño mayor. Así pueden producir más crías, lo cual ayuda a poblar las áreas en las que se permite la pesca.

• ¿Por qué no se pueden extraer las conchas? Cuando un abanico de mar, un coral o un animal que posee concha se muere, los minerales liberados al descomponerse son reabsorbidos por otros animales que los necesitan para construir nuevas conchas y viviendas. Además, la descomposición de las conchas contribuye a la formación de arena.

El color del coral es, en gran medida, determinado por el tipo de algas simbióticas, o zooxantelas que viven en el interior de su tejido.

Un abanico de mar es una gorgonia. Las gorgonias son animales que pertenecen al grupo de los corales blandos y se mecen con las corrientes.

A diferencia de los seres humanos, especies marinas como la langosta y algunos peces, se tornan más fértiles a medida que maduran y aumentan en tamaño.

La tortuga más común es el carey, pero el peje blanco y también utilizan la RMTP para alimentarse o para anidar. alimenta principalmente de esponjas en el arrecife, mientras peje blanco se alimenta de yerbas marinas y algas. Las tres son, relativamente, de larga vida pero desafortunadamente, peligro de extinción.

Los corales cuerno de alce liberan paquetes de gametos rosados a finales del verano, unos días después de la luna llena. En la superficie del agua, estos paquetes se rompen y liberan los óvulos y los espermatozoides. Una vez fertilizadas, las larvas pueden irse a la deriva por varias semanas antes de encontrar un fondo adecuado, donde puedan asentarse e inmediatamente empezar a secretar un esqueleto de piedra caliza. ¡Una nueva colonia ha nacido!

Las piedras eólicas, a lo largo de la orilla, sostienen pequeñas colonias de coral.

El coral de fuego se asemeja más a las aguavivas y a otras anémonas venenosas que a otros tipos de coral.

Los salmonetes utilizan sus barbas para localizar invertebrados en la arena y alimentarse.

Estas formas hermosas son tentáculos del gusano llamado Árbol de Navidad. Estos gusanos segmentados hacen cuevitas en los corales rocosos y usan sus tentáculos blandos para respirar y capturar partículas de comida que están flotando en la columna de agua. Cuando sienten movimiento, se esconden dentro de sus casas calcáreas.

Un arrecife saludable protege a la playa de la erosión y le agrega arena en el proceso. La arena se produce a medida que los corales y las conchas se desgastan. Otros animales, como el pez cotorro, también contribuyen con la producción de arena. Al tragar trozos de coral mientras se alimentan, lo que pasa por su áspero tracto digestivo se convierte en arena. Este proceso se llama bioerosión.

Los corales pueden parecer macizos, pero en realidad están compuestos por diminutos y delicados animales, llamados pólipos (consisten de bocas rodeadas por tentáculos), que construyen una estructura de piedra caliza. Dentro de cada pólipo, hay algas simbióticas que proporcionan al pólipo comida y oxígeno mediante la fotosíntesis, y, a cambio, reciben alojamiento y nutrientes. Los pólipos también pueden usar sus tentáculos urticantes para atrapar comida, que comparten con otros pólipos de la colonia.

Las mordeduras en los corales son causadas por las mandíbulas especializadas, en forma de pico, del pez loro mientras se alimenta de las algas. El pez loro, al igual que muchos otros peces, cambia de colores a medida que madura. Pero eso no es lo único que cambia en este pez. Algunos peces loro comienzan como hembras y, más tarde, se convierten en machos, lo que se conoce como hemafroditismo secuencial.
