In the Garden Diary for January

Our New 2019 Winter Opening Hours

• Plant new fruit trees and bushes now. They are best planted in a frost free period, bare root and whilst the plant is still dormant. • Think about getting your apple and pear trees, blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrants pruned if you haven’t already done so. This job really should be done in the winter when the plants are dormant. • Do not prune plums, cherries and apricots until the summer. If these trees are pruned in the winter they can become susceptible to silver leaf infections. • Raspberry canes can be planted. They need a sunny, well drained spot. • Hedging and trees should be planted now. As with the fruit trees, plant in a frost free period, bare root or pot grown and whilst the plant is still dormant • Prune Wisteria, cut back summer side shoots to 2or 3 buds • Cut back foliage on ornamental grasses before they start growing. Cut them down to within a couple of centimetres of the ground. • Cut down old stems of perennial

Monday to Saturday: 9.00am to 4.00 pm

plants being careful of any new growth • Try to avoid walking on the lawn if there is a frost, or more unlikely in Cornwall snow, on it because it can damage the grass beneath • Start planning your veggie plot for the coming year and order your seeds. Don’t forget to rotate the positions of your crops and that we now sell Suttons Seeds. • Prune back Roses whilst dormant. Cut back to just above a bud (ideally outward facing) and remove any crossing, inward growing or diseased branches. • Make sure that all your garden tools have been cleaned and are ready for the new season ahead and think about getting garden machinery serviced if you haven’t done so already. • Cut back old Helleborus leaves to make the emerging blooms more visable. • Keep bird feeders topped up. The birds need all the help they can get and don’t forget they need water too.

Fabric Painting Masking tape, textile paint in various colours, stencil brushes (one for each colour), fabric and a stencil of your choice. A piece of black card is good to put under your work, or inside if it’s a bag or cushion, to protect what’s underneath.

1. Tape your fabric down to stop it moving, then put two pieces of masking tape across the top of the stencil, two down each side and one across the bottom. 2. Use a paper plate or similar to put small blobs of paint on, then using a stencil brush, lightly dab at the stencil. Build up the colour, rather than using too much at once. Continue until you are happy with the coverage. 3. Then remove the bottom tape and the side tape. Hold the fabric down as you lift the stencil up. The top tape will hold your stencil in place. If you’re happy with the coverage, remove the stencil, or replace and continue until the design is complete. 4. Once the paint has dried, iron on the reverse with a dry iron (no steam) to set the design. Paints can be mixed to produce graduated effects.

HOPKINS JOINERYA Growing Business

O

ver the past 6 years Hopkins Joinery has traded from a historic building in Hillhead, Penryn. The building has been used as a joinery/carpentry workshop for many years and Hopkins have enjoyed carrying on this tradition. However, due to our own success, we have sadly outgrown this wonderful old building, so the next step on our joinery journey is to move to bigger premises. Over the course of late summer/early autumn 2018 we have been house or rather, factory hunting. After much searching, we have finally found a former furniture workshop in The Praze, Penryn. This building offers the space for us to expand and also better organise production, thus enabling us to respond to customer requirements substantially quicker. The new workshop will enable us to produce an even higher quality product, more quickly and efficiently.

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

We will continue to manufacture rot resistant bespoke timber products (designed to cope with our lovely Cornish weather). All of our timber doors and windows, are ‘Boron Ultra’ treated (an environmentally friendly anti-rot, anti-fungal and insecticidal treatment) and air assist spray painted with ‘Teknos’ coatings, these are available in a full range of colours to suit (with the option of dual colour). Finished items leave the factory fully painted and as they are spray-painted, there’s no evidence of any brush marks. With two coats of primer & two coats of topcoat the finish will last for 7-10 years, so no need for that yearly painting job! Our new workshop will also enable us to open a customer showroom (who doesn’t like to show off a bit?). Customers will be able to come and visit and see actual examples of the products on offer. We will also have displays from our main hardware suppliers’, so you can have a feel of

that handle before committing. So why not pop in and pay us a visit. In most cases, especially on standard items, we can give you a price there and then. For a more bespoke product we are more than happy to make a site visit. You can also witness our team of skilled joiners working on various projects. And so, as 2018 comes to an end, Hopkins and the team are excited about the opportunities this move will offer as they continue our joinery journey.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you in 2019.

DOG VACCINATIONS

WHY WE DO IT! This month I thought I would discuss the diseases that we vaccinate dogs against in this country. We, as vets, encourage vaccination as a routine procedure, and many dog owners regularly respond to reminders we send out, bringing their pets in for their “annual jab”, but are often a bit hazy as to the diseases we’re dealing with. The chief diseases we protect against are canine parvovirus, distemper (‘hardpad’), and Leptospirosis. So let’s have a look at these diseases in more detail, what they do, whether they occur in Falmouth / Cornwall, and why vaccination is a good thing. CANINE PARVOVIRUS What are its symptoms? The majority of cases are in dogs less than 6 months old, with the most severe cases in puppies younger than 12 weeks of age. There is an acute gastro-enteritis, with vomiting, severe bloody diarrhoea, and rapid dehydration. The disease will often progress very rapidly and it can cause death as early as two days after the signs are first seen. How is it treated? It’s really just supportive therapy. Replacing fluids lost through vomiting and diarrhoea is probably the single most important treatment via an intravenous drip, and in severe cases blood transfusions may be necessary. Antibiotics are usually given, and there may well be a need to treat ‘shock’, as well as drugs to stop the vomiting. Cutting out the food during treatment is often necessary, so dogs may need to be fed via the drip line. However, even with the most intensive roundthe-clock-care there is a high mortality rate. Put bluntly, a lot of affected animals die. How do they catch it? The chief problem with parvo is that the virus is extremely stable – it withstands dry conditions, a lot of disinfectants, heat, etc. Added to which, bloody diarrhoea is a great way of spreading the virus around into the environment! With dry weather, too, it means there is a distinct risk of dogs picking up the virus, as it hasn’t been washed away or diluted by rainfall as we normal-

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

ly might have it. Vaccination is key therefore: parvo is out there – we see it every year, and it is not only worrying and expensive to treat, but potentially fatal. CANINE DISTEMPER / HARDPAD This is an equally nasty viral condition, though we don’t see it in Falmouth much now. What are its symptoms?

Young, unvaccinated puppies and non-vaccinated older dogs tend to be most susceptible to the disease. They develop a nasty fever, have reddened eyes, and a watery discharge from the nose and eyes. There’s a persistent cough, vomiting and diarrhoea, and a severe loss of weight; and later on, the virus starts attacking the brain and spinal cord and the dog may start having seizures. Distemper is sometimes called “hard pad disease” because sometimes the virus can cause a strange enlargement or thickening of a dog’s pads. However, whatever the symptoms, and despite whatever supportive treatment you can give – such as i/v fluids, antibiotics, anti-shock therapy etc – death follows more often than not. How do they catch it? The virus spreads through aerosol droplets and contact with infected bodily fluids, like discharges from the nose and eyes, faeces, and urine – pretty much everything therefore – and that’s the basic problem. However, there are one or two good points. It’s generally a disease of urban dogs – dog populations that have got out of control in cities spreading it to the local pets who walk the same streets / exercise in the same parks. So in Falmouth we’re fortunate in it not being a problem, but of course dogs go into kennels, where they meet dogs from other areas, and they go up country to urban environments, and dogs from up country come down here… Vaccination is crucial, and excellent immunity is gained from a basic course and revaccination. LEPTOSPIROSIS – this is Weil’s disease in people

to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216

What are its symptoms? It’s caused by a bacteria shaped like a corkscrew, which literally screws its way into your pet’s membranes – eyelids, lips, gums etc, or via an open wound or bite – and then spreads rapidly through the blood stream, usually causing high fevers, depression and joint pain. The picture shows a microscopic view of these bacteria. Scarily, Leptospira produce powerful poisons that attack the liver and kidneys, leading to organ failure. When the liver’s been damaged, the dog’s skin may take on a yellowish, jaundiced tinge, and show all the symptoms of hepatitis. When it’s the kidneys there’s weight loss, vomiting and a hefty thirst. Can I catch It? Unlike distemper and parvo, which we can’t catch, you can also become ill, experiencing many of the symptoms outlined above, called Weil’s disease. The most common ways people contract it is from exposure to infected dog or rat urine, as rats (and other animals) keep the bacteria in their kidneys and pee it out. Obviously, dogs like to investigate where rats have been, and in areas of stagnant water such as ditches it can be a major contaminant. Although your dog may require intense care (just like for parvo) to get them through the disease, a few pets make a full recovery. On the other hand, others go on to suffer chronic kidney or liver failure (just like you if you catch it), neither of which is curable. Vaccination again is key to the safety of your pet. However, the problem with vaccination is that the immunity it gives your dog is not that great: it lasts around a year only (and sometimes less) and there are lots of strains of this type of bacteria out there that your dog needs to be vaccinated against. Annual vaccination against Lepto is a MUST therefore! There are rats, your dogs will find them, and, more to the point, they WILL get contaminated by their urine: sadly, we see cases of Lepto every year. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

Release Date: 18th January, 2019 Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. STAN’S GAMES

Newton's News Happy New Year!

A new year brings new opportunities to make a positive difference in our community. As regular readers will know I am determined to eradicate homelessness and have worked hard to ensure that resources are available to enable this to happen. Since my early twenties, when I lived and worked in New York, and was so shocked to see people sleeping rough in one of the wealthiest cities in the world, I have been actively involved in tackling this issue. During my time in America, I volunteered in a shelter for homeless men. My voluntary work continued in London and Truro, with the Truro Homeless Action Group. I believe that everyone should have a decent, warm and affordable home. Since being elected in 2010, I have been working with Government Ministers, Cornwall Council and local organisations that work with rough sleepers and homeless people to enable us to tackle this issue. It all started with making sure that, as far as possible, we have the correct information about the number of rough sleepers. The Government has made improvements to enable people undertaking the rough sleepers count to build up a clearer picture of the scale of the problem. I joined those undertaking the count here and we were able to find many more people than the previous system enabled. This information led to Cornwall Council realising the scale of the problem and more funding from the Government. While more money is important, it's just as important to spend it wisely. Resolving the complex challenges people face requires team work from our public services and support from our community. So I am pleased that new legislation and guidance, that I helped shape, is also enabling this to happen. Sharing what works from around the country is also important. I am now seeing much improved collaboration and coordination of local services and that is beginning to make a significant and sustained positive difference. Cornwall Council has a Rough Sleeping Reduction Strategy and with the Government’s Rough Sleepers Initiative funding, Cornwall Council, Cornwall Housing Ltd and partners like St Petroc’s, Addaction and Coastline Housing are making continued efforts to reduce the incidence of rough sleeping in Cornwall.

28 FALMOUTH Wave

Cornwall reported a 31% reduction in its estimate of the incidence of rough sleeping over the year to November 2017. This year’s count has recently taken place and validation of the numbers of rough sleepers is awaited. I very much hope we continue to see a reduction. While we are making progress, I know that there is more to do. If you see someone rough sleeping call 01872 264153 as help is available. Over the Winter there will be a number of services operating across Cornwall to support rough sleepers. St Petroc’s Temporary Night Shelter will operate until 18 February providing 17 spaces. A ‘pop up’ temporary night shelter at the Breadline Centre, Penzance opened on the 5 November 2018 and will provide 8-10 spaces until 18 February too. Coastline Housing has provided an additional 6 crisis bed spaces which opened on 16 October 2018. This means there are now 18 night spaces which will remain available until the opening of new Crisis Accommodation at Heartlands in April. Furthermore, Coastline are providing two additional Assistive Street Outreach workers to ensure rough sleepers can be identified and assessed as quickly as possible. In addition, the Council is introducing further schemes to assist rough sleepers. The Private Landlord Incentive scheme encourages landlords to rent to former rough sleepers by mitigating the perceived risk of taking them as tenants through increased deposits, an additional 10% of LHA payment, limited void cover and a point of contact if problems arise. The Short Term Accommodation Resettlement (STAR) scheme is providing additional accommodation with support for rough sleepers before they move on to settled housing. All of this work is supported by a small army of volunteers who support St Petroc’s, Addaction, Coastline Housing, Truro Homeless Action Group and many churches and local organisations who provide practical and emotional support for members of our community. Thank you to everyone who makes a contribution to help the most vulnerable people in our community. Together, I am sure we can end rough sleeping and homelessness.

Three-cheese meatball lasagne My comfort food classic will warm you up on a winter’s night.

Method 1. Squeeze the meat from the sausages and roll into meatballs – you’ll get about four balls from each sausage. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wide, deep frying pan or casserole dish. Cook the meatballs in batches, making sure you don’t overcrowd the pan, until they’re all golden brown. Put them aside on a plate when they’re ready.

Take lasagne to the next level by swapping the meat sauce for sausage meatballs. The fennel seeds and chilli add another layer of flavour and a little spice

2. Heat the rest of the oil in the pan and add the onion. Cook for 8-10 mins until soft, then stir in the garlic, fennel, oregano and chilli, if using. Stir around for a min or 2, then add the sugar, passata and tomatoes. Swish a little water around the containers to wash out all the tomatoes and add to the pan. Season well and simmer, uncovered, for 30-40 mins over a gentle heat until the sauce thickens and the chopped tomatoes break down.

Beryl's BITES Ingredients

3. Heat the butter in a saucepan, add the bay leaves and let them sizzle in the butter for 1 min, then add the flour. Whisk to make a smooth paste, then add the milk, a little at a time, stirring continuously until it’s all incor12 sausages porated and you have a thick white sauce. Add the nutmeg and some seasoning. Leave over a low heat for 5 mins to allow the bay to infuse, whisking every now 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions , chopped and then. 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp fennel seeds 4. Keep about 10 meatballs aside and add the rest to the tomato 2 tsp dried oregano or a small handful of sauce. Spoon half the tomato sauce and meatballs into a baking dish (mine was 25cm x 35cm). Top with half the spinach, the basil fresh oregano leaves, chopped and a little parmesan. Pour over about a third of the white sauce, 1/2 tsp chilli flakes (optional) 1 tbsp sugar and top with a layer of lasagne sheets, breaking them up to fit 500ml passata the dish if you need to. 400g can chopped tomatoes 5. Repeat the layers once more; meatballs and sauce, spinach, 100g butter 2 bay leaves basil, parmesan, white sauce, pasta. Pour the remaining white 100g plain flour sauce over the lasagne, spreading it to the corners to cover 1l milk the pasta. Dot with the meatballs you set aside earlier and the 1/4 fresh nutmeg, finely grated mozzarella, then scatter over a generous helping of parmesan and cheddar. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Or if not eating 100g baby spinach straight away, chill for up to 24 hrs or freeze for two months (defrost handful basil, leaves torn 50g parmesan, grated in the fridge overnight before cooking). 250g dried lasagne sheets (about 12 sheets) 6. Bake the lasagne for 40-50 mins until bubbling and golden with lots of 50g cheddar, grated crusty cheesy bits around the edges. Leave to sit for 5-10 mins before serving. 150g ball mozzarella, torn into small pieces

Jayne and Dave Martin have recently taken the helm at the pub and overseen a dramatic transformation that, after seven weeks, has returned it to a traditional splendour. The new opening on the 8th December was warmly welcomed by the locals, who had initially feared that the pub would close. It has maintained its community feel which is further enhanced by the presence of the colourful locals, who have all welcomed the hard work and investment that has gone into securing the long-term future of the pub.
